I'm waiting for a game to dl , was scrolling thru and found this one. I only played .1hrs apparently. Watched a trailer and it really looks like a great game. Read some reviews. Mostly bad. 1 person CAN do all the work to make a successful game. What makes it NOT, is the pressure for release before it is ready. it is def NOT the programmers fault. This happens ALL the time. It still looks like a great game and is sad and unfortunate the Programmer wasn't given the time needed. I haven't reinstalled but just wanted to say great effort on trying.

Looks great, but isnt, could do with a serious overhaul, particularly in relation to aiming, the iron sights are anything but accurate, and the weapons with tac sights miss, better off just waiting until the bugs get close and then open fire. Over all a shame as it could have been a really good survival horror game set on a massive ship!

This is a perfect example of why I try to give every game that looks interesting a chance: sometimes I find something I really like that is very unpopular. I was able to finish the game with the ASMI ending (which is terrible, but more on that later) in 3.2 hours, so the game is pretty short. However, it's pretty replayable which I will touch on.

So what this is, basically, is a very stripped-down System Shock 2 with randomized elements. Before you get too excited, I mean the plot and shooting is reminiscent of system shock 2, not anything else. The ship is made of 23 maps that I know of, and you shuffle between them trying to complete objectives to reach your desired ending. Resources respawn in the same places but enemies are randomized, which means victory can sometimes feel like a crapshoot or that the developer didn't want to properly balance the game. There are a lot of environmental cues to pick up on and exploration is required to find different items, audio logs or characters. All of the voice acting is amateur and the audio logs are local to the terminal they are accessed on so you can't play audio logs while you continue to play, which is not good. There are also no subtitles for anything, so big warning for the hearing impaired; I myself was barely able to follow along. However, the plot is decent even if derivative and the atmosphere is very good, even if there is far too much blood to be reasonable.

About the story: ASMI is an artificial intelligence that wants you to bring the ship back to earth. Her route gives you easy access to the armory early on as well as other areas that are normally locked. However, her route is more boring; for one thing, I was never sent into personnel at any point. For another, all of the survivors become hostile to you when you go on this route. Something else to note is that you are locked into the ASMI route *as soon as you touch her console at the beginning of the game*. Do NOT do this. There might be an opportunity to get out of it later however I did not want to risk it as by that point all the survivors were hostile to me. The other characters have dialogue and give you objectives, and there are other endings you can get where you escape with one of the crew members. I recommend trying for one of these.

I have a couple thoughts on the mechanics. First, the gunplay is... not great. I do feel like you have the tools required to fight the enemies for sure, but the animations and sounds aren't brilliant. It works though, even if the early weapons get completely outclassed later. Secondly, the fact that all pickups respawn means that once you know where certain things are or have access to the armory, you just end up making a couple pit stops at the armory and/or medical before you go anywhere. This is fine, but it's not very horrific. A big part of survival horror is limited resources, and the resources here are infinite; there's just a limit to what you can carry and there is no way to heal on command. Thirdly, the inventory is a great idea. It gives you the ability to assign all of your weapon quickslots, so when that pistol gets outclassed or the MK3 assault rifle is no longer useful you can move the shotgun or MK4 into that slot. It's also interesting because the weapon attachments being bound to specific weapons makes your weapon choice more complex than usual. Fourth, the enemy design is remarkably varied but I think slightly underutilized. Most of the enemies I ended up fighting by the end were the big insect monsters which are powerful but very boring. There were a couple enemy types that I only ended up seeing once or twice and while this could be down to the random spawn elements I think that rng might need some tweaking. Finally, why are there only two save slots?? There is a quicksave you can drop anywhere and the autosave. Why aren't there manual hard saves? This is one of the biggest problems I have with the game design.

In addition to the story, which is the only thing I have discussed, there are 3 other modes. I don't know if these are any good and don't really intend to play them, but they include a horde mode, some challenge modes and a survival mode.

As for technical issues: I didn't run into many bugs but the small health packs did not work for me for whatever reason, and I had 2 hard crashes which my computer DID NOT LIKE. I was not able to get out of the window at all to interact with my desktop. Win+Tab did nothing, Ctrl+Alt+Del did nothing, just had to restart everything. For this reason I recommend playing the game in windowed mode. No other bugs, just general jank which I think the atmosphere makes up for. The game is also kind of unoptimized so note that if you have a potato.

Ultimately, I really really enjoyed the game. I did not pay full price, but bought the ghostship bundle. I would not have paid full price seeing the screenshots and there are too many qualifiers to the experience for me to give it a blanket recommendation at that price. You really have to be willing to put up with the jank, be willing to die a lot, and enjoy exploration with minimal hud elements to be able to enjoy the game. If that sounds like you, I think you should give this a shot.

To be honest, I don't remember if I even bought this game or someone bought it for me. Largely because my PC was potato of potato at the time. After upgrading and deciding to redownload this game on a whim, I can safely say that, regardless of getting this game for free or not, I think it was both money well spent and not so well spent.

This game is.... decent. But could have used a little more time in the oven. The pause menu should allow for in-game mapping of controls. Needs something a bit more than just quick-saving and quick-loading. And there should, in my opinion, be a mini-map. Though, on that last one, I fully understand the appeal of not having one. The overall setting/theme of the game is further enhanced by not having one. But I personally prefer having a mini-map.

It's very clear that the dev's put a lot of work into this game. While I find it a little hard to get into, it's a game I recommend if you're willing to look past these initial flaws I can name off the top of my head. The game is, indeed, free roam as advertised. And I was able to catch a glimpse of the constant random events that are also advertised during the first bit of free roam I was given. For example, the ship ai requested to speak in person once I reached the bridge. But, after quick loading, I was immediately attacked by aliens and the ship ai didn't say anything once I reached the bridge a second time.

TL;DR - Game has flaws but the devs did pretty well, imo. Buy it if you're willing to look past said flaws.

Pros
- fantastic level design
- cool weapons
- good story w/multiple possible endings

Interesting
- 90% of alien encounters are randomised; a hallway which is swarming with aliens may be completely empty the next time you pass through or re-load

Cons
- small, fast moving enemies ("ankle-biters") are extremely difficult to hit
- NO MANUAL SAVE; auto-save (at deck entries) & a single quick-save only; this means that if the game crashes or the save file becomes corrupted you must start all over (this is the reason for my down-vote)

I tried to play this but there are way too many issues that should have been fixed a long time ago. This game could have been something good if the developer had finished it. I consider it still in beta but at this point (6 years later) I doubt the developer will fix said issues. Throughout the game it states to, "Shoot the enemy from a distance" but that is pretty much impossible as your weapons seem to be set on, "Spray and Pray" mode even if you are aiming. And the enemy rushes you anyways and then tends to get stuck within you or pushes you into the wall or the floor that you can't get out of.

CDF Ghostship is the second game to be released as part of the Ghostship trilogy and second in the overall chronology set before the events of Ghostship Aftermath. Instead of playing the role of a science officer this time you step into the shoes of CDF pilot Zak Thomas, dispatched from the Goliath to investigate a sudden radio silence on Icarus 3 who returns to the Goliath to find it a... ghost ship. But what happened in the three days you were gone?

Like Aftermath, the game is set on board the Goliath and as before the game is ‘open world’ where you have the run of the ship except for areas locked off by keypads or closed for narrative purposes, but the game world is expanded through the ability to go to a nearby spacestation (and I’ve also seen some screenshots which suggest you can go to the planet’s surface too but I’ve yet to experience that).

As with Aftermath you embark on a randomised storyline and encounter randomised enemies, but even once your storyline is set you get to make some choices to influence the storyline and you can also deviate from it to explore at your leisure. And this is where the game really starts to expand upon Afternath.

This time we can encounter survivors who can either be hostile to Zak or offer him quests (fetch me this from the other side of the ship or help get me out of here and I’ll help you etc.), items (such as keycards to access parts of the ship, and an expanded arsenal of weapons to find.

The game isn’t marketed as such but it is a survival horror game with some FPS elements. Combat is regular but the majority of the game involves treading down dark, deserted corridors and rooms which paint a tragic tale of what happened on board the Goliath, fleshed out through data foils (readable documents) and audio logs of former crew members.

Gone is the flashlight and oxygen management to be replaced with a more mobile Zak Thomas with a streamlined HUD and more health. Unlike the permadeath of Aftermath, the game has different difficulty settings and autosaves each time you go through a compression chamber (usually a zone transition) but you can also manually save when you like too - all this makes for a much more accessible game to more casual players than Aftermath.

It’s worth calling out the excellent soundtrack (reused from Aftermath) which shows influences from Alien, Dawn of the Dead, Resident Evil and Dino Crisis and it’s possibly the best indie game soundtrack I’ve ever heard. The game is also fully voice-acted, from the ship’s duplicitous AI (ASMI) to the audio logs to the survivors that you meet.

All of the above was put together by one developer and a true testament to the skills of MAG Studios. It’s disappointing to see so many negative reviews but the game has had numerous upgrades since it’s early access days and plays, sounds and looks fantastic.

If you’re looking for a non-linear six-fi first person survival horror set aboard a derelict spaceship teeming with terrors lurking in the shadows, CDF is for you.

Piece of crap barely runs on a gtx 970 without stuttering if you get it to run in the first place, also malware programs in the game files that grab your Steam info, watch out.

Dark and fog filled game. Can't really tell where the enemy are coming from. Enemy has very fast and erratic movement and it's hard to see them as they jump or fly by you. Tried onslaught mode, just one map and it seemed the same.

IDK will still mess about w/ this game for awhile. I recommed you do not purchase unless it's a buck or less and or in a cheap bundle of some sort. Really reminds me of a super cheap version of Dead Effect which is a whole lot better than this game.

Will update this at a later time when I've had enough... Cannot recommend it in this state : (

I downloaded this game not sure what to expect. having only 1 dev and not a team, and not having the big budgets that most of these games have. Truthly, I was pleasently surprized. I've played only an hour so far and the first 15 was getting a feel for the game. I started to enjoy playing the game. I like the open world aspect. the graphic are well done. If you are like me and like exploration with random enemies and the "oh I know there are 2 enemies around the corner" then you will like this. the game does have it qwerks. such as the aiming takes getting used to. if you are used to auto aiming and not getting a feel of how a new gun may fire, then you may have issues with the aiming, some of the guns are a little big. last the objectives could be clearer or a map provided. overall this game is well done for not having a team of developers, and for the price you will have fun.

A failled first person shooter, and can be seen very quickly. Sometimes crashes in hard way. Graphics are poor and dark, places and decorations are very dull, most by the abuse of black and grey plane textures, sunking the wish for exploring. The mechanics is classic of genre, but was horribly implemented: guns are too big in screen, and its aiming not working fine, umpardonable in this kind of game. No hand weapons. Foes are excesively fast, and some are designed in too simple way. Pickable items, like ammo, are too small. But the worst are key bindings errors, that may unplayable since begining. There are better options, indies, recent or made many years ago. An example of product that must be retired from selling. Is not recommend at any price.

I downloaded this game installed it, hoping for a fun shooter instead I got an interesting looking game that was incredibly frustrating to play.

First, it crashed three times before deciding to run, but then it started. First thing I do is change the resolution to Full Screen and the native resolution of my monitor. Wait. No apply changes button. Had to exit the game, restart then the Apply Changes button was there.

I glance at the control options. Hmmm. It says weapons are bound to the number keys. Except they aren’t. The Shotgun and SMG. Everything else I had to use quick select to get to/ Except it wasn’t very quick to cycle through. Did I mention you can’t re-map the keys? Because you can’t remap the weapon keys.

Combat. I’ll admit I’m an older gamer and maybe my reflexes aren’t what they were when I was playimg Half-life, halflife-2 Duke Nuk’em, Blood and about 30 or 40 other shooters. But I can still play System Shock 2, which has difficulty levels that are no lie. Guns are pretty inaccurate and trying to shoot fast moving aliens with small hit boxes with guns that can’t hit much, even when aiming makes combat a chore. I didn’t play long, maybe it gets better, but I’ll try something more fun or just replay Bioshock or Arma 3.

Maybe it's just because I went in expecting the biggest load of crap that I ever laid eyes on, but I honestly didn't hate this game. In fact, I'd say that I'm glad that I bought it. Though the game does feel like it was made on a rather steep budget, I actually kind of enjoy the basic gameplay that it offers. Considering the price of your average game these days, this game isn't too expensive, though I'd still reccomend getting it on sale, if at all. To sum it up, it's not a bad game, but you're not missing out on anything if you don't play it.

The majority of the weapons tend to be posititioned incorrectly for a first person perspective, if this issue is fixed and a basic waypointing mechanism is implimented(?), then I can possibly recommend this game. As it is, it is a mess of a game and not worth playing.

These issues aside, I think it is a very interesting concept and very much worth expanding on.

But, because of these issues, I cannot reccomend this game at this current time.

I'm not going to write a review Im just going to say this game is really fun. Its a jolt of realism in a market saturated with hand holding FPS shooters. This game is hard, because it realistic. All the weapons just feel real and solid. I havent had this much fun with an FPS game since probably Doom or the orignal Duke Nukem.

I hope you make enough money on these titles to take this game concept to the next level, but please no arrows on the ground telling you where to run, no sparkly's that mark interactive objects. I love how this game forces you to think / plan and remember.

Great work. Too bad so many gamers these days cant appreciate it, they are just spolied by the hand holding of todays games.

Wow, well I had ok hopes for this when I downloaded it. Real let down, holy crap do the controls suck. Its also extremely hard to figure out where you are being attacked from and where the enemies are, as whenever you are under threat deafening battle music starts playing, that and there doesn't seem to be directional sound effects from the bad guys.

I gave it an hour, waste of $17 sadly. cool ambience, they tried.

This game has steadily improved with each new update and its good if you like a story , not only to follow through at your leisure but also fighting to reach your objectives. You can play on easy mode or crank up through normal to nightmare if you like a challenge. Its the same story but the harder modes come with more achievements.

I personally don't think its for the faint hearted and you do have to apply some grey matter to work out some of the codes required for unlocking doors or reaching objectives within the game in story mode.If you die however don't worry you are re spawned in the last airlock you came through. If you've already taken a beating and are not happy you can just jump back there anyway without dying? The earlier versions could sometimes give you too much detail on some missions while leaving you to guess on others, but this has also been improved.

If your not too bothered about story lines there may be something to occupy you in the other game modes , maybe something like onslaught , which gives you more of an in your face type of battle once the action begins.Challenge mode on the other hand is more sustained and requires a slightly different approach. With skirmish mode and simulation mode as well there should be something to interest most types of gamer.

This game has good ideas that are poorly executed. The guns iron sights are inaccurate at best, but the worst thing about this game currently is the difficulty. Its not so much the amount of damage the enemies do but they move so fast they are hard to hit, and there hit boxes are weird, The worst part is the insect like enemies dive towards you, This gives you knock back, then they turn instantly and do the same to your back. This knocks you everywhere, which is frustrating and if there are more then 3, you are basically stun locked, and the enemies have even gotten stuck in my character model and repeatedly do damage. This would not be a problem, but it's happened a large number of times, not to mention the other bad bugs like, The mouse in inventory is hyper sensitive, and the camera has pop out of the character model a number of times. This is early access so I hope the Dev does a large number of updates to address these issues because this game needs a lot of work. As it stands right now, avoid this game like a rat during the black plague.

Small update to this review. The game has slighty improved, the inventory now works and the enemy animations are better, however the game is still not worth it in my opinion, it still consists of saving and reloading because of small enemys bouncing you everywhere. It's a dam shame, I want to like it, but I just can't it's just too awful.

I don't want to be a negative nancy here and yes it's early access an actually has a lot more promise than similar uninspired identical looking shovelware that's floating around but maybe not at this price.
I'd like to see a lot more polish, perhaps an actual release state, or a price cut. As it is now I just can't recommend it, there's comparably better titles at equal or less cost, and this one just fails to stand out.
The comparisons with System Shock and Dead Space are thoroughly undeserved, even if the game tries to ape them a bit in style it has none of the trappings that made the aforementioned games good, it just looks similar. Gunplay is not a fun affair as of now, and frankly, there's not much else this game has to offer. Even the random aspects don't do as much for replay value as they'd like you to believe, because let's face it, if two zombies or in fact two zombies and a bug spawn on you on a certain spot, who will notice all that much difference. This might need a bigger enemy variety or even a procedurally generated map like some other game about an actual ghost ship that comes to mind, has.
As far as I can tell, the title's biggest crime is its awful mediocrity. With the flood of abysmal content that plagues steam at this time, it is a good game in comparison. But put next to products of a quality that is considered standard these days? Not as much.

But don't listen to me, tune in to some unbiased gameplay footage first. *Cough*.. I went into it with very positive expectations actually.

UPDATE June 12, 2015:

I have been asked to update my review. Ok, I finally got around to it. Unfortunately it's not going to improve things. When I tried to play to update my opinion I found some insane things that simply stopped me from playing. Here are the most important reasons I quit playing after only a few minutes. I will leave it at that:

* The popup tooltips do not have any support for controllers. So I can run around in the game with a controller but have to switch to my mouse and keyboard when a tooltip pops up? Right...
* The guns are placed in THE WORST way I have ever seen. EVER. Why, WHY, would a person hold a gun like that? Take the handgun, when I picked this gun up the game character holds it way up to the right blocking a big portion of the screen. When you aim it moves it way over to the left and way back in a way that makes absolutely no sense at all. It feels like the character is somehow holding the gun beside their head, and behind it at the same time. Soon after picking up the pistol I picked up some sort of a rocket launcher. This gun took up more than HALF THE SCREEN. Simply unacceptable.

That was when I shut the game down. Read the original review if you like. I'm out.

Original Review:

Keeping in mind that this is an early access review (although when it is this short I have trouble calling it a review), I can not currently recommend CDF Ghostship. The game seems like it will be really cool when some more work is put into it, but at the moment there are things that make it too frustrating for me.

Shooting

Shooting can be painful.

  • Guns that do not reload but recharge instead are nice, but there is no clear indication of this which can definitely be a problem in battle.
  • Hitting what you shoot at is often difficult because the enemy hit boxes are too small or oddly shaped, and the guns are horribly inaccurate.
  • The UI is not well designed (yet?) and does not indicate well your reserves of ammo.

Enemies

  • Having a few enemies be annoying is fine, but when the majority of your enemies are based around being annoying you have a problem.
  • Tiny enemies with tiny hit boxes moving around fast with inaccurate weapons = This is dumb, I'll play another game.

UI

I know, it is Early Access. I get that. I'm a game developer, I know what it is like. That said, I'm also a gamer.

  • I would not recommend you go into the inventory screen ("I" button). The mouse moves so fast I can hardly find it and it almost always causes the game to do some of the weirdest glitching I've ever seen.
  • [*]The UI does not well indicate the amount of information you need. This was mentioned above as well.

Finally...

Any other problem I could mention with it is no big deal to me at the moment so I will leave it at that. The bottom line here is that it is playable, but if you are short on cash I would wait.

One other thing to note is that while the game does support side by side 3D (Oculus Rift), the UI is NOT built for it and the guns float right in front of your face not only making you uncomfortable but also blocking much of your vision. It is not playable with the Rift.
