Saw this game on youtube when it first came out. When I saw the ending, I cried.
When I was really young, I wanted to play this game, but I did not have device to play it on. Our family computer was so old that it just couldnt run this game no matter what I did. I finally bought this game some time ago, but because of personal things I just couldnt dive into this game. In a span of 2 days I played it from start to finish.
After experiencing this game myself, even after all these years, even after seeing the end of this game dozens of times, i still cried. I cried even more in the past, even more as an Adult than when i was just a kid. 7
The story of this game is timeless
10/10 sentimental ending, overall the game is peak
This game hits hard tbh
I never expected the story of a french-american gay couple, a german twink with his family, and a french nurse living the horrors of WW1 could be so charming.
This game is just great, i would reccomend NOT watching gameplay videos before playing, that ruined my experience, but this game shows the horroers of war, so i pretty much reccomend it. :)
I cant recommend it.
First experience is that its a bad piece of software. The integration with Ubisoft Connect (?) was not smooth, the game cant handle my screens resolution, and it seems like on Windows 10 it has a locked framerate of 24 in fullscreen mode!?!? I was wondering why everything was so excrucuatingly slow and why the audio would finish before cutscene animations did.
So then actually playing the game you can see it didnt keep my interest for long. As a game it is a nothing, its just a sequence of canned animations, zero-time pressure QTEs, and "puzzles" which make me wonder why im even there to press the buttons.
I do appreciate the apparent interest in the real history of the war, and the art is neat. But they should have just made a sequence of animated short films with browsable "facts" in between,
One of my favorite games of all time.
This game is so good, especially for relaxing
A short little game that takes around 6-10 hours to complete. Good music. Heavy subjects done in a respectable way and even quite sentimental at times. And finally, also informative. Recommend to everyone!
Absolutely no words. Remarqueable 10/10
I'll just post the lyrics of my favourite anti-war song
Von denen keiner mir zuleid was tat.
Dafür als Krüppel trag' ich Band und Orden,
Und hungernd ruf ich dann: Ich war Soldat!
Ihr Brüder all', ob Deustche, ob Franzosen,
How in ze hell Ubisoft managed to make a good game?
An absolutely beautiful game, the story is so heartwarming. Like a movie, I just love it!
Awesome story! Great historical diaries! Fun to play!
Playing for the narrative & knowledge, it got the feel on the war front.
Great game
Rating: 5/5
Narrative and Emotional Impact:
"Valiant Hearts: The Great War" isn't just a game; it's an experience that captures the essence of World War I through its poignant storytelling and heart-wrenching narrative. The game follows the intersecting lives of several characters, each with their own tale of love, loss, and survival. The blend of historical events with personal stories makes for an emotionally charged journey, one where you'll feel every victory and defeat.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is a beautiful mix of exploration, puzzle-solving, and light action, all presented in a 2D animated comic style that breathes life into the grim setting of war. Each character you control offers unique abilities, with the dog companion being a highlight - not just for gameplay mechanics but for the emotional bond he adds to the narrative. Puzzles are generally intuitive, requiring just the right balance of challenge and logic without becoming frustrating.
Visuals and Audio:
The art style is both distinctive and evocative, with backgrounds that are detailed enough to immerse you in the era while maintaining a comic book charm. The soundtrack complements the visuals perfectly, enhancing the mood with its moving melodies and fitting wartime tunes. The use of historical artifacts at the end of each chapter adds an educational layer to the experience.
Replay Value:
While the story is linear, the emotional depth and the beautifully crafted levels make this game worth revisiting. The additional historical facts and the way the game pays homage to the real-life events of WWI provide a compelling reason to explore its world again.
Critiques:
The game might feel a bit short for some, and the controls can occasionally be a tad clunky on certain platforms. Also, while the puzzles are enjoyable, they might not offer enough challenge for veteran puzzle enthusiasts.
Conclusion:
"Valiant Hearts: The Great War" stands out as a touching tribute to the soldiers of WWI, wrapped in an engaging, educational, and emotionally rich package. If you're looking for a game that combines history, narrative, and gameplay in a unique way, this is a must-play. It's a reminder of war's human cost, told through the lens of a beautifully crafted game. Highly recommended for those who appreciate story-driven games with a historical backdrop.
Fun but not too hard puzzles and gameplay. Great story telling and historical facts mixed in that keep you engaged. Heart wrenching ending. highly recommend
I know that music plays a huge factor in linear-story-games, but Valiant Hearts visual story telling is still enough to convey strong emotional tones, on a first playthrough albeit.
Any who 11/10 walking-sim, made me cry at the end, that officer deserved the fatal blow.
Played this 10 years after its release, some parts of the game like some puzzles dont hold up well but the story telling, the actual history tidbits from the war the art style all tie together to make a really good experience, they cooked the ending as well. Ubisoft Montpellier makes some really great games, they need to do more before Ubi stops existing
Score 7.8/10
The Narrative of this game is just beatiful. The puzzles are really good, they are not impossible just hard enough so you can solve them but no get tired of them. I would rate them as difficult enough for you to enjoy. I almost cried at the end. It is so good yet so sad. 10/10 game outstanding performance, excellent story and the graphics dont matter bc the game is so good in other aspects that you dont really care much about them. totally recommend.
cried & sobbed old game but still oh my god
very good
This game changed my view of war and many other things its so amazing its unspeakable i love it give it a try
nice story telling, good game by ubisoft
This is art :)
Beautiful game, love the ending. brought me to tears
remember when it was on mobile. also I cried when I finished it in 2018 and still cry today playing it.
good puzzle game
Great, story driven game. We need more games like this.
Ubisoft scammers. Downloaded again and Ubisoft Connect claimed my game was not linked to my account. After seeking support from Ubisoft with no reply, I sought a refund from Steam who also denied my request. Glad your company is dying and I hope Shadows kills it.
good ole memories
very beautiful art, good story.
Valiant Hearts: The Great War is an odd little game, an immediately unintuitive blend of cutesy artistic stylings, old-school game mechanics, and grim subject matter that don't seem like they would blend in a respectable way.
Whatever conviction possessed Mssrs. Fanise, Masseron, and Tumelaire of UbiSoft Montreal to use the UbiArt Framework -- the 2.5D vector cartoon game engine that powers Rayman -- as a means to communicate the horror of the most senseless tragedy in human history, utterly escapes me, but despite the whimsical Rayman stylings or perhaps because of them, the simply-told story about human love and loss in wartime is captivating from start to finish. Initially, the cartoon art style feels inappropriate because it's too lightweight and goofy for the subject matter, but later, when protagonist Emile is climbing mountains of corpses to gasp for air amidst the shells and the gas, the jarring simplicity of all of those little cartoon bodies lends extra weight to the loss of innocence suffered by all of our heroes.
On the mechanical side, Valiant Hearts isn't anything particularly new. A sidescrolling puzzle platformer with light adventure game elements, it touches on most of the genre staples like "throw a stick to distract a guard and then run by him" or "push a cart to climb up to a higher area." It's serviceable, but clearly just an abstraction to pad out the heavy story moments and lend "gameplay" bona fides. One little feature that I quite enjoyed was a historic glossary that pops up to provide context for different scenarios the heroes encounter -- gas attacks, zeppelins -- even if actual soldiers in the trenches weren't exactly Mario-platforming to save themselves from chlorine melting their lungs into acid.
At about 6 hours from start to finish, Valiant Hearts also doesn't overstay its welcome... both because of the relatively rudimentary gameplay, and because of the unremitting bleakness of the setting. It's a stressful play, which should be the highest compliment to the storywriters; I was white-knuckling through the final level, and happy to see the credits roll.
An excellent pick-up for fans of old-school puzzle and platforming gameplay, history buffs, tragedy hounds, and everyone in between.
good sad game
Beatiful game
EPIC GAME
loved it
great
I really appreciate the history content of this game, a sneaky way to actually push the major milestones of WW1 and particularly the conflict in France.
The story and puzzles are OK, puzzles are on the lighter side, nothing challenging.
A charming game with a great art style.I do think that some sections get annyoing with more actiony focus and some have glaring padding at times but all in all its a great time
I like it
I cannot recommend this game enough, I'm always telling my friends about it. If you love history and WW1 like I do then please please play this game, you learn so much from playing and also by collecting the collectables in each level. Just be prepared to cry at the end
Intriguing, heart tugging, educational, thought provoking, great puzzles.
Great game. Ending makes me cry
A game with an interesting story that captures the horror of World War I (or rather the Great War as it was called at that time). You really hope for a happy ending for the characters you play, but is it possible during a war?
one of the few games that manages to successfully portray anti-war message. i was initially skeptical of the game's supposed depiction of war, seeing its cartoonish art style, near lack of any proper dialogue, or its wacky elements like giant gas tanks underneath battlefields, or taking down an airship by throwing a ton of grenades at it. regardless, it manages to depict the great war in a war that feels respectful, realistic, and delivers a heartbreaking message about the reality of war, especially in the modern-age where we're so disconnected to warfare beyond its stylized and romanticized depictions in media. the only criticism i have of the game is it should've been given an extra hour or so to iron out a few things in the game, but besides that, this game is near perfect in what it tries to accomplish.
gooooooooood
I enjoyed this game. It is part documentary, part novel, part puzzle solving game. The story is pretty good even if it is a little cheesy in parts. Even though the games characters' journey is fiction, it does give you a reasonable accurate depiction of the horrors of World War 1. If you are looking for a good casual game that is also a little educational, I would recommend it. It is not for everyone. It is about a war, so it does contain some material that might disturb younger gamers.
First World War: best place for a wholesome story.
