Total disaster from start to end.
This one hits the nostalgia, even though the game isn't that old. The story and the atmosphere are spot on, like a predictable 80's scifi movie. The gameplay isn't very fast-paced, so you need to take things slow. But you probably know the drill: expand, build ships, research bigger ships, build bigger ships, attack the enemy.
A terrific game in the grand Homeworld tradition with an interesting story. However some levels are fiendishly hard. Don't be afraid of changing it to easy mode in order to help increase your chances of living through the first ten minutes of overwhelming forces. Remember knocking out their mining stations will remove their advantage. Good luck.
It's an ok game with some interesting concepts like the multi-system battles. It's like a mini-grand scale strategy game.
Sci-fi fans will love this, as it uses some of the usual tropes with aliens, betrayals and planetary invasions.
Having fun with it in 2022.
Despite its fairly outdated graphics, it's actually not that bad. It's a bit slow, but it plays good, with a simple UI and well balanced units.
The storyline is a typical sci-fi tale of domination over the universe, with a few twists that aren't very twisty in 2023, but hell. As a straightforward RTS game, it may be unfairly criticized, but it is definitely worth a try. If you're a fan of sci-fi, it's worth considering giving this game a shot, despite its limitations, as it provides decent gameplay for its price.
This is actually a nice game.
The action is spread throughout different levels that represent action in different systems. You have to extract resources, build your base and forces and attack the enemy. It's almost like a RTS, but not quite. There's usually some pressure at the start of the most advanced levels, and huge battles near the end, when you finally overcome the enemy.
Feels old, but that kind of adds to the charm.
It's slow and involves a lot of grind. Especially as the game progresses and the levels grow larger.
But it's an overall nice strategy game with a cool feature, the action in different systems at the same time. Engagements get really big and nasty.
It's nice.
A space opera strategy game from the golden years of the early 2010s, when there were plenty of options to choose from.
There aren't much these days, but we can always revisit some classics.
This one is a bit rough around the edges, but it's solid and fun to play. It has slow buildups where you have to grow your forces while keeping the enemies at bay, but then it gets intense when you gather a large fleet. You might get the upper hand, but you can lose everything quickly, if another enemy battlegroup arrives in the system. Ships jump from system to system, and have to recharge the engines before jumping again.
Multiplayer is dead of course, but it has a lengthy campaign and skirmish battles against cpu.
This one is a tough one to rate. But in 2019 the game got a large patch that fixed a lot of the reasons people gave it a thumbs down. The game is stable now and no longer requires a registration. Is it worth $15? No. I think if the dev lowered it to $5 he'd probably make a lot more money.
The story is not original, pretty much follows the exact storyline and game mechanics as Haegemonia. Though, I will say Gemini Wars was a little easier to get into. Both games involve wars between humans in space and having to unite to combat an alien terror. Pretty much the same story as Descent Freespace or dozens of other games, movies, TV shows. It's a well-used trope and Gemini Wars didn't bring anything new to it, except maybe a small twist at the end which sets up a DLC or sequel that'll never come. I like this trope though, it's one of my favorites. But the alien threat never felt mysterious and never felt personified making it kind of meh.
The UI is workable. My biggest complaint is camera angels. Maybe I just missed it, but I couldn't figure out how to rotate the camera. The second to last mission was definitely the worst with it almost impossible to see things correctly with only being maybe 15 degrees above the plane it was hard to click on the right objects.
The unit shaking is still there after the 2019 patch but not as much. I noticed it only a few times. Often though units would warp to the wrong point on the map. I can't tell you how many times I lost a ship because it went to the wrong warp point. Unit building allows a queue of 10 units, which is okay, but you have to manually find the structure to build more and when the maps began to take on multiple systems it got difficult to do so in a hurry. The last level for some reason many of the mining sectors I couldn't build mining facilities on, not sure what was up with that. Also, at least two of the achievements are bugged.
Overall a fun little campaign. Some UI issues detracted from the game. Graphics it's about what you'd expect for a 2012 indie game, which is fine because space with ships gives you more to work with. Unit roster is fine. There's really no reason to build frigates but destroyers, cruisers, battleships, and carriers each have a distinct role-- if there was a formations button I'd have built smaller missile frigates but they just raced ahead to die too much.
Gemini Wars is a good game with a solid science-fiction story. It doesn't deserve the bad rating. I tested this game in 2012 and completed the campaign back then. Now, about 10 years later, i am playing the full campaign again. There are some minor bugs in the game but none that prevent me from finishing the game. Some of the smaller bugs are solved by loading a save of the current game. Most of the negative reviews are on the drm (which was terrible but removed) and the slow pacing (but pressing B speeds up the game 4x when not in battle).
I like that you don't have to restart searching everything during the campaign. Technology you already researched in a previous mission is still available. My favourite parts are the briefings, the different videos and the variety of the missions. Game has been done by a small team (indie game). I wish Sins of a Solar Empire had a campaign like this one.
I am having fun with this game again. Thanks Camel101.
Ships are slow and space is huge.
While realistic, this results in slow burner battles.
This isn't particularly bad, especially if you like to slowly build your forces and plan your attack plan.
But no 10 / 15 minute matches here. Every battle builds up to a huge confrontation here.
I hate this game, because I could have spent those five hours playing something fun. This game isn't fun.
The screenshots and the trailer will show you big ships and big fleets and big battles, trying to make you think that's what this game is about. They're lying. This game is about waiting for your resource counter to uptick just enough to build another tiny ship that will ignore group move orders to go check out some incredibly interesting space dust.
About 80% of my time spent on this game was spent just waiting for the resource counter to uptick to the point where I could afford another basic unit. That wait time might have been tolerable if they'd included a variable game speed option. They didn't.
There was a lot more playtesting needed here, because there's something very wrong with the basic setup. It's either that ships are too expensive, or resources just take too long to gather. Given the relative fragility of most units and the intolerable wait times between being able to build stations as well, I suspect it's actually both.
TL;DR: Don't buy this game. Don't even buy it on sale. Just ignore it and look for something else.
I don't remember playing this game the 8.7 hrs that I have on record. This is why I recently downloaded it to check it out.. maybe bring back some pleasant memories or something.. I was instantly reminded about the Title menu registration issue. I can't recommend a game what makes it an issue to actually play it. Some research has shown that this has been an issue since '12.
My opinion: Don' do 'ih.
Through it's ingame screenshots, Gemini Wars certainly sold the idea to me of an exciting, space themed RTS. However, when getting into the game, I was sorely dissapointed and after 20 minutes of play decided I couldn't be bothered to continue, closed and uninstalled.
Problems that stick out like a sore thumb with this game are as follows:
- Dull voice acting.
- Looped soundtrack.
- Uninspiring gameplay.
Real shame.
Very basic game for a 4x RTS. Way too basic.
The User interface is clunky at best. Theres no way to build units from a base structure except by zooming in to said structure and building it. Takes precious time, and is difficult to do if the building is surrounded by swarms of your own ships. No shortcut to select it, no empire tree or similar manager.
No hotkeys whatsoever and no settings for controls.
This is in space. SPACE. Despite that, unit maneuver are severely limited since there seem to be only two levels they can fly in. They cannot really fly over each other. Yes, this means that in a space game, you're restricted to x-y movement. No z-axis movement. It is odd to see that cruiser class ships are able to turn around on a dime in a short span of time... then not be able to move becuase of his two wingmen. Then all three of them try to figure out how to move for the next 30 seconds straight.
Ship models are basically bricks with different lengths and very low detail. From what I've seen so far, most ships do not even have more than one weapon system (ie all the firepower from a destroyer comes from a SINGLE cannon).
Everything in the game screams overly simplistic. From the combat mechanics to the resource mechanics, to the user interface and the graphics (I'm usually not too concerned about graphics if the game is good, but on max graphics, weapon projectiles are VERY low resolution TEXTURES. COME ON. Homeworld 1 in 1998 had better projectiles with higher resolutions. For the Homeworld fans: One of the projectiles looks exactly like an energy weapon projectile from Homeworld Cataclysm, but lower resolution. This is 2012, not 1998).
As a long time fan of Homeworld, Sins of a Solar Empire and the space RTS genre in general, I cannot really recommend this game unless you enter with rock bottom expectations. Anything higher and you will be dissappointed. I didn't even have any expectations and then it disappointed me.
Risk it only if its on sale. Thats luckily how I got it, so it wasn't too much of a waste.
PS: The metacritic score for this game is 53. There's a reason for that, too bad I didn't listen.
I'd like to post a review, but I can't play it. Apparently, a very common problem with this game is that it won't let you register the CD-key. You have to register an account with the developer (even if you just wanna try the single player campaign), and the registration system is broken. It seems you can fix it by contacting support by email, but let's be honest: If you can't even get past the main menu without contacting support because of a bug that is still around after more than two years, is it really worth the effort? I think not.
TL;DR
This is broken. Don't waste your money.
Game requires a username and password everytime you play even when your not online. Also password recovery is a poorly designed system. While gameplay is good for an indie game it is not worth even a small amount of money considering the number of restrictions the creators put on the game. When games use too much DRM like this you basically buy the game to not play it.
While an entertaining premise the gameplay itself is very slow. The ui is unclear and button placements are hard to find and not intuitive at all. For example career mission one takes far too long to get going and when i found out i could build new ships at a nearby military station i self destructed it and failed the mission (the self destruct button is above the build button and has no "are you sure" warning at all. 2/10 would not recommend. Too bad really, could have been an awesome game.
Have you played great space games like Endless Space or Sins of a Solar Empire? Looking for another space game to help you get your epic sci-fi fix? Perhaps you are looking for a nice space game to give to your friends or family as a gift. Well DON'T look here. Simple and sweet, this game is a cash cow whose sole function is to con unsuspecting consumers looking for good space games out of their hard-earned money. I have never seen a game with so little redeeming qualities before i was burden with this game's prescence. Firstly, this game has all of the major mechanics of Sins of a Solar Empire, but it fails to take any of its finess. I literally couldn't care less about either of the factions if I tried. The game's interface was complex to the point that it gets in the way of the gameplay. there was very little unit and defense diversity and even that was plagued with rediculous prerequisite and resource costs. What I'm trying to say is that this game is a waste of everyone's time. But then again, that is what cash cows are meant to do: Steal away your precious money and time
This game is passable a passable RTS in space; there's just not enough here to keep me interested for long.
Graphics are meh, strategy is so so, and the story is cliche. Manuevering your ships for that perfect ambush can be fun for a while.
Get it on discount, and it might keep you occupied for a night or two.
Honestly its worth buying on sale only. I can see what they were trying to do with the game. But it falls short compared to other games in the genre. Boring missions, pisspoor voice acting, and an annoyingly long tutorial period of around 3-5 missions. I have not and will not finish this game. In the end interesting story but poor implimentation. 4/10 Not Recommended
This game is extremely glitchy. Coming from someone who grew up playing Sins of A Solar Empire, Gemini Wars is essentially the same thing, with less smoother combat, and extremely unresponsive UI controls. In addition, the graphical design of the spaceships and buildings themselves are clearly composed of simple polygons and geometric vectors. I feel that this game is far from what description and videos say it is.
If you want a good space RTS game, this is definitely not the game to get. If anything, Sins of A Solar Empire is infinitely better.
This game feels like it is still in beta with all the glitches.
Pros:
Good concept. I enjoy how quickly bases can be built if you have the resources which makes comebacks not entirely out of the picture. Easy to pick up.
Cons:
Ships will shake violently when trying to move and sometimes won't even move when part of a large selected group. AI is horrible for skirmishes. I played a skirmish where the AI player sent its starting construction ship to where I was building my fleet about 5 minutes into the game and it was destroyed easily ending the game.
Gameplay mostly involves waiting around for resources and ships to build up while the AI does nothing to stop you and then easily winning, but if you move into their space too early they send massivly overpowered waves to crush you.
Full of glitches that simply freeze the game and make you have to re-launch. Research points are hard to come by at first, but then there isn't enough to research and you have an abundance of unuseable points.
If you can deal with all that is wrong with this game or if any patches come out to fix the many problems, then this is a decent game.
