This game is awful. I can not overstate this fact. Give this trash a wide berth.
After me playing it once it doesn't even run anymore. Which is a good thing. I am GLAD it no longer runs! This is easily one of the worst games on Steam at the moment of writing this review.
The audio:
There is a loud, constant, static hissing noise which which plays for the entire duration of the game. It is much than anything in the game. You can barely hear other "sound effects", but those are also nothing but crackling, distorted static screeches that barely audible. I doubt they would have made much of a difference in the audio fidelity though. The game has no volume settings. I had to turn my system volume all the way down to 10% to make it bearable. To sum it up, the audio is about as pleasant as a root canal without anaesthetics while also getting your eardrums punctured.
The graphics:
They are... not awful. But I would not describe them as good either. The 3D-effect is okay but it is wasted on the uninspired, unimaginative level design. The ships are just rubbish. They look more like shiny dog turds with some lights on than futuristic spacecraft. They made better-looking SHMUPs in 90's.
The Gameplay:
The controls are touchy and finicky. Also the default controls are set up in an idiotic way. Z=up, F=up, S=Down... what? At least you can remap them. But it doesn't really matter. There is almost no feeling of control. You have one type of ship with 2 firing/flight modes, which are pointless. The enemies come at you in predictable waves and have fixed flight patterns. They also shoot at you from outside of the screen before they appear.
Stability/game engine:
None. The game stopped working after I played it once. Now when I try to start it up it blanks the primary screen and then flickers and flashes my secondary monitor like a jigsaw puzzle, flashing and flickering for a few minutes and then closing and restarting the game executable as soon as it manages to load the title screen on the primary monitor. Basically to get tnough play-time for this review I had to sit there watching my monitors flicker for several minutes, and listen to intermittent static noise.
As I looked at my task manager I could not help but have giggle at the irony of the "A Super Schmup (32-bit)" entry flickering in and out of my task list.
Yes. Schmup. Not a SHMUP. Try looking up "Schmup" on Urban Dictionary (nsfw). It's priceless. But also a fitting description for this game.
Unable to skip long menu animations. No hints or instructions, which left me lost. the default key configuration was wierd beyond belief. Z=up.
Gameplay was also felt like it was not tested. Blocky movement.
There are several free alternatives that are far better than this one.
"Wasn't fun"
A nicely designed shooter. I like the TRON-esque design.
Great for a $1 on sale...
Before I get started, I want to say that I am a HUGE fan of shoot 'em ups, and I really had high hopes for this one.
Those hope were quickly dashed.
So here's the thing:
While this game DOES look visually stunning and has nice controls, it will murder your ears with the uncontrollably loud in-game static. The is due to a issue with the game. It uses the LAV Audio codec, and it conflicts with people using the K-lite Codec pack or the CCCP codec pack. If you have either one of those installed on your PC, you can't play this game.
IMHO, having to remove a Codec pack which lots of users have today for various things (Video editing being one), and not having ANY way of adjusting the in-game audio (there are ZERO controls for audio adjustment), doesn't justify the price.
I gave this game as much of a chance as my ears could bear, but to no avail. Until the devs can get around to fixing it, which I don't think will happen as this game was released 2 years ago - Save your money.
There are better shoot 'em up games on steam, grab any one of those.
I'm a little nuetral on this one. Its a pretty game with lots of bright vibrant colors and moving pieces. But the music is repetitive to the point of being a distraction.
Absolute Garbage. However a great Steam Community Market opener.
I love 2d shooters and I love gradius type games, but wow, simply stunned at how fast I put this game down and whacked my head against the keyboard. Plays great on a control, but with so much grand 2d shooters in the market, this one definetly feels like it was rushed. Hence the name i guess? The first screen looks awesome, and then it stops, moving beehive cells are your background, throughout everywhere, I'm not sure if they really tried to be unique or simply got lazy half ways but same ol enemies bland backgrounds, with really bad powerups make this game very forgetable. Try it if its on sale, it is hard, somewhat. You do get shields and have lives to waste, but if you played bullet hell games, it actually isn't that hard, it just feels so empty when you play it. Maybe if you were high on something might you find this game entertaining, the background sort of pulses and you can shoot some of the level away. Bosses are alright but at just a coupld of them and no checkpoint save system, it feels like a chore to come back to it and pass it, I would rather fish in World of Warcraft than play this anytime soon.
Its worth the price its a different kinda SHMUP "shootem-up" but im so sick of people amking these SHMUPs that dont think out side the box. When Einhander for playstation came out and, was blown away, I thought after that we where going to have a hole bunch of great copy cats but nope, I know of only one other game that is trying to cope that after all this time and its on steam too but I cant remember the name ger.
Controls are everything for a schmup and this one is irratatingly sloppy.
If I can ever get it to work, I'll let you know what I think of it.
Avoid.
I've been a shmup player for years, and this game is boring and derivative. The "feel" is all wrong, nothing moves with any aggression. The player's shot type is very strange and oddly small, making precision aiming a requirement. The combo system sucks because there are huge stretches of time where no enemies appear on screen; you're limited to chaining the very simple groups the trot out onto the screen mindlessly. Maybe it gets better, I couldn't tell, I can only play the game for a minute at a time before it freezes and I have to kill the runaway process from the Task Manager.
I have no idea what the sound design is like, because all I hear is static. The developer quickly blames this on codec packs and capture software, and the solution is "uninstall them". Apparently just to presence of these things is enough to cause issues. Maybe software conflicts made sense in the Win9x days, but there's absolutely no excuse for it today. The real issue is the audio subsystem he depends on.
Some users report the game boots to a blank screen. I didn't bother to read the thread on that.
The game hasn't been updated since it was published. Considering how the developer is handling feedback on the forums, I wouldn't expect any either. Syder Arcade is often on sale and is much more interesting than this, I'd recommend taking your money over there.

Otherwise it is the most unisipred shooter I have ever seen - and that is saying a lot because I've seen a crapton of shooters.
There are two types of stage enemies not includeing bosses. The pew-pew sound effects are awful and the music was insipid.
The graphics are very shiny 3D objets that are bland beyond words. Your ship is basiclly a C with a spike sticking out of it that can turn on it's side to navigate some of the utterly repetitive tunnel sections.
Even if you bought this game for a dollar remeber you must still spend your time playing it and it's not worth it by a long shot.
This game just won't work for me. I've called the creator, and his solution that worked for another user just refuses to work for me. I have no idea why it won't run, and if you have an Intel HD 4000 GPU, don't buy this whatsoever.
Not bad not good
Short, but.... pointless.
This is a great little game. I admit I was disappointed at first to see no mouse compatibility in-game, it's played entirely with keyboard. Just a preference of mine I always hope to see, but I shouldn't be surprised there isn't one here.
I only encountered one small bug with the in-game pause menu but this may only be an issue for me.
There is a huge lack of options under the settings with just fullscreen on/off, difficulty, key bindings and one other which I don't know what it is. This doesn't bother me at all, but is something others might want to take into account.
There is no customization for your ship whatsoever that I can see. Powerups are temporary and primarily obtained by destroying enemies, otherwise there is no weapon or ship upgrades. You can flip your ship around for slower, more accurate attacks and dodging. The dodging seems forced in some areas however to get you to actually use your ship on it's side, because it's very easy to just leave your ship flat and spam the two, faster guns.
Also I didn't seem to notice a scoreboard, though I did notice something about my score being uploaded. I'm not sure if there's a place online to view leaderboards; it would be nice as that is the game's point.
I'm giving this a thumbs up, why? Because for it's price this game is an amazing grab. The controls are responsive, the game is pleasing to look at; the hit-boxes are forgiving, maybe too forgiving for your enemies, but that can just add to the challenge. So there's only one level? So this is only $2.00 and I think a lot of work went into this for that price despite what it lacks. I'm enjoying this game for what it is, who isn't going to give a game a thumbs up if they're enjoying it?
