Risk of Rain 2 is a 3D action multiplayer rogue-lite that brings you back to the mysterious crash site of the Contact Light. No run will ever be the same with randomized stages, monsters, bosses, items, and more. Play solo or team up with friends online to fight your way through hordes of monsters and find a way to escape the planet.
About the Game
Risk of Rain is an action platformer with roguelike elements. With permanent death as a primary feature, players will have to play their best to get as far as possible. Fight on a mysterious planet with randomly spawning enemies and bosses, either alone or with 3 friends in online co-op. With over 100 items at your disposal, you will find the tools you need to find the teleporter back home. Discover a myriad of randomly chosen stages, from the desolate forest to the frozen tundra.The three main goals for our game are simple:
1. Design a game that is randomly generated every play-through, to keep replayability high and fresh.
2. Time = difficulty. The higher the in-game time gets, the harder the difficulty gets. Keeping a sense of urgency keeps the game exciting!
3. Be enjoyable, regardless of whether you win or lose. No more fussing with complex and non-intuitive gameplay patterns. Players should not blame the game for their loss!

Very cool, very challenging!
i tried to play with my friend and it's too complicated
the game is cool and kinda hard at the beginning, as an old game it has some problems but nothing that gonna messed up your gameplay, although if you are new at risk of rain and want one to start i think you should try the second one, not because its better just because its more receptive and it's easier to get by
and sniper/railgunner is the goat
not much to it but pretty fun
It's a good solid 7/10. Great chunk of content to explore, really good soundtrack, lots of replayibility. However, I will say unless you don't have 15$ to spare, buy the games remake Risk of Rain Returns instead. This game has a ton of bugs and multiplayer is an absolute pain in the ass to set up. I'd recommend buying when it's on sale for 2$ or if you just can't buy the much more polished remake.

Tried really hard to like this game because it had so much hype, but at list with single player it is a snoozefest with too much difficulty scaling to enjoy the more interesting parts.

i was looking for cheap, replayable, single player games when i saw someone play this on a yt video. i was interested and bought the game, and its very fun. its also very chalenging and time consumeing.

I love becoming so powerful I crash the game by existing.
i really like the simplistic style, i actually prefer it to risk of rain returns. amazing game great replayability, and amazing lore. the soundtrack is great. the system of unlocking new characters, items, and lore as you play more and more keeps you coming back. despite the limited number of stages they never feel repetitive. the game does a great job of making you feel like a lone survivor, terrified and confused by the new world you are trapped in.

I'm glad the sequel grew out of this, this is like my third time buying the game and every time I just feel zero dopamine shooting out. 3/10

Still really fun. Only now in 2024 did I unlock all the characters for the first time and there are so many cool ideas there... but yeah this game is hard and everything is time-sensitive.
If you have too much anxiety dealing with timebased challenges, maybe just play it on easy difficulty i guess.
Also try playing it with a controller.
Directly from the indie golden years, the original got great replayability, not so steep learning curve (even with kinda stiff controls), special worldbuilding and athmosferic soundtrack; are we the baddies?. Solid 5/7, worth revisiting previous levels (+2 because it doesn't really rain).

second best game i ever played

After Hopoo Games recent closure, is a delight to dive into their old catalog and see how, even at their most amateurish. were able to create and develop such a fun and charming expirience. it is amazing that the same people that made this small, quirky, kinda ugly looking roguelike would later give us one of the the greatest games of all time.
Fly high, Hopoo Games. and i wish Paul and Duncan the best at VALVe.
I didnt have to buy it again to buy it
It's like eating a bowl of broken glass shards - but you get called bad and told to "git gud" when you say you're not really enjoying the experience and would rather try something else.
OST kicks ass though.
Simple art yet oh so gorgeous, outstanding soundtrack, easy modding and documentation. This is Risk of Rain to me. Shoutouts to Starstorm, making the best get better. The one negative is the lack of an easy to use multiplayer (you remember hamachi? It's back, in rain form!)
Good game, but if you want to play it i'd recommend getting Risk of Rain Returns instead, as it has better controls, more content, redone art and music, and a new gamemode.
However, if you love Risk of Rain Returns and want more, consider getting this for the mods that it has. Specifically Starstorm.
i played both the sequel and the remake to this game before playing the og and my god does it hold up. I adore this game, despite being less detailed than anything else later, there just something about the game that makes it so fun, as well as it having the cutest version of acrid the franchise has seen. I've beat the game twice and have unlocked every character except mercenary. Its worth the 10 bucks it costs. My one nitpick is that you have to kill every enemy on a stage before progressing, but you immediately get over that once you realize that you can just have the teleporter running while looting the stage. amazing game.
This 'Not Recommended' is not a reflection of the quality of this game whatsoever.
It's a great game that started a great series. However, with the release of Risk of Rain Returns you might as well just play that. It is a remaster of this game with some additional polish and features, but not different enough to make it worth buying both, so you may as well buy the more developed version instead.

2/10 I think I had thought I was getting the 2nd game. This one is brutal and made me sad.
Risk of Rain is a good roguelike with it's flaws , still worth the buy in 2024 even with Risk of Rain Returns available for reasons I will tell further
Positives
*The roster is very varied , each characters feels different , from Commando with it's long range and mobility to loader with their grapple and hard-punching exoskeleton or sniper and their reload mechanic and devastating steady aim
*The music composed by Chris Christodoulou , just like the music of Risk of Rain 2 is amazing and a huge part of what makes the game or even the franchise , what it is
*Items and how they stack with themselves or interract with others make the game and end-game really fun from stacking crowbars to deal massive damage to healthy ennemies or bitter roots to become a pack of health or the two at the same time combined with a lot of items
*End-game looping can go crazy
*Very affordable game , a steal on sale as it goes 80 percent off
*Very light game , in storage or in memory usage , it can run on most computers
*coop is fun and chaotic , just like Risk of Rain 2
*Artifacts ,unlockable by finding them in the different levels and toggable before starting a run modify the game in fun or painful ways depending on the artifact
*item and survivor logs make the game feel more alive
*The lack of map really makes you feel like you are stranded as in your first runs you will probably wander and learn the map layouts progressively , this
Negatives
*The keyboard controls could be a negative for some as mouse controls arent available (but are in Risk of Rain Returns)
*The graphics aged a bit from it's release (but they were remade in Risk of Rain Returns)
*Almost no meta-progression appart from unlocking characters or items and artifiacts but this could also be a positive as well (Risk of Rain Returns adds challenges)
Risk of Rain is a good roguelike but if you want a better vanilla Risk of Rain experience you should buy Risk of Rain Returns since it solves most of the negatives listed above while adding new content for risk of rain 2 and Risk of Rain 1 players alike.
So why should you buy this game in 2024 ?
For it's mods:
Risk of Rain got it's dedicated modding community too just like Risk of Rain 2 albeit smaller and less known
The most well known mod for this is Starstorm , a huge expansion mod giving a breath of fresh air to the game ,not like a complete overhaul , more like an expansion that feels like it could be part of the base game
Doubling the number of survivors if we do not count brand new survivor variants similar in concept to alt skills albeit more polished some feeling like brand new characters like the Nemeses or Vestiges twisted versions of the survivors changing their playstyle and design , introducing brand new stages , handful of new and originally unused ennemies ,rulesets to spice up runs even more and three new final bosses to fight.
Want light effects and background change ? Lively World.
The ability to save mid-run ? SaveMod
Want some graphics to be more in-line with Risk of Rain Returns ? Returnify
These are just a part of the mods available for this game .To discover these new takes on Risk of Rain and to not make their work go unnoticed you should buy Risk of Rain in 2024

Incredible depth and a high skill ceiling, but still an absolute blast on the easiest difficulty with Commando, the game's only automatically unlocked character.
Great game one of the best of all time play it over risk of rain returns
game got single handedly carried by the OST. other than that it's awful and feels primitive even for the timeframe it came out on
