Your experience with this game will greatly depend upon your background with early RPGs. If you have only played modern RPGs, you might find it jarring, obscure and extremely hard. Luckily for me, I played many of the good old RPGs from the 80s and early 90s, and found Realms of Arkania 1 - Blade of Destiny a very fun experience.
The game has many rough spots, bad controls and half the stuff in it doesn't work; in this sense it is much less polished than other similar classics such as Gold Box or M&M 3-5. But still it has some spark that modern games lack. I've already mentioned this in other old RPG reviews; the game is not designed to be won by you, it's up to you to find where stuff is, how it works, and how to engineer your party and tactics to turn around battles, which at first seem very hard, but really aren't.
