I've tried several times to get into this game over the many years I've had it, but it always fails to click for me.

The movement feels sluggish, only worsened in areas slightly too big that have no clear design language for the flow so, its just aimless wandering hoping you get lucky and hit an area with the tools you have. The song system might be innovative (is it though plenty of pre-2005 games had skill wheels of one form or another) its far from intuitive, and even the auto aim I swear does nothing. Crafting doesn't support the game play either its just a kitchen sink feature tossed in.

The sea life is varied but that variety also lacks design language to say what hurts and what doesn't, some "jelly fish" like creature swim by peacefully others hurt you for sometimes surprising amounts which with the floaty movement and clunky combat, doesn't feel good.

To sum it up, for a game about water, what it really lacks is flow, in design, in progression in movement, in combat, in everything. And even the often praised part, the art I have to say, while is no way bad, feels mismatched with the narrative being attempted.

This should have spent a little longer in the oven, having the devs step back and look at all those parts they wanted and re-worked how to plate them up.

I can't see myself giving this another go, and I don't recommend you do, honestly Ecco the Dolphin felt better in design and ambience in the 90s and certainly now there are a whole host of better metrodvanias to try.

Loved the game from when i was a kid, and returned to replay it a couple of times. This steam replay I just finished was, like, the fourth or fifth one, and I don't regret it for one bit.
It's a beautiful game of exploration and loneliness, wonder and challenge.
The soundtrack is amazing, the game mechanic of singing songs to "cast" the abilities blew my mind when i first played it, the art style and visuals still hold up till this day even though it's quite old.
It is a project of love and passion, and I really wish more people knew about this game.
Sure it has its flaws, but it is genuinely a time well spent.

Even if old by now and has its flaws it is a good game and pleasant to play. Nothing truly wrong with it except the disappointment of the true ending not having any payoff since no sequel was or will ever be made.

When I think of video games as an art form, this game is often the first to come to mind. The character designs, game play, and story all mix together in such an excellent way.

The bow on top, and I cannot express this strongly enough, is the soundtrack. This was one of my earliest purchases on Steam, and I've had the soundtrack for years. Even if this game is not your thing, I would highly recommend getting the soundtrack.

If you want a whimsical game about a fish girl on an adventure of self discovery...and that gets kind of dark and crazy at the end...this is for you. Check it out, you won't regret it.

Overview:
Aquaria, developed by Derek Yu and Alec Holowka, is a unique indie game that combines elements of exploration, puzzle-solving, and storytelling in an underwater world. The game is often praised for its beautiful hand-drawn art style, atmospheric music, and engaging gameplay mechanics.

Gameplay:
Players control Naija, a mermaid-like creature, as she navigates the vast ocean, uncovering secrets and solving puzzles. The controls are fluid, allowing for seamless swimming through the vibrant underwater environments. The game features a non-linear structure, encouraging exploration and rewarding players with hidden treasures and lore.

Visuals and Sound:
The hand-drawn graphics are stunning, with each area of the ocean offering a distinct visual style. The game’s soundtrack, composed by Alec Holowka, complements the visuals perfectly, enhancing the immersive experience. The music dynamically changes based on the player’s actions and location, adding to the overall atmosphere.

Story:
Aquaria weaves a captivating narrative about self-discovery and connection with the ocean. As Naija uncovers her past and the mysteries of her world, players become emotionally invested in her journey. The storytelling is subtle, often conveyed through environmental cues and interactions rather than traditional dialogue.

Legacy:
The game has had a lasting impact on the indie game scene, inspiring many developers with its art and design. Sadly, Alec Holowka's passing in 2020 was a significant loss to the gaming community. His contributions to Aquaria and other projects continue to resonate, and his legacy is honored through the games he helped create.

Final Thoughts:
Aquaria is a beautifully crafted game that stands out for its artistic presentation and engaging gameplay. It’s a heartfelt journey that encourages exploration and discovery, making it a must-play for fans of indie titles. The tragic loss of Alec Holowka adds a poignant layer to the game's legacy, reminding us of the passion and creativity that fuel the gaming industry

I really wanted to like this game. I love underwater games (my all time favorites include Soma and Subnautica) and i love exploration games focusing on lore and ruins (I adore Ashes 2063 and Stalker).

I have spent 12 hours playing this game. 12 is a lot of hours. You can accomplish a lot in 12 hours. In this game though? All you are doing is very, very slowly going through very long, blue tunnels getting repeatedly shot at by the same monsters you've killed 100 times already. If you die, you lose all progress from 20-30 minutes. Yes, you do gain more magic songs and abilities et cetera, but nothing really helps with the overwhelming sense of long slowness.

Everyone says the story is great. Okay, you're a sea-elf of some sort and you've lost your memories so you're looking around for information. 12 hours later, okay, there's several ruined towns that did bad stuff with magic. That's pretty standard for any fantasy game. The protagonist is vaguely wishing for a husband. Okay. Not a whole lot of emotions or stakes to the story.

I played this game during a weekend where I had unusually large amounts of free time, and it still feels like a waste. I'd rather do some reading and writing. In current year (2024) I don't recommend spending your time on this, there's much more engaging games out there, this one just feels too slow and grindy.

Also it has a painfully slow and boring food crafting system - always a red flag for a game that's wasting your time.
