a bit janky, but a hidden gem imo. 6 to 7/10, not bad.
Admittedly awful voice acting, janky animations and fairly basic combat, but a decent game overall
The Divine Comedy of Video Games
This game is better than Oblivion and Morrowind combined. It has everything you could ever want in a video game:
- Great Crafting system
- Hours of exploration and getting lost
- Beautiful Vistas
- The fact that your character will say "Oohhh.....bandits...." when approaching Wyverns
Everything.
Fun and fantastic game. Really enjoy the music and the scenry of the game.
for what it is at the time of release, it is an incredibly fun game
Right off the bat, Two Worlds is pretty jank.
It's got corny writing, corny voice acting, and this particular version of the game has some issues with performance for some reason.
However, pushing that aside, there is a charming game, with a lot of big ideas with some that unfortunately just aren't implemented well.
The combat is an interesting back and forth. You run in, swing a few times, and back out. Almost every single enemy has a few different attacks with obvious tells that you can then dodge immediately with an invincible backdash. That backdash can be cancelled into from ANYTHING. So even though your attacks lock you into a swinging animation, you can still fluidly move around an encounter and skilfully take on enemies.
However, most of this goes out the window when you are surrounded by multiple enemies, which you will encounter many times, especially with wolf, orc, and bandit packs that consist of 5+ enemies at times, and you'll be running in circles, waiting for an opening to attack once, back out and try not to die
And you will die, because even basic enemies deal absurd amounts of damage.
Outside that, every hit feels chunky and good, and each weapon has its own combo string that looks visually cool, and have different properties that are good for different situations.
However death isn't a big deal since you'll respawn shortly after at a nearby checkpoint, and you can simply run back and try again.
This lessens the impact of death, and eases the frustration of the unfortunately overtuned enemies.
There are many interesting RPG elements, however the main character is billed as a certain archetype and starts with a handful of skills which you are encouraged to follow. Other skills can be trained for a cost at various NPCs in different cities. They are unforunately hard to find though, and the cost is quite high at low levels.
On level up, you can also dump points into HP, Dexterity, Strength, and Willpower.
All of them are quite important for you build, but HP and Dex are the ones that you'll find you may need the most for melee early, due to the high damage, and dex helping you keep up your damage and defense values. Dex unfortunately is required because every level up ticks down those damage and defense values.
Quests are generally simple, requiring you to either kill monsters, talk to people or go into dungeons to collect items. Nothing special, but they all are voice acted which is nice.
The world itself is vast, but mostly sparse, but the weather effects and different environments are varied enough it sets the tone well enough.
Items are generally pretty simple, upping damage and defense values, and you'll occasionally find something with a bunch of stat increases on it which is cool. What I found most interesting is you can mash items together to upgrade them and merge stats. Helps decrease clutter, and you're never upset to find a duplicate.
The music is pretty good. No real notes, but it sets the tone very well.
Finally, the main quest is quite short if you beeline it, but it's worth it to maybe take your time.
I enjoyed my time with this game, and while it's not a perfect game, or even a good game, it's certainly not a bad game, and I don't regret playing.
Its sincerity is refreshing, and for that I think it elevates itself above many RPGS of the time
it feels like if you described elder scrolls to a blind guy and you put him infront of a computer and told him to make that game.
I played Two Worlds years ago and had a blast with it then. I had it on disc at the time. Bought it on sale on Steam some time ago and decided to have another look at it. So I am playing it again and having a blast with it again. I really like Two Worlds.
Two Worlds is an open world RPG with buckets of systems to play with and satisfying combat & progression. Interesting lore & story too. I like the quirky dialogue and especially the attitude of the protagonist.
If you like open world games like Skyrim that give you a lot of freedom & if you dont need your hand held all the time well this game might suit you too. Get it on sale and try it.
Great game... I highly recommend it.
Refund if your under the 2hr playtime and are having trouble starting the game. Dont try a year later, steam wont accept that.
Tried the guides on working around the issue which never worked for me.
Game is a classic, had to purchase on a different service to have it running. Recommend the game but not on Steam.
I wish I could give this a middle rating.
The game has some moments of fun. The world is large and there's a good network of teleports to give you easy access. The draw distance is epic and you can mostly go everywhere you see in the world. There's alot of enemies (too much spammed wolfs and orcs if you ask me) and the loot is good with a large variance of weapons and armor.
However the story is barebones and there are alot of bugs.
The animations for fighting really needs some polish. For example the larger dragons kind of bug out when you hit them, resetting the animation over and over again. The ending cutscenes were not shown and getting hit when opening a chest will sometimes delete the loot it contained.
Overall the game really needed more polish and a better made story.
I would recommend it because if you have time to waste and the game is unexpensive it's fun to learn how the game works, like stacking gears. The story is kinda nice but I can't be bothered to finish it because I need to search where to go and I don't have the energy to do that. Also, since you stack gear sometimes you'll end up selling strong armor that you could have used and that's messing with my spirit, knowing I could have stacked 2 very strong pieces. Another annoying thing is storage, you can use chests in the world but they are not sortable and the stacking tooltip wont appear when gears are in stash. Overall fun for a few hours but I will definitely not waste time finishing it. 25 hours played.
I remember when this game was hyped up as the "Oblivion killer." Lol.
In retrospect we can all see the major flaws in Oblivion itself as it has become a bit of a meme itself but believe me when I say this game is a whole other level of missing features, jank, crude and under-developed. Even downright broken at times!
But, is it enjoyable? Well, surprisingly yes-- but with some caveats.
If you're looking for a innovative game with a good story, narrative and immersion... Two Worlds is DEFINITELY NOT for you.
However, if you're looking for a straight up videogame with camp gallore which is often unintentionally hilarious and enjoy grindy leveling in a ARPG with an open world to waste some hours whilst enjoying a interesting soundtrack? Sure!
The voice acting is absolutely terrible and needs a special mention in and of itself.
You'd swear the game was written as a comedy. It's actually kind of amazing how bad some of this is even for the time, I laughed out loud so many times at how awkward dialogue can be. The expressions on the hero's face during dialogue choices only adds to this experience.
The Steam version of this has been my second playthrough, I tried retail back in the day and rushed through it quite a bit, missing tons of content-- pretty much half the game.
I came back to it figuring I'd give it a fair shake and was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed leveling up and made some personal little goals to tick before finishing the game:
To get to level 100 if possible, fully explore as many locations as I could locate, and to clear at least roughly 80% or so of the mobs since they do not seem to respawn.
I managed all of these and it was actually a pretty fun experience this way.
If you want a basic ARPG and enjoy hack and slash grind, definitely grab this one on sale. It'll keep you entertained for a while if you really go through the content.
Whoever made this game was 110% on the spectrum
This game is a nostalgia fest! I grew up playing it as a kid, thinking it was the hardest game ever. But back then, I never read up on stats or even touched alchemy, lol. The voice acting is so terrible it's good. The game is old and def some fixes you have to do on your end to get it working but it was worth it cause this was my skyrim back in the day and I am still having fun playing it again years later in 2025. Truly a game for the ages.
I like it
It is hard to really recommend this game, but considering that I played this game about 40h on GOG and completed it on the xbox360 (which had to take me more or about 100h), it is hard to deny that I had fun playing it, despite it being really trashy.
Works on deck with a little tweaking (with some graphical glitches). Fun rpg thats easy to break the player character, if you don't mind alot of jank then i recommend.
Best RPG I've ever played.
10x better than modern RPG with with base building nonsense.
10/10 Oblivion killer
It's just so bad. The combat. The voice acting. The animation. Only get it to laugh at it.
Is enjoyble if you like to play exploraction and loot, the story is ok not like Elders Scrolls series but passable
i have tried several times to get this game to work it just doesn't don't waste your money on this it is a waste of time and energy
my childhood. thank you.
Grew up playing this gem of a game and, upon revisiting, it is still a fun game. It might not have the best game mechanics or graphics when compared to current games but man does it have depth.
Pros:
The world building in this game is great and the story is in a nice middle ground between too complex and too boring/slow - meaning it is just the right amount to keep the player interested without over or underwhelming them.
'Tis true that a whole lot of the quests that you might accept are simply "errands" but the amount of lore that they bring is quite interesting. They also help you quickly explore the map and encounter wild beasts and monsters.
One of the best qualities of this game is the amount of different and unique bad guys and random mobs that roam the map.
Speaking of the map, it is large and in charge - especially for a game this old. I would argue that the size of the map is even larger than some open world games of late... or maybe not but it is still impressive.
Cons:
Some might say that the voice acting is a bit lackluster at times and I would agree - though it also quite amusing and brings a few nasal exhale laughs when you might least expect them.
The fighting mechanics are not the best but also not terrible. By pressing the 'jump back' button, you can dodge pretty much anything - so if you have the "keyboard endurance," you could take on super high HP bad guys right from the start of the game... which is cool but it does take a while to fight mobs that are much higher level than you.
The mob pacing is a bit all over the place - though that might be because it is an open world game and you can really go wherever you want. The game will let you know if you are not ready for a certain area yet (by way of the mobs having more HP than you can count).
Due to the open world aspect of this game, the mobs scale with the player in about 95% of the cases - which can be both good and bad depending on how you want to play the game: story driven or whatever the hEcK you want whenever the hEcK you want. I would recommend a mix of both.
Conclusion:
Realistically, I don't really consider the Cons to really be true Cons because it is an older game and it was bangin' for the time; plus the open world quarrels that I mentioned are actually better in this game than in most [open world] games... so those would more so be quarrels with how open world games typically scale. Again more of a quarrel than an actual Con.. maybe I am trippin'.
At the end of the day, it is a good game for the price and the amount of time that you will spend on even a single play though would make it worth the few $$ that it costs. Plus there are a lot of fun cheats to put into the game that make it even more interesting!
Fun
despite its jankiness, i still really enjoyed this game. I like the idea of just forever buffing your weapons to a certain damage type. Its also nice to see how some actions affect the surrounding area for better or worse (usually worse).
Runs like shit
Looks like shit
Combat is shit
It's just shit
I'll be back in a few years perhaps to mod the shit out of it then maybe it'll at least be semi-playable but I'll have to run out of good games to play first.
Note: I'll leave it running for the card drops when I go to bed.
oblivion's zanny crackhead little brother
you gotta see it to believe

Old school ARPG. It isn't well refined but was a good time. Worth the nostalgia for sure but even for normal ARPG fans, it is a good purchase as it offers some unique systems. Different than many other of the same genre and timeframe since it is a Euro RPG as I understand.
It's a hesitant recommend. I'm a sucker for this type of game, so just wandering around exploring and getting loot was fun. But, really... it's not great - it's just a wish.com Oblivion.
Pros:
* Some very cool areas to find, in a large map to explore.
* Equipment can be stacked - if you find the same type of weapon or armor, you can merge it with your existing piece to create an enhanced item. This was great, and probably the best feature of the game - it meant that late game finding the same old junk still had value as you could boost your gear further.
* Some of the music is excellent. Now and then there is a dud tune, but overall good stuff.
Cons:
* Combat is simplistic and not very fun.
* None of the loot was unique, it's seemingly ALL randomly generated. Even areas where it felt like you found a unique, special chest, it's just filled with the same old junk.
* There seems to be a bug with the ending, the cutscene did not play, it just skipped straight to the main menu screen.
I know I've spent 150 hours in this game (8 hours more than in Elex which is crazy). But believe me when I say: don't waste you time.
I was hooked for all the wrong reasons: I can hyperfixate sometimes and I liked just methodically clearing the map, searching for monsters that give permanent upgrade ingredients, upgrading weapons, rearranging inventory (+3 horses) and making the character as OP as possible.
All of that barely matters for actually completing the main story. And the side quests are so dumb you better skip them altogether (except for the portable teleporter one).
Yes, the game world is quite big but it's barren and unkempt. It looks like and feels as if a preschooler loaded up some game editor and threw some rocks and trees onto a hastily made landscape and then went to do his homework — meanwhile Microsoft rolled in, saw it and was like: Yup, that's exactly what Xbox owners would lo-ove to pay for.
I have to admit, the armor and weapons look pretty neat, there is a great (meaninglessly so) variety of those, and some fighting animations are nice to look at. The combat albeit simple feels ok, the hits are impactful and ragdoll makes it funnier at times.
All NPCs look and feel the same all over the world, there's like 5-7 different models tops, both genders. All the enemies are just remodels of ike 4-5 basic rigs. I wouldn't say the monster design is awful though, they definitely could do it way dirtier like they did the world and the NPCs.
The voice actors seem to have actually tried their best, there's definitely some work put into the voiceover. The story and writing overall are completely not worth the effort though.
Also, I don't know if they are awarding Grammy for picking your nose or yawning wide enough these days but they must be because Harold Faltermeyer must have gotten his (which they boast in the game features) for anything but the music. The soundtrack is the absolute pits. I will have to listen to Gothic 3 soundtrack now for a week just to recover and for my faith in humanity to return to me.
I just wanted to subject myself to the misery of playing this game so I could play Two Worlds II next and compare them, and also so I appreciated games that are actually good more.
This game has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
This game is so bad it's good.
GOOD
You ever take a really nasty, gnarly dump? Well, that's Two Worlds for you. Except you ate a bunch of jalapenos the night before so you burnt ur asshole and ruined your whole day. I would rather go downtown to the local homeless shelter and eat leftovers and trash the homeless ppl lay around than play another second of this monster dump of a game. 10/10
