great
Preamble
I haven’t played any games of the Thief series before. My review is based on a first-time experience and a comparison to the Dishonored series.
The game was released in 2014, sharing the same year with Dark Souls 2, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Far Cry 4, and The Evil Within.
My opinion
Well, I have a list of things that made me make this review ‘Don’t recommend’.
1. Unnecessarily complicated controls for a controller. Most of the buttons feel out of place. ‘X’ is used for cover, steal, and open actions that require a bit of a wait to see the correct prompt to press a button.
2. Enormous amounts of loading screens and seamless loadings (background streaming). I imagine how annoying it was back in the time when computers weren’t that powerful.
3. Poor environmental design for quick navigation through the city. Closer to the end of the game, I started to remember a few ways, but… why is there only one path to go from point A to point B? From this comes the fourth point.
4. Huge limitations to choose paths to the final destination. It could be cool to have a variety for your own playstyle.
5. Characters are cliché and dull. The Queen of the Beggars seems to be inspired by Granny Rags (*Dishonored*).
6. ‘Gentle’ General Thief-Taker, villain, is a joke. Starting with the character design and ending with his pitiful appearances to stop (read ‘kill’) Garrett.
7. Sometimes, dialogues become almost inaudible and environmental sounds rise up in volume.
8. Poor quality of the storyline. I believed it would get better.
9. Square Enix connection to the servers could be disabled by a patch after servers were taken down. Nah, wait for an attempt to connect to the servers and then see the main menu.
10. Stealth is not the worst but didn’t impress at all. Invisibility in dark areas is a game conventionality.
11. Extremely uncomfortable switch between arrows on the controller. First, I need to choose an arrow in a circle and then press a button to change the arrow. Maybe I haven’t understood how to make it quicker, but that showed a user-unfriendly design.
What I have found okay:
1. Asylum. Suddenly, the game changes more to horror with screamers, changing items behind and appearing people from nowhere, but it was a cool chapter for my taste.
2. Music.
3. 10-15 hours for completion.
I've played Thief 3, which is way waaay older and, from what I've heard, is considered to be the worst of the original Thief trilogy. Still, to me it was a great game and I'd rather replay that than play this garbage. Definitely not worth it, even if on sale.
For a old game the graphics and game play are very well done. If you like games like dishonored, or any stealth game this game is for you!
An absolute classic stealth game. Amazing story, and fun gameplay.
Thief, or for some, Thief 4, is a pretty mid game overall.
I haven't played any of the old Thief games so I can only talk about what I have here and there are a few things I think this game does poorly or worse than Dishonored.
First things first, this game feels like Dishonored's little brother, from many gameplay perspectives and the fact that you also have supernatural powers like in Dishonored, even tho they are way less important here. The only one I really used was a mode that highlights all the loot and interactables. Apart from that I found little use for these abilities.
This game also has some degree of parkour, which really feels like a first person Assassin's Creed. You also can't jump yourself but instead the game does that for you when you run at something where you would jump normally, also like Assassin's Creed. Because of this being prefixed you sometimes do jumps you didn't plan to do, but overall this is quite cool.
This game is, of course, focused on stealth, but you have the ability to fight foes when you get spotted... and this really feels implemented badly. You can only dodge and attack really and it just feels done bad, it dosen't feel rewarding or good in any way, it's hard to describe. Just don't get into fights and you won't notice. You can actually beat the game without ever getting into any fights.
The only thing I think this game has over Dishonored is the lockpicking, it's simple but it's cool. Other than that I think Dishonored beats Thief in every way. The reason I still wanted to recommend it is if you played all the Dishonored games and want more, but if not, play those first.
Overall, I still had fun with Thief, it definitely isn't the worst game.
Have fun!
It's a decent compartmenal stealth game if you crank up the difficulty. And stealing feels nice.
Just get the original series instead
Shit game. Slop. The original three are far better. This is on-rails, boring, unimaginative crap.
I need this type of a man in my life, lol.
Played hundreds of other games online and on mobile, but this is the first game I've ever played from the Thief series. I find it to be unbelievably underrated; it's literally got everything:
Stealth? Yes
Melee combat? Yes, but very limited
Archer? Yes
Collector? Yes
Mini-games and puzzles? Yes
Huge map? Yes
Intricate design and care for the details? Yes
Nice music and story writing? Yes
Great lore? Yes
Only things I disliked were the loading scenes (occured a bit too often), lack of alignment with real history (it still has tiny details, from the titles of the characters to the naming of the locations, that are very historical, but would have preferred more), lack of depth with the characters (feels barebones, as in you are the only entity truly alive), and the holding and spamming the letter e to get through windows and certain locations (repetitive and boring).
Everything else was genuinely great, you won't regret it. Took me 31+ hours to reach ch7, wonder how many more to finish the game and then the DLC.
Mediocre story and main character but gameplay wise isn't bad.
cant believe i never played this until 2024. what a great game
its cool
Glad this was free and I wasn't robbed of any septims myself
Overall this is an atmospheric game cloaked in continuous twilight and shadows with generally excellent graphics and believable AI from your all-too-plentiful opponents, who always try to kill you on site.
The layout of the city is very complicated, confusing, and very difficult to learn despite having played this for several years on and off.
Some of the levels are very large and complex and sometimes you wonder what you are supposed to be doing, and the 'map' only show a very close proximity to where you are.
The fundamental story-line, ultimately doesn't seem to make much sense and is something of an anti-climax but it's fun getting there anyway.
Annoyances include some 'boss' fights that would be unwinable without a considerable amount of the right ammunition - which you may not have - coming across the same baddies at points where you have to continually cross to get to other regions (who respawn too quickly), resulting in you having to waste valuable ammunition (which is expensive and difficult to finance) all too often.
The game would be improved if this aspect was addressed, either than or include more rat-runs that would enable them to be bypassed.
Overall it's a good if not excellent game that is worth 7 out of 10.
Well, the game is definitely much better than the fans of the series rated it when it was released. They were probably annoyed that Thief wasn't exactly the same game they had dreamed of and wasn't exactly like the previous versions. To be honest, from my point of view, I don't see where and how Thief has moved to far away from its origins.
Sure, it has a few flaws, such as the side missions you have to do for the fence Basso, as they're practically always pretty easy break-ins because there's practically no one to catch you. You break in, you're alone and you clean out the place. There are occasionally a few traps that aren't too tricky, but otherwise it's “a walk in the park”. The hardest part is finding the different locations in the city and figuring out how to get there. The journey to get there is actually more exciting and tricky than the break-in itself. Even if the routes often have to be taken repeatedly.
However, the story missions keep you on your toes and should be fun for most stealth game fans, especially as there is a lot to discover and to try out.
The guards are not to easy to outwit, especially if you want to reach your goal without violence. They're not particularly good at finding you in cover, but you still have to outmaneuver them. Wild and aggressive shooting with arrows usually results in the early death of our hero, because this apparently pi**es the guards of. So you have to think carefully about what you do.
The "boss fights" are a bit cheeky, however. They can really spoil the fun on the higher difficulty levels. Even on "easy" they are anything but easy, because timing is so important. The time pressure is enormous and one tiny wrong decision means having to load a save game and start over, because manual saving during the boss fights is not allowed.
Fortunately, there are only two of these classic boss fights.
Nevertheless, if Thief is on sale and you like stealth games, you should go for it.
For a ten-year-old game, it has aged well.
I love opening empty drawers
All of the thief games are one of a kind.
If you enjoy the feeling of delayed gratification then these games are for you (yes, all for of them!).
Sadly, single player games are a dying breed. Nothing like these types of games are made anymore.
So, if nothing else buy it just to support the franchise (or whatever is left of it)!
This Thief is really fun and beautiful the few i played, i played it a long time a go with a really shity computer and i never get back to it with a descent computer so i can't say more of it
A fun stealth action game! The segmented open-world, separated by loading screens, might be a little confusing and disrupts the gameplay, but it's nothing too serious. 7/10

good story
yes
Great game if you like a mixture of aggressive play, stealth and puzzles. The story line is good,
opening empty drawers is my new favorite night activity
Better than expected, considering how the OG fandom disliked this game.
It had potential to revitalize the series methinks.
Quite fun, not without flaws. If you like sneak & yoink games, this will be your jam.
.
best stealth game
This turned out to be not something the trailer showed it would be.
fsfasf
As an old fan of the Thief series I think this game updates the original story and updates the game for the next generation to play. When this game was first announced I was excited to get my hands on it and I own it for both PC and the XBox. Highly recommend checking this game out.
I played this when i was little and loved it , played it again and really enjoy it . The Writing and Story are Horrific though jesus christ! . you don't notice stuff like that when your 11 lol . Still Fun game but it seems to be written by a 14 year old fool.
Good
Still a very good game and I love to come back and play it after some time away. A little short but fun to play :)
one of the most underrated story games of all time BUY IT.
This game is exactly what you think it is and it's awesome. I don't know how good it is as a sequel because I haven't played the other three but I enjoy it and think its great and to me that's all that matters.
I am absolutely in love with this game! Why did I wait 10 years to play it?
Please, if you like stealth games with great atmosphere - Do yourself a favor and buy this game. You won't regret it, I promise!
It gets better and better the longer I play. I see I have only 1.6 I see but this time feels like 10 hours, I was so incredibly immersed!
I would not recommend this if you are looking for a good stelf game
very thief but also very building which is bad
Honestly, the story just is unengaging.
I like the colours and the features. Also it is different compare to the previous parts
Nice game. I had some problems understanding what is climbable and what is not, apart from that I had fun.
Great stealth game and a very good story.
My favourite childhood game. I would play this on my xbox with my dad, have such great memories with it. Especially further into the game where it got more scary. My younger sister always got so scared haha
In this game you can play as Joko Widodo.
pgood
MacOS gamer, played Thief 3: Deadly Shadows. Do yourself a favor - go into the settings, and disable 'Map Markers'. Even though the world-building was disappointing, I still enjoyed seeing The City come to life in HD.
Growing up and into college, I did not have the best of computers for gaming; as a result, in 2012, I was playing games from 2004 like Thief Deadly Shadows. Playing Thief 3 was a decent experience, as I had never really played a stealth game before in first-person. I have fond-ish memories of exploring 'The City', hanging around the hub areas, talking to some NPC's, and have absolutely no recollection of the story until I watched all the cutscenes on YouTube for an hour straight. I appreciated how the developers of the Thief games were either the same studio or a sister studio of the teams that made Deus Ex, but honestly didn't even know this reboot existed until I did an exhaustive sweep on Steam of Mac games. I actually played Deus Ex Mankind Divided right before this, and I believe it's the same studio/some of the employees worked on it. During the end credits for Mankind Divided, I saw some of the staff wearing 'Thief' t-shirts. My thoughts on this game somewhat mirror my thoughts on Mankind Divided, even thought this game is not nearly as good as Mankind Divided, and unlike that entry, did not really honor the series legacy. Some thoughts:
Gameplay: it's not bad, but it's not great. The level design is pretty bland, and pretty linear, which isn't what Thief is supposed to be in my opinion. The skill progression system is... bad. It's not particularly interesting, and I didn't upgrade a single skill until Chapter 5 (out of 8).
'The City': In a next-gen version of the game, not to mention a reboot, they had a chance to completely update the 'world-building' aspect of the City, and they utterly failed to create a memorable world or universe. There is no real mystique, no interesting lore, no interesting characters - there are two 'hubs' within the hub of the city, two bars, with two interactable characters between the both of them. Not great. I played the game for 11 hours, as of this review, and didn't really dig into the side-quests at all, though I did finish the story.
The story: uninteresting, bland. It was genuinely mind-blowing how a AAA game, or is it a AA game, had such a poor story, with such uninteresting characters. I think if 'The City' had been more interesting, it might have offset it, but it didn't.
Graphics: Good! I'm someone who isn't particularly picky about graphics, especially being a MacOS gamer, and I enjoyed the graphics - it was actually the best part, to see 'The City' rendered in HD, even if it was bland and not as good as the previous entry.
Overall, is it worth playing? Kind of - I picked it up for like 3 or 5 dollars, and it's available on MacOS. I played through it out of respect to the previous entries, but I understand why this game got such poor reviews. The feedback on Steam is 'mostly positive' I think, just out of pity, and respect for the franchise. It's not a bad game, everything is serviceable, but it's all just bland and has no 'great' qualities. Even though the world-building was disappointing, I still enjoyed seeing The City come to life in HD.
I think this is one of those franchises that, if it ever came back, should focus on making a lower polygon version of a reboot. Instead of focusing on amazing graphics, put all your resources into open-ended level design, flesh out the story of The City and the metaphysical lore, and add some Metal Gear Solid like exploration+experimentation to the experience. Forget the arrows, maybe add a grappling hook - go full ninja. Do something interesting, different - combine it with Tenchu.
Oh, one more thing - the boss fights in Chapter 7 and 8 stink. This game, like Deus Ex Mankind Divided, did not need boss fights.
Overall
thief4 - for a stealth game player - is alright... just a steady - alright.
I enjoyed playing it through. However it is more anal than it needs to be - thief(1-2) was challenging, I will admit, but thief4 was just anal.
It certainly was enjoyable creeping around and figuring out how to get to the objectives/loot.

Game design
Most of the challenge comes from ducking and diving between patrolling AI which have very linear routes.
The bosses may have been seen as a modern touch and they were alright, but I am unsure if I enjoyed them more than the rest of the game.
Combat was a case of dodging twice and hitting twice most of the time(which could be difficult to keep up with the rhythm of it) and then maybe dropping a few arrows.
It's obvious it aspired to be what dishonoured was a couple years before it.
Its worth noting the devs did try to be adventurous at times(in the open world) and it seems like they were castrated by someone or something; such a shame, as in-particular ,if the conversations through out the town were really usable it would make this game a really cool experience - perhaps even if they made it more arcady feel where they were positively integrated with the player's exploration.
I found most things just by exploring blindly and felt little connection. Though I admit I have not done absolutely everything.

Sound
The sound design was weird. the game is quiet and the moment you get caught the volume GOES UP REALLY LOUD. This also applied to FMVs. People's voices ended up being louder than they needed to be, which was a pain because people talk a lot(it was good to track people though in game). The sounds were fine, but the chatter was not great, it was passably mediocre. Compared to Dishonoured which I think did much better.
The music was mostly the same, with the exception of the Strings and electronic sounds that make most of the battle sequences... I did not like the end level's electronic sounds, and they motivated me to keep out of combat - even if I aimed to not be caught in the first place...
The ambience was not too bad, just a shame it was half there most of the time and it was not really offset with anything else particularly well. At times it sounded like it was composed by Mr Tarmia who did Amnesia 1' score; it was quite moody.

Narrative and Story
The Graphics were a strong point of the game, with a medieval darkness to it, with poor people suffering on the streets and guards walking round as braggarts and with brutality; generally the setting worked. The ambient music did fit in well.
I'm unsure if one party were meant to be the hammers, but it was interesting to see another pagan religion rise up again – even if they were just obnoxious.
The city was built up and looked good.
The story was passable, again, it was a bit weird, maybe taking a snipe at the stereo-typical thief's solitary dark character which, though the original thief was painted as being more chilled and less serious. Garret -on this -seems like he has something up his behind and is very rigid.
Who is to know what the relationship is between the girl and the thief, but at the end, the girl just seems mad and anything she has to say says nothing good about her. Although the story was OK, its unclear why it all happened or why we should care.

Map design
The map design - in each mission -does appear to be linear and like any linear design is designed by the devs for the player to do a particular thing, in a certain way. After all games like this are puzzles where the dev wants the player to do *something*. It could have been worse, but it was not dishonoured.
The open world map design was good in the most part - big, open and complicated - however again its not great that some areas were 'hard-wired', where certain routes always worked best, and zero improvisation was better and at times impossible ; that sucked -and is the story of the game in general!

Other Stuff
-The e button for contextual interaction with the environment was not ideal and could cause trouble, as it does in most games I have played.
-There were a few bugs on here too. Some were pretty good, such as disruptions that would stop AI in their tracks – which gave me a break.

Final words
As I have played the thief games before I can appreciate people's complaints, but it is still a decent game that is worth while playing through. At some point I would like to play it again, especially on the different play styles, such as beating people up and performing the dishonour-esque head short animations.
Really! theif4 could be much worse! And was probably never going to be as good as dishonoured anyway...

This is dreadful, I played this a decade ago and stumbled upon it while checking my library today only to get a nauseous flashback of the disapointment I got from playing this. They should have named this game ''Burglar'' or something, instead of using a well known brand. This game has nothing to do with the original series, yet it uses the title and main character name. Meh. Thumbs down
