It's alright but it definitely does not hold up. A spate of bugs and poor optimization are what ruin it for me.
no hitmarkers or hitsounds, but still just about the most clear and satisfying shooting feedback in any game i can name. shit exploding into glass shards, bloodsplatters, sparks and concrete chunks when shot should be standard industry practice.
also, be sure to install the DirectInput FPS Fix.
This is the single greatest horror fps ever made and if you don’t play it you might start seeing a creepy little ghost girl in your dreams
The game which started it all:
F.E.AR. is such a cult-classic, amazingly freakish title. It’s one of those things you don’t forget playing, the experience sticks with you for a long time afterwards. I bought all of them in 2015 and never got around to beating it until a couple of years ago. This is outstanding and a must-have for everyone into the genre of games which make the mind race at 100 miles an hour. Every loading screen provides elaborate information (lore) about the goal in mind for each mission and what the objectives are within the level. It’s up to you to establish the plan of how you’re going to handle progressing and deal with the paranormal encounters as and when they come. Using the crafty weapons placed inside the facility, every gun handles the ever-changing situations differently and gives the player a needed advantage. There are countless twists and scares, even having a general idea of how you’re going to get to the next stage can still go completely off the rails. The unexpected surprises to behold throughout this game made for a lot of talks in its time, hence the “F— Everything And Run” being incorporated into the acronym of the game’s title by so many.
Extraction Point:
An addition to the franchise which is good, action-packed fun. When it came to encounters and events, it had a unique approach in contrast to its predecessor. It leaves the player on edge as there are much more tense moments to wonder if you’ll actually survive the next shootout and onset of enemies. Upping the difficulty changes it so that you find minimal supplies and less boosts, making for a rewarding and fun challenge. It teaches to stockpile supplies; not blow through all the health kits after taking bullets and to save the bigger guns for enemies requiring higher damage. The level design also has alternative takes, opposed to having an office or agency style throughout the majority of the game. The downsides are that FPS drops occurred in specific areas of levels, no matter how the graphic settings are. Frame stuttering often happens with these games due to age, an older computer would likely smoothen them out. You may want to check the forums if you have a larger resolution monitor, since you need to edit the game files to calibrate the display size as well. Despite the steps to get this running at a playable configuration, it’s overall worth the play through.
Lastly, Perseus Mandate:
Another must-play expansion of the game; the fear factor is solid, it does not rely on jump-scares and pop-ups to freak the living daylights out of you. This is from when good, solid things lurking in the shadows truly GOT YOU. Before the days of many games relying on cheap quick-scares came to fruition, this broke ground and introduced another set of original and new ideas from its nexus. Being more optimized than Extraction Point, it runs about as smooth as the first game. Perseus Mandate gives a slow burn of a tense, almost anxiety-inducing play through which is harder to come by anymore. This was the one which made me really feel (and probably look) like I actually just saw a ghost, as it really cranked up the psychological thrills and mind-games. Give this a go and you will see what runs amok, it might be you next.
Amazing game. Satisfying Gun play (and so is the gore), the horror is meh, Lots of action.
Graphics are impressive for 2005, lots of dynamic shadows, post process effects and lights.
If you're gona play this, make sure to download EchoPatch and DirectInput FPS Fix. Otherwise the game will run like 5x times worse and the physics will glitch out.
At the current price, worth the purchase. A bit overly long, but enjoyable part of gaming shooter history. Incomprehensible but ignore-able story, but the shootouts are pretty epic. I played on the hardest difficulty, which was probably a little bit more challenging then was optimal, but gives the AI a good opportunity to shine and try and flank you. An interesting 10 hours. Cautious recommend.
what a terrible port...can't play for more than ten minutes without the game becoming unoptimized. follow guides to fix these issues and those don't work as intended anymore. it's almost as if they just released the base game and didn't update it for modern systems(which is exactly what they did).
Slick shooting, excellent gameplay loop, endlessly addicting play style. The maps are always unique and never feel boring or repetitive. Solid game design in every way that a shooter should be. I wish more games were as smooth running as this one!
True Masterpiece, A 2005 Game And This Much Good Story and Art, I Love Everything about it, Definitely Recommended, A Solid 9.7/10 ( I was Expecting some great laser gun or some power vs that main villain guy but turns out he just died like a cockroach ) otherwise a banger !!!
After so many years this game is truly amazing, every detail, game play, sound, music choices, AI of bots, gun sounds encounters story line everything. I cannot get enough of it! It is well worth the try if you have a yearning to play a single player game this is really an awesome experience. I deeply wish to see this game remade and or expanded on, Final critique is the "expansions" are ok .... I guess the second and third fear was an amazing disappointment. But yeah F.E.A.R 10/10 chefs kiss.
I feel like fps ai opponents were lobotomized after this game and its expansions came out. That's beside the point, though: Interesting story, tough but fair enemies, hilarious glitches, and bullet time better than Max Payne 1. Accidentally crucified a guy with the nail gun, that was neat and I'll never get it to happen again. Hit another clone in the head with a nail-gun bolt and he screamed in agony while the game glitched out and turned him into Stretch-Armstrong and flung him all around the room then sucked him through a small window like air through a pinhole in a space shuttle. If there is an afterlife I hope it's not as a clone in this game.
the ai still holds up 20 years later im suprised no other triple a game can replicate this ai
W game
>be me
>one shot at life
>be replica soldier
>am forced to see genetically identical clones of myself get butchered by one guy until he finally gets to me
>he wheel kicks me to death
runs like shit on modern hardware, tried several patches and nothing has fixed the fps issue, still getting 15fps despite having patches and a quality pc. Games in this state should not be sold on steam without fixes
Before I get started: huge shout-out to the EchoPatch that made this 20 year old game run perfectly on modern hardware - I experienced absolutely no issues with this game that is known to have a lot of problems above 30FPS and on higher resolutions.
This is a really great FPS that unfortunately gets kinda marred by focussing too much on its so-so story, and poorly aged horror segments.
The shooting though, oh boy! Everyone always goes on about the AI in this game, and for very good reason; the enemy AI in this game is awesome! Very regularly during gunfights I'd find myself going to look for a new angle only to find a bad guy already behind me looking for a flank. I did find the game a little easy at first on the Normal difficulty, but after cranking it up to Hard it became much more challenging (but never unfair).
For the time, this game looks amazing; the lighting (and deliberate lack of in some areas) particularly stands out as very very impressive for 2005. The physics objects also really go a long way into making the gunfights feel scrappy and intense - bullets leave big plumes of dust where they hit; electronics explode into a flash of sparks and pieces of plastic; all the while all the guns feel very strong and weighty, with big amounts of recoil forcing you to control your bursts.
As much as I didn't like the horror stuff, it can't be denied that everything in this game feels very intentional - exploration is tense and fights are frantic. The story is uninteresting, which does unfortunately heavily hamper the final 2 missions, but overall this game is great fun.
One of the greats in singleplayer FPS games. The combat and the AI are just so damn fun to fight. They often call out what they are doing, thinking, etc. It's very tense to hear the enemy is trying to flank you or flush you out.
FEAR is a pretty simple game, but it is fun and I like the atmosphere a lot. The level design never had me lost, which I personally consider a positive. The story won't blow you away and a lot of information is delivered through answer phone messages which require you to stay very near to listen to. One mission in particular is packed with blinking phones and I was getting a little bit impatient. But overall it is a fun if somewhat brief package.
I played on the second highest difficulty with minimal issue, so if you are a seasoned gamer I'd probably recommend playing on the highest difficulty.
I had to install a single mod to make the game run correctly at 120fps - DirectInput FPS fix, which is a simple .dll which you drop into the games directory. After which I played from start to finish with no crashes, bugs or graphical errors.
Great game, as good as i remembered. Only issue is it struggles to run on current systems. Has to be restarted every 20 minutes or so to stop it from lagging non-stop. Still worth it though!
GOAT shooter, I replay it every few years and always a good time. Easily worth the few quid I spent on it. Extraction point is good as well, 2nd expansion not so much.
An Old but Gold Horror FPS.
F.E.A.R. has always been a title that i had in my mind, it's mechanics and gameplay are still very good even after so many years. When it comes to gameplay, Enemy AI is competent and fun to play against but after many hours they can get predictable, Shooting feels smooth and responsive, Can't say the same for the melee in this game, It always felt weird to me start to finish. As for the horror aspect of this game, It gets old fairly quick (Mainly the jumpscares) but it can be enjoyable at times, a little silly in some specific cases. There is also DLC with extra missions that you can try if you feel like you need more F.E.A.R., Honestly i had a lot of fun staying up all night to finish it.
If you want to give this game a try be aware that you need to mod it. Since this is an old game, some things might not work with modern hardware. I got it set up in no time so it shouldn't be complicated, Be sure to check some Guides if you are having issues.
Good game considering how old it is. Simple corridor shooter kind of like Quake 4 but with creepy vibes. The negatives include few enemy types, not enough instances to use the more explosive weapons, few environment types and kind of boring story and I did not like the scary girl nonsense. Good simple shooter though and worth the purchase especially how old it is.
this game holds up in a tremendous way, still the best bullet time of any game ever, basically rainbow six if you were a super soldier.
You NEED the EchoPatch for this, and i recommend you run the game at 60fps as the physics was tuned for that framerate and using the physics stabilizer makes the bodies too heavy imo.
The original.
I dont have enough energy to write all my praises for this game. It's such a unique FPS title that it makes planning ambushes as a one man army really fun.
This game is an amazing blend of action with a bit of horror to keep you on your toes, the games twist is given to you right at the start but you don't have the context to know what it means until it ties together in the end. The game's combat and gun play are excellent and the shotgun stands out with is punchy blast that turns enemies into a red mist when hit point blank or exploding them into chunks of flesh. Overall this game is a great choice to pick up if your looking for a single player action shooter.
Golden age of gaming, WB made a mistake leaving this IP to just sit idle.
So much ppl want more of it and its just such a great game with all you need for a FPS and horror combo.
Great game, great graphics for that time. I remember watching my dad play it, to me it was so scary. It is so nostalgic playing it these days. Back in the time, developers didnt care so much about money, they cared about the product. Sorry for bad english.

Great
Summary
Fear is great. It is an absolute blast with some amazing NPC design that I want so very badly in modern FPSs. There's so many cool things about this experience, from bullet time, to dynamic NPC AIs that strategize together. There's very little wrong with this game--other than an eye-rolling story--but overall, I cannot recommend this enough for fans of old school FPSs. It's so fun.
F.E.A.R. is truly awesome with it slow-motion ability and it's incredibly creepy sequences and story line. If you haven't played it yet, you're missing out.
Game still holds well and the combat still great :) and if you love first person shooter you'll love this game
The game is old but still scary if you are alone.
+Works great on the deck and ally x.
+Enemies are smart and they keep looking for you
-Even on lower levels the enemies seem to have 95% accuracy. Not bad but all they need is for you to be in their area of view to hit scan you in the head if you come up for like 2 seconds. Now that I think about it.. I mean they are highly trained military units.
-The environments are kinda dull.
Otherwise this is a great game with graphics that are good for todays standards.
The lingering dread of a classic Japanese horror flick combined with the grounded power fantasy of half-life. FEAR is its own beast. Monolith deserved better.
I was half expecting the game to be a fully horror-focused FPS but instead it turns out to be a very fun shooter all around. The AI in this game is superb, their positioning and all, there were so many times when they actually tricked me with their positionings and surprising me. The slow-mo feels brilliant too. Not only the AI is great, their response to gunwounds feels like something that should've been a standard in future video games. They actually get flinched corresponding to the gunwound location and you can actually abuse this to your advantage in higher difficulties.
The map, despite being seemingly static, tricks the player well into thinking how destructive it feels with its particle effects.
There are a few drawbacks however. Some of the gun sounds were hilariously bad (the assault rifle's sound is more quiet than the shells injecting hitting the ground for some reason), dialogues were very quiet and I couldn't figure out the lore of the game that much for this reason.
It still felt like an absolute blast playing this, I haven't played the expansions yet but I look forward to it.
It's entertaining, there's no horror here but the shooting is pretty good, however I often get lost on the map on several sections because the only way you know you're going the right way is through events like the game saving at a checkpoint, meeting more enemies or npcs speaking, the moment you get slightly lost on the map you're gonna be walking around like a headless chicken because the game does not tell you what to do besides "do this, this is your objective", and even that rarely happens.
This game is a lot of fun. There are some technical issues because of the games age, but I still highly recommend it.
Good old singleplayer game.
Great combat and AI.
P.E.A.K Video game, only complaint is that this needs a bit of a work around to run on modern pcs which is annoying but still a very good game and worth the hassle to experience such a classic
F.E.A.R. is a classic horror shooter you should play and experience. The Ai is actually inteligent for once (modern devs take notice). Slow-mo is the thing that this game is focused on, and it's actually fun to use. There's not that many enemy variety which might be a good or bad thing you decide. There is also a bit of stealth you can do but it's not much as the levels aren't that open (Also if you shoot an enemy in the head before being spotted you can one shot them). The physics are great to interact and look at but at high fps the enemies ragdolls fly all over the place. F.E.A.R. has some scary moments but it definetly not outlast level of FEAR (pun intended). The graphics still hold up okay I mean it's not that ugly to look at except human npcs which look hideous but you don't spend a lot of time with them as you're for 95% of the game alone. What else can I say just try it out it's definetly an unique experience compared to modern games these days which all look like COD clones.
F.E.A.R. Extraction Point expands the available weapons you can get (by two I belive) and adds a new monsterlike enemy. There's not much to say really it's just more F.E.A.R. but the game is half as long. It's definetly harder than the original and you're also alone for the entire game (except for one moment). In terms of scare factor it honestly got me way more that the original but still it's not that scary (I mean most horrors where you get to shoot the monsters are not really scary). The biggest flaw I have with this game is technical problems like a crash in some moments or the resolution which doesn't work like it should (I'm talking about 1920x1080 or 2k, I tried to use the guide to fix it but nothing worked so I played the game at 4:3 aspect ratio, but in Perseus Mandate the bigger resoultions work like normal). Also the story (No spoilers here) doesn't really make sense and I don't talk about the main premise of escaping (it's in the name) but the other aspect that you will question if you played the original. If you liked the original your gonna also like this DLC.
F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate takes a diffrent approach at F.E.A.R. Firstly it adds 3 new weapons just like with Extraction point on top of that we get to fight a completely new faction (I mean more variety is a good thing). This DLC is more COD-like which the two other games didn't resemble whatsoever. We get for atleast half of the game some kind of companion and also the maps have less cover for the AI to use and the health and armor are pickups are plentiful. It sometimes feels like the devs just put them randomly on the floor so the player doesn't need to FEAR taking damage which makes Running and Gunning a valiable strategy. It's definetly the least scary one out of the three, and theres barely any scares (I only got scared once and it was in the earlier parts of the game). It's a bit longer that Extraction Point and has 3 bonus missions which unlock after the main game is done. Now the biggest issues with the game is the movement which feels like I'm walking on ice or the lag you feel when moving around. There were also technical issues but only graphical ones (so no resolution problem as in extraction point) for example a red square would just flicker when you look in a direction of a lit flare on the ground. But overall I had a lot of fun with this DLC, you either gonna like it or gonna hate it becouse it feels diffrent compared to the original.
TLDR:
F.E.A.R. an unique slow-mo horror shooter with really smart AI which at it's time was a technical feat. Some may say that even to this day the F.E.A.R. AI is the best.
F.E.A.R. Extraction Point more of the original and shorter but with more weapons to play with and a new enemy to fight. Some say that It's the best one out of the three.
F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate has a bit of COD DNA, it's somewhat diffrent than the original but at it's core it is still F.E.A.R. It's got even more new weapons and a whole new factions to fight and it's a bit longer that Extraction Point + you get 3 bonus missons to play after the main story is done.
Kill clone troopers while being haunted by your naked dead mom
F.E.A.R is a great game, especially for the time when it was released. The creepy atmosphere in this game is amazing and the shooting part feels fresh after playing the new ''AAA'' games. Enemies are not stupid and trying to catch you whenever they can, so you never feel safe. I can definitely recommend this game.
One of the best single player campaign I ever played.....Every so often, i go back to that game and its fantastic gameplay!!
é legalzinho da pra se divertir, mas acho que não é minha vibe, não me convenceu a querer jogar a continuações, Porem pelo preço acho que vale a pena o teste.
This is one of those "special place in my heart" kind of games. I don't think too hard on its mechanics or the graphics, or even the way the story plays out level-to-level. This was one of the very first Xbox 360 games I bought when it was new. I'd just played Black on the PS2 and thought F.E.A.R. seemed similar, but it was better than I'd hoped.
The atmosphere of the game, it's unparalleled. Think Half-Life meets Black. For me, the world and characterization of Point Man gets me sucked in like a pair of lips.
Some people may not like it, and that's okay. People have their preferences. But me? Couldn't recommend it enough.
Very great FPS action game. But the game is glitchy on newer computers and there is no way to make this game playable without mods. Please update this unique classic, people are still buying and playing it.
I was "disconnected from server" while playing single player, what the heck is this?
i am saddened by the fact most games wouldnt do stuff like this (AI,story, atmosphere and overall aspects of the game)
so far Trepang2 is the only game i can find that makes the AI smart where most of the games the AI just walk point and shoot no self regard and no self care to take cover or think differently to outsmart their opponent way brainless than a zombie which is disappointing (cough cough call of duty) but what there is to expect from AAA company all corporate greed no bite
10/10 game
Look up fps-fix on Youtube, after that the game plays perfectly fine. I recommend playing in 4:3, it is not a problem at all. I don't think I have to comment on the game itself. It is a masterpiece, go play it.
very good game Am i really the one that didn't get scared from the jumpscares
It's mainly carried by its slow motion gunplay, but's still fun.
You may need to do some work to get this game to run well on modern hardware. My intel 13th gen laptop didn't run it well until I did some tinkering.
https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/789-directinput-fps-fix/
If you need it you can find this file yourself most likely by searching "fear game get running well on modern pc" via a web browser.
Good Luck!
Amazing game first of its kind. Very cool game. 10/10 I just wish the writing was better I guess? and some of the levels made the program crash. other than that. Instant classic!
(Copy and pasted from twitter) Finished this a while ago but forgot to add. This was an absolutely fantastic experience in pretty much ever regard. Again, not much I can really say about this that hasn't already been said but WOW the combat was even funner than people made it out to be, with so many moments where i was genuinely outsmarted by the AI because of my own error, and not for some bullshit reason like they got a luck shot or there were tons of them. No, it always felt like my fault whenever it happened and that's so fucking cool to me. The atmosphere of this game was also fantastic. The dirty rundown areas you crawl through in tight and dark corridors with the perfect match of the music to boost it, it really nailed what it was going for pretty much the whole time. The horror part of this game also works incredibly well, it knows how to balance the fun gunplay along side it while leveraging its atmosphere to create scares that really work. God man this was so good.
It couldn't go 10 minutes without lagging itself to the point of unplayability. I'm sure its neat, but if I cannot play the damn thing there is no point. I can run 99% of modern games without issue on med-high graphics but this blows.
