Описание

LA-MULANA is an “Archaeological Ruin Exploration Action Game,” bringing the classic appeal of adventure with the punishing difficulty of retro-inspired gaming. Search inside ancient ruins, seeking out the “Secret Treasure of Life” – which sleeps in the sprawling ruins of “LA-MULANA” and is said to be the beginning of all civilization. Unfortunately, priceless artifacts very rarely give themselves up easily.

Apart from the plethora of traps lying in wait, there are also monsters on the prowl, protecting the ruins. Head for the innermost depths of the ruins while solving a variety of mysteries, fending off monsters, and disarming traps. Forging ahead will be no simple task – the further into the depths you reach, the more difficult the mysteries become. The guardians of LA-MULANA do not take their job lightly.

LA-MULANA on Steam is the PC port version of the acclaimed remake for WiiWare. One of the first NIGORO games, LA-MULANA was originally created back in the creators’ “amateur” days and has been renown worldwide.
This game was created based on “that old-time feeling.” The creators wished to play the sort of games that enthralled them back in the day, only with more volume. The operability and difficulty level are certainly not “new school”. However, this game is highly recommended to gamers seeking out that feeling of total immersion that allows you to go full-on head-to-head with a game not found in somewhat lighter terms.

Coming up on it's ninth birthday, LA-MULANA continues to captivate, frustrate and annihilate new and old players alike. Whether it's your first time falling into the ruins or your 900th of getting decimated by Mushussu, we thank you for donning your explorer's hat, hoisting the whip and diving into our game.

Good luck. You're going to need it.

I'm maybe halfway through my first playthrough of La-Mulana and have to say it's a metroidvania masterpiece. As pretentious as it sounds, this is not something you can simply pick up and play. It'll take rigorous note-taking and experimentation to have a shot at solving this game's many riddles. But if you want a game that can be a project to you, something to come back to over the months and figure out together with a group of friends, this is that game! Rest assured that the ruins you'll be exploring are drop-dead gorgeous, and the #1 sleepygirl is somewhere inside...

This game always intrigued me after hearing so much of it's puzzles being very cryptic and the game also being difficult. When I finally decided to play it through I wonder why people rarely mentioned about the game being a super good platformer too, like when you get used to the controls they are tight!

When you start to unveil the mystery behind La-Mulana atleast I got hooked into the game more and more. I have never felt such an addictive hook to complete a game before, one of the things to me was the feeling that arose when you figured out the puzzles taking you further in the game. Of course there were a lot of time spent head scratching and frustration but I only looked 2 things from the internet throughout the whole playthrough ( and I still feel kinda ashamed of it :D ).

This game with it's amazing soundtrack became my favourite game of all time! ( so far )

As much as this game does right, there is double that for what it does wrong. And damn does this game hate you for progressing. From riddles that dont make sense to bosses that will spawn on top of your slow ass character just for a cheap hit. You can be inventive and difficult without hating your players.

La-Mulana... It's a great game with wonderful soundtrack and nice artstyle. You'll feel like a true archeologist in this game.

However, there are some warnings to say.

This game doesn't respect your time. What it respects is your intelligence and perception. It's a game more focused on puzzle solving rather than combat (although boss fights can be challenging). If I could suggest something, it would be this: take notes (preferably on paper, there is ingame way of recording info, but it has limited space). Also, while it may be easier, try to not look up solutions online until you're really stumped and can't find a solution.

“La Mulana delivers on a fun, challenging and rewarding exploration experience that is presented with polish.”

No, it doesnt. It's a challenging platformer, where you rewarded with death traps for exploration and its cryptic puzzles and clues are far from being polished.
It is still a good game, if you want to be handheld by guide through the majority of the game, or have tons of free time for trials and errors (mostly errors)
Cannot recommend it in the presence of much better puzzle games

How do you start to describe La-Mulana?

It's very frustrating, it hates you, but it's one of the best metroidvanias ever made, and definitely one that challenges your brain. Try to go in with as few hints as possible, ideally play with someone who already has played it and can help you when needed.

OMG! How have I never reviewed La Mulana before? It is the undisputed king of "mysterious" games, with incredible depth but no hand-holding, so the player has the thrill of figuring everything out on their own (or via FAQs and forums; you can NOT make it through this game without consulting FAQs numerous times, but in a good way).

High difficulty, highly opaque and byzantine and mysterious, but so rewarding. I can't count the number of people I've heard say that they wish they could play La Mulana blind again to re-experience all that discovery and surprise and delight for the first time.

I'm revisiting its store page now (and noticing that I've somehow never reviewed it before now) because I convinced a friend to play it, and he's loving it, and I'm experiencing something like that joy of "playing it fresh" vicariously through him.

If you haven't played this yet, play it NOW, and know you have my sympathy regarding the difficulty and mysteriousness, but also my envy that you're getting to see it all for the first time.

La-Mulana is a great Metroidvania!

The ruins are Full of traps, puzzles, riddles, weird creatures and trinkets.
There is so much secrets to find out , leads to follow and shortcuts to remember that you will need to take notes and make maps !
By the end of the game I had a pile of paper full of scribbles and notes with each page's writing being less and less coherent because of the sheer amount of thing i had to write... and my sanity slowly decaying because of my time trying to understand The Gate of llusion.

I swear that I AM NOT A FOOL I AM NOT A FOOL I AM NOT A FOOL I AM NOT A FOOL I AM NOT A FOOL I AM NOT A FOOL

The riddles and puzzle can sometime be very abstract, don't be afraid to look up a guide when you are really stuck. But try to learn self control and not rely on one each time you are stuck.

Great game, can be very frustrating but so SO satisfaying when you have that "Eurekâ moment"!
Just saying, but I do have a curator page. If you like my remarks about games, you can find more of them here: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44130985-TDP%27s-Gaming-Escapades
When I announced to my friends group that I was finally going to play La-Mulana, some were cheering me on to play it and some were absolutely horrified, imploring me to reconsider. And this seemed very odd to me. Why even mentioning the name of this game causes reactions that each land on far sides of the recommendation spectrum? I was curious to find out why, and therefore I started playing the game.
Needless to say, I get it now...

Fuck around and find out: the official video game

La-Mulana is known among people as an incredibly hard and cryptic game; one that will kick your ass very hard if you let it, and hides stuff so well to the point only less than %20 of its players have found and defeated a single boss. And there's good reason for this.
La-Mulana treats its gameplay as if you are actually an ill-prepared archaeologist exploring centuries old ruins that nobody has found yet. The game deliberately takes away the abilities you have by default in other games, gives you one weapon, and sends you on your merry way to find stuff and figure things out on your own. You are not able to read signs and carvings unless you have specific items. There is no map in the game unless you find them in the areas; and when you do find them, they just show the basic layouts with no details or the ability to put waypoints on them. The instructions or solutions for puzzles can be on the other side of the map or even in an entirely different area, and you might not immediately find out if you have solved them. Some of the pathways are hidden behind breakable or fake walls, requiring you to be curious in order to find them. Puzzles can get extremely brain teasing at some points, and the game gives you no hints whatsoever.
Not only that, the game punishes you in absolutely despairing ways for doing stuff wrong, screwing around with the wrong things, not using multiple save slots or not having the necessary equipment. Doors might close behind you, trapping you with no way of getting out. One simple mistake in getting an equipment upgrade can lock off the entire area. Sometimes you might get through incredibly challenging sections, just to find out all you did was worthless as you do not have a necessary item in your possession. Traps are plenty and your death will be swift if you are not paying attention to obvious signs. Bosses will utterly annihilate you if you ever dare to face them underprepared or fail to read their attack patterns.
La-Mulana DEMANDS YOU to explore, write notes and pay attention to everything while messing around with the environment whenever you can and saving your progress frequently, and will try its damnedest to constantly kick your ass along the way. Every player's playthrough is unique based on what they do and in what order they find items. Every stone tablet, NPC dialogue or suspicious structure might have hints hidden in them that can be used to solve a later puzzle, and should you try to tackle them without doing what I described above, you will be wandering around with no hope of accomplishing anything.

I am actually proud of myself despite not finishing the game

La-Mulana never tries to hold your hand or make stuff easier. It forces you to do all of the aforementioned tasks on your own, or consult online help. Otherwise, you will keep running in circles. And this is the game's biggest strength and also its greatest weakness.
On one hand, finding everything on your own can be pretty exhilarating. That feeling when you find the solution to a puzzle that was bugging you for a while, finally discover a new area and progress further with your exploration attempts, or re-entering a room just to see its structures suddenly springing to life and moving around as the result of your recent actions can be incomparable to anything else you have felt while playing a video game. The moments when something happens by pure accident and has the solution of the puzzle clicking in your head, resulting in you covering your face with your hands and marveling at your inability of figuring out obvious things, might not get replicated in another game for a good while.
But on the other hand, it never feels good to be utterly lost and helpless. The game does not have a hint system in place and expects you to do all the work yourself, so if you have never even thought of taking notes, you either have to quit playing or look up a guide and try to find out what you need to do next based on what you have. And if you do use an online guide to progress, your victory over the game's challenges will feel hollow in my honest opinion.
I personally believe that La-Mulana a game that works best if you go in blind and try to march forward until you are %100 sure there's no hope of further progression. Unlike other games, I do not feel like accessing the ending is a must in La-Mulana, but a reward for those who go above and beyond to get it. Maybe sometimes, it's not wrong to leave a game unfinished and simply doing your best is enough, as a sincere attempt at doing that feels much better than getting a hollow victory by any means necessary. And I do believe La-Mulana is one such game. I may never finish the game now or in the future, but I am very happy with how far I got on my own.

Okay, fine, I'm done with the gameplay...

Even though I have shown that I like La-Mulana a lot so far, that's not to say the game isn't without flaws. In fact, the jumping is where the gameplay gets weird. Jumping in this game is very floaty and combined with the fact that the game doesn't allow you to change trajectory in mid-air, this can make platforming challenges very hard until you get used to it.
And then we have the audiovisual presentation. The visual design of the game is really well-done, with every area in the game having a distinct theme and design. Although occasionally, you can run into specific structures that reside in the background except for one part of them, and it's rather hard to notice this on first glance. Complimenting the visuals is the soundtrack which includes some very catchy tunes for each of the areas available in the game, making it one of the best soundtracks I have listened to so far.

TL;DR

The ultimate hurdle in liking La-Mulana, is its gameplay. It asks you to do a lot of things and never tries to help you. Definitely not for everyone, but if it clicks, you will have a really good time.

The puzzles are fine, mostly, but the gameplay itself feels unbelievably clunky and awkward. It's just not fun to play when most of the time is spent fighting the controls instead of solving puzzles.

This game is a love letter to old, bad game design in a bad way: Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest comes to mind.

You might like this game, but be warned. The bosses may be hard, but they are nothing compared to how often you will get stuck and not have a clue how to proceed. My criticisms come to 3 main points:

1. Non-intuitive. Jumping is an important part of this game. When you jump, the upward motion of the jump is fixed based on your movement. Then, as soon as you start coming down you can move with some remaining momentum. Similar momentum works when swimming. There is absolutely no momentum when running. You turn on a dime. Now, once you get used to jumping straight up and manouvering as you fall, it becomes painfull everytime you walk off a ledge and are locked into a dead, straight down drop. You cannot double jump. You cannot use your wall grapple.

This, combined with...

2. Knockback stuns, means the platforming goes from challenging to frustrating. Like in Castlevania, you get hit and you jump backwards, flashing and in agony with no control. Now, even getting around normal areas becomes frustrating when...

3. Random attacks and spawns hit you. Knocked into lava, enjoy nearly dying and when you swim out BAM a rock spawned at the top of the lava and flew out. There are no telegraphed attacks. Bats ruin your day for most of the game, and then come the medusa heads which, thankfully, appeared usually only 2 at a time. It does make bosses difficult, and it doesn't help that their hitboxes tend to be at the very apex of your jump. Many bosses come down to playing defensively and getting the occassional hit with a sub-weapon.

Traversal is vital to a metroidvania, and it's a headache in this game. There are fast travel points, but you still end up finding warping to zone 2, going through zone 7 to get to zone 5 gets you closer to where you are going. Or, you warp to zone 3 and find you can't access the rooms you want from the main area of the zone.

4. Finally, the puzzles. It's an incredibly puzzle heavy game, with many chokepoints where you'll find yourself stuck. There are hints all over, but a hint in one area is often for a puzzle you complete in another area. Often you do something, (like beat a boss) and randomly a passage opens in an unrelated area with no signaling to the player.

I'm not talking about breaking walls here. I'm talking about equiping an apparently useless item and using it in an obscure spot. I'm talking about walking into walls because there might be a teleport there. I'm talking about standing in the correct 5 places and attacking to the left 3 times, the right 3 times, and jumping.

Even using the wiki to solve puzzles is difficult, because you look up a problem in the area you are in. You need bombs, so how do you get the bombs? You need the flim-flam. OK, how do I get that? You need the Toaster. OK, but to get that you need to have beaten a boss in an area you don't have access to yet.

I powered through it, and it wasn't worth it. If you want to play this game without help, get a notebook and record everything. Make your own notes and your own maps. Also, read the manual. The manual actually has a lot of hints in the text and the images.

I love this game a lot, you're a Japanese American archeologist and you really feel like you're unearthing something wild. I will say for a first time run try to not spoil yourself on puzzles because a lot also explains the story and world of why things are happening, there's some good spoiler free guides for the really tough puzzles if you need help and if you get really stuck then I would look things up but if you go at it with paper and pencil to make notes and track stuff it's so rewarding. Boss fights are not this games strong suit many have weird patterns or just awful combat designs but there's ways around it and I would love to see more people play this.
