The original Gablriel Knight came out 30 years ago, and even this remake is already ten years old. So, is it still worth playing?
Absolutely, yes! Is it a bit yanky, is Gabriel Knight as insufferable as he always was, are there a couple of puzzles that require you to make connections that are as nonsensical as they were in the original? Also, yes. GK: SotF even commits the cardinal sin of having a few timed "action sequences" in which you can die.
But nothing of that matters because it has a genuinely interesting story and characters, and - most importantly - actual puzzles that - with the aforementioned exceptions - make sense but are not as obvious that you feel zero accomplishment for solving them.
Quality of Life
GK: SotF has a very well implemented hint system and you have a hotspot viewer (just press SPACE), you have a journal that chronicles your progress and lets you refresh your memory, and dialogue choices that progress the story are highlighted if you don't care for all the flavor and additional lore that is included. You have a fast travel map to quickly move from location to location, and double-clicking in a room or an exit makes Gabriel "teleport".
The other stuff
GK: SotF is definitely dated. The people move slightly robotic, the close-ups of the faces during dialogues are not very animated, and most backgrounds are very static. And the voice acting is of, let's say, varying quality. But, honestly, it all together adds a lot of charme to the game. It's like complaining about yanky special effects in a Monthy Python movie. That's not why you are here.
Conclusion
GK: SotF is a classic p&c adventure game, a faithful remake of the original, that does not let you breeze through like a lot of current titles. It is almost completely non-linear, you have a lot of items in your inventory, you can interact in different ways with your environment, you have to revisit conversations and locations when you made progress because there might be new dialogue choices, and you do need to pay attention to details. You'll get the most out of it if you give it the time it deserves.
GK: SotF probably is not for everyone. If you just want to lean back and enjoy a story, there are likely better games for you. But if you want to feel a real sense of accomplishment after solving a puzzle that made you revist every location on your map for an hour, then you should definitely play it, yank and all.
A fantastic remake of the first game in quite possibly the best Adventure game series ever made.
Just about one of the best games ever made, beautiful writing, great characters, awesome music. Many happy memories of playing the original and this updated version allows me to relive that joy.
It's been almost 30 years since I played the original and I never re-played it before, so I don't really remember it much. Even less so considering that I barely understood English at the time.
Really enjoying this remake, though. Gabriel is so different from most adventure protagonists (or from most protagonists of pretty much anything, except maybe for Johnny Bravo).
The graphics are really pretty, the voice acting is really good, the plot and puzzles seem to hold up well so far, and the quality of life is up to current day standards for the genre. I also enjoyed the notes showing comparisons from the original game and the remake that you can access at any time, plus some development commentaries, concept arts and such.
A remake of a classic Point&Click game. In retrospect I do wish I had played the original 1993 game first (/instead). I did not really fancy the remake due to ugly animations and tiny bugs. The music and the detailed surroundings however is great and creates a true mysterious primal ambience. Biggest problem for me was Gabriel himself, such a douche!

Achievements/Completionist: A few saves here and there and you'll b fine
Play this game if:
- You like classic Point&Click games
- You are ready to dive into a mysterious adventure containing a lot of unexpected events
Do Not play this game if:
- You would rather play the original than the remake. The original is prettier, better voice acting (or so I've read), less linear and without any hints to guide you
- If you don't know german but you don't want to cheat ...drei... Drachen...
Verdict: 7/10
Overall Gabriel Knight is still a good game and worth a play, the story and voice acting are still at a very high level and put to shame many modern games. Although the game is very much showing it's age, as a fan it's lovely to revisit such an iconic title.
I enjoyed this remake a lot when I permitted myself to. My first impression was tainted because I couldn't stop comparing it to the original. Many of the changes are for the better (like postponing some day 1 objectives until later). Some are not (like some superfluous new puzzles). I'm disappointed to see bugs a decade after release, including a serious one - the rada drum code has a "typo".
Overall the remake was a great excuse to replay a favourite game. I'm glad I gave it another chance and played through it.
good
I'm a big fan of the original game and I do prefer it over this remaster. Mainly for the incredible pixel art style and outstanding music and voice acting.
However this is a good remaster and brought back great memories of playing the original. Hopefully it will allow the series to reach a larger audience as it deserves to be remembered and not fall into obscurity.
Beautiful upgrade to an absolutely classic game I had the original in 94 and couldn't pass it up.
