!!! WARNING: GO TO YOUR PROGRAM SETTINGS AND TURN VSYNC ON !!!
I'm not sure if this is a Windows 10 issue but the game runs too quickly if you have vsync set to off in your global settings. I experienced variable framerates for my entire playthrough as Clive (I'd never played the game before and didn't realize something was wrong lol). Kind of shocks me so many people think the game is difficult since I beat it on Hard mode in my first run in a little over an hour while experiencing variable framerates - after looking at footage online, I played a bunch of the game on 2x-4x speed lol. And it uh, still wasn't that hard? It wasn't until Duck Mode that I realized something must be wrong.
Another important note before you purchase: this version has 1 less playable character than the HD collection on consoles. It's not a big deal, but worth noting to buy that instead if you want the definitive edition.
Anyway, on to the review I guess. Gunman Clive is a pretty run-of-the-mill platformer. You jump and you shoot, that's it. It's a micro game that entertains for its short runtime and doesn't try to revolutionize anything. It's simple and breezy. The soundtrack is alright, and the artstyle is pretty fun and unique. That's probably the thing that makes the game standout the most. The story is the standard save the damsel in distress trope. Lots of enemy designs and stage designs that you've seen before if you've played a bunch of 2D platformers. Fair bit of homages too: a minecart level as a shoutout to Donkey Kong Country, gravity reversals a la VVVVVV or Metal Storm, spinning fire (electric) sticks like Super Mario Bros. 1, flying enemies which drop stuff on your head like Castlevania, weapon upgrades very similar to Contra, disappearing blocks like Megaman, a shoot em up stage like the end of Super Mario Land, peek-a-boo enemies like Batman NES ... the list goes on. The game borrows a LOT, but that's okay. Nothing offensive; everything pretty standard fare but nevertheless well made.
This would fit in with the NES library pretty well if not for the infinite continues that restart you at the beginning of every (very short stage). That's the only modern feature, and I imagine playing on the easier difficulties (which let you take more hits per life) makes this a very short experience. Regardless, if you want some light and easy fun, with well-designed levels, here's a game you can quickly play and beat in an hr or two.
(Completion notes: Beat the game with all 3 characters. My favorite was the pacifist Duck mode. The other 2 characters are a bit too similar to differentiate themselves much but it was still fine.)
Not bad, as long as you remember to turn VSYNC on lmao
This is a pretty fun game, having a Western shooter platformer is pretty fun. The music and art style is interesting. I imagine this would be fun to play on a steam deck. I don't know because I don't have a steam deck and the store page says "unknown." I have felt pretty burnt out on 2-D platformers, but this is still a fun game to play.
Achievement hunters beware: this game is one of those that requires you to do an insane amount of work for some of the achievements and are definitely outside of both my skill level and patience level.
It's short and has some difficulty. Worth the money.
This game is a short but very good 2d platformer. Feels very much like a Mega Man game with the power ups of Contra. The hand drawn graphics are very nice and the soundtrack is solid. You also get up to 3 different characters as you continue playing, the 3rd being a very interesting twist on the game that entirely changes how you play. I was able to beat the game with all 3 characters in just over 1 hour 15 mintues, but I still would recommend this game to any classic platformer fans due to its nice control, good level design, and charming art and music.
Very fun, very cheap, and pretty short western themed Megaman-esque sidescroller. Would highly recommend this. Would also highly recommend the sequel, which ups the ante in every single possible way.
