FEAR is a pretty simple game, but it is fun and I like the atmosphere a lot. The level design never had me lost, which I personally consider a positive. The story won't blow you away and a lot of information is delivered through answer phone messages which require you to stay very near to listen to. One mission in particular is packed with blinking phones and I was getting a little bit impatient. But overall it is a fun if somewhat brief package.
I played on the second highest difficulty with minimal issue, so if you are a seasoned gamer I'd probably recommend playing on the highest difficulty.
I had to install a single mod to make the game run correctly at 120fps - DirectInput FPS fix, which is a simple .dll which you drop into the games directory. After which I played from start to finish with no crashes, bugs or graphical errors.
Great game, as good as i remembered. Only issue is it struggles to run on current systems. Has to be restarted every 20 minutes or so to stop it from lagging non-stop. Still worth it though!
GOAT shooter, I replay it every few years and always a good time. Easily worth the few quid I spent on it. Extraction point is good as well, 2nd expansion not so much.
An Old but Gold Horror FPS.
F.E.A.R. has always been a title that i had in my mind, it's mechanics and gameplay are still very good even after so many years. When it comes to gameplay, Enemy AI is competent and fun to play against but after many hours they can get predictable, Shooting feels smooth and responsive, Can't say the same for the melee in this game, It always felt weird to me start to finish. As for the horror aspect of this game, It gets old fairly quick (Mainly the jumpscares) but it can be enjoyable at times, a little silly in some specific cases. There is also DLC with extra missions that you can try if you feel like you need more F.E.A.R., Honestly i had a lot of fun staying up all night to finish it.
If you want to give this game a try be aware that you need to mod it. Since this is an old game, some things might not work with modern hardware. I got it set up in no time so it shouldn't be complicated, Be sure to check some Guides if you are having issues.
Good game considering how old it is. Simple corridor shooter kind of like Quake 4 but with creepy vibes. The negatives include few enemy types, not enough instances to use the more explosive weapons, few environment types and kind of boring story and I did not like the scary girl nonsense. Good simple shooter though and worth the purchase especially how old it is.
this game holds up in a tremendous way, still the best bullet time of any game ever, basically rainbow six if you were a super soldier.
You NEED the EchoPatch for this, and i recommend you run the game at 60fps as the physics was tuned for that framerate and using the physics stabilizer makes the bodies too heavy imo.
The original.
I dont have enough energy to write all my praises for this game. It's such a unique FPS title that it makes planning ambushes as a one man army really fun.
This game is an amazing blend of action with a bit of horror to keep you on your toes, the games twist is given to you right at the start but you don't have the context to know what it means until it ties together in the end. The game's combat and gun play are excellent and the shotgun stands out with is punchy blast that turns enemies into a red mist when hit point blank or exploding them into chunks of flesh. Overall this game is a great choice to pick up if your looking for a single player action shooter.
Golden age of gaming, WB made a mistake leaving this IP to just sit idle.
So much ppl want more of it and its just such a great game with all you need for a FPS and horror combo.
Great game, great graphics for that time. I remember watching my dad play it, to me it was so scary. It is so nostalgic playing it these days. Back in the time, developers didnt care so much about money, they cared about the product. Sorry for bad english.

Great
Summary
Fear is great. It is an absolute blast with some amazing NPC design that I want so very badly in modern FPSs. There's so many cool things about this experience, from bullet time, to dynamic NPC AIs that strategize together. There's very little wrong with this game--other than an eye-rolling story--but overall, I cannot recommend this enough for fans of old school FPSs. It's so fun.
F.E.A.R. is truly awesome with it slow-motion ability and it's incredibly creepy sequences and story line. If you haven't played it yet, you're missing out.
Game still holds well and the combat still great :) and if you love first person shooter you'll love this game
The game is old but still scary if you are alone.
+Works great on the deck and ally x.
+Enemies are smart and they keep looking for you
-Even on lower levels the enemies seem to have 95% accuracy. Not bad but all they need is for you to be in their area of view to hit scan you in the head if you come up for like 2 seconds. Now that I think about it.. I mean they are highly trained military units.
-The environments are kinda dull.
Otherwise this is a great game with graphics that are good for todays standards.
The lingering dread of a classic Japanese horror flick combined with the grounded power fantasy of half-life. FEAR is its own beast. Monolith deserved better.
I was half expecting the game to be a fully horror-focused FPS but instead it turns out to be a very fun shooter all around. The AI in this game is superb, their positioning and all, there were so many times when they actually tricked me with their positionings and surprising me. The slow-mo feels brilliant too. Not only the AI is great, their response to gunwounds feels like something that should've been a standard in future video games. They actually get flinched corresponding to the gunwound location and you can actually abuse this to your advantage in higher difficulties.
The map, despite being seemingly static, tricks the player well into thinking how destructive it feels with its particle effects.
There are a few drawbacks however. Some of the gun sounds were hilariously bad (the assault rifle's sound is more quiet than the shells injecting hitting the ground for some reason), dialogues were very quiet and I couldn't figure out the lore of the game that much for this reason.
It still felt like an absolute blast playing this, I haven't played the expansions yet but I look forward to it.
It's entertaining, there's no horror here but the shooting is pretty good, however I often get lost on the map on several sections because the only way you know you're going the right way is through events like the game saving at a checkpoint, meeting more enemies or npcs speaking, the moment you get slightly lost on the map you're gonna be walking around like a headless chicken because the game does not tell you what to do besides "do this, this is your objective", and even that rarely happens.
This game is a lot of fun. There are some technical issues because of the games age, but I still highly recommend it.
Good old singleplayer game.
Great combat and AI.
P.E.A.K Video game, only complaint is that this needs a bit of a work around to run on modern pcs which is annoying but still a very good game and worth the hassle to experience such a classic
F.E.A.R. is a classic horror shooter you should play and experience. The Ai is actually inteligent for once (modern devs take notice). Slow-mo is the thing that this game is focused on, and it's actually fun to use. There's not that many enemy variety which might be a good or bad thing you decide. There is also a bit of stealth you can do but it's not much as the levels aren't that open (Also if you shoot an enemy in the head before being spotted you can one shot them). The physics are great to interact and look at but at high fps the enemies ragdolls fly all over the place. F.E.A.R. has some scary moments but it definetly not outlast level of FEAR (pun intended). The graphics still hold up okay I mean it's not that ugly to look at except human npcs which look hideous but you don't spend a lot of time with them as you're for 95% of the game alone. What else can I say just try it out it's definetly an unique experience compared to modern games these days which all look like COD clones.
F.E.A.R. Extraction Point expands the available weapons you can get (by two I belive) and adds a new monsterlike enemy. There's not much to say really it's just more F.E.A.R. but the game is half as long. It's definetly harder than the original and you're also alone for the entire game (except for one moment). In terms of scare factor it honestly got me way more that the original but still it's not that scary (I mean most horrors where you get to shoot the monsters are not really scary). The biggest flaw I have with this game is technical problems like a crash in some moments or the resolution which doesn't work like it should (I'm talking about 1920x1080 or 2k, I tried to use the guide to fix it but nothing worked so I played the game at 4:3 aspect ratio, but in Perseus Mandate the bigger resoultions work like normal). Also the story (No spoilers here) doesn't really make sense and I don't talk about the main premise of escaping (it's in the name) but the other aspect that you will question if you played the original. If you liked the original your gonna also like this DLC.
F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate takes a diffrent approach at F.E.A.R. Firstly it adds 3 new weapons just like with Extraction point on top of that we get to fight a completely new faction (I mean more variety is a good thing). This DLC is more COD-like which the two other games didn't resemble whatsoever. We get for atleast half of the game some kind of companion and also the maps have less cover for the AI to use and the health and armor are pickups are plentiful. It sometimes feels like the devs just put them randomly on the floor so the player doesn't need to FEAR taking damage which makes Running and Gunning a valiable strategy. It's definetly the least scary one out of the three, and theres barely any scares (I only got scared once and it was in the earlier parts of the game). It's a bit longer that Extraction Point and has 3 bonus missions which unlock after the main game is done. Now the biggest issues with the game is the movement which feels like I'm walking on ice or the lag you feel when moving around. There were also technical issues but only graphical ones (so no resolution problem as in extraction point) for example a red square would just flicker when you look in a direction of a lit flare on the ground. But overall I had a lot of fun with this DLC, you either gonna like it or gonna hate it becouse it feels diffrent compared to the original.
TLDR:
F.E.A.R. an unique slow-mo horror shooter with really smart AI which at it's time was a technical feat. Some may say that even to this day the F.E.A.R. AI is the best.
F.E.A.R. Extraction Point more of the original and shorter but with more weapons to play with and a new enemy to fight. Some say that It's the best one out of the three.
F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate has a bit of COD DNA, it's somewhat diffrent than the original but at it's core it is still F.E.A.R. It's got even more new weapons and a whole new factions to fight and it's a bit longer that Extraction Point + you get 3 bonus missons to play after the main story is done.
Kill clone troopers while being haunted by your naked dead mom
F.E.A.R is a great game, especially for the time when it was released. The creepy atmosphere in this game is amazing and the shooting part feels fresh after playing the new ''AAA'' games. Enemies are not stupid and trying to catch you whenever they can, so you never feel safe. I can definitely recommend this game.
One of the best single player campaign I ever played.....Every so often, i go back to that game and its fantastic gameplay!!
é legalzinho da pra se divertir, mas acho que não é minha vibe, não me convenceu a querer jogar a continuações, Porem pelo preço acho que vale a pena o teste.
This is one of those "special place in my heart" kind of games. I don't think too hard on its mechanics or the graphics, or even the way the story plays out level-to-level. This was one of the very first Xbox 360 games I bought when it was new. I'd just played Black on the PS2 and thought F.E.A.R. seemed similar, but it was better than I'd hoped.
The atmosphere of the game, it's unparalleled. Think Half-Life meets Black. For me, the world and characterization of Point Man gets me sucked in like a pair of lips.
Some people may not like it, and that's okay. People have their preferences. But me? Couldn't recommend it enough.
Very great FPS action game. But the game is glitchy on newer computers and there is no way to make this game playable without mods. Please update this unique classic, people are still buying and playing it.
I was "disconnected from server" while playing single player, what the heck is this?
i am saddened by the fact most games wouldnt do stuff like this (AI,story, atmosphere and overall aspects of the game)
so far Trepang2 is the only game i can find that makes the AI smart where most of the games the AI just walk point and shoot no self regard and no self care to take cover or think differently to outsmart their opponent way brainless than a zombie which is disappointing (cough cough call of duty) but what there is to expect from AAA company all corporate greed no bite
10/10 game
Look up fps-fix on Youtube, after that the game plays perfectly fine. I recommend playing in 4:3, it is not a problem at all. I don't think I have to comment on the game itself. It is a masterpiece, go play it.
very good game Am i really the one that didn't get scared from the jumpscares
It's mainly carried by its slow motion gunplay, but's still fun.
You may need to do some work to get this game to run well on modern hardware. My intel 13th gen laptop didn't run it well until I did some tinkering.

If you need it you can find this file yourself most likely by searching "fear game get running well on modern pc" via a web browser.
Good Luck!
Amazing game first of its kind. Very cool game. 10/10 I just wish the writing was better I guess? and some of the levels made the program crash. other than that. Instant classic!
(Copy and pasted from twitter) Finished this a while ago but forgot to add. This was an absolutely fantastic experience in pretty much ever regard. Again, not much I can really say about this that hasn't already been said but WOW the combat was even funner than people made it out to be, with so many moments where i was genuinely outsmarted by the AI because of my own error, and not for some bullshit reason like they got a luck shot or there were tons of them. No, it always felt like my fault whenever it happened and that's so fucking cool to me. The atmosphere of this game was also fantastic. The dirty rundown areas you crawl through in tight and dark corridors with the perfect match of the music to boost it, it really nailed what it was going for pretty much the whole time. The horror part of this game also works incredibly well, it knows how to balance the fun gunplay along side it while leveraging its atmosphere to create scares that really work. God man this was so good.
It couldn't go 10 minutes without lagging itself to the point of unplayability. I'm sure its neat, but if I cannot play the damn thing there is no point. I can run 99% of modern games without issue on med-high graphics but this blows.
Great game(s), though you have to fiddle around a bit to play it optimally. The expansion packs require you to put all the graphics settings on "minimal" to avoid the "disconnected from server" error that occurs later in the campaigns, which is kind of annoying. Aside from that, the game is fantastic and a very unique FPS that I don't think has ever truly been recreated. I can't say I paid too much attention to the story, but it involves a lot of government conspiracies and paranormal experiments; I know some people get really into the story of FEAR but for me it's primarily a gameplay driven affair.
The graphics can get a bit dull, and the expansions in particular suffer from having lots of boxy rooms and hallways with very little decoration at times. None of that takes away from the action, which is absolutely top notch. If you thought Max Payne pioneered and perfected slow motion in video games, just wait until you experience firefights in FEAR; It's a feast for the senses that never gets old. It's rare that you experience a game that gives you such a rush of adrenaline like this, and everything from the graphics to the sound design to the enemy AI works in tandem to provide this.
There's also the horror elements, which are kept fairly minimal in the original campaign. The expansions delve into the paranormal / horror elements a bit more, and it makes for an interesting distraction (though none of it was particular scary to me personally). There's one jump-scare in Perseus Mandate that got me pretty good, but aside from that it's mostly ghost encounters and a few spooky interactive cut-scenes. If you happen to be scared of ghosts, don't be; The ghosts in the FEAR universe are apparently allergic to bullets and roundhouse kicks, so they're easily dealt with.
Speaking of dealing with enemies: The expansions switch it up a bit with different enemy types, but Perseus Mandate in particular gets quite nutty with its enemy types near the end; Prepare to deal with enemies that have grenade launchers and laser rifles that dash around the arena like it's nobody's business. If you've played through Extraction Point and the main campaign prior to Perseus Mandate this difficulty spike should not be too much of an issue, but it's spicy either way.
My biggest fear with FEAR (pun intended) is that these PC releases are going to "rot" now that Monolith Productions is no more. I know they weren't doing much to update their old games for modern operating systems regardless, but it's hard to think of ways to get this game into the hands of younger people who've never heard of it before, and they would be missing out on a real classic. Maybe some day the rights of the franchise will land at somebody who's willing to invest in a remaster.
Either way, if you're here because of the recent news of Monolith closing down and you've only ever played their LOTR games: Give FEAR a shot! If you happen to run into problems getting this to work properly, you can always consult the PC Gaming Wiki for tips. Happy slow-mo killing!
Was lent to me by "my mate graham" A game about a thirsty mum either trying to fuck or kill her son I cant quit decide. Great game !!!
neat. there were occasionally some parts that weren't fun but overall i liked it. i think it holds up really well (especially, of course, the famous enemy AI you've almost certainly heard about a thousand times already if you're seeing this review) and i quite enjoy the aesthetic it's got going on
A very 7/10 shooter. Beyond the graphics and animation, F.E.A.R holds up very well, but doesn’t do anything spectacular. The gun play sandbox is very satisfying since most guns are powerful and turn people to mist with accompanying crunchy sound effects. But F.E.A.R is too easy. Even on the hard difficulty I could jump into a room, activate slow motion, and drop everyone without taking damage. Is dropping into a group of enemies and blasting them with a shotgun fun? Yes, but there’s no danger… no fear. The story is also unimpressive as it lacks a lot of content and reveals its twist too early. Nothing is done with that twist beyond reminding you that it exists… repeatedly. Horror elements are at a minimum here, no “jump scares” is great but if you know what a scripted event looks like, then nothing will frighten you.
Even though it's an old game, playing it makes you feel both nostalgic and uneasy. It is still a terrifying experience to put myself in the shoes of a lone soldier investigating into paranormal activity.
This might be the single worst horror game i've ever played, even worse than RE6. If you are playing this to get scared find something else.
then why is this one of my favorite games if all time? well;
If you want some of the best Enemy AI in all of gaming, satisfying slow mo, guns that feel; responsive and satisfying and no "bad" ones, great voiceacting, great explosions, fun story, and the inspiration for TREPANG2!? immediately buy it, its 10 bucks, and a dollar every sale! buy it.
Classic horror shooter. Enemy AI still holds up to this day. Only downsides are a bit of repetition and sometimes jarring story presentation. The game is short so it does not overstay its welcome, a playtrough on the hard difficulty took me about 6 hours to finish.
Great gameplay, lighting, music, and AI. It's worth playing this game and it's easy enough to download and apply a widescreen fix to it. I would say that some of the missions are really samey and it felt like a slog sometimes, but the atmosphere in F.E.A.R. was generally excellent. Glad it's over, in a way.
Love this game. It looks amazing for its age, the DLC is on-par with main game, hard recommend for anyone that can handle horror
A classic FPS! There are a few small problems, like the small HUD on higher resolutions, but this is relatively easy to fix with mods. I highly recommend to fans of both FPS action and horror. Also, everyone should experience one of the best shotguns in gaming!
Even after all these years, it's still a masterpiece,a timeless classic still worth playing. RIP Monolith, you will be remembered for this and many other games
Slow-mo + excessive ragdolling = endless fun!
Also a good mix between action and horror
F.E.A.R 1 - Masterpiece in psychological horror and first person action
F.E.A.R 2 Project Origin - Dumb Fun Action game
F.E.A.R 3 - Dogshit Call of Duty Clone
This game is manly af.
The atmosphere is dark, terrifying, and isolating—a perfect blend of tension and dread. The gunplay is simple yet polished, and the gore effects are brutal. But the true icing on the cake? The environmental destruction. Every bullet impact kicks up dust, briefly obscuring your vision, and grenades cause nearby lights to flicker, adding an extra layer of immersion and challenge.
The horror element is mid but still effective. Fettel and Alma? Annoying as hell—but they crank up the intensity. My only disappointment? The shadow assassins. They're the scariest enemies in the game, and I wish they had more screen time.
One of the best parts of the gameplay is the power reflexes—slowing time to outmaneuver enemies, dodging bullets like a one-man army, and executing cinematic kills. It makes you feel like an unstoppable force, turning every firefight into a chaotic ballet of destruction.
Right now, I’m on my second playthrough on Hard mode, aiming for a no-death run. Let’s see if I survive.
Overall, it is a no-bs game, no cringe, just pure action. No bloated cutscenes, no forced drama—just shoot, hide, blast, and even dropkick enemies in the face. A true power fantasy.
All you had to do was kill the bad guys hahahahaha...
Oh wait, who am I kidding?
I AM THE BAD GUY. 😈
Really nice gunplay and atmosphere. Story was also quite interesting.
Really my only major critique is that my fps seemed to drop progressively over the course of the missions and had to restart the game in order to gain it back. Fixing my resolution in the settings did seem to fix it somewhat, but it still did occur occasionally.
Can't wait to play the other games and see what they are like !
Even over a decade later, F.E.A.R. remains a standout experience. Its tight gunplay, smart enemy AI, and iconic slow-motion mechanic still feel incredibly satisfying. The atmospheric horror, with Alma’s chilling presence and expertly placed scares, creates a tense, immersive experience that holds up surprisingly well.
While the graphics show their age, the lighting, particle effects, and physics still impress, proving that great design outlasts visual fidelity. Whether you’re revisiting it or playing for the first time, F.E.A.R. is a must-play—still as thrilling and haunting as ever.
