[*]I'm not a Star Wars super fan. I've watched only the 9 available movies, and that's it. Despite that, I do like the franchise.
TL;DR: If you have even a marginal interest in Star Wars, I recommend playing it. It you just like RPGs and older Bioware games, I also recommend playing it.
Strong Points
Star Wars: Knights of the World Republic it's an excellent Star Wars story. It evokes similar themes that of the original movies, it's believable despite being a game (for the most part), and it has excellent, excellent pacing. I rarely felt bored during gameplay, or wanting to quickly advance to get to the next section.
The game didn't overextend it's gameplay loop and always kept me on the edge of my seat regarding the story.
The game also has a light side/dark side system, which is, again, thematic, and makes the busywork quests more interesting overall. These side quest aren't very numerous nor overly long, and also don't require you to go out of your way. This also helps with the pacing, avoiding to sidetrack the player too much.
I found some skills/powers fun to use, albeit some players will find those too simple and just not entertaining.
Mediocre Points
The gameplay isn't extremely engaging, even more so because the game is RTwP (real time with pause). You will basically click on your target, click again to use an ability or power, and that's it. Party-based RPGs usually derive some complexity from controlling your whole party, but here the mechanics are simple (and limited), so there isn't much to be gained. I did find the gameplay enjoyable, but players that want a bit more bite might struggle.
Some dialogue options (specially the dark side ones) are a bit corny/overly dramatic and evil. Sometimes there is a lot of nuance about the "bad" choices, but most of the time there isn't. This might push of people who like to play gray/evil characters.
While I did praise how close to the Star Wars universe the games are thematically, specially at the end it becomes a bit too dramatic. There is a lot of talk about falling to the dark side and redemption, but everything happens a bit too quickly.
Bad Points
The only bad things I have to say about the game is the stability. Even with the community patch, disabling movies, windowed mode and other fixes I had a lot of issues with crashes. At certain point I even thought I wasn't going to complete the game, since the game crashed immediately after a fight (I was able to "fix" this by moving the camera a certain way).
Granted, I was playing on Linux, but since the game worked fine for the most part and only crashed in specific instances, I fear that this wasn't a problem caused by the OS.
It is a fantastic game that I remember well from my childhood. I had a great time reconnecting with the story and enjoyed the combat. Definitely recommend to anyone that is a fan of old school Bioware.
no matter how much time passes this will always be #1 goat of star wars games and rpgs. fun fact this game ran off of the 3rd edition rules of dnd rules
The best Star Wars game ever made. It's not perfect, but it's close.
For those of you who like me do not want to be required to see underwear only player character and companions during the interrogation scene, download the leviathan interrogation clothes mod by WildKarrde. Read the description of that mod before installing. If you are using this along with Darth Parametric's "All Hands on Deck" install Parametric's mod first, and then for the interrogation scene mod use the optional install for darth parametric's mod.
plenty of character development and an amazing story. a little slow to begin with but once you become a Jedi its non stop fun. cant wait for the remake. even though this is a very old game it holds up well
It is surprisingly good when it comes to gamplay for being such an old game, and the story is incredible. makes you wonder whats happend to games
Ok to start for years ever since i first really got into Star Wars gaming I have been hearing play KOTOR, KOTOR is really good ect and I was hesitant because of the age of the game and i already knew some of the story (some asshole spoiled it) but still wanted to try it. I bought the game for like 2 bucks along with KOTOR2 at the may the 4 sale, downloaded it, and then i realized its not wide screen, this is not the games fault and honestly its an old game. So I ended up doing some digging like I always do and found a great post here on steam in the KOTOR community. It goes in detail with safe links how to properly mod the game to basically be a remaster kinda like the GTA trilogy (That game is playable now and should be given a look if its on sale)
I will go over the good and bad without any spoilers
Good: Story is great and the characters are very well written. You make choices that really effect characters and that is tied to a morality bar kinda like in rdr2 and having that in a star wars game gives a lot of role playing opportunity's.
Bad: If you want the game to look not like a potato you have to mod it and deal with everything that entails and this is the best part, you cant use things like launchers and modpacks you have to manually install every mod. If you are a modder and know how all that works in detail no problem, but for a dude like me who just wants to play games its a whole new world. You dont have to mod the game to play it but you probably wont enjoy it as much. Ok also the combat is kinda hard to get used to because everything is RNG but its like hella dated (There are mods for this I just chose not to install anything that changed mechanics other than bug fixes). Oh and there is no auto save so if you make a mistake and didn't save for a while either prepare to meet the consequences or reload a old save from like 1-2 hours ago. other than that though I don't really have any complaints.
As of writing this review I have just finished the story with 38 hours of playtime and i cant wait to play 2. If you have the know how or patience to mod this gem I can't recommend it enough.
literally the best star wars game period! Not only that but it is also one of the best RPG's i've ever played
While the combat system may not be as dynamic and snappy as Dragon Age and I couldn't find any fun Blasters builds, it's still a very good RPG in the Star Wars universe. It's still very combat centric, but it offers a more nuanced take on the light/dark side approach than how the movies from 1-6 present it.
Do not recommend for ROG Ally X if you cannot connect to another screen and will only be playing on the Ally X handheld. Resolution issues on the handheld itself make it impossible to go beyond character creation. I tried messing with settings and ini files to no avail. Cannot even select resolution in options or with config utility. However, these resolution issues can be bypassed if you can connect your Ally X to another screen / monitor via HDMI.
The game itself is a classic if you can look past the older graphics. I mainly wanted to warn against playing on the Ally X as noted above.
good classic game ruined by crashes and bugs

I've got a weird soft spot for the older Star Wars video game titles, specifically the Jedi Academy games, which I initially held in the highest regard for what those classic games could be. After playing KOTOR, I have not only seen the true heights that a game in this franchise could reach, but I can also confidently say that this is one of my favorite Star Wars stories of all time.
That's not to say that the game is without issues or problems. However, most of them stem from typical BioWare-isms, bugs that didn't get stamped out, and being a product of the time period it was developed in. I never ran into any of the bugs, but going in blind without the patch or any guides, I only learned about them after I had begun playing the game, and honestly, it did make me hesitant to interact with particular companions. The companions are pretty great. However, some of the lines were clunky in the way they were read, but that's an issue I have with just about every BioWare title, so that's probably more of a personal grievance than an actual problem. My only other issue is that I wish the game were clearer in telling you when the point of no return is happening. I missed it, but there was a specific dialogue I wanted to get with Bastila that I couldn't because the story took precedent after a certain point.
Overall, the good far outweighs the bad. If you're curious about this game, buy it, play it, and give it a fair shot because, despite being old, it is one of the best stories in the franchise. Heck, I like it more than the films.
This game is broken as all hell. Mouse doesnt show when trying to make character. continuous spinning. honestly unplayable out the gate the fact that you have to go into the properties to even try to fix it is stupid. Heavily disappointed in steam fpr letting this slide
There is a reason when Steam promotes a "May the 4th" sale, Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 are at the top of the list. They are classics that should be experienced by you, gamer. Two choice saturated games that run on "real-time" turn based combat. Dated in numerous ways, yet each with golden cores that make it absolutely worth digging through the calcified crust of age.
Be wary, this game runs off of a 3.x D&D Star Wars system, which can add a lot of "game knowledge" overhead that some of us absolute degenerates live to ingest and process. If you are not a dyed-in-the-wool TTRPG nerd and for some reason dislike having 30+ feats to choose through, don't fret too much. KotoR1 & 2 are not especially difficult games, especially because they rewards power for combat through exploration and roleplaying. The stuff you'll be doing the other 2/3rds of the time, besides combat. The recommended build paths in game are... o-kay, so auto-leveling and equipping bigger numbers will see you through normal difficulty. Alternatively, you can destroy the game. Breaking open the carapace, then spine of 3.x numbers bloat to become a living God. Laughing condescendingly as you dissolve the game's final boss in a tide of Force Lightnings.
Both games are thoughtful examinations of the Star Wars universe. To me, that's the main appeal. If you've watched a Star Wars film and wished for more substantive exploration of the themes, KotoR 1 is here for you. There is war, there is philosophy, there is pazaak. You will experience the highs and lows of force-hood and a great hero's journey.
With KotoR 2 DOWNLOAD THE MOD THAT IMPLEMENTS VAST QUANTITIES OF CUT CONTENT. The Sith Lords Restored Content Modification (TSLRCM) is a 15-year in the making restoration. Today, it is available in the steam workshop as a one button fix. KotoR 2 is the interesting deconstruction of Star Wars, period. An examination of the jedi, their sibling sith, and how the galaxy contorts around these powers into twisted paradigms. A uniquely bitter experience, like hot coffee. Deeply satisfying and wakening.
I wrote this review once and applied it to both games.
Old school, nostalgic Star Wars. Just as fun as when I played it as a kid! :D
This is one of the best Star Wars games ever made. These days, it will feel dated, but the gameplay still holds up. The KOTOR series is a set of two games that set you as someone who isn't yet a Jedi and set you on a path to saving the galaxy. Some players prefer this game over the sequel, and some prefer the sequel. There are pros and cons to both games, but I would suggest not worrying about which is better and just play them both. They are both worth playing.
Although graphics aren't great anymore, the game is still very playable and the graphics aren't too bad. Controls are also not too bad for being an older game. The game allows you to pause combat if you want, and can even save during combat if you're struggling with a particularly difficult encounter and don't mind using saves to help you complete it. The story of the game is really well done and the voiceovers that are in the game are also well done.
Here are the only things I really think could have been improved:
* The inventory screen makes it harder to find new things you picked up.
* You can't influence your companions' light or dark side status like you can in the sequel, making it so your companions feel less important.
* You can only have 2 companions at a time, which makes it so you end up rarely using most of your companions. That's unfortunate as many companions are worth using.
* Companions will often run right into mines even if you're trying to disarm or recover the mine, causing it to explode. There are ways around it, but it can be challenging if trying to deal with mines when there are enemies nearby.
* Computer spikes are needed too often and you really don't find enough of them throughout the game. This can be considered a strategic part of the game... do you hack a computer or save the spikes for later in the game? But it just feels frustrating at times. Of course, very few things you can do on a hacked computer are required and are usually just ways to kill or weaken enemies before you see them, so it's not game breaking. You can reduce the number of spikes required by increasing your skills, but because you can only have 2 companions at a time and many companions only get 1 skill point per level, you usually only have one or two people who have a high skill in it and can't always keep them in your party. And making your main character skilled in it is usually not a good use of skill points. You can improve their attributes, which takes time because you don't get attribute points every level, but it may be better to use those attribute points for other attributes.
* There are certain parts in the game where you seem to be given a choice, but where there isn't actually a choice. This isn't a serious problem, but it feels like they may have either forgotten to complete the alternative options that the choice suggests or they ran out of time.
* Loot drops from killing enemies take too long to appear. You can't just kill something and leave, but have to stand around for a few seconds to wait and see if loot appears.
As far as the game on Steam goes...
* The game crashes now and then, usually on loading screens, so be sure you save regularly. Of course it autosaves frequently, so even if you forget to save, you won't lose too much time if that happens.
* Graphics are corrupted in certain areas of the game, especially areas that have a sky. But beyond looking bad, this doesn't make it so you can't play the game and usually doesn't last too long. For most users, disabling grass in the options fixes this problem.
In conclusion, if you like Star Wars, this game is a must play game, and so is the sequel. They may be dated, but they are still well worth it.
Note: You can ignore my Steam hours for this game as I used to play it when it first came out and have put in many more hours in the game. I still have the disk from back then.
DO NOT BUY
The game itself is still as amazing as it used to be. However, if you're using a PC that runs on AMD past the early 2020s, the game is literally unplayable due to random crashes. The first mission did not crash, but playing through the Lower City portion of the game is virtually impossible due to AMD related crashing. The vast majority of players in the year 2025 will NOT be able to complete the starting planet due to how frequently the game crashes in specific areas that are required to complete to progress the game. If you're planning on playing the game with an old PC, or restore your AMD to prior to 2022-ish, it may work.
One of the best Star Wars games ever made.
If you're having issues with crashes and you're using an AMD card try using the 22.4.2 driver, it solved basically all crashes for me.
I am not signing Disney's new Eula. I've owned this game for over a decade. let me play it without signing their "we can do whatever we want to you and you can't sue us ever" contract. If you think that's a joke, it's not! someone who bought a Disney+ subscription took their SO to a Disney owned Restaurant and their SO died to an allergy attack the staffed assured them would not happen. Disney, when sued, tried to make the matter disappear by proving that the Disney+ EULA was signed by the grieving individual.
I am not signing shit. Let me play my fucking game.
I really enjoy this game and would like to play it but it has so many bugs where your character gets stuck or the screen just freezes. Another gem from my childhood i can't replay :/

If you love Star Wars then this game is for you. Believe me it's worth your money. Every battles are indeed challenging and you will need a lot of strategy and build your stats and skill properly. You will definitely love it's lore
I cannot describe in words how much I love this game! It has great characters, great story, good mechanics and a wold that is engaging and absolutely brilliant.
having just purchased this game and started it up it was a bit hard to understand but after some clear understanding from the start of the game how this game works. and having now landed on the world taris and tryed out the controlls i can now see why people love this game soooo much the music and stuff is awsome as,and already iv been informed who bastala is and what taris is. honestly can see now why this games loved by people. have yet to see the rest of the game for myself.
Very good game, fun to play and has lightsabers. I love mystically hot sticks of impossible heat that somehow acts as a sword instead of a light
STAR WARS Knights of the Old Republic is a poetic tale about corruption and redemption, entirely up to your play style and choices. This remarkable role playing game provides countless hours of replay-ability, all the while immersing you into its captivating universe. While very familiar to fans of the film franchise, this narrative takes place centuries before the events of The Phantom Menace, allowing it to tell its own tales without the risk of lore-breaking retcons to the films. Everything happens so long ago, that there's plenty of time for the Galaxy Far, Far Away to change toward the events of the Prequel Trilogy.
Continuing off of the mention of its story, SWKOTOR does an excellent job of world-building to immerse you into its setting. Each planet you visit throughout the game, and each settlement, has its own history that you can uncover. From the different species to the different factions, this game provides a plethora of rich lore, even as far as providing history that can be otherwise irrelevant to the plot itself. You truly feel as if you've stepped into this new world and are living it in real time. Granted, the plot does revolve around your custom character developing amnesia from the start, in order to explain why you are ignorant of everything in this universe, but for as cliche as that may sound, it pays off in the end with the plot twist this game has. It may not be as compelling of a story as its sequel, however it was the stepping stone for the sequel and its own story--at least in my own personal opinion--is far more charming in a light-heart'd manner. It's story is in the same comprehensive level as the Original Trilogy, whereas the world building is more akin to the Prequel Trilogy or even the Solo movie. That is to say, there are bits of lore that may remind you of the Prequels, or even the scenery in some worlds. Playing this game had actually gave me a new appreciation for the Prequels. If you've found yourself disconnected from Star Wars due to the current handling of the franchise, this game may reinvigorate that awe.
Besides the narrative and world-building, the game itself runs smoothly as a turn-based-combat RPG. It's a movement and combat style that players of Star Wars The Old Republic would be familiar with. I admit it was quite jarring to experience at first, as I had been used to the more fluid style of The Force Unleashed or even the LEGO Star Wars games, however once you get used to the turn-based-combat, the game is actually exciting and even challenging! It requires strategy to take on certain scenarios, especially since you can customize and upgrade your character and [collectible] allies--each who have their own personalities, mind you. Speaking of allies, there is an affinity system, providing even more branching paths and replay-ability. Being a Jedi, there is a fairly simple corruption system, which also impacts your allies. The more you follow the darker path, the more you gain access to darker and more powerful Force Abilities, but this is reflected in your character's face starting to go pale, darkness forming around the eyes, and a yellow tinge painting your irises. It's a nice touch, especially for those familiar with the Dark Side corruption as depicted in the films.
To reiterate a previous line above, this game revitalizes endearment for the Star Wars franchise. It's far more respectful to the source material, whilst remaining far more original, than the Sequel Trilogy of films, and tells a tale that most ages can enjoy! It's neither immature nor complex, and it's certainly not too grim for teenagers and young adults to enjoy. It is also a great introduction into the duology, allowing you to learn the story that would later lead to the events of the amazing, albeit far more mature sequel!
One of the best ever. Has everything a Starwars RPG could possibly have for its time. Wish 2 would have been completed, wish there was a 3. MMORPG version isent bad, I just wish for more of this too. I feel like these days are long, long gone however
The first time I played this game was way back in the early 2000s on the Xbox. While not all of it has aged gracefully, this is still a masterful RPG and a testament to the fact that Star Wars lore is so much better than the Star Wars films and shows we usually get. If you enjoy character pieces and sweeping story arcs, this might be for you. The gameplay is semi-turn based, and it adheres to the D&D rules mostly. Worth a try!
Chat this game was excellent. I love putting twileks in slavery and being super evil. Very good and re playable
Finally replayed this game since what has to be 2004-2005. Peak old school BioWare RPG, can really feel the inspiration of the original Mass Effect game while playing. Great writing, actual choices in dialogue, good combat. UI is definitely dated and the game can be a pain to play on newer hardware since it's so old, fullscreen bug is very annoying and tabs you out of cutscenes and can crash your game so make sure you save often. Other wise a must play experience for RPG and Star Wars fans.
A great Star Wars romp through space, also an excellent mix of dnd and scifi to really enjoy.
This is one of the few games out there that deserves the superlatives thrown around about it. Choice and actions matter, and what you do determines how things play out.
While the gameplay is a bit dated by today's standards, its still fun and deep if you can get into it.
20 years ago I borrowed a mostly busted Xbox from a best friend just to play KOTOR.
Every time the game had to load there was about a 25% chance the game would crash.
I just asked Grok to do the math and it said I probably had to restart ~100 times.
Which I definitely did because I'll never forget force lighting up Darth Malek back then!
One of the best RPGs ever made and one of the best Star Wars stories ever told.
This is the most frustrating game I've ever played and that's because it hates modern hardware.
First I booted the game and everything was stuck in 800x600 and I couldn't go to windowed mode. Okay cool, found out there's a patcher so I installed that and replaced my .exe and now I can play in 1920x1080 windowed, awesome!
Then I make my character, get into combat, and as soon as it ends I can't move my character. Do some searching, find out any framerate above 72FPS causes your traversal script to break. Okay, download rivatuner and set the FPS cap to 72FPS.
Awesome, seems to be going great, I play for 6 hours straight with no issues and beat Taris. Oh no, in the undercity there's black textures streaking across my screen and preventing progress. Okay, let's google, oh apparently having grass of all things enabled causes the bug. Disabled grass, all works fine.
Get to the Ebon Hawk. Pause and save my game, I'll play tomorrow.
Tomorrow comes, try loading my game from the main menu, every single save crashes on load. Search around, the only fix is to delete everything in the "currentgame" and "futuregame" folders, start a new game then load your game from the in-game pause menu. I do that, and it works, but now I have to do that every single time I play the game because the fix for disabling pause buffer and soft shadows doesn't work on it.
Now I'm on Kashyyyk and loading into exteriors crashes the game, look online, you need to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2. Do that, works fine now. Waiting on the next inevitable issue.
And another issue cropped up a day later, I quicksaved and the game crashed at the same time, corrupting my quicksave entirely. Fortunately, I had a manual save from 20 mins before, but man that took the wind out of my sails.
Another thing that likes to happen is sometimes your ally and player AI breaks: you can start a fight, but your two companions stand still and are locked onto the enemies but wont do anything. You can solve this with quicksaving then quickloading, but it got me killed a few times.
I feel like I've worked 4 hours doing tech support just to play this thing but I loved this game. I beat it on the Xbox years ago but only remember the plot twist. Despite my headaches, I do recommend this game, but be prepared for some major headaches ironing out all the compatibility issues you'll face. Even if you're not a Star Wars fan, which I don't consider myself either, this game as an RPG is one of the best and you can see a lot of the DNA that carried over into Mass Effect. All in all, if we judged this game as a product of its time, it's easily a 10/10 and likely worked out of the box back then. Judging it by modern hardware standards, it's an 8/10 due to the tedium of getting everything to cooperate, but once it does, you get one of the best Star Wars games and RPGs ever made. I never felt restricted to one path, I played light at first, then I turned to the Dark Side on Korribaan but the game allowed me to redeem myself which I chose to do after Juhani gave me a speaking to. That kind of flexibility is absent in a lot of modern games, even BioWare's own. KotoR really lives up to its reputation of being one of the best games ever made. I hope Steam gives it the same treatment KotoR 2 got so it works better for future players.
Jolee Bindo is the best Star Wars character. Game is pretty solid overall.
Best story of ANY RPG ever!!! Best Combat style over anything except the Enigma Engine. KOTOR set the bar so high, it has never been surpassed, and we're talking 20 plus years ago now! I'm playig it all over again, and while I have the original disks, I bought it again on steam to preserve them. LOVE this game!!
Replaying this game for the first time in a long time, haven't played it since having it new for the Xbox when I was young. It was really good as far as the story and detail with writing, especially the lore of the sandpeople on Tatooine. I credit the dialog in this game for helping instill in my young brain the understanding of what is xenophobia and what is segregation, both themes on the first planet you visit. I learned a desire for non-violent solutions as well. This game does a good job of making bad choices really silly and undesirable to me, which adds to the humor of playing a dark side play through.
Spoilers and fun fact: I did not know until recently that Juhani was the first character in Star Wars to be written to identify as a non-cis character. That is pretty cool, but a bummer though that it had to be written deep into the story since Juhani is an optional party member where if you decide she is unredeemable, she can be killed and you would never know her backstory. I only found out because of my third play through when I was younger.
Classic turn-based game considered among the best of all Star Wars games - great writing, strong character backgrounds, and interesting quests. With mods, an even better experience!
Put it this way... KOTOR has been my favourite game since I was 8 in 2004... Imma always come back to this game til the day I die!!!
You should try it too :)
KOTOR did not age well - it doesn't like wide screen, it doesn't like resolutions of last two decades and it frequents with rendering errors on newer hardware, but slap enough patches, fixes and mods, and the game starts to shine once again. Gameplay-wise it is rather simplistic Bioware RPG, with combat powered by dnd-esque dice rolls, illusion of real-time and not particularly complex quest design. The good news are that the game is carried by its' story and cast, which while being trope-y, are worthwhile and possess this old storyteller magic our expectations of have been successfully subverted in the last decade.
It's so silly to give Darth Revan such a cool design only to relegate him to flashback cutscenes, what were they thinking???
A true classic, which contains possibly the most jaw-dropping plot twist in history. Or at least eleven year old me thought so.
Kotor 1 is like a wise old man with a very good story to tell, but gets dementia every time a cutscene loads as the game crashed a lot for me. One of the best story driven games I have ever played, If you can put up with the crashes, give this game a shot.
Still one of my favourite Star Wars games of all time. Flexible play style, great characters, amazing story, fun gameplay. Easy high recommendation.
*The* best Star Wars game of all time. Bioware's masterpiece. You get to be the "Luke Skywalker" of your own Star Wars journey, filled with fun gameplay, a top-tier story, and an amazing array of supporting characters that make the game come alive.
Bioware at it's best. I adore this game in every sense.
God I hope the remake ends up being good.
this game is awesome but i keeps on crashing if the game worked it would be a 10/10
I modded it for 12 hours and broke 8 saves, barely became a Jedi and began antagonising people. 10/10 immersive game that accurately depicts what it's like to fall to the dark side.
Amazing game that's held back by dated design philosophy and ancient programming that prevents it from being even remotely manageable to play on modern hardware without going through a ridiculous 100+ mod community playlist (Only an idiot would go through the KOTOR NeoCities Mod Build, perhaps an idiot like myself who thought this game stands up in 2025. It doesn't.).
Unfortunately, due to Electronic Arts being literal demons from Hell that destroy everything gamers love about their favorite hobby, we won't be seeing an official remaster of this and KOTOR 2 any time soon.
I love this game series, it's just a shame it was abandoned for the worthless The Old Republic MMO. I'm sorry, but thinking about playing this game is 100x more fun than actually playing it.
