the first half or so is a really solid and innovative half-life-like with some amazing ideas and passion, it impresses me even to this day
the second half is just some run of the mill generic linear fps that takes away everything fun and cool from the first half as it just puts you in corridors of unbreakable walls and pits you against enemies that can hitscan almost all of your health in the blink of an eye, or even one-shot you with their railgun from behind solid cover...
i would finish this, i was right at the end, but unfortunately the game decided to softlock right at the end with the latest autosave, and even quicksave being after the game screwed me. shame, the game started out so good too.
It's basically the PS2's answer to Half-Life, only without aliens. I loved it twenty something years ago and I still love it now. There are some issues caused by high frame / refresh rates, like with the submarine exploding as you try to release it, but those can be easily remedied. All in all this is (still) an easy 9/10 for me. It's such a shame this series has been abandoned.
One of my favourite ps2 games of all time
The first hour or two start off really strong, but then the game becomes rather tedious with boring stealth segments, awkward bug-like enemies, and major difficulty spikes (with no adjustable difficulty, though there are console cheats).
[Ignore my playtime, Dash Faction inaccurately tracks the amount of time you've played on Steam.]
Red Faction 1 is absolutely classic. For 2001, its destruction physics were [pun-intended] revolutionary. I really liked this game, 95% of it is a tightly designed corridor FPS with puzzle elements similar to what you've seen before in Half-Life. The community for this franchise is passionate about it for good reason, but there are... some problems.
Spoilers beyond this point for the latter half of the game.
95% of the game is extremely well designed, but once you begin to encounter mercenary enemies things go from tightly designed to a little bit loose, especially when the one-shot railgunners get introduced. The game becomes stingier with health resources and more giving with ammunition resources as it progresses, culminating in the absolute worst section in a 2000s shooter I've ever had to endure. You're forced to fight through several corridors full of railgunners, fusion rocket launchers, and machinegunners to progress, as well as fighters that show up and can add to the frustration immensely if you take too long taking out the other enemies. This is followed by a three-phase bossfight, and then, bizarrely, a QTE bomb defusal section. It's a sharp spike in game difficulty and a sharp decline in game design.
This is understandable once you consider the game's history. It started development in 1998, the same year Half-Life released, and was developed by a small and underbudgeted team. It's likely they wanted to push for release and had to crunch on finishing out the game in a satisfactory manner. No time to QA test this last section. Or, if they did QA test it, then their QA testers must be absolutely fucking cracked at the game. Anyway, it's a good game brought down by a poorly designed final section.
A doom/quake a like game where you play as a miner that starts an uprising against the goverrment. The game is very quake like but in a more realistic setting. Its very action based and fun.
very good nostalgia

Intro
It feels like all they were banking on, was the Geo Mod engine, which allowed you to blast through structures. Except, it's limited to a few scripted sequences and secrets. Because besides that, progressing is a chore and the combat is lackluster, for reasons I've stated below. I recommend playing Half-Life (and its free mods) instead, which is where this game got most of its inspiration from.
Positives
+ Great weapon variety.
+ Weapons have good impact.
+ Good aesthetics and graphics.
Negatives
- It's not made clear as to what you can destroy with explosives and not.
- The game immediately kicks off with a shootout even though you're unarmed. I only managed to get through that, because I found C4 and threw it at an enemy holding a pistol.
- Enemy soldiers move erratically while also being able to shoot accurately. There's also enemies later in the game with laser weapons that can penetrate through walls and hit you. Because that's totally balanced.
- There's segments that take your weapons away from you and only let you keep your pistol in favor of stealth. Except, this is an early-2000s FPS. So, the stealth mechanics suck. At least they don't give you an automatic game over upon detection.
- There's a lot of moments where you're not clearly shown where the way forward is despite its linearity. There's even a few timed sequences, where if I didn't make in time, the game would fade to black and throw me into the main menu for some reason. It's as if the game wanted me to quit, due to bad design.

Red Faction 2 review
https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198096811507/recommended/20550/
Red Faction is generally enjoyable and entertaining with 3 hours of gameplay.
soundtrack is good
variety of weapons is good
graphics could be improved with the Retexture mod and the eyes are not bothered
And the problems of the game are: The enemy AI was very bad, the puzzle at the end of the game was annoying, most of the time the game did not guide the player well and I got lost in many places in the map and had to watch on YouTube and even in the YouTube video the player himself got lost in the map.
The best of the series -second best is Guerrilla...but damn, the rest are garbage...especially RF2
Such a shame the original is not more popular
I mean it's based cause its Communist so i can't hate on it too much but for modern standards it's slightly annoying with the saving system, you gotta save manually constantly and so it discourages proper exploration in this wonderfully made map cause you gotta save constantly to avoid having to re-do half of the game. but i understand the limitations perfectly since this game is older than me, and for it's age it's really good, the destruction system is amazing and the combat is somewhat good for it's time, overall my opinion of it is positive but if it was a modern game it would probably quickly become my favourite.

Miners of Mars Unite
2001's Masterpiece (with some bags haha)
I never got to play it back in the days when it came out, so it was a long time wish of mine. It was definitely worth it. Even though the game would need some more cutscenes and explanations it was a lot of fun.
Please note that at one point you will have to install an update in order to solve the issue of the exploding submarine.
Before playng, I'd recommend downloading either Dash Faction or Alpine Faction, two community patches that fix various bugs and add QoL changes. If you don't want to use them, limit your framerate to avoid issues with submarines mysteriously exploding.
That said, I enjoyed my time with Red Faction, although there are various rough parts that might bring it down for others.
It was made originally for the PS2, so the shooting is fine, but not fantastic, and you'll have to deal with more loading screens compared to, like, Half-Life.
The arsenal is kinda standard aside from the railgun that lets you see and shoot enemies through walls.
The enviromental destructibility is there, with explosions making craters and blowing up some walls, but it's not as prevalent as in Guerrilla.
There are a couple of stealth sections too, but they're not great: you lose all your weapons (and don't get them back after these segments) except for the silenced pistol and enemies spotting you means reloading a save.
The second one is also annoying because you have to follow an NPC in order to get an item necessary to progress, but it's kinda easy to miss and the game lets you go to the next map without it, where you'll find more guards than normal and, if you avoid them, a roadblock that will force you to backtrack in order to get that item.
The only saving grace is that these sections can be avoided simply by not picking up the clothes that will force you to stealth.
The last leg of the game can be quite hard, since enemies get railguns that are as deadly as yours. The finale is also kinda underwhelming since, after fighting a boss, you face your final challenge: a time bomb that needs two randomized set of inputs. Ending the game after the boss might've been better.
It has its faults, but I did have fun with Red Faction even if it hasn't aged that gracefully. It might be worth a playthrough before jumping straight to Guerrilla.
better than half life1 in my opinion
👍
Half Life if it was good.
Game is great if you can get it to work.
unfortuinitilly theres a bug in the early game that hardlocks your progress if you're running more than 30FPS. theres workaround for it but its not worth the effort and tbh the game should be taken off steam as its non funtional
So I've beaten this game once, and now the game is absolutely fucked once you get to the thermal plants submarine part. The Sub now explode due to high FPS, there are work arounds on this, but good luck with any modern computer getting yourself to the FPS you need to actually be able to fix this.
There are community fixes, but with this issue steam should be pulling the game till Violition and Deep silver actually release a patch fixing this bug, since it's basically game breaking, and you cannot continue past that point without extreme difficulty that even makes 90's games look like child's play.
Would I recommend the game if it wasn't broken? Yes, with this game breaking bug, and the only way being around it being a community patch which the links are continually removed from steam to which indicates that someone has had a trojan or other virus from the patch in the past.
Even with the additional Dash mod, the game still doesn't run at 100%. The mod increases the trigger size on cutscenes, and makes the enemies actually harder than they are in the vanilla game. Honestly high disappointed in Deep silver, and Volition for saying this will run fine on PC when there's all kinds of issues that I caught on video even with the community patch, if you want to get this forget about it. The Dash mod completely screws up the organ transfer (Capek) part of the mission and cuts dialogue that would actually help you with the mission.
To the community members that'll say i'm wrong, the glitches and stuff I found playing it even with the Dash set up, were ones that were stupid. Enemies with the Dash mod were taking 3 to 4 times the rounds to actually kill, I could hit them in the head 5 times and the basic guard sometimes wouldn't go down.
Great classic early 2000s Action Shooter in a great setting, taking place in corporate-colonized Mars. One of those games my older brother had on the PS2, so there's a lot of nostalgia. Only downside about this version is I can't figure out how to do local multiplayer with bots as the map variety is insane.
I played this to death on PS2 back in the day, the world deformation was top notch for it's time and playing 1V1 splitscreen turning the maps into a hellscape of tunnels was so much fun!
Still worth playing after decades, only thing is that there are bugs that makes the game unplayable, so be sure to download Dash faction to fix these problems
This game lets you shoot pretty much everyone who is not strictly speaking necessary to your mission.
And once the crap hits the fan from the start of the game nearly everyone is trying to kill you.
Forget the plot.
Forget the "politics".
It's like a retro bar-fight between sweatshop workers and strikebreakers.
But with really cool space suits and guns.
Then the strikebreakers hired some bikies for backup and armed them with nukes.
Anyway...
So including friendly fire from both sides , you can kill everyone except for three other people in this game.
EOS, Hendricks and the Weasel.
And get off scott free :)
And technically, while the non-combatants are people you really shouldn't shoot,
they'll say that they are on your side and then push the alarm buttons.
Or squeal.
Fullpoints for realism.
You can turn the alarms off after shooting them.
I prefer shooting them first.
And if you don't.
you will be overwhelmed with the people you DIDN'T kill when trying to do your missions.
So after you get healed up,
waste everyone in every room and every mission should go off without a glitch.
And yes.
The game DOES play that way.
Thinking does get you killed.
If it shoots, kill it.
If it's taking a leak in the toilet kill it.
If you can see it through the wall with a rail gun scanner kill it.
You don't get achievements it's an old game.
But hit the save facilities often.
Use the explicit saves as well as the quicksave facility.
Not only for saving because of survival.
Not only because in some cases some decisions can make the game unplayable,
But also when survival IS assured it is REALLY fun to go back to a room that was hard with a gun and redo it..
with a flame thrower..
a railgun...
or nuke..
just for the fun value and to listen to the sounds of the bots screaming on fire,
then bumping into the other bots to repeat the cycle.
It's the little details like that that showed that THQ and volition really cared about their art.
Full points to the writers for designing a game that takes the premise that no-one cares about the whys and wherefores of the shitshow,
but once it gets rolling as long as there is a reason that the player needs to pick up a gun or crowbar to stay alive,
no one really cares what the reason is,
but that game is a solid winner.
If the shitshow is solid.
(like doom,half-life,postal,etc)
And Red Faction is a Solid Shitshow of an FPS from stating riot until bomb defusal andparker getting sarcasmzoned by EOS.
In summary 10/10 would "What do you mean Geneva convention? I don't have a Swiss Passport!" again.
Although this was a windows game it was successfully played from start to end under linux on a q4os 4.7 64-bit system running steam, using the compatibilty mode of Proton 7.0-6 in lieu of windows.
fun little shooter, finished in 5 hours not too bad tbh
I'm a player coming from Red Faction Guerrilla (a game tied with Gears of War 2 for my all time favorite game) and I really liked this! I really liked the soundtrack too! There were so many memorable moments while playing this and I'll definitely replay it eventually! It's worth noting that I started using the Dash Faction mod around the time you get in a submarine. You'd definitely want to get that mod if you're getting this. I downloaded a few other mods like Red Doom, Soldiers of Ultor, and Nano-Theft, which have their own campaigns and I would highly recommend those too! Overall this is a great game, with a great community, with great mods, with a great soundtrack, that I absolutely loved! It's great!
Jesus Christ, old games were hard to play! even in medium difficulty. Graphics are outdated of course, the it will give you a good 10-15 hours of fun killing enemies in Mars. I recommend this game if you re over 40 years old!
"Die! Miner" and "Just you and me Miner!" have been verbal stims of mine since i played this game for the fist time in 2012.
10/10, its just fun.
!USE DASH FACTION BEFORE PLAYING! anyways great game
Man, this game is a lot worse (and shorter) than I remembered. Badly paced story, badly balanced difficulty, and it keeps taking away your guns to force you into 'stealth' and 'vehicle' sections. I would only recommend this to hardcore fans of classic shooters.

play it with "Dash Faction" - a community launcher which fixes a lot of things and makes the game better playable on modern hardware. it also give u widescreen resolution etc.
via ingame console u can change the fov and weapon fov, but for some guns the player model isn't rendered if using higher values than default.
within the installation window there is an option to use the dash patcher version straight over the steam version, so basically if u launch the game thru steam - it starts the patched game and u have ur fps counter, steam overlay etc.
totally smooth experience with this patch for an already awesome game.
7/10
A throw back to when games were fun and simple
Red Faction: A Revolutionary Classic Through Frostbitten Eyes
Game Title: Red Faction
Developer/Publisher: Volition / THQ (original), now Deep Silver
Release Date: September 18, 2001
Platforms: PlayStation 2, PC, Xbox (original), Steam

Introduction – Blasting into the Frozen Frontier
Greetings, fellow gamers and furries alike! This is your alpha ice wolf, Kiba Snowpaw, reporting live from the frosty expanse of HowlStrom. I first encountered Red Faction during my mortal wanderings on Earth, a game that lured me into its fiery Martian rebellion with its promise of destruction, revolution, and a world-changing Geo-Mod technology.
Back when I first sunk my claws into this gem on the PlayStation 2, it felt like an untamed beast. Years later, I revisited it on PC, only to discover both its legendary status and its glaring age spots. But despite the hiccups, Red Faction stands tall as a fiery artifact of gaming history.

Basic Plot Summary – Miners, Mars, and Mutiny
Set on the red planet of Mars, Red Faction throws you into the worn boots of Parker, a miner trapped under the thumb of the evil Ultor Corporation. Promised prosperity and freedom, miners instead face oppressive working conditions, abuse, and a deadly plague.
The narrative thrusts you into a full-scale rebellion, where you'll sabotage corporate facilities, commandeer vehicles, and unravel the sinister depths of Ultor’s operations. While the story isn’t groundbreaking, it’s bolstered by a strong atmosphere and enough twists to keep you hooked. Think *Total Recall* meets *Half-Life* but with more explosions.

Originality – A Blast in the Right Direction
Red Faction’s claim to fame is its Geo-Mod technology, which allows players to reshape the environment by blowing holes in walls, creating new paths, and toppling enemy defenses. At the time, this was groundbreaking and gave the game a visceral edge over its peers.
Though underutilized in some areas, the concept of destructible environments has influenced countless games since, from *Battlefield* to *Minecraft.* It’s an early example of how innovation can ignite imaginations, even if the execution wasn’t flawless.

Studio Spotlight – Volition’s Ingenious Gambit
Volition, known for its *Descent* series, brought their expertise in crafting immersive worlds and innovative mechanics to Red Faction. While their later ventures like *Saints Row* leaned into absurdity, Red Faction is a more grounded (if explosive) endeavor.
Comparing it to contemporaries like Valve’s *Half-Life* and id Software’s *DOOM*, Volition’s focus on environmental interactivity sets Red Faction apart. Yet, the studio’s ambition occasionally outpaces the game’s technical limitations, resulting in a mix of brilliance and rough edges.

Analysis – The Frosty Breakdown
1. Gameplay Mechanics:
Red Faction’s gameplay revolves around gunplay, exploration, and destruction. The arsenal includes classic FPS staples like pistols, shotguns, and rocket launchers, as well as the iconic Rail Driver, which can snipe enemies through walls. Vehicles such as submarines and tanks add variety, though their controls can feel stiff by modern standards.
2. Geo-Mod Technology:
The destruction system is innovative but limited. Certain areas allow for freeform explosions, while others are frustratingly indestructible, which can break immersion. Still, blowing holes in walls to bypass obstacles remains a satisfying experience.
3. Level Design:
The levels are diverse, from industrial mining zones to underwater facilities, but navigation can be confusing without a map. Some segments, especially stealth missions, feel out of place and clash with the game’s explosive core.
4. Combat and AI:
Enemy AI ranges from competent to downright idiotic. The difficulty spikes in the late game, particularly during boss fights, can feel unfair. However, the weapon variety and environmental destruction keep combat engaging.

Character Development – Parker and the Faceless Masses
Parker: A silent protagonist, Parker lacks the personality to make him memorable. He’s a vessel for the player’s rebellion, but little more.
Supporting Cast: The resistance leaders, allies, and enemies are largely one-dimensional. Hendrix, your radio guide, stands out as a loyal voice in the chaos, but his character arc is thin.
Ultor Corporation: As a faceless antagonist, Ultor is effective in evoking the player’s ire, but it lacks the nuance of more modern villains.
While the narrative lacks deep character development, the world-building and themes of rebellion carry the experience.

Impact – A Revolution in Gaming
Red Faction’s legacy lies in its willingness to experiment. The Geo-Mod system laid the groundwork for destructible environments in future games, inspiring titles like *Far Cry* and *Red Faction: Guerrilla.* Its influence persists, even if the game itself has been overshadowed by its successors.

Praise and Critique – A Balanced Howl
What Shines Bright as Frosted Steel:
- Innovative destruction mechanics with Geo-Mod.
- A gritty and immersive Martian setting.
- Varied environments and gameplay scenarios.
- Engaging soundtrack and nostalgic early 2000s FPS vibes.
What Could Chill Your Tail:
- Limited use of Geo-Mod in key areas.
- Inconsistent AI and difficulty spikes.
- Clunky vehicle controls and movement mechanics.
[*] Outdated graphics and technical limitations in the PC port.

Personal Opinion – A Frostwolf’s Warm Spot
As an ice wolf with centuries of gaming experience, I admire Red Faction for its boldness. Its flaws are clear, but its ambition and innovation make it a standout in the frosty tundra of early 2000s FPS titles. Revisiting it is like unearthing a relic from another time—one that still has the power to inspire awe.
Enjoyment Level: 8/10 – A thrilling blast of nostalgia.
Hate Level: 2/10 – Mainly for stealth missions and late-game difficulty.

Conclusion – A Martian Masterpiece in Need of a Tune-Up
Red Faction is a flawed but fiercely innovative classic. Its destructible environments and Martian rebellion are memorable, even if its technical and narrative shortcomings hold it back. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a curious newcomer, it’s worth exploring—just be prepared to install the Dash Faction mod to experience it properly.
Verdict: 8/10 – A fiery revolution frozen in time.
it's fun
Really fun if you're looking for a retro space fps. I'ts a short game around 5 hours. Don't know if it's worth full price, I got it for around a dollar so definitely great value when in sale. Play using an external launcher named "Dash Faction" and make sure you pull up a walktrough video in the background, the direction is quite poor in some levels but not game breaking. Also don't overwrite your autosave file cuz I softlocked myself once and had to use commands. Worth your time if you're bored and quite fun to speedrun. This game made me want to check out Ultrakill.
For a game with 23 years it's very impressive, worth the experience, has some wonkyness so install a fps limiter mod to fix them
7/10
There is a glitch where the sub explodes when you try to lunch it. cant get past it. awful port.
goated
Seeing Mars as a new opportunity away from his life on Earth, Parker leaves home to sign up with the Ultor mining company. But the glamorous advertising of working in the mines promising high pay and high adventure quickly deteriorate as the truth of life there hits him. With horrible pay, abusive guards and a plague that sweeps the workforce, the other miners have had enough... It's time for a revolution.
Red Faction is the first entry into the destructive series, featuring an action packed story as well as a fantastic set of weapons and some really impressive destruction technology for a game that came out in 2001.
Over the course of the game you'll be fed story and objectives from messages sent to you by Red Faction's leader Eos as well as the resistance's Ultor inside man Hendrix. But how those objectives are completed is ultimately in the player's hands. Want to kill every guard between you and what needs to be blown up? By all means, go ahead and do that. Want to find an alternate path into a base for a semi-stealthy infiltration that avoids many of Ultor's forces? Go right ahead and do that. There are even two instances in the game that ask for total stealth while wearing disguises, avoiding getting close to guards or killing the stray one that's between you, an objective and raising an alarm to call for backup and dumping the body from any who patrol the area.
But revolutions aren't quiet. And Red Faction is generous with the firepower it provides to players. From stun sticks, to pistols, rifles, flamethrowers, rocket launchers and more. Most of the arsenal you'll acquire will also come with alternate fire modes. The pistol for example comes with a suppressor that can be put on or taken off with a single button press. The assault rifle will come with burst fire on left click and full auto on right. There's plenty more options out there but you'll notice a sharp transition in the late game when new weapons are rolled out that make everything else obsolete. This is also easily noticed by players because of how quickly both armor and health get drained after a short engagement with the late game gear in comparison to everything else used for three quarters of the game.
But what's most impressive to me is the use of the GeoMod engine. For a game that came out in 2001 and looking at others around that time, the tech used in Red Faction is well advanced for it's time. Tearing apart terrain or walls with explosive ordinance and carving a path to get to your next objective or to use against enemies and the fact that whatever you've blown up remains that way even after going through a auto-saving load zone is a marvel for the time. Also of note is how damage to glass and how it all shatters is dependant on where you shot through. A good way of explaining this is if you shot a window in the bottom left corner, there'll be a hole to show that bullet going through before the rest of the glass collapses. It's incredibly dynamic and the size of the hole in the glass can also depend on the calibre of round shot at it. All of this just goes to say how technically interesting this game is.
Overall, Red Faction comes as an easy recommendation for me. A mix of action with a plethora of destructive firepower and an engine that highlights it all makes for a fun playthrough no matter the difficulty.
However that comes with a slight addendum. Red Faction by itself has a lot of issues when run on modern PCs. From it's resolution to issues with the advanced power of our current day technology and bugs that can come with it. So if you want to play Red Faction and have it running nicely on your hardware, i recommend installing and following the instructions of the Dash Faction mod. Nothing changes at all with the game if you choose to download it. It's still the same game but the mod will just make it more accessible for modern PCs. And it can still count towards your Steam playtime.

still rocking after 23 years! Classic gameplay with questionable lore, has many legendary moments like when the miners free you and scream "REEEEEEED FAAAAAACTIOOOOOONNN"
Absolute Cinema
The game of my childhood, 10/10, everyone should try to finish this game!
An instant classic, I had no problems playing it on modern hardware and I'm impressed by the mechanics and quality, but at times the level layout can get confusing. Its impressive for its era and personally holds up well, It's definitely worth the 10$ Their asking, although i got it when on sale in a bundle for all the Red Faction games and DLC's so i can't say what i paid exactly besides all of them in total was-
Red Faction Complete Bundle - $13.03
Subtotal $11.99
Discount -$48.00 ( -80%)
Tax $1.04
Total $13.03
Pretty goated, a mod loader called Dash faction let me edit my fps and resolution which was so needed lmao.
Awesome classic
Even 23 years after release still such a good game.
download dash faction. game will run like butter. cap fps at 240. game is spectacular
Another fun retro FPS, apparently considered one of the PS2's best shooters, but it holds its own against any of the others. It's certainly intense - the second half jumps up in difficulty a fair bit, with much tougher enemies coming at you with more powerful weapons, as well as a couple of boss fights. Using the vehicles is fun and I was able to control them easily using the mouse. Warning: you may have to find a workaround in an instance where you need to lower a sub into the water. Quicksaving just after I pressed the button seemed to work. Yep, there is water on Mars.
Red Faction is not a bad shooter game but I recommend it with a couple of cautionary notes.
First the exploding sub, you can find help for this in the forum.
And then the end sequence which I found bizarre.
The game becomes rather tricky towards the end but overall it's good fun for a couple of quid.
