If you chose the way of the Adventurer, lead an unforgiving campaign for the conquest of the seas: invasion, piracy, bounty hunting, raiding; do whatever it takes to build your own empire in the Caribbean. And of course, trade will have a less important role to play in your rise.
The way of the Trader is, on the opposite, mostly about developing your riches and your economic power. To be the most powerful Trader of the New World, you have to create trade routes, build industries and develop the economy of the colonies.
Of course, in Free Play mode, you can mix both of those in any way you want, letting you create your own unique and exciting story.
For the first time in the acclaimed Port Royale series, you are not alone in the beautiful and seemingly so peaceful seas of the Caribbean. The Multiplayer mode allows up to 4 players to play through LAN or over the Internet. Develop a successful trading company, lead your ships in beautiful 3D naval battles and force your opponents to their knees!
- Two different single player campaigns: Adventurer and Trader.
- Naval battles, raids, plundering and invasions await the Adventurer, while the Trader will develop trade routes and the economy to earn glory, fortune and power.
- 16 different ship types, such as powerful Galleons or versatile Frigates.
- Organize trade with 60 different cities such as Port-au-Prince or Tortuga.
- A competitive Multiplayer mode for up to 4 players.
- A comprehensive trade system, with supply and demand dynamically setting the price of goods and wares, like in the real world.

after years of owning it, i finally took the time to take a look... i wish i hadnt.
PR 3 continues the dumbing down of player agency and control that PR 2 already started compared to the opriginal OG PR back in the day:
combat controls are simplistic and lacking. you control one ship actively and the other 2 have default ai behaviour. you cant control your ship speed in combat anymore, only enter boarding mode which makes you slower, but cant shoot cannons while that is active. and boarding happpens via a timer, if your ship is too fast you leave the boarding area and have to circle around again.
Yes you are right: this sounds and plays very much like a suzper simple control scheme made for touch screens.
but hey now every tree in the city screen has its own shadow, as well as all the ant sized citizens..
overall the game is shoddily stiched together, large parts of the tutorial missions that supposedly explain the game mechanics dont even align with factual in game information, desiganations and so own (for example a tutorial mission will tell you to activate a specific default trade route, but the name given doesnt match the avaible default routes, probably lost in translation)
bugs, bugs, bugs small and big.
find some cargo as floatsome, automatically picks it up without asking. oh it was much more than my cargo even if i was empty. sail into a town, game wont let me leave the town agai, because my convoy is overloaded.
shoddy, loveless , careless.
again like in PR 2 ship combat is only done as convoys, because enemies, even traders, have at least 1 escort and 1 trader, so you need to be strong enough to defeat 2 ships and then board at least one of them.
there is no small time pirateering here, just like in PR 2 you need to already be financiall ysecure before you can even remotely manage the sailor costs and ships costs for fighting. at which point you probably are also already rich enough to just brute force it with the auto combat option and skip the tedious, boring combat altogether.
about to uninstall... man i wish i could play PR 1 again...that was the best of them all, the guys at kalypso either dont care or dont know what they are doing...
The first few hours it feels like a spreadsheet. Moving from one town to another and buy/sell resources. Then a pirate kills you - you start from a save. And Again and again.
You cannot kill pirates - they are always stronger that you. You can try manual combat but it is so time consuming that you want to avoid it.
Check Sid Mayers Pirates - this is one I played several times.
Perhaps I will try this game in a year and see if it is the same. For now - uninstall after spending a day on it.
Pretty fun, can be played in a variety of ways.
Very fun game, if you're into business games. Even if you're not into pirates and ships. It's fun to start businesses and make sure they're all working properly.
Compared to Port Royale 2, which is very good, this Port Royale 3 has much more difficult naval battles, info on enemy ships too low, automated battles option always loses, your automated ships are non-intelligent and hopeless at Naval battles, will always lose, unless controlled manually. I would have expected a "Nr. 3" to be better than "Nr.2" but sadly no, only grafics and some "easier trades" are implemented, while making the naval battles much worse.
Good game in general, runs very well on PC. Pure management and trade in the Caribbean. However the game is almost too easy with the automatic route mechanics and this is where the game becomes relatively empty in terms of content (It's absolutely not like a Sid Meier's Pirate). Very good for spending a few hours, shilling while scolding your business but it won't go any further. It seems that Port Royale 2 or the Patrician series brings more depth.
As Totally Messed As Steam itself. It's OK for passing time if you're into accounting but, combat is F----- beyond ALL reason, not to mention that it was written by folks with a penchant for "Late-Night-Sneaky-Uncle" behavior which they've incorporated thoroughly into the Algorithm. Yeah, you'll absolutely love trying to locate the sneaky teachers to train your pathetic captains.
Combat superiority over PR4
Good game. Great game, even. Best game of all time. Fact!
This game is great, I have far more than my steam hours says, as I played the hell out of this game in lockdown on my old xbox 360. Will never forget the good times this game gave me.
However, this game may not be for you. I know a lot of people who played the earlier games tend to prefer those over this and maybe I just like the game because i got into it when I was younger.
At the end of the day, kind of an old relic at this point but I still play it and it has a special place for me.
Best of Port Royale series But cannot put game in 4k resolution.
