About the Game
Proteus is a game about exploration and immersion in a dream-like island world where the soundtrack to your play is created by your surroundings. Played in first-person, the primary means of interaction is simply your presence in the world and how you observe it. The procedurally generated islands are home to creatures natural and imagined, tranquil valleys and ruins with magical properties.Key Features:
- Meditative play: the responsive world and lack of any text or hints distils an essence of curious, investigative play, and rewards patience and immersion.
- Dynamic soundtrack composed by award-winning musician David Kanaga follows the mood of the world and will appeal to fans of Boards of Canada, Brian Eno.
- A distinctive 2D-but-3D graphical style with wild shifting palettes that sits somewhere between 8-bit videogames and early 20th century modernist painting.
- Islands are uniquely generated every time, and although it's theoretically possible to see everything in one playthrough, no-one ever does.
- Built-in "postcard" function encodes world data into each screenshot, allowing islands and discoveries to be saved and shared.

Very calming game :3
TL,DR;
VERY cool and quite relaxing, not to mention beautiful to look at IMHO. Gives me the same vibes as an Atari game, if it was a lucid dream. Definitely worth 10 bucks IMHO.
You can't really make an objective review of a piece of art of any kind. Especially for something like this. Proteus is technically a 'game' in that it's on steam, has controls, runs on PC and has unlockables, but in a deeper sense (for me) it was/is more like going back to the feeling of what it was like to be 5, collecting bugs and rocks n shit and enjoying the cool sounds and colors of the world around you. Kind of like being high w friends. Comfortable, easygoing, and a bit sluggish.
Then, towards the end of the day/night cycle, you're guided towards a rock circle, you're whisked away, and the world changes. The island generated by the game goes through one of each of the 4 seasons, with a day and night cycle for each, with certain triggers setting of changes in visuals, music, and such. Some of them are tied to landmarks, some aren't.
You aren't told anything and are entirely free to wander around figuring it out and taking it all in for yourself, letting your mind go monkey mode and running around bumping into things while enjoying fun sounds and colors.
By the way, the Boards of Canada/Eno influence on the music is very palpable. David Kanaga makes weird ass shit in a weird ass way, musically, but here? the soundtrack absolutely fucking shines.
I'm not going to talk about the ending much because it's equal parts annoying and drawn out and kind of transcendental/metaphoric. The art snob asswipe in me wants to be like 'it's like a representation for death and finality, or like one of waking up from a dream", but the ADHD riddled gamer in me wants to go "this shit sucks let me chase more bees around". Thankfully, after 1 round through, you get to fiddle a bit with how crazy the world gen gets and extend the amount of time you get to vibe.
9/10 A welcome break from all the gunfire in most of the other games i play lol
frankly, i got this in lieu of a textbook for a ludomusicology course. it's more of a walking simulator with zero objectives... except maybe make "music" by "walking" past in-game objects. i can see why ludology academics salivate over this game's contribution to emergent gameplay, but i'm not quite sure if i can call this a "game"... more of an interactive artwork? a virtual exhibition not dissimilar to dc's artechouse, perhaps?
this is the best game ever made
After my first playthrough I find myself struggling for words. I feel liberated and happy, but at the same time sad because I didn't want to leave. I know I will go back and experience it all again: the rhythm of days and nights and seasons. The creatures of the island. The ever changing soundscapes. Walking through the woods. Sitting at the shore watching the sunset. Not wanting to leave...
I still love this game all these years later.
Almost 12 years on and this is still one of the most calming, meditative pieces of interactive media I've found.
Just pulled it back up on a whim (after seeing the "Proteus gang" graffiti in Paradise Marsh, actually) and yep, it's still a magical little work of art.
I bought this game back when I was doing my A Levels, and I'm convinced it's the thing that kept me sane. Super pretty & relaxing little game where the only point is to explore. The dynamic music is so beautiful & subtle in the way it changes, really well done. The only piece I don't like so much is the one that occurs near forts. Maybe not a game for everyone, but you'll enjoy if you love to explore an environment :)
Beautiful, haunting, simple. This game pairs nicely with morning coffee, or may be a nice way to unwind after a stressful day. The game demands nothing but your input. You walk around, enjoy the soundscapes, and see what happens. Strongly recommend.
chilling
If you like LSD check this out.
This game is simple and relaxing, great way to unwind.
If I listen, I can hear the island say "I love you too."
Proteus rests very near and dear to my heart.
This kind of contemplative experience isn't for everyone.
If you think it may be, please give it a try.
its beautiful, and feels very simple. it a great base game to refer to when trying to create serene moments in your own art. very good, buy now.
a valued walk
This is probably the first game that showed me that a beautiful experience with minimal interactivity can be a wonderful game.
A peaceful moment
Take my advice: Allow yourself to play this game once a week. Most weeks have a bad day, so whenever you hit your bad day, make yourself play this to completion. Full completion takes ~30 minutes and is different every time. I also advise good headphones, max volume, and a dark & distraction free environment.
I've had multiple times over the years (only just realized it was on Steam) where I desperately needed reflection, and this game provides such an amazing space for it. You get lost in every season, finding new little details each time you explore the island it creates for you. I've had conflicts where I'm caught up in the moment and steaming, only to come back to this game and genuinely reflect and look at whatever issues you have from different angles.
Please play this. I know many have passed harsh judgement on it over the years for lacking any traditional gameplay, but give it a chance. This isn't a game for when you're bored, it's a game for when you're feeling nostalgic at 1am because work has you on mandatory overtime and you just need to get away from it all.
Proteus is one of those things you pick up again once in a blue moon. A few months, a few years, however long. It's both calming and interesting, visually and aurally.
It's more of a digital place, than a game. It's a wonderful space to explore and roam in. It is an ancient digital garden for you to relax in.
It will last as long as it is welcome. Take all the time you need to wonder and explore and think.
Few other pieces of media offer similar experiences. Even fewer still are as nice to come back to a second or third time as they are the first.
