"This game is undoubtedly one of the best games of all time. There's not much to say—its quality speaks for itself. Many games these days are released riddled with bugs and require constant patches and updates to fix them. However, I can say that this game was released almost flawlessly, close to perfection. I love zombie games, but this one is unforgettable to me. It has gone down in history as a legendary game that remains at the top.

- dragging out a bit in the second half, especially in the latter half of the Castle
- can crash upon talking to the Merchant, so save beforehand (probably not a common issue, but can happen; mostly in the Village section though)
- Leon is so thicc, he starts to generate his own gravitational field (he is painfully slow, but you really only feel it when you’re trying to flee a hoard, which is… a lot);
- the Krauser fight is pretty stupid
- Luis and Ashley are barely characters (they work as intended, but the Remake did them better, imo)
- it’s a pain in the ass to google stuff because you’re always gonna find RE4R info instead
+/- tank controls (not as terrifying as they seem, you get used to it fairly quickly; quick turn is your best friend)
+/- can’t move while aiming, shooting or reloading (the enemies are slower, but the fear as you’re jamming shotgun shells into the barrel while maintaining eye contact with 3 deranged psychopaths is real)
+/- way fewer Steam achievements than I’d like, but the game is quite old, so I should be grateful for getting any at all tbh

one of the better gamer in the series. not the best port but i still recommend you buy it. the quick time events are messed up so i'd recommend you download the mod "fixes and tweaks" to make the experience better.
This game is a classic and everyone should pick it up when it is on sale cheap. This is my 1st time playing through it on pc but i have beaten it on platstation several times. The game is also incredible looking with the re4hd mod.

one of the best game ever made. i used to play the old ubisoft port the one you have to play only with keyboard so it still confusing for me to play this with mouse and keyboard but overall this is a good remaster. and its a good thing to see that president equipped his daughter with ballistics
Absolutely amazing game, not stellar pc port. This official port has many emulation bugs, most importantly how some QTEs are tied to frame rate, meaning that if you're unlucky you can just be halted from progressing just because you want to play the game at 60fps. The bugs can't stop the game from being a masterpiece however.
there's nothing i could say about this game that hasn't already been said. just play it. this game is the pinnacle of survival horror and has aged so well

probably the most influential videogame of my life, strong emotions going on here, and it aged pretty well. I'd still recommend this to anyone who like's resident evil or action games in general.
one of my favourite games of all time, played on the PS2, played on the wii (best version ever in my opinion, too bad we can't get a HD port on the nintendo switch, that would be tits!) and the also excelent PC hd port with the HD project mod, some slowdowns, maybe because my laptop isn't powerfull enough but it's still pretty decent and the HD project textures really bring the game alive

It was beautiful. Gameplay, story and graphics aren't bad at all (ofc, for being a 2005 game).
From start to finish, this one keeps you guessing. One boss fight, you're facing a big and slow enemy that gives you plenty of time to react, and the next one it's the opposite, a quick enemy that is hard to see. It keeps you on your toes. The puzzles are difficult at first, but once you figure them out, you can breeze through them. The only complaint I have is that I have to keep verifying the integrity of the game files. Failure to do so will cause the game to break. For example, one time the sound cut out altogether, and the next time I got soft locked out of progressing through a level. I have no idea if anyone else has had this issue. As for the game itself, yes. I love it and am currently enjoying my third playthrough.

Very happy to have finally gotten around to beating this classic after having it on the backlog for years.
While the story and dialogue are ridiculous - they work in a cheesy B-movie way, but aren't to be taken seriously - the gameplay is still rock solid having set the benchmark in 2005 that many 3rd-person action games like Dead Space and Dead Rising chose to emulate. Gunplay is very fun, as is upgrading your weapons and strangely managing your inventory. Quicktime Events during cutscenes got tiring quick, although the QTE "execution" attacks work well in combat providing a satisfying reason to target different parts of enemies.
Overall it's a lot of fun, and clocking in at 16+ hours there's a lot of it for a game of its type. I would highly recommend seeking out the HD project mod for a much better visual experience than is provided by the base game.

Memories and memories.. Such a masterpiece done by Capcom. I believe no other Resident Evil can replace this one, including the Remake! Bad ass characters, gory visuals and amazing voice acting. Totally recommended. Give it a shot if you got time and play this before the RE4 Remake, then you will understand. This game's a solid 100/10.
This game brought me back to when I remember my brother and I used to play. This is also the first Resident Evil game that got me into the franchise. The story line, it's characters, the pacing, no matter how many years have passed it still holds it's reputation and it's been well loved by fans for years. It's an honor to have the opportunity to be able to play such a masterpiece of a game.

Personally I haven't played this game when it came out, I wasn't even born yet when it did, but I can see why people love it. I had a great time playing this game, the most interesting areas for me were the village and the regenerators. The soundtrack feels very nostalgic and memorable even though it's not my childhood game. Serenity is probably the best track in this game. Overall I still recommend playing this game in 2025 and after that RE4 Remake.
After finishing the Remake and loving it...this 2005 masterpiece is just unbelievably great in it's impact on the gaming spectrum...about controls - you just nee 30 min to 1 hr to master it...then its extremely fluid...great game :)

Great game. Played with a PS4 controller and worked perfectly (other than the prompts are for an xbox controller). Better than the remake in some ways, worse in others. Only thing I don't like about it is that there are a few difficulty spikes at times throughout the game and a couple of the puzzles are so ridiculous I had to read up a guide on how to do them. Otherwise a really good game.
Old is gold. This game came out 19 years ago ( at time of writing) but god it hold up incredibly well. The controls are a little clunky and visually it's dated but the game play is tense, tight, and a ton of fun. It's more action than horror but it'll still have you on edge as you explore.
If you've never played this def pick it up. You won't regret it

This is by far the best Resident Evil game. Everything about it was perfect. The setting, the storyline, the gameplay, the weapons, the array of enemies, the pacing. Original RE4 was so ahead of its time. It's amazing how well it holds up to this day.

With the re4 tweaks mod from Nexus Mods, this is the absolute best way to play the original RE4. So much fun, and totally playable in 2024.
I don't think this masterpiece of the gaming world needs a review from me. Almost everyone who asks about my favorite games, this one is definitely on that small list. In my opinion, Capcom has truly nailed it with this timeless piece of art! It's the most unique experience you can have from a classic horror game with an amazing story. I've completed this game on PS2, Xbox 360, PS4, and now here, and I feel like my body needs to finish it at least once a year! The atmosphere is incredible, and the variety of enemies that impact your playstyle at each stage is just perfect.
The best creation in the RE franchise. As a game released in 2005, it's a masterpiece, and you can truly feel the artistic craftsmanship of the Asian developers.
Played this for the first time recently. I've already played and beaten Round 2.
This game was so fun to play through. Favorite RE so far, and I haven't even played the remake yet. I should play Seperate Ways first.
The enemies and bosses have great patterns and are designed so well, and the inventory management has way more strategy and involvement than other RE games. Especially RE2R and RE3R, where you could upgrade your inventory space a lot, but everything still only takes one or two slots. This game is so fun and I might play Round 3 later now that I have the Infinite Launcher for a full new playthrough.
Haven't played the remake, but if it's anything like this, it's probably worth a shot.
Amazing game! Best in the series in my personal opinion
It's gonna be difficult to review this game as what can be said about it at this point?
I have probably run through this game well over 100 maybe even 200 times across all its various ports. From the Gamecube to the Ultra HD Steam version, I've seen a lot of RE4. Don't let that 300 hour number fool ya - I've probably got well over 1000 maybe more on this game combined with all its versions.
I think what makes this game hold up so well is the fact that it is so simple. It's not too hard for newcomers (especially if you have played a third person shooter before), and it's not too easy for genre vets as the dynamic difficulty can deliver surprises. The mechanics are easy to use. It's primarily just moving and shooting. Get to one area, clear it out, get to the next area.
Unlike previous Resident Evil games where enemies were to be avoided, here in RE4, the enemies are the puzzles. Dispatching them and getting from point A to B is the puzzle. How do you do it efficiently/correctly/consistently? And how can you improve it? What weapons should you use? How should you upgrade them?
As it turns out, the answer to all those questions is... whatever works for you. This is greatly benefited by the satisfying gun-play. The guns in this game have a certain charm to them that makes each of them unique to use. It's not like in previous RE games where you would find the shotgun and pretty much barely use the handgun anymore. Here, every weapon can be useful in any scenario.
I would absolutely love if Capcom gave this game the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster treatment. Add some QoL to the gameplay (moving while shooting, switching weapons via the D-pad, and cut out some of the fat: Dos Gigante fight, Novistador enemies, and the entire island).
The 2023 remake greatly disappointed me with its shift in gameplay to utilize the knife more. I absolutely hated that. Why remake a game that is all about the guns and make the knife the big thing? What were they thinking turning the combat into a QTE fest of parrying? Ugh. Just awful.
But that's the risk you run when remaking something that was already good - there isn't much to change other than maybe some superficial details here or there. If the Remake focused on gunplay (and actually had consistent aiming, i-frames, proper wait/follow-me commands for Ashley - y'know, all the good stuff this game had), I would have enjoyed it way more.
Ever since the remake's release, I have found a new love for this game that wasn't there before. I have grown to appreciate its design way more mechanically and understand why it works so well and has held up over the years. And if it's not the gunplay that serves it well, it's the added benefit of its comical performances.
Paul Mercier's portrayal of Leon Kennedy simply is too good. It's almost like he knows he's the protagonist of a video game. Nothing gets in his way and he exudes confidence. It's shocking to me that Capcom thought that the Remake needed new dialogue and new actors - they really could have re-used the audio from this game and it would have worked far better.
The story is of course nonsensical - a roller-coaster of attractions and events that really could only happen in a video game - but that's part of the fun. It doesn't take itself seriously, and none of the characters try to make it serious. Trying to bring seriousness into it (like the Remake did) takes away the charm.
The best way to pay homage to Resident Evil 4 isn't to remake it. It doesn't need one. Yes, there is some age to it (tank controls, graphics, etc.), but that's superficial. Like I said, a Deluxe Remaster would serve this game's legacy far better than whatever Capcom did with that Remake.
I wholeheartedly recommend this game to anyone who wants a fun roller-coaster to playthrough. I definitely recommend it over the misguided remake. And if tank controls scare you, try control Type II - it's not a total fix, but it makes the control scheme more modern. I also recommend installing the HD Project as it not only greatly improves the textures for the game, but also adds re4tweaks - a sort of limited game modifier that can tweak certain aspects of the gameplay (debug menu, skip the intro, fixed camera in Ashley's segment, auto-complete QTEs).
If you have already played through this game multiple times as I have, and just need a reason to go through it again, well, how many ways have you tried to challenge yourself playing it? No yellow herbs? No weapons upgrades? Knife only? Pistol only? No reloading? No merchant? See... that's one of the the best aspects to this game that the remake also fails at - it's actually fun in this game to limit yourself. The gameplay is just so tailored to any experience you want and it's consistent enough for you to know how to react.
I cannot express my love for this game enough. Pick it up, play it, have some fun.

i've put probaably arond 1k hors on all the platforms combined with this game and i can say this is the best resident evil experince you'll ever get even after playing re4r on the xbox earlier this year i still prefer this game. like genuinely one of the few games i'd call perfect in a non joking manner.
Even if you've played the remake I still highly recommend this game. It's a fan favorite for a reason. 9/10
the first game where pro difficulty is for professionals
As a veteran of RE4, I must say that I'm shocked to discover that I actually prefer the remake to the original. The remake simply has more reason to explore and find items, has better level design, a better story, and much more modern controls. However, the original RE4 has slightly slower gameplay and values taking refuge in certain choke points whilst you shoot all of the enemies rushing towards you; a different but more realistic gameplay approach. The game also has that traditional old game charm (can't believe games like this are considered "retro" now) where the color pallet is colorful, but still dark enough to maintain the tone at the same time. The game doesn't take itself serious, but it's also not necessarily a comedy either (though the writing can be so corny that it's funny sometimes). There's just something about the vibes of games from this generation of gaming that are so novel and cool, I can't quite describe it.
Of course, this game originally came out on the gamecube so the controls are very much something to get used to if you're playing on controller; which is most definitely the definitive way to play this game since the game is designed solely with controller in mind. This game's tank controls help give you a sense of panic, but it still gives you enough time to react since the enemies move slower as a result. It's quite an unconventional and unique combination that actually works out in the game's favor.
This game is where the resident evil series started to turn more into an action series rather than a survival horror series so if you've never played any version of RE4, keep that in mind. It's more of a action game with horror elements rather than a horror game with action.
The separate ways dlc comes with this game and I gotta say, separate ways for the RE4 remake is definitely better. Much of the content from the separate ways dlc in the remake is present in the main campaign INSTEAD so it's not all doom and gloom.
The original RE4 definitely takes significant inspiration from action movies that came out around the time of the games release such as the matrix and even older blockbusters such as the type that arnold schwarzenegger or sylvester stallone would star in. It has cheesy one liners, mini guns, and explosions, yet it somehow also maintains a "survive in the woods" aesthetic similar to the first evil dead. You can tell that they just threw random ideas at the wall and kept whatever seemed fun. That doesn't mean the game is bad, quite the contrary actually.
Some parts of the original are easier than the remake and some parts are harder. This game also has a dynamic difficulty feature that adjusts difficulty in real time based off how well you're doing in game and I'm not sure if the remake has that feature or not but I'm pretty sure I remember hearing that it wasn't in the remake. It helps balance the game and you don't even notice that the game is changing difficulty when you play either.
So the big question remains: Is the original RE4 worth it in 2024? Does it hold up?
It holds up for the most part in that its still a very fun game but the remake is probably more worth it if you're more used to playing games that came out in the last 10 years, hate tank controls with a burning passion, or if you can't stand gamecube era graphics. just keep in mind that you can't move while aiming in this game, the camera movement is EXTREMELY limiting, and you aim with the left stick on controller instead of the right stick. Considering that this game was so popular that it essentially INVENTED the third person shooter genre, I'd say it gets a pass though. I mean hey, on the bright side there's no weapon bloom because this game had the cool stylistic choice to make it so that you aim with every weapons laser sight instead of using a dorky crosshair that's stuck to the center of the screen when you decide to aim. It's a very cool and immersive way to make your character aim a gun in a video game and I don't think we give this game enough praise for that.
Buy this game if you have nostalgia for the original, have nostalgia for this generation of games, want a more campy and OG RE experience, like action games, or zombie games. If you want a scary resident evil experience, buy resident evil 1 or 2 instead.
BEFORE YOU BUY HOWEVER, READ THIS: There is a bug in the mine cart level during the QTE after you jump off the mine cart and have to spam a button to pull yourself up. The QTE requires DOUBLE the button presses in order to be successful. It really sucks and the only way to fix it is to temporarily put your game at 30fps in the game's main menu. It's not the end of the world but it certainly is an inconvenience.
P.S. Ashley in this game isn't nearly as annoying as you fuckass nibbas say she is and I actually think she's just as cute, if not cuter in this game than in the remake
Personally, I think the original is more atmospheric than the remake and more challenging. One downside is that the PC version has bugs. In the minecart mission at the end, where you have to spam the X button, I even used an auto-clicker, and it still couldn't handle it. It seems there's a fix for that. The controls seem complicated at first, but you get used to them.
My personal rating is 10/10. I recommend everyone try it, even those who have played the remake.
