Probably one of the worst games I've ever played in the genre of Hack n' Slash RPG style games and this is coming from someone who loves that type of game.
and the 30FPS Lock isn't even the worst of it!
PROS
1, The Combat
The combat is slower and a bit more methodical than other Hack n' Slash games which is a nice change of pace and is refreshing. However this is both a pro and a con because of always having to fight more than one enemy. Gank fights are absolutely terrible in this game.
The different combat moves you eventually get actually do help quite a lot against the different enemies in the game and aren't completely useless which is nice.
2. Simple Achievements and No Achievements or anything in the game that requires any Grinding/Luck
I like to try and 100% most games i play, so i appreciate there not being any achievement that takes forever to get or any achievement that's complex. There is also no leveling your Character or Weapon, so no wasted time grinding for levels. At the time of review i have 16.6 hours and 45 of the 50 achievements so not too bad getting 100%.
CONS
1. No Run or Sprint
One thing that annoyed me a lot in the game was not being able to sprint. Instead of running or walking, you are consistently doing a slight jog which is very slow. There are also no Mounts or anything so it becomes a slog having to travel on foot when I'm not able to Fast Travel.
2. The problem with freeing the locked up Vikings in encampments.
One thing you spend most of your time doing in this game is going to different encampments over the 3 different worlds and freeing friendly Vikings that, after being freed, will help you fight the Legion that was keeping them imprisoned there.
A huge problem with this part of the game IMO, is that you end up having to solo kill most of the enemies in the camps before actually being able to free the Vikings to help you out. This a problem because whats the point of freeing the vikings to help me fight the enemies when I've already killed 90% of them in the camp by myself? Also doesn't help that each camp has a million enemies that want to attack you at once as soon as your spotted, so having no help from the Vikings just sucks.
Stealth unlocking the imprisoned vikings doesn't work 90% of the time either, as the game usually has 5-6 Armored Shield Legion enemies guarding the Vikings. The amount of enemies and the amount of Shielded enemies in the camps could've been because of Hard Mode, I'm not sure. Still absurd though.
3. The amount of times you fight a horde of enemies at one time is insane.
I'm not sure why so many encounters in this game have you fighting so many different types of enemies at once. The games slower combat works pretty well for 1v1s, 1v2s and 1v3s but it makes it very difficult to 1v6, 1v7, 1v10 etc a bunch of enemies, ESPECIALLY the Armored Shield Legion later in the game. (if you've played the game you know what i mean)
even in the Final Battles of each world, you end getting no help from the Vikings when trying to make it to the Shaman while you get swung on by 50 guys at once because the Vikings just stay in pretty much one spot, leaving you alone to go fight a bunch of enemies by yourself. The getting swung on by 50 guys isn't really an exaggeration either, It is just that bad in the final fights. Could also be because of Hard Mode.
but to be fair, if these devs definition of hard mode is to just spam more enemies at you (which the game and combat are clearly not designed for) is it really a good Hard Mode?
I could probably go more on about what i don't like about this game but I'll stop there. I think everyone who's reviewing this game positively and calling it "Old but Gold!" and a "perfect game" are just heavily blinded by nostalgia. The game is far from perfect and there's a lot that should've been done different.
Overall i give it like a 4 or 5 out of 10. Maybe would recommend getting on sale, but only if you really want to play it. Personally i would just go play a different game that has the same formula done way better.

Its okay, its not bad, but be prepared for choppiness, not just with your axe, but your framerate. Just go grab Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders. You'll thank me, they did it better 4 years earlier and on an older generation system lol

Everything is great about this game even if it gets repetitive, the combat makes this game so epic and this is a childhood favourite. I am so happy i can play this game it is worth it.

30FPS lock, controller support is janky at best. it supports modern resolutions which is neat but definitely better games to play out there.
