Описание

Hack ‘n’ Slash is a puzzle action game about hacking -- reprogram object properties, hijack global variables, hack creature behavior, and even rewrite the game’s code. The only way to win is not to play...by the rules!

The wizard has mandated that everyone confine themselves to the village, the castle armory has started to forge weapons so powerful that no one but guards are allowed to carry them, and anyone who attempts to find a sprite and demonstrate their bravery would face certain death. The new laws are for your own protection, but you don’t buy it. You’ll show everyone what “brave” means and, if you’re clever, maybe uncover the secret reasons why everything’s gone sideways.

Key Features:

  • Use in-game tools to hack the game while you’re playing it
Your sword can hack the variables of objects. You find magic artifacts that allow you to tune global variables to your liking. Discover equipment that lets you see the game’s internal debug visualization to uncover things that weren’t meant to be seen.
  • Hack the code
As you achieve advanced hacking mastery, you’ll be able to dive directly into the game’s assembly in the form of procedurally generated dungeons and modify the live-running code.
  • Make the game yours
Puzzles have myriad solutions, many of which we haven’t anticipated. As you master the game’s hacking mechanics, you can mold and shape the game in whatever way you desire.
  • Crash it!
You’re hacking the game for real! You can totally break it. Roll back in time to change the rules so the bugs don’t cause the world to fall apart, whether they’re yours or ours!

This is a great game.

Possibly niche if you're not interested in programming.
If you're interested in understanding how games work or how to break them, it's a great introduction though.

Recommended if you have any sort of coding background. Not sure if it would be enjoyable by non IT folk.

A great puzzel game, though some puzzels get hard and you end up working with the in game code quite a bit.
I recommend it for anyone who likes puzzel games like legend of Zelda

Quoting another review here:

> Additionally, there were too many ways to get past things without doing it right, making it possible for you to actually get stuck in the game.

Ah yes, I remember when I softlocked myself in the game and tried to fix the problem that put me in a forced infinite recursion loop. I really didn't know what to do for like 20 solid minutes until I realized that this game literally has a wayback machine built in; savegames are tree-like in that you can always go back to an earlier point and diverge from there, even allowing you to load a different branch if I'm not mistaken, so while you could soft-lock yourself in a single puzzle, you could just go back one room and try a different way. You could go back infinitely far and have a single savegame with several story branches.
Please note that this is me talking about a game I last touched like a decade ago, so this information may be wildly inaccurate.

I remember the actual story being a bit on the short side, there not being enough puzzles (which could either mean the game was very good, or very bad, but I'm pretty sure I enjoyed it very much), but I also remember being able to side-step half the puzzles when really all you were thinking was "wait, can I actually.…". This is a good thing; the game encourages you to be creative, to break the rules, to mess around.
This is literally a graphical version of giving a 12 year old a computer, a copy of The C Programming Language, and a running Linux system.
I'm 90% sure there are two kinds of players of this game, one of them constantly complains that this game doesn't force them to obey rules and puzzle solving isn't linear enough, and the other feels as if they were a god-like being with powers beyond comprehension because they can write a loop that does something relatively simple but the loop is something they have made themselves so it's the best thing in the world to see it work.

I give this game a 10/10 just because it exists, bugs and everything (again, it's too long for me to even remember whether or not it crashed, I don't think it did tho).
It's Linux native to boot (or it used to be.… this game is from before the Steam runtime IIRC so what counts is that it once did work natively), and it's priced just right IMHO (YMMV).

The problem with giving a proper review that tells you about the game in a way that helps you figure out whether or not you wanna buy it is that it's a hit or miss; regardless of wheter you can write code, regardless of whether you know what a Hello World is, regardless of whether you have touched a computer in the past 50 years, you will either like or dislike it and no amount of pondering will help me give you a baseline metric by which you can guesstimate in which group you end up.

Be a professional coder and hate the game. Be a carpenter and love it. Be a farmer and hate it. Be a sysadmin and love it. Whether or not you like coding has little to do with this game as far as I can tell it.
Just go and buy it, you can blame me if you don't like it.

Great idea, but this game is let down by game-breaking bugs and tedious gameplay.

This game is an interesting concept poorly executed. The idea of an old-school Zelda like where you can modify the code of anything is cool. Except you never actually modify the code, you instead change the values of a limited number of variables. That in itself is fine, except 2/3 of the way through the game they suddenly switch from giving you a list of variables to modify to giving you a lightly redacted (why in the world is 1 in every 10 lines of the code you're not allowed to edit removed?) version of the full code in an obscure language (it's not hard to read, just obscure). Also, there are no significant tutorials. So what this means is to play this game:

A) You must already know how to code. If you don't then don't even bother installing this game.
B) You won't get to use your coding knowledge.
C) You can only solve problems the exact ways the dev intended.
D) If you don't solve it the exact way the dev intended the game hard crashes. I tried to clean the lake for the 2nd time (because they heavily imply you should), but doing this just breaks your game.
E) All the jokes are 3/5 and even then require you to already understand coding. There was literally only 1 joke in the entire game I thought was funny, and it barely got a chuckle out of me.

If this game wasn't so short I would say it was a waste of time. Maybe buy it heavily on sale if you already know how to code, but even then I don't suggest it.
