Thomas Was Alone is an indie minimalist 2D platformer about friendship and jumping and floating and anti-gravity. Guide a group of rectangles through a series of obstacles, using their different skills together to get to the end of each environment.
Listen to awesome music by David Housden. Jump over rectangles meticulously placed by Mike Bithell. Listen to voiceover read wistfully and a bit amusingly by Danny Wallace.
Thomas Was Alone tells the story of the world's first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well, not escape: Escape is a strong word. 'Emerge' might be better. 'Emerge' has an air of importance about it, while keeping the myriad plot twists and superhero origin stories you'll discover under wraps. We didn't even mention the bouncing. That'd be overkill.
Key Features
- Beat 100 levels, and uncover the story of the AIs.
- Utilize the unique skills of 10+ characters.
- Immerse yourself in David Housden's critically acclaimed procedural score.
- Chuckle along to Danny Wallace's narration.

Made me emotional over squares. 6/10
I wanted to like this game; really I did. It's a neat concept to return to, especially in 2025 in the era of LLMs and other AI proliferating. Unfortunately, I found the controls to be a little sluggish, and the difficulty of the platforming by mid game demands a level of precision that the controls just do not support. Now, I played on keyboard, so maybe it is better with controller? It is also worth noting that I do not love nor am I terribly good at platformers. I was interested in the game for the narrative and the puzzle solving, personally, and both of those seem to be quite good, at least as far as I was able to get (I rage quit at about level 5.2). I can see how others who have more skill and love for the genre may feel less frustrated by the control issue. Unfortunately, I experienced mounting frustration at the unforgiving timing, which forced me to repeat sections over and over again and was exacerbated by having to hear the same voiceover lines repeatedly. The checkpoint system is reasonable, but repeatedly dying due to my character failing to jump on command, especially on moving platforms soured my enjoyment. If you're a big fan of platformers and have a high tolerance for repetition, this is a neat little gem, but if you're interested in a more casual, story-driven, puzzle game (like me) this game will probably just frustrate you.
beautiful
finished it in one day took around 8 hours. it was fun and it suites kids more because of its simple and easy stages.
好绝一游戏。怎么会有这么会用极简美术做叙事解谜的。
A cute platformer.
Classic
nice game, unfortunately the narrator is british.
awesome and smooth platforming (and puzzling)
Indeed, this game did not age well. Also, its story is not clear and enjoyable and there's not a solid connection between it and gameplay.
Best part of all that was the British gentleman speaking with such peculiar accent.
Giving it a 3/5
It's a charming game, but there's a bug that sometimes shows on up level 3.9 that softlocks me from the rest of the level. I don't really have the motivation to replay this level multiple times while hoping I don't get the bug AND also trying not to die (because there's no checkpoints at that level) so yeah I think ima stop here for now.
I'm twelve years late but yeah it's a solid game. Harder than I expected though I think the bigger problem is that there are occasional extremely precise jump levels scattered throughout rather than having a ramping difficulty curve. Despite that, it's a fun little puzzle platformer with a neat story and solid mechanics. Definitely worth the $2 I spent on it.
square or rectangle go jump or boing but where are the trapezoids
it was a game
A beautiful game that shows what you can do with minimal art. The different personalities of the rectangles and the great narrative that accompanies the game, make it very compelling. Very well designed puzzles, that gradually increase in difficulty.
Totally recommend it if you like casual puzzle platformers. Hardcore puzzle solvers who take pleasure from struggling for hours before finding a solution, will probably find this game too easy.
Cute little game!
Took me forever to truly play it, but when I did I found a puzzle game with nice graphics, music and a great narrator.
The "story" kind of loses it track I think and ends a bit abruptly which is a shame.
Definitely a recommendation though, it is a very unique game indeed.
good :)
Want to develop an attachment to rectangles? Cause you're gonna
A bit short, but good atmosphere and story
How to transform a game of a few rectangles into a superb story where action and reflection serve as the narrator.
The controls can be perfected and sometimes become a little frustrating.
But the game isn't very difficult or lengthy, and after a few tries and, above all, a bit of composure, you'll be able to make your way through the game without getting bogged down.
All in all, a very good game!
So glad to learn I'm not the only one who gets attached to little abstract shapes in puzzle games and gives them names.
I've been struggling a lot and finding it increasingly difficult to approach games these days and it's really gotten me down for quite a while now. This has truly been a wonderful reprieve! The music is instantly fun and magnetic in the way it invites my attention. The design is seamless while communicating both a playful, colorful vibe while contrasting that with bleak and even dystopian undertones. TWA is a timeless work of art and masterpiece in its own right and it never stops being fun.
Really fun game with a fun premise. It is really cool seeing how all of the characters interact when it comes to platforming. The story was really well put together and all the characters had super unique personalities that I felt really well explored the whole space of possible emotions when one is in that sort of situation
Very primitive game with the worst controls I have ever seen in platformers.
Puzzles are extremely simple, but it took eternity to navigate all the characters to the exit.
It seems talking rectangles were enough to impress people back in 2012.
A puzzle game that does a lot narratively with very little. This is part of the first wave of big indie games. I think it's worth playing even today.
Incredible Game. Would absolutely recommend this game as a great storyteller in a game so simple as platforming.
This game made me feel things I did not expect to feel coming into a block platforming game. It told stories of multiple characters in a way I cannot describe with words. Absolutely would recommend playing. The soundtrack is beautiful and compliments the story told. RIP Benjamin.
this game made me nostalgic for post-rock
has little other values other than achievements/cards/game count etc
Crying at rectangles and squares trying to fight for a better world and still the only bithell game with jumping so obviously the only perfect game made by bithell studios
not quite done with it, but it's really an amazing game not just about the jumps or the cubes, definitly worth a try
Love this puzzle game! Soundtrack is good and narration is the only reason I play with the game sound on! Recommend if you like casual puzzles games
First things first, game has a good concept and executed the display of the story's characters personalities with how they behave in the game. its a very novel and charming experience.
However, there are a couple flaws i had with it:
1. The game crashed 3 times on startup, once needing to be alt f4ed to close due to the window almost entirely disappearing. likely due to the game not being optimized to be run at 720p if i had to guess.
2. For being a game thats not graphically intensive, the game chugged at about 10fps pretty consistently near the end. This is not normal for my rig
3. The BGM wouldnt cut out between stages, leading to a stacking cacophony of chaotic noise after i finally realized what was actually happening, ended up playing the game to spotify lofi rather than exit to the menu after every story beat.
4. The game would kinda "chirp" in an abrupt way that sounded unintentional at the end of each stage, leading to the vfx needing to be almost turned down. I think there may have been a voice line meant to go between stages, but all i ever heard was the start of the line then it trying to replay like 4 times leading to the sound of a man practically gargling between stages
5. The controls seemed laggy (may be due to prior fps issues), which is pretty frustrating when the game has such strict jump timing (no coyote time)
6. The ending is super repetitive, literally replaying the same level 5 times... on multiple levels
I want to like this game with the praise ive heard, but its currently something i cant reccomend
Narrador legal
Fun little game! Reminds me of cats are liquid, but i feel like this is a way more well executed concept
2.5h for 100% completion
very sigma, much like
Awesome game super interesting
this game kinda sucks.
and it sucks even more that i cant think of any better way to critique it.
Very charming low-poly adventure. You won't regret giving it a shot.
Amazing game! Great sound track and story with both some laughs and tears. Puzzles and mechanics are really fun and the platforming isn't too difficult. Only downside is the playing time, it took me about 3 hours to complete the game with all of the achievements so I would have liked to have had some more levels to play through.
Isn’t it odd how a puzzle-platformer where all you do is move rectangles can be so unique? This game sports a fantastic score, a superb narrator, a clean art style, on top of an interesting & thoughtful story, with fun gameplay to boot.
Thomas Was Alone is an excellent little puzzle platformer with loads of personality. The narration is great with some funny moments and the music is very soothing. Definitely worth a play.
I can't say anything that hasn't already been said in support of this game. It had a great story, the voice narration was a compelling element, the gameplay was challenging but not 'nightmare' difficulty. In all, the very model of a solid, well-executed game concept worth every bit of whatever you pay for it.
Never has a game made me feel things about shapes. The story is wonderful, this is 100% a comfort game of mine, I always come back to it when I'm feeling down. 10/10
Truly a classic. Love the sound, and challenge. My daughter loved playing this also. Also, like Tetris, this game may make you smarter. Amazing. Can't believe only one person made this game.
Fun puzzle platformer with a bit of funny writing.
This game is perfect, well sorta the only thing I don't like is level 4.8, the wall of spikes is to fast, if this review were on a thing other than steam the rating would be 9.5967354781/10.00.
This is a cute platformer that you will beat in an afternoon that will make you laugh and maybe even feel something. Its a phenomenal game that i cannot recommend enough.
Simply Brilliant. Never thought a bunch of rectangles and squares could have so much personality. Excellent narration and writing. Puzzles were neatly designed too. Only chore was switching between shapes. Other than that outstanding game
An amazing story, one that might make people cry, all over some quadrilaterals - love it.
Great game. Narration and dialogue is great. Puzzles are pretty decent for the most part
