Описание

The Bridge - это двухмерная логическая игра, в ходе которой вам придётся пересмотреть свой взгляд на физику и перспективу. Сложите Исаака Ньютона с М.К. Эшером - и получите The Bridge.

The Bridge

To summarize the game before I properly start with my review:
This is a puzzle game in which you rotate the levels you're in to reach a door, sometimes you'll need to collect keys to open them. Sounds simple enough, though puzzles can get pretty hard when other objects get introduced that you'll for example need to avoid. I'm a big fan of surrealism and puzzle games so I've bought it for 2€.

Negatives include:

The mashup of puzzle game plus physics is not well solved here in my opinion, not at all.
-Some puzzles can be solved by rocking the level back and forth until an object has enough momentum to go over a ledge.
-In others you fall in a specific angle between balls (they're called menace and will instantly kill you you come in contact with them) so you don't touch them and land on a ledge instead of the eternal void right next to it.
-A few levels couldn't even be called "puzzle" since the only thing you need to do is carefully rotate the level so an object makes it's way along the outer edge; don't rotate too slow or the object falls off into the void, don't rotate too fast or the object slows down and goes the other way. This isn't a puzzle but a test of how skilled you are at rotating at the right speed.
Solutions like those feel like you're solving the game in an unintended way, they feel unstatisfying. They're dependant on trial and error until it works which makes it feel even more unstatisfying. The game depends on solutions like those, so they decided to include a "rewind" button so you don't have to restart the whole level when you die or when something falls off. Wise decision, but the problem is the way levels are solved and not that you can't rewind 15 times until you find the right angle that doesn't kill you.

The surreal world looks cool but doesn't work that well here, I think it's the way physics based objects behave in these Escher-like environments, it's not 100% clear where objects will go and what level elements (columns for example) will suddenly go solid when you rotate the level. This wouldn't be a problem and honestly be pretty cool, but combined with the finicky way you solve some of the levels, it gets annoying pretty fast and even more trial and error.

There's basically no story here... . You'll get some ... inner monologue I think ... after completing each chapter but it doesn't mean anything of importance really. Never cared for it.

The Fun O Meter was rapidly dropping but I've decided to hunt some achievements, for many levels in the second half (mirrored levels) I didn't even bother solving them on my own, which was the right descission for the majority of those. Once there's one stupid solution in a puzzle game you won't really bother doing the rest since you don't want to possibly waste your time.
Some achievements were quite interesting to get ("Slider" fo example, you'll have to complete a specific level without walking). I now have 19/20 achievements and I won't get the last one. In order to get this last achievement you'll have to collect all "wisps". Some are pretty reasonable to get, others are really really really really really stupid:
-Hold the "rewind" button for 60 seconds at the start of one specific level so that you suddenly get launched into the sky
-Enter the konami code to spawn one above you
-Fall through a specific tree 13 times in a row to spawn one (Takes ~ 100 seconds)
I don't think I need to explain why this is dumb, I don't think the game gives you hints that you'll need to do those things (but even then it'd be unnecessary). So this is basically impossible to get without a guide. Gets even worse when, out of nowhere, the game drops to 2 fps after falling through the tree 4 times. I've decided to leave it be and not waste my time anymore.

Positives

The only positive thing I want to mention is that the art looks beautiful. They nailed the look of the Escher-type environments.
According to other reviews the music's good as well. Could be, I've played without sound.

All in all, this is an unstatisfying puzzle game that isn't worth playing for the majority of it. I wouldn't call it a waste of money, I'd call it a waste of time. There's better puzzle games out there that are way more fun.
Summarizing the experience in a few words: unstatisfying, finicky, trial and error

Mind Bending Puzzle Game

If you liked being shown drawings by M.C. Escher in art or maths at school then you'll like this game. Rotate the levels and manipulate gravity to unlock the next level. It's much more difficult in practise. This game exercises logic in a mind-bending and physics defying manner.

Pros:
- Great abstract art style.
- Unique brainteasers.
- Each level is short and can be revisited.
- Rewinds don't affect achievements and wisps.

This is a beautiful game teaching one to not get stuck in one out look but to view things differently from different angles to strategically solve the puzzles. The art and music is lovely as well.

Awesome music, ambient and mechanics: the mechanic of going backwards is so convenient for completing the puzzles.

Shake the tree with gravity,
An apple thuds you awake.
Look around at solid ground,
You realize your mistake.

What did that apple do to me?
This is definitely not reality!
Why do I control gravity?

Who put all these puzzles here?
Why the hell did I just veer?
Rewind and shed no tear.

The mirror is no clearer,
Pure madness goes on.
Problem solve evolve,
Until the mind is gone.

Absolutely stunning and very unique piece of art, that also has fun and interesting puzzle problems. The puzzles are not super hard, and they are pretty quick to solve, but there is still a nice progression, so it doesn't just feel like a pure art piece.

I might be biased though, Escher has been my favorite artist ever since I was a toddler, so this game is like the best thing I could possibly wish for.

Also, this game and Braid are very very similar. And both are great games.

The visual style is quite striking and the structure of the game is very similar to Braid in many regards, with a thematic hub world leading to each of the sections that carries with it an implicit sense of purpose and metaphor. Unfortunately, while there is definitely competence and cleverness at play in many cases, the flow of the game progression feels stunted and weak. Many puzzles feel pointlessly long or involved in ways that aren't truly testing your ability to expand your knowledge, but rather giving you busywork based on something the game just taught you.

While there does seem to be more going on in the game, it feels too opaque to draw much valuable meaning or emotion from it. I believe that it is significant and important to someone, but that person definitely was not me.

Without an overarching meaning or story to drive it forward and with overall dissatisfying puzzle design, there simply isn't enough left for me to have any real reason to recommend playing this over a multitude of other, better puzzle games.

I eventually give up to walk through the game, I finally admit 4.6 Archway nonsense.

A hard puzzle is a thing, a stupid-designed puzzle requires almost hacking and ultra-lucky action timing is another thing.

Not recommended, it's a pity for the great art style and gravity inspiration.

The Bridge is a perfectly competent puzzle platformer with a neat style, but unfortunately I just couldn't really get into it. It's a bit too slow and imprecise for my taste.
