Описание

A project over eleven years in the making, Cortex Command has rich 2D pixel graphics coupled with an extremely detailed physics engine, which allows for highly replayable and emergent real-time action. There is also a turn-based strategic campaign mode which ties the tactical fights together, featuring persistent terrains that will accumulate the battle scars, debris, and bunker ruins through your entire campaign.

Choose from several unique technology factions, each featuring their own sets of expendable soldier bodies, mechas, weapons, tools, and landing craft. Protect your brain, mine the gold, and destroy the enemy cortex in his bunker complex!

Key Features:

  • Fully destructible environments - The gold you need to excavate is sprinkled throughout the terrain of each scene. Use special digging tools to blast your way into the dirt and debris. All the pieces of bodies and ships from your struggles will fall to the ground and permanently add to the battlefield. Get more powerful (and expensive) diggers and you can even tunnel into your enemies' bunkers from below!

  • Strategic metagame campaign – The intense, real-time tactical battles are put in a greater strategic context in the Campaign mode, thus giving each battle meaning and consequence. The gold-rich terrains on the planet and the defensive bunkers you build to defend them are persistent from fight to fight. This means there will be layers of debris, bunker ruins, tunnels, and corpses piled up in layers, telling the history of each place throughout each campaign played.

  • In-game buying menu - At any time and place during the game, bring up a powerful menu to order new bodies and equipment, all delivered at the location and by the transport ship of your choosing. Rockets are cheaper but unreliable and harder to land. Drop ships are far more expensive but can quickly deploy entire groups of puppets onto difficult terrain. Ships and equipment returned to the TradeStar are refunded to your account.

  • Build your own bunker - At the start of most missions, you are able to take your time and build your own command bunker from scratch. Easily design twisting tunnels and place doors, traps, and turrets to thwart your enemies' intrusions! Pre-deploy and equip bodies in and around your installation to prepare yourself for your objectives. Don't spend too much though, or you won't have enough funds left when the mission starts!

  • Four-player cooperative and/or versus multiplayer - Gather your friends and plug in those game controllers! Play skirmish or campaign missions with or against up to three of your buddies. 2 vs 2, 1 vs. 3, 4 vs. the CPU - it's up to you! (rhyme intended). Flexible control settings allow you to use the keyboard, keyboard + mouse, or any generic game controller you can find and plug in.

  • Built-in editors and modding - Several in-game editors allow you to easily create your own stuff. The game's engine is built to make it very simple to modify and add your own content. Design your own missions, guys, ships, weapons, tools, bombs, and shields - and easily share them with your friends. Join and download some fantastic mods from the community at the Data Realms Fan Forums.

A great game left out in the rain by the developers. You can get the whole game for free and open source since the original creators did put out the code themself. I was really debating on if giving this a positive or negative rating was better, in the end is up to you how you spend money. The workshop is great so I would understand if that was a deciding factor. Personally I have no gripes with the game, only annoying thing they put in it was adverts for Planetoid Pioneers inside it. Planetoid Pioneers being the game that killed people's respect of the developers as it was shortly abandoned too.

Another reason I found it hard to review Cortex Command is trying to fit the gameplay in to a single genre. This has RTS aspects with the economy and battles, but it is also a very chill base builder. It has its economic managment phase, but also the abilily to gather and store wealth during battles for later use. If I was really forced to I would call it something it would be a 2D RTS with a strategy campaing in order to show the results of what you and the AI has made of the planet during corporate warfare. You really need to see it in order to get it.

Any negative review either mentions one of two things. One Data Realms behavior of abounding games and still selling a inferior bug ridden mess (I mean why buy this instead of downloading it for free?). Two the jank of this title. What makes Cortex Command so great is the engine, the terrain and units and vehicles all can be destroyed pixel by pixel. This can ofcourse lead to problems, you could get stuck on your own dead units or a mere pixel in the way. You could be thrown half across the battle field. You could even just die from something you didn't see. Yes there are a lot of crashes. I also feel the only challange comes from the AI's ability to spam units and have them act on their own, out matches the player's ability to multitask and the rather piss poor auto commands you can give. For one player climbing is a pinch, for another is a unresolvable problem in the code.

The positive aspects is that the code is out there, and I have never seen as impressive mods as I have with this title. You can play with units and vechiles at such a size it boggles the mind. Nothing will preaper you from the joy of seeing all your carnage, wreckages, old fortifcations and corpses remaning battle from battle. I can't count how many times I even destroyed my own units to add flavor to the terrain is just that cool looking (the Star Destroyer being my personal favorite sprite). Some mods just makes this a whole different game, Void Wanderers is so good it could be sold on its own. Is also very natural how you control units and build, I had no problem learning to play on my own and unlike others never experinced any real issues with climbing ladders or interacting with items. No other games really gives me the feel anything I want is possible.

This is a really fun and unique indie game that I was introduced to in 2009 while I was in 7th grade. I was on a long bus ride for a week long school related STEM seminar and a random kid from the bus showed me this game. We were sitting in the very back corner taking turns setting up defenses and fighting wars! It was kinda hard to do with no mouse and while on the bus, but we made it work! 10/10 I do recommend!

An awesome but now old and janky game. Yes, there are mods but they can only do so much.
This needs a proper sequel!

if you don't wanna read just know games amazing 9/10 get it if you like physics and intense battles and also destructible stuff.

I love this game, it's amazing and hella addicting, the trailer is a bit misleading could lead to people thinking it's a sort of forts type game ig or open world 1v1 when it's not really, it is pretty challenging even on easy difficulties sometimes the physics can be very annoying but they are amazing, kind of big learning curve and the tutorial is pretty terrible doesn't really tell you how to play campaign just tells you how to control dudes and fight but give it some time it's worth the effort. it really sucks the devs abandoned this game I can see it would have gotten alot bigger if they kept updating it, there is a community project which is free so get that instead of this but all in all a great game it's got a lot of content in the scene stuff, it's very repayable in both scene and campaign (I have not done much of campaign yet most hours in scene* imo wave defence is the best, I love how everything can be destroyed and the body parts you shoot off have different effect *shooting off arms removes the ability to hold weapon or really anything and shooting off legs makes them unable to move). I hope the devs come back to this game, 9/10, 1 point away cuz devs left

  • Buy on 80% sale for 4$
  • Installed on pc, pretty cool game
  • Installed on laptop and it says it can't find the executable
  • Remembered this game is open source
  • Open gay linux terminal (I use arch btw) to install open source version

yay -S cortexcommand`

  • Installs and works without issue
  • [*] Realize the open sourced community released version I got for free has more features this one on steam.

Still a good game though. 2D physically simulated pixel engines always have a cumstain(soft spot) in my pants(heart)

The only reason for buying this is if you have monkey brain and like seeing steam numbers go up. Otherwise just get it for free. Too bad the devs abandoned it...

What consumers must understand is that Cortex Command, even after years of enhancement, still lacks the sufficient meat-to-bone ratio to justify its pricing of $20. There are still apparent technical issues in how the A.I. conducts it frequently gets stuck on the smallest of objects or completely phases through (which can result in falling off the stage entirely).

Although the campaign and scenarios demonstrate competent game design, many battles can either be tiringly long or hopelessly short. Now, this product is preserved and built upon by a small-time, niche community ever since Data Realms decided to disinvolve themselves and pursue other endeavors.

Fundamentally, the base game is severely lacking; the only reason to sensibly purchase this game is for said community which attempts to succeed in many areas where Data Realms has failed.

Have played this an incredible amount over the years due to how fun of a sandbox game it is. But it is clearly unfinished and quite rough. Also I think it has just broken recently as it will not start at all without crashing unless I use an entirely different version (made by the community) of the game which is a shame. I have kind of grown out of it, but I can still look back on the dozens of hours of fun I had playing with the different mods that are available. Great!

One of my favorite games from when I was much younger. Although 83 hours doesn't seem as much as I remember. Unfortunately the modding scene seems to be dead, as the workshop has ceased functioning. I'm not redownloading to confirm but most of the discussions are talking about it so I assume it's not some weird lie.

The dev is the main issue here. Their games released after this, if you can even call it 'games' since they repackaged the original and sold it for multiplayer which naturally is also non-functional now. They abandoned them, and absolutely threw dramatic fits on a bunch of reviews before deleting a lot of their tantrums. It's sad to see this is the legacy Cortex Command left behind, because this game was better and more fun than the developer/s deserved. Thankfully there is a community project in the works, but it's unfortunate the community is putting in more effort than the person selling the game for 20 USD.
