Fun gameplay aside one of the most beautifully written stories for a video game, hits you in the soul
better never forget the sufference that comes with war
I haven't played this game in 10 years, but I remember really enjoying the story and art style. Decently sized story game for the price, took me about 11 hrs to beat. Achievements were just added to steam and due to my fond memories of the game, I feel it's worth replaying to get 100%
A good game and a better story than most. Treat it more like a book from Erich Maria Remarque than a game really.
Roughly 20% of the story were very emotional and showed how wars are cruel and tragic for the most stupid reasons. Unfortunately, the other 80% felt like filler. And even in the 20%, some of the antagonists were portrayed as "just bad people" without examining what forced or convinced them to do the things they did.
I also didn't like the "historical" parts of the game. It simply shows the player a bunch of facts and sources and doesn't really ask the player to think about them in any way, and separating this from the gameplay made the game feel like reading a Wikipedia article. It gives you very little context about what life was like before World War 1 or what caused the war. Overall, this game treats history as a collection of facts rather than a practice.
If you want a game that lets you "practice" history, the best one I know of is Disco Elysium. Different characters experience the same historical events differently, especially if they're of different nationalities, ages, or classes, and will say different things if you ask. The game involves thinking about these past events and experiences to figure out what the characters want and how you can help them in the present.

It's a really nice game, took me 8 hours to beat which is a decent amount of playtime and the developers did a lot of research into the history of WW1. Speaking of WW1 I don't even think I've played a good WW1 games before but played WW2 games in abundance since the 90's so it's nice to have this setting too just for a change.
Sidescroller game that is graphically unique, and puts the full horrors of war on full display.
Very good. Moving story, immersive game play, poignant facts about the war, surrounding the game’s narrative.
Sometimes you can run around lost… Once or twice you will encounter a bug that requires a level restart.
Overall, I liked it.
very fun puzzle game with a good aesthetic, unfortunately it doesn't show me the key binds and is full of soft locks.
Very atmosspheric, excellent story, tricky riddles and educational
Valiant Hearts is nothing short of a masterpiece. This game takes you on an emotional rollercoaster through the horrors and heartbreaks of World War I, blending heart-wrenching storytelling with beautiful hand-drawn visuals. From the very first moments, you're immersed in a world that feels both personal and universally impactful.
The narrative is deeply moving, following the lives of several characters, each with their own struggles, all intertwined with the brutal reality of war. The game does an incredible job of portraying the human side of history, highlighting the sacrifices, resilience, and enduring hope of individuals caught in a global conflict. It's rare for a game to make you feel such a deep emotional connection to its characters, and Valiant Hearts does it flawlessly.
The art style is stunning, with its vibrant yet somber colors that perfectly capture the era. The animations are fluid, and the environments are meticulously crafted, offering a sense of immersion that's hard to put into words. The game's music is equally exceptional, with a hauntingly beautiful score that complements the emotional tone of the story.
The puzzles are clever and satisfying, providing a nice break from the emotional intensity without detracting from the game's overall tone. It's not just about combat—there’s a beautiful, delicate exploration of friendship, love, loss, and the human spirit.
In conclusion, Valiant Hearts: The Great War™ is a game that everyone should experience at least once. It’s a perfect blend of history, art, and narrative that leaves a lasting impact. A beautiful, emotional tribute to the people who lived through one of the most devastating periods in history. Highly recommend it!
actually unplayable. chapter 1, ypres, there's a puzzle where you need to get this dumb ass dog to pull a lever down by pressing a button. however, the button doesn't pop up. i needed the dog to get into a hole, couldn't activate dog mode to control it. there is a boss fight where you have to fight this goober in a tank, and need to like stand on a box. BUT THE BOX DOESN'T FUCKING APPEAR. these fucking glitches make the game unplayable.
Great story, beautiful artstyle, short (positive for me) and dirt cheap. Highly recommend.
Capture the brutality and tragedy, but somehow not the loss. Vignettes rather than a concocted story arch would have been less accessible but truer to the vision.
The storyline is not my cup of tea- I am playing this for a world history course. that is not why I rated the game negatively, though. My problem is with the puzzles. The game is often very unclear with what it wants you to do, the hints are usually mere screenshots of the game with no additional direction, and there is no dialogue to help. Even the easier puzzles just come across as tedious and frustrating. The game often wants you to believe there are high stakes and immediate dangers going on, yet its hard to feel the heat when the only way to absolve said "immediate threats" are with puzzles that take 5 minutes each. It's also INCREDIBLY annoying that you cannot save when you'd like. Also, for an anti-war game that prides itself on historicality, it certainly likes to focus less on the horrors of war and more on nonsensical things like blowing a blimp away with a broken organ (while indoors?) and shutting down a cartoonish looking "mustard gas machine". It's off-putting, and the gameplay really takes away from the story in my opinion.
I've been trying to play this game for so long and it's worth it!
I absolutely loved it. It’s not just a game, it’s an emotional experience that pulled me in from the very start. The game follows the intertwined fates of four main character Emile, Karl, Freddie, and Anne each with their own motivations and struggles. I quickly became attached to them, especially with the way the game shows the impact of war on everyday people. Accompanied by their loyal dog, Walt, the characters feel incredibly real, even without traditional dialogue. The storytelling is beautifully done, with letters, diary entries, and historical artifacts making the experience even more immersive. One of the things I appreciated most about Valiant Hearts was how much I learned while playing. The game includes real letters, historical documents, and events, making it more than just an emotional journey, it’s also an educational one. I found myself stopping to read about the war, collecting historical items, and truly appreciating the depth of research that went into making the game feel authentic. It’s a beautifully crafted game that proves video games can be both entertaining and deeply moving. The ending, in particular, hit me hard, I won’t spoil it, but it was absolutely heartbreaking. If you love games with strong narratives and historical depth, this is a must-play. While it may not be for those looking for fast-paced action, for me, it was an emotional masterpiece that I’ll never forget.
Play this as soon as you can if you not experienced the treat that is this game
The best video game i've ever played, it cannot be described how good the story is. i 100% recommend this, an if you are thinking of buying it, you should!
great story, graphics, atmosphere. Good to learn about WW1 as well
I rarely review games, but this one is exceptional. Lovely graphics, a touching story, and the right amount of problem solving without pressure to keep you interested and not too stressed.
Played it on PS many years ago, still a great game.
One thing to keep in mind though. Play in windowed and fiddle with resolution settings for some levels. Otherwise it's basically game breaking.
Its a beautiful game. It made me cry so much. I appreciate a lot the fact I could learn more about this war while solving cool puzzles. Many of those where confusing but that was no issue since I loved to see all the small details in every level.
While the puzzles are underwhelming and more often tedious than engaging, and some cartoony elements can take away from the experience, the short story and WW1 setting is very engaging.
Valiant Hearts is one big tear jerker of a game. And I am kind of mad that it only took me until now to finally play it.
I've always had an interest in the 2 World Wars, both from a historic perspective and an Anti-War perspective, and Valiant Hearts, like many contemporaries of its kind, tells about the human side of the conflict and the way it affects the Soldiers on both sides, and also the Civillians affected by it.
What differs however is how this story is told in the game though.
The game uses beautiful 2D Art illustrations combined with a side-scroller puzzle gameplay to get its point across. The puzzles were fun and varied, some did make me scratch my head for a bit but the Hint system is very generous.
What matters is the story though, and I think Valiant Hearts delivers that with full force. I was invested in just about each of the character's stories and how they intertwine, Anna specifically being my favorite of the bunch, though I would have loved one of the characters that is in the game but isn't playable, to be playable, so that one could get a closer look at what life under occupation was like. Because it is told to the player through letters, but none of it is sadly actually experienced.
But all in all. This was a great romp, and the game ends at just about the right time and wraps up everything with a really neat bow on top.
Ubisoft Montpellier is the studio responsible for this gem, and just about every other notable or experimental title that has been released by Ubisoft in the last years (The Rayman series, The videogame for the Peter Jackson King Kong movie, From Dust, ZombiU and most recently, Prince of Persia - The Lost Crown).
Studio Montpellier shows that Ubisoft can be more than just a yearly slop factory for your next Assassins Creed, Far Cry, Just Dance or Watch Dogs games. It reminds me of the good old days where when you saw the Ubisoft Logo on a game, you knew you were guaranteed to play a certified banger videogame and get your money's worth, unlike today...
The only downside of this game on PC is that it is tied to the horrendous uPlay/Ubisoft Connect Launcher. However in my experience it hasn't caused any issues, it is worth to keep in mind.
I genuinely advise anyone to give this game a look, especially for the sale price of 3,74€. It costs less than a Döner Kebab nowadays!
Valiant Hearts is perhaps the BEST game Ubisoft has ever released.
And it's completely different from other Ubisoft titles.
In Valiant Hearts, we accompany various characters on their journey in the Great War.
The game offers
- PUZZLE-SOLVING
- THINKING
- SEARCHING
- STEALTH
and of course
[*] ACTION
From heroic and funny to heartbreakingly sad moments, it's all there.
The truly fantastic soundtrack, beautiful art, and outstanding animation combine to create a masterpiece that remains unparalleled in this genre.
I highly recommend this game.
This game remind us that how human more evil than a devil. what I learn from this game is don't ever lose hope!
One of the best anti-war games set on the first world war. I decided to replay it after a decade and hits even harder now. I recommend it to everyone who enjoys puzzle games and history. Lest we forget.
love the great war gotta be my favorite conflict. this game is actually a masterpiece
A short, simple sweet story telling of the less discussed side of war. This was my second time playing it,and even knowing how it ends got to me again. All I can say is,don't ever let fame/fortune get in the way of your own humanity
The game is beautiful. The story really makes you feel how people felt in the Great War and how they change. You play as several characters, which they are all related to each other as family or as new friends that randomly met. The graphics may not be so good, but the art style and narrative makes it unique. Very good game even after 11 years. The only downside is that it is an Ubisoft game, and it makes you download their terrible launcher.
Sadness. Kinda accurate. Worth a play if u like a good story.
One of the best story game I've played, I keep forgetting Ubisoft used to be a good studio years ago. A charming puzzle game showing the brutality of the first World War.
5/10
jogo muito repetitivo, apresenta pouco desafio, gameplay muito simples mas a história é bacaninha
Valiant Hearts is a game about the horrors of war.
Valiant Hearts is a game in which we can see with our own eyes the horrors of World War I, the spread of firearms, flamethrowers, gas attacks, etc.
This is a game with very simple gameplay, and nice 2D graphics, but a very sad story, about close people who were separated by war.
We can see that there are many people who enjoy it, terrible people, but also a lot of simple people who don't want to hurt anyone, those who have a family waiting for them at home.
I'm currently in a country where there is a war going on, and although the aggressor is clear, there are still simple people on both sides who just want to live.
This is the first game in a long time that made me cry at the end, so I think that says something.
So, this game is really great, and tells us what was in those days, and unfortunately is now, 10/10, peace to everyone.
touching game. except from one time when the dog got stuck - a seamless gaming experience. someone should get a slap for these quick time events.
During the First World War, unique gameplay style, touching storyline, unified characters.
Lest we forget
This game is beautiful and heart breaking. A must play for everyone.
What a masterpiece.
Most heart-wrenching game I've ever played. 100000/10
game is good but it requires ubisoft connect to play
good story - ubisoft though..
Absolutely loved it, feeling the sorrow for the characters and seeing how life was during WWI was fascinating and very sad. Valiant Hearts is definitely a must play if you're into war games. It's a tear jerker for sure. I wish to find more games like this. I was enthralled through the entire game. And Jacksepticeye played it so there's a plus! Play this game, it's worth every cent!
This game shows you there is room for love and compassion even in the darkest moments of humanity.
If it doesn't make you cry, you're not human.

This is a very cool game, and I can recommend you to try it, even if it didn't work out in 2025-2024! And if you want to feel real emotions, to empathize with the characters of this game, then welcome, you will not regret buying this game!

It just gets boring at the beginning, and I gave up on this game for half a year. Now I regret that I abandoned this game, I hate the tasks of that nurse, the rest are interesting, but poking bandages is difficult! The ending is just beautiful and touching this game deserves the best goodbye Emile
A charming little puzzle game, beautifully made in the style of French comic book.
Beautiful and sad game.. The last scene was especially hitting hard. The only thing that I didn't like are hints that sometimes were not helpful, and I needed to look at youtube walkthrough.
