Good premise, but the game runs like trash. Horrible Framerate.
Sideway™ New York
Pros -
#1.Interesting art style
#2.It reminds me of games like mario and mega man
Cons -
#1.I am not into action games like this that much
Even to beat a mario game I would get bored after 20 mins to an hour
#2.I could not get the controls to work properly but I only played for 20 minutes
I would want to try the PS3 version just to see if the controls are better.
The Bottom Line -
I have no idea why I bought this.I guess I thought it looked unique which it is.I would buy the PS3 version only if I was you.The controls could work fine on pc but I do not care enough to find out.
this game is hit and miss, bought it yeeeeeears ago, when steam was still in its infancy. Even at the time it was an indie game, so by todays standards its meh.
The game is enjoyable with a friend, the only real downside to it is 30 fps lock but hey you get used to it
This may be the first time in my reviews where I'm gonna thumbs a game down. It's hard to call Sideway a good or bad game. There are things I love about it, but things I despise about it as well.
The story is pretty plain. You're a guy named Nox and your girlfriend gets kidnapped by some guy from the Sideway, a sorta world inside our world where everything functions as graffiti. You jump in and you're trying to rescue her. Nothing exciting, but platforming games don't need a huge story to be good.
Sideway is a side scrolling platformer as stated before. The first thing that REALLY sells this game is it's artistic style and level design. You are now graffiti, so you travel around walls and roofs of buildings. I really enjoyed the multiple pathways to reach the end, and the creative ways the game shifts persepctive as you travel through levels. I wish they made it a little bit easier to change perspective since a lot of secrets and collectibles need for you to shift and it's not easy to do.
The first HUGE issue with this game, is how it controls. You have basic punches/kicks for attacks and there are an array of moves you learn throughout the game. However, the controls are very "floaty". Nox moves very sluggish and jumping is very tricky to get used to. How a character moves is everything in a platformer. If you've played games like Meatboy and Katana Zero, you will instantly feel how bad the "floatiness" of these controls are.
Another problem is that this game starts off good, but slowly devolves into frustration. If you are a completionist type player, this game will give you a headache. It helps you track your %100 on levels, however, the multiple paths can sometimes not allow you to go back and so you have to start over. I will say that the checkpoint system is nice in that if you collect something after a checkpoint and then die, it still counts those items you collected. I found the "grapple hook" power-up to be very frustrating. So many deaths I had where I thought I was close enough to grapple, and Nox just falls into a death pit. It would have helped to have an icon or something show when you can grapple.
My next problem are the enemy designs. They start off simple, but on the second half of the game, the developers REALLY wanted you to get into combat. Soon, you'll find yourself wondering how to hit certain enemies, or dying because you're getting bombarded with goons with high health pools. This isn't a beat em up, it's a platformer. I also had a read $%^&fit with the second-to-last boss. I nearly wanted to quit when you have to go through a long tedious process to hit him, with no health or magic pick-ups, and after you go through the process of hitting him each time, he does a one hit kill move that you have to dodge or else you have to sit through his long unskippable intro. (ARGH!)
The soundtrack is great....for 4-5 songs. The music will get repetitive REEEEEALLLY quickly. Good thing the music is good, but they coulda gotten some royalty free instrumentals or something to help spread out the music.
Final verdict? As much as this game infuriated me, I still say you should try it when it's on sale. The first half of the game was so endearing and fun and I can see a lot of love went into the art style and scope of the game. You can even tell they wanted to make this a franchise by the ending (wink wink). However, due to the floaty controls, short story (only about 3-4 hours), and just aggravating second half, I can't recommend this at full price. If you want to try an ambitious platformer with great style, then try this on sale. But be ready for frustration! Thanks for reading!
If you dug Jet Set Radio and / or Marc Ecko's Getting Up and are seeking out an urban game with a graffiti component you miiiiight wanna check this out, although Jet Set Radio is a far superior (and comparably-priced) title. For myself, despite being a fan of both hiphop (Mr. Lif and Akrobatik / the Perceptionists, who are featured on this game's soundtrack) music and graffiti I find it hard to recommend this unless you're a diehard fan of either and looking for a platformer with a unique mechanic and can tolerate some chunky framerate issues.
The game itself isn't terrible and has a fair amount of enemy variety and player skills (a slide, swing, dive kick, etc...) but the game runs choppy as shit and the music they use although enjoyable (I'm a big fan of the Perceptionists) it seems like the game repeats the same 2 songs over and over and over AND OVER. I like the song "People 4 Prez" and all but already being a fan of it and hearing it a ton before this to hear it again here on nearly every level gets pretty tiring. Plus while some of the graffiti art is cool (the end level tags leading to the next stage are the most complex) a lot of them are pretty simplistic and could have used a lot more refinement, particularly amongst the enemy designs as some of them appear so tiny on the screen that it's hard to even make out much of the illustrative detail that went into them.
The game is at its best (and oddly seems to run more smoothly) when you are running along quickly dodging / killing enemies and moving from one side of a building to another in rapid succession, but then you run into sections where you have to slow your rhythm completely to line up a jump, press RB to make a platform materialize, and hope you don't fall back down to the previous area. This is common in platforming games, but really kills the pace on this particular title.
This game feels half-done. A cool concept and it isn't broken, but it seems like the level designs are all pretty generic (putting aside the mechanic of running along whichever wall..) I will still play through more of it here and there, but the choppy display and especially the repetitive music are wearing thin on me already and I haven't even made it very far into the game. I'm glad I checked it out on sale but I wouldn't recommend this game to most other people.
Fun game and very imaginative. Really enjoyed the concept, hope they make a second one. The only problem I had with it was THAT DARN FINAL BOSS. It wasn't that the final boss was too hard (I certainly felt like I could beat him after several more attempts). It was that you needed to jump through 20 minutes of hoops before you get back to the part you died. ARGH!!
This game had a very awesome concept and it looks like an interesting platformer. What bothers me about it is how bad they communicate anything to the player. I didnt even realise until the 4th level that I had a punch attack and I never needed it in the game, because i could just use the jump kick to kill anything. Another example of bad communication is the slug thing that you can stun and jump over. Any other enemy you can kill, but not this slug! Frustrating to say the least. It's also very hard to plan how to jump when you cant move the camera and just slightly see behind the next corner. The game is basicly a 2D game in 3D space, which is very awesome in theory. But it's also in some places frustrating when you the game dosent communicate very well what corners you can and cannot cross by, although I did realise there was a little indicator through what looked like a green 3D box sticking out. If you could move the camera around the corner and see what you're supposed to jump to, that'd be great. But you have to go around the corner, go back and then make the jump instead, in some places. The first boss also didnt come with a tutorial for me, so I had no idea what to do. I found out that I could jump on his head to stun him, and then he'd charge (ridicoulessly) fast at me. I ended up looking up on the net what to do, and even with that done, I got annoyed at how I didn't even have a split second to make the jump. I don't recommend this game as a result of that and what really felt like terrible level design to me.
I finished one level and couldn't think of a compelling reason to keep going. It's not a bad game, it's just entirely uninteresting.
The art is cool and the game seems decently fun, but it's capped at 30fps. Makes it nearly unplayable if you're used to 60fps. Feels really laggy and slow, when it should feel responsive. Wish I could recommend this game, but without 60fps I don't think I can.
Not really a bad game so to speak, just borning. I gave up on it pretty fast. At least I got it on sale for pretty cheap. Might try it again and see if it was just a bad day or something.
Hope you like this ONE SONG, because it's the ONLY ONE IN THE GAME. Seriously, I don't know if the game is just that buggy but I only heard ONE track loop over and over in the hour I tried to enjoy this bland, half-assed platformer.
When I first saw this game on steam, I was instantly drawn to it.
Sideway New is a side-scrolling platform game with inspiration from FEZ. The artwork is great, fit the game very well to make an enjoyable atmosphere. The game is filled with light humour, but for the most part, are unnoticeable. The game has a variety of enemies, traps, and skills to keep you on your toes.
The game is short. There are some noticeable problems that would frustrate you, but if you do get the game working, it is an enjoyable game. If I recall, the game does not like multi-monitor setup, so you will have to disable all other monitors to play the game. Unfortunately, if that does not fix your problem, I can not remember what was the other procedure I had to do to get the game working.
Is the game worth it? That depends on whether or not you can get the game working.
The concept sounds interesting at first, but the music makes my ears bleed.
グラフィティの世界でチェケラッチョなお兄さん達が戦うマリオ系アクションゲムーだよ、ゲムーを進めると攻撃アクションが増えてくからおもしろかっこいいNE
Sideway is a pretty short and sweet platformer that caught my that caught my interest from a Steam indie bundle. I was hoping that with the graffiti based art style that there would be more painting/tagging involved like Jet Set Radio. Sideway is really more of an old school platformer "collectathon" with a nice art style, head-boppin' rap music, and an intriguing yet a tad gimmicky "play on the walls of a building gameplay". It's easy, especially boss battles. I finished this game in about 4 separate sittings no more than 64 minutes (not including all secret tags and collectibles). I can't call it a must play, but if you're into platformers with something new, its worth the try if the price fits you.
Mario galaxy inspired, it's a fun platform game where you are a 2D graffiti moving accross the walls of 3D ciity. Get it during some sale

Cool concept but it could've been way cooler. It would've been better if they used the mechanics from Paper Mario Wii, so: 2D the whole time and 3D only when you have to switch around stuff. Other than that, the concept is fun and it works I guess. It IS enjoyable, despite my ranting.
Anyway, don't get me started on the music, I hate the music, I really do, it's not my style. I have to disable the sound to even enjoy this game at all. Ok, ok, I'll stop criticizing now.
All in all it's a decent experience.

Sideway New York is a cleverly conceived and well executed 2.5D platformer about a graffiti Artist getting sucked onto the walls of New York City's urban landscape in a bid to rescue his girlfriend. Using the buildings themselves as the levels you traverse across the walls and roofs of the skyline itself collecting items, abilites, and fighting spray painted enemies along the way.
The level design is incredibly well thought out, because you platforming along the side of a building or roof, which generally have four sides to them, the perspective and orientation of the level is constantly being rotated and flipped as you slip around a corner and switching your axis. This makes the maps very dense and tight, you never get bored going through a level because you'll be attacking it from several directions in very quick succession.
The art direction is perhaps one of my favorite part of the game, a vibrant, bright world of Graffiti and spraypaint pops out from the muted, cool coloured canvas of the urban environment. The character design is eye catching and organic, with its fluid animations further complimented by the smoothness of the camera as it rotates around corners as it follows the character. Everything looks like a urbanised flash cartoon, or Adidas commercial.
The music in the game surprised me a lot. As some one who isn't in any skretch a fan of Hip Hop, I quickly came to love the rythyms and tones they set while I parkoured on the side of a high rise. The soundtrack, which was prepared by SkullCandy (headphone maker) and Hip Hop artist Mr. Lif, is unforunately reused a lot throughout the game, but they're good enough tunes for me too not mind too much. Though I wish the game developers would sell the soundtrack as a whole on itunes.
Subway New York is a great game, an fine example of how a platformer should be made. But it has one GLARING, UNEXCUSABLE FLAW. It has got to be the sloppiest, half hearted console port I've ever seen. It becomes abundently clear this was first made for the Playstation 3 with its terrible default keyboard layout, its jump right in two player coop, its "do not turn off console" while saving messages, and sometimes refering to a controller instead of a keyboard. This game was made for a joystick and it shows, you'll struggle it make jumps and get inexplicibly killed in the environment, not to mention confuse your keys in the middle of a fight and suffer a cheap death, AGAIN!!
If you grew up playing Super Mario Bros you owe it too yourself to give Sideway a try!
But be sure to use a proper controller!!
Brilliant side scrolling puzzler with a twist on gameplay. Worth every penny.
