I love this game. I have had no problems with the digital steam version including local network multiplayer and co-cop.
I think the atmosphere of the game is great, the soundtrack, sky designs, and unit barks are iconic and kind of relaxing. I think the voice acting is excellent and several characters are played by Jennifer Hale of Mass Effect fame.
Every unit has 2 modes and placement of units has mechanical advantages. I think lovers of micro will enjoy this game the most, since there is no base-building just some light upgrade mechanics for your dropship. The entire focus of the game is on controlling units to take victory locations and landing zones. It is somewhat similar to Dawn of War 2 but with much bigger maps, no rpg style hero units, and spawn sites (landing zones) that are easier to capture or to lose. I just replayed the NSA campaign on the steam version and still love it.
Some notes:
Only two factions are playable, you can't play as the Terran empire (orange) in skirmish and they don't have a campaign. There might be a mod but they can't be played in the base game.
Scrolling in and out of the map is a little slow, this might be fixable but I have not found a setting that changes it yet. This is too bad because the game is really beautiful up close. You can however save replays and go back to zoom in for screenshots or just to enjoy.
the graphics are old, but in my opinion the art style is kind of timeless.
I got it on sale but I think it is well worth the full 5 dollar cost. It is a great RTS experience that holds up.
6/10
It's a well made game, I enjoyed it.
20th anniversary review.
How to play GC2 in 2024/2025+?
I highly recommend using REVERSAL MOD that can be downloaded on MOD:DB. Not only it balances the game, enhances the UI and visuals so they still hold up today, adds skirmish/multiplayer missions along with a small custom campaign (download the additional files), but mainly — it allows you to finally PLAY the third (and in my humble opinion) the coolest faction: THE TERRAN EMPIRE (both in skirmish and especially in the campaign). Nothing beats winning the game on the hardest difficulty with your mighty army consisting of striders with badass gatling guns and huge rocket launchers accompanied by the heaviest hoverdyne tanks with quite original and menacing design.
GC2 is one of my all time favourites and my opinion might be a little biased. I bought it both physically back in early 2000s when I was a kid and digitally here on Steam. I suggest anyone who is a fan of RTS/sci-fi genre to at least try this game out and I will gladly explain why.
It is a 20 years old game and I dare to say that it looks better than you or me after the 2 decades.
The game runs smoothly even on a modern hardware. Camera control works perfectly. Skyboxes are outstanding (you can check some of my screenshots from this game — gorgeous), unit textures are still decent with attention to little details and some effects are especially impressive for that time.
The gameplay is focused on action in the first place since there are no base building or ore harvesting mechanics.
You gain currency for capturing and holding strategic positions on the map and thus you are motivated to always advance. Each unit is unique and has a specific role along with its secondary mode that adds another layer of strategic depth. All 3 factions are fun to play — Terrans having presumably the strongest roster since you are not supposed to play them without the RM, Virons work with an original biomechanical gimmick — being able to combine 2 units of the same type into completely new one while NSA roster is focused on decent tanks and versatile infantry but their light vehicles are somewhat worthless. The AI is unfortunately kinda lackluster but might in some instances catch you off guard and the outdated pathfinding typical for the games of this era could be a little bit better.
The multiplayer Massgate service was shut down long ago but you can still play local/via third party software such as Hamachi or Gameranger.
The main SP intro is action packed and introduces us to the not so rich (compared to e.g. Starcraft) yet intriguing universe.
There are big stakes associated with the survival of the Northern Star Alliance, a splinter faction that was isolated from the Terran Empire for a long time and now has to find a way to survive the massive onslaught against its very own existence. You are not required to play GC1 in order to enjoy the story (I did not), although I recommend at least reading the short backstory in the Manual (search GC2 in your steam library, on the right side is the Manual under “additional content”).
The ending is a true “endgame” with the highest stakes. It does not end with a cliffhanger per se but it WILL hit you in the feels, you will want to play GC3 right away but unfortunately that will never happen.
The closest thing that you can play is the first game which takes places few hundred years before CGII or you can try World in Conflict by the same authors focusing on the modern Cold War setting. Sadly the contemporary Massive Entertainment works for Ubi on games like Frontiers of Pandora and SW: Outlaws and I would trade any of these for even a playable demo of GC III.
To sum it up — this is a hidden gem in the RTS sci-fi genre, a reminder of the better days and you should give it a try.

You control even more ground in this one
I am a OG fan, played it when it first came out. Was a good game, had state of the art RTG gameplay back then but it is showing it age. Commanding units is a pain, 50% of the time they won't move or you have to baby them. I got it on a cheap STEAM deal and I would say it is worth it.
this game is a lot of fun just like the first one glade to own 2 of my childhood games
do it!
My wife said if this review gets 50 likes or 5 awards, she will buy a case of beer, guys help me out
As far as strategy games go, this one is relatively simple to get into which I definitely appreciate, though that's at its expense in certain ways.
The maps are pretty simple and the objectives are straightforward to the point that I had fun trying out similar strategies to beat them before mixing things up a bit later, especially when playing with a friend.
But things like certain AI units (like snipers) not doing things as simple as defending themselves when caught in enemy fire and annoying things like a single enemy unit running off to some far side of the map to capture a point you happened to leave alone for 2 minutes show a bit of a lack of polish with its design. I also heard this game has less content than the previous instalment (which as of writing this I've yet to play yet).
7/10 - Fun to play, but not for as long as other RTS games.
Great game shame it never got a sequel. It does have a few issues but i doubt we will get a patch for modern systems unless GOG or Nightdive work out a deal with the rights owner.
Thankfully it runs fine for me so it is hit and miss who it will run for but for this price its worth trying to find out.
I would highly recommend the GC2 Reversal Mod that lets you play has the Terran Empire.
