Played from a first person perspective and powered by a 3D engine utilising cutting edge technology, Penumbra is a substantial advancement of the genre. The unique physics system allows for true environmental interaction in a way not possible in other games. The player can open drawers, pull levers, pick up objects and now manipulate those objects in 3D space - all using natural mouse movements, creating a highly interactive and immersive game world.
Penumbra will put players on edge like never before as they explore ominous and mysterious environments, the unknown awaiting them behind every corner. The world is detailed both in terms of graphical fidelity and narrative character - Penumbra is a horrific experience that will grip players from its opening thrills to its chilling denouement.
- Detailed and atmospheric environments.
- State of the art interaction system.
- Thrilling blend of puzzles and action.
- Dark secrets to be discovered.

This game is a first-person horror game that is focused on puzzles and survival. The game is done by the game devs who did the game series Amnesia that I heard of but never played the game series because I watched clips of other people playing the game. This game does let you use weapons but only dynamite and whatever weapon you can use as a melee weapon. The enemies in the game are spiders, worms, and wolves. The wolves are the ones you will deal with the most since they walk through the areas you are going through. You can attack them but the combat system for the melee weapons is very weird to deal with when you click the left mouse button you have to swing your mouse for the melee weapon to swing. You can hide and attack the enemies but the wolves take a few hits before being taken out. You items to progress in the game. The puzzles in the game range from easy to hard at times. I had to use a guide since most of them I had no idea what I was doing in them. When you get to the end of this game you get a cliffhanger meaning you have to play the sequel. I give this game a 7 out of 10.
good startng point
Это старый лагающий кусок кода, но все равно по кайфу.
Played with a walkthrough (on easiest mode) cause I don't have the time to figure everything out on my own.
I couldn't finish the game however. I had to stop at the end. I couldn't kill Red. If it was possible, I'd tried to save him. But it was not, so I had to stop it.
It has some bugs, for example the locker, in which the "blank note" should have been hidden didn't open at first. When I figured out that you have to get it to open the door - it doesn't open with the right code, no, you need the paper as well! - I had to reload a former gamesave.
It was nice though. I like the frictional games.
PS: You can activate "simple weapon swing" in the settings.cfg, then it's easier to fight. Just search for it in the Steam communityhub.

Now THIS is what horror should be, a true miner´s nightmare
cool asff!!
Alright
Banger of a horror puzzle game. The combat is awful but I'm glad to hear it's been removed from the sequel. Amazing atmosphere, sound, and writing. Still worth playing in or beyond 2024!
Yes.
If you have the 10fps while looking at a direction bug and own Nvidia GPU, disable "Threaded optimization" for your penumbra.exe in Nvidia Control Panel
Pretty interesting to see where Frictional started. It's definitely a solid game, great story and some awesome puzzles. Having a weapon to fight back was nice and cool that it can interact with the environment sometimes, but I do understand why in Amnesia and later on you can't fight back, because it does takes away from the scary factor, and felt like I didn't even use the distracting items enough because I just boinked them things. Also, they do gives you several options for light and I mainly used the short-range infinite light almost all the time, not utilizing the rest at all. The story was pretty intriguing and the history of the place provides multiple layers to it, and of course exploring it all with our only friend in this forsaken land.
It feels like a step up from one of those "Escape the ___" games you might play on Addicting Games back in like 2007. It's pretty scary and it feels exactly like Amnesia: The Dark Descent, though the Dark Descent put way less of an emphasis on combat. Puzzles are fun, albeit more ambiguous than the Dark Descent as well. You will need a guide for very certain parts (at least I did).
This wasn't a make or break for me, but the combat sucks. I know that's the whole point, but trying to kill a spider or beat down a dog with a pickaxe that seems to ignore your inputs half the time is beyond frustrating, and using dynamite requires plain luck to succeed. It wouldn't be so bad if they embraced stealth throughout the entire thing, but parts like the spider tunnels are hellish because there's way too many spawns.
All-in-all, this is a good puzzler/horror game. It's just dated as hell.
Haha dogs go bonk brrr... masterpiece
Pros:
+ Atmospheric Design:
The game excels in creating a creepy, immersive atmosphere that keeps players on edge.
+ Unique Mechanics:
Innovative interaction mechanics, like dragging and throwing objects, add a layer of realism to puzzle-solving.
+ Engaging Story:
The narrative is intriguing, with a mysterious setting that unfolds gradually, drawing players into the lore.
+ Sound Design:
Excellent sound effects enhance the horror experience, making every creak and whisper feel ominous.
Cons:
- Clunky Combat System:
The combat mechanics feel awkward and unresponsive, making encounters frustrating rather than engaging.
- Excessive Corridor Design:
The game features overly linear level design, which can make exploration feel restrictive rather than expansive. The transition between large areas often feels disconnected.
- Pacing Issues:
The slow pacing and lengthy exploration segments can lead to boredom, especially during moments where little happens.
- Technical Glitches:
Players may encounter bugs and performance issues that disrupt immersion and gameplay flow.
5/10
I think its worth playing just to see how they evolved into Amnesia.
The chases are pretty crappy, and one or two puzzles are awful, but most of the game is decent.
I do wonder if there is enough story to warrant 3 parts. It felt like we just needed one last area to finish it off, but I guess I'll see later.
The spiders love jumping and giving hugs :D
The amount of fucking dogs I had to kill... How are they even down there???
Horrible. One of the worst games I'v ever played in my life. Frictional would obviously go on to make great games but I guess they had to get their bad ideas out with this one. Basically unplayable without a guide unless you want to waste hours and hours with the trial and error gameplay and obscure puzzles. I am hoping the sequel black plaque is better because the game does have an intriguing atmosphere, just ruined by the terrible gameplay. We shall see.
Cool game
Cool series, neat prototype of Amnesia and later frictional titles. I enjoyed the box focused combat with dogs.
i liked it even if ipa said it was silly
bad
Short first-person horror game with physics puzzles.
You travel to Greenland to investigate some stuff. The setting is nice for a horror game like this. Really enjoyed the way the game lets you figure out stuff on your own. If you just look at what is around you and what you have, you will be able to figure out what you need to do to progress. A couple of places have some slightly annoying parts where you are almost forced to die at least once, but in theory you can understand what you need to do on the first try if you are paying attention.
The game is 17 years old and kind of looks like a Source engine game, but I think the graphics create the right feeling for a horror game. I did not have any major issues running the game, though had a couple of crashes that might have been my own fault.
I enjoyed this more than Amnesia for some reason. You can only buy this game in a collection with the two other games in the series so get it during a sale. I haven't played the other two games yet so this is just a review for Penumbra: Overture
A zillion-year-old horror game that manages to be quite terrifying, well-made, and holds up as a great horror experience. Headphones are a must.
horror = mysterious and unsettling
Pretty good. Some gameplay was wonky.
Classic Horror and Puzzle game!
Played this one in October 2024.
The game was really amazing, It had a little bit of everything even though most of the things were puzzles, gotta say I loved the idea of killing the monsters first but after a while the game wasn't "horror" anymore, the only thing that was slightly really horror was the worm monster and the chases scenes.
From what I've heard there were supposed to be three episodes or games but they only made two?
I will check them out and play them.
Overall it was a really good game, 8/10.
I have never played a puzzle type horror game like this with more bullsh*t, plot points so nonsensical that you basically need to look up a guide, doors becoming unlocked just because of plot events with no direct indication of that change, puzzle moments that either don't make satisfying sense or where there is little indication of what to do (namely having to light fluid on the ground to kill spiders with no indication of it being flammable). So many times in this game I was so incredibly frustrated that I almost quit, continuing to play only because I wanted to see the story's resolution.
Great game from pre amnesia frictional. Yeah combat isnt all that great and theres not much variety in enemies, but its still very charming, interesting story, characters, and visual/world story telling and a bit spooky.
Graphics are decent for an indie game of its time, with lighting being the strongest feature like most horror titles.
Theres also a lot of cool mechanical things like the way you figure out getting past certain things or puzzles and ive even had to get a paper out to figure out things twice lol
Game time: 4 hours
bad dog
Fairly short, pretty alright, a chunk of jank
Okay so the game makes it clear but this is the first part of a series, so if you buy this and like it, expect to buy the sequel aswell.
As a horror game, Penumbra's just OK, it's got some cool atmosphere, some simple yet good puzzles and seemingly no apparent bugs.
I will say that the atmosphere comment is by far the biggest praise I have for this game, while I have issues with the lighting, not for the reasons you'd expect, it's actually FAR too bright to the point where I never had to use any of the lighting tools the game gave me, and this with gamma reduced. the actual environments themselves are interesting enough. Delving deeper into a bunker, turned mineshaft, turned research facility felt pretty unnerving at points. All the different notes, environmental objects, etc. really help give this place a good bit of history that helps sell the setting.
Game's lacking in characters for obvious reasons but I did enjoy the small bit of company they did provide, the wasn't hostile of course. Won't go into it for spoilers but it gives the game a nice bit of flavour.
Sounds design was fine overall, but it's a bit easy to tell when a sound is just on repeat to mess with you for ambience instead of actually being something in the environment meant to scare you, but it's alright.
Beyond that, I really don't have much to say about the game, it's good enough for a recommendation so I'll list out a few problems just to not give the wrong impression that there are no problems
The number one issue I had was technical, game doesn't have a borderless windowed option so alt-tabbing is a nightmare if you find yourself having to do this. The game does not have options beyond 1080p resolution aswell. Easy fix for this is to go into the games settings.cfg in My Documents/Penumbra: Overture and find the line in there that'll let you alter the in-game resolution to match your native resolution. As for the alt-tabbing issue, I used Borderless Fullscreen which worked flawlessly.
The combat is waaaaaay to janky for my liking. Survival horror games usually don't have great combat, especially melee combat, but Penumbra's jankier than most. Thrusting feels useless, knockdowns can be abused albeit somewhat inconsistently and I could never really gauge the range on swinging my weapon, didn't really enjoy it.
The enemy AI is atrocious. The main consistent threat throughout the game are dogs, but they are not very threatening. They lose interest very easily, they have the ability to call for backup which works SO inconsistently that it just wastes your time more than anything else whenever they run off and if you want an easy way to deal with them, they cannot hit you when you are slightly elevated, like on a box or barrel, by crouching, you can hit them very easily when they lunge at you. They do not respawn, they're not all that numerous, they just waste my time and stealth is so barebones and easy to do that I found it way more enjoyable to just clear out the area so I can run around to my hearts content.
I'll give them credit, for their first game they could've done worse, it's good enough that I'm willing to see where this goes, solid effort
This game was quite the Experience!
I like how it sets up its plot in properly making you wonder what happened in the past and it helps you guide onwards into the game, which is always a way to get me to like any game. All Puzzles were logic puzzles that weren't that much of a drag to figure out except two near the end, which one I think I just didn't understand it and just guessed, and the other one felt like a test of memory, which is not one of my strongsuits, hehe...
Only downside of this game is its combat, which was very easy to figure out and break. I get that the point of the game is to use Combat as a last resort, but when using a simple move to destroy everything without much worry makes it seem like your first resort. The Dogs felt Dangerous but not Dangerous enough, and that is all I'll say to avoid spoilers.
With that though, I say this game is a great little 6 hour experience for anyone that loves Horror, especially like Amnesia, and with how often the Penumbra Collection is on sale for like $3, I'm sure anyone could give this game at least a chance.
trash
Yes a fun little game to pass the time, if on sale buy it
Awersome game, feels just like amnesia dark descent!
fun but the ending was a buzzkill. i have the next game anyway, but still
One of the best horror games of my childhood
liked it
Fairly challenging for someone who enjoys puzzle games and horror. I liked it, although there would be some minor details I'd change, I gotta say it holds up.
