Though the game is old, which shows in the graphics and gameplay, it is still playable mechanic wise, and has a really amazing story, as well as character set.
Though I could gush over the two dialogue options of Renegade and Paragon, I won't, I will instead insist, that if you are looking for a fun and entertaining game, (which is actually complete and not a bug filled mess like modern games, with a lack of story or character in fact if there is any) than Mass effect 1 might be a game for you.
good game
30 Minutes in and we got our first crash. Rather poor mechanics but gotta give it some slack as its from 2007, still probably wont return to this
Made my 2008 much better than it had any right to be. Thank you, Old Bioware.
The atmosphere in the game and story line are _phenomenal_, and that makes it a great game for me, it's very immersive
Finished this game on the hardest difficulty and got destroyed several times, but you'd be surprised how yapping, being the real, universal talent that it is, will save you when it's time to dialogue.
Extensive lore to the point where you could spend a decade reading and then some, but it is in the nuance of these fine, intricate details which are easy to miss that make this game worth its moola.
And not only that: the combat's great, characters are great, story's pretty good, and the cinematic cutscenes in how they're delivered are just renaissance. Immersive to the point where I truly felt like Shepherd watching a certain character pull up on a floating doughnut.
Using the M35 Mako vehicle to traverse planets was not my favourite thing in the world (it was a snooze), but other than that this game is a indeed a relic, a beauty.
8.5/10. A savoury blend of space politics and blasting rapscallions.
very nice
If you are a gamer, it is highly recommended that you must play it before you die.
I enjoyed it.
The good old days. This and Dragon Age: Origins are the gold standards of RPGs.
fun, if a bit slow at times.
yes
The game is great obviously. It's the one that started the whole trilogy after all. However, the more the years pass the more it shows it's age.
First of all on modern systems, you might crash every half and hour or so because "vurtual memory has run out" or something. This is due to the fact that the game is an older 32bit programm. The most commonly suggested solutions do not work, at least for me.
So i am putting here the only one that it resolved the issue. The Large Address Aware application. I got it from here https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/large-address-aware.112556/
Secondly, around Noveria and latter on, in the game, if you are running an AMD system you will have problems with the character models appearing as black minecraft-like characters. There is one way to resolve that by messing with the lighting but it makes everything bright af.
Look for the SilentPatch for Mass Effect by Silent (yt channel CookiePLMonster), alternativelly. No downsides for me.
For me, those two were the only issues i had with running the game. Now on to the gameplay.
Everything PR related is great in my opinion, though a bit toned down compared to what i would like. Sometimes different dialogue options give the same result or even make Shepard say the same thing. The idea of the wheel though is great as a concept.
You play this game for the characters and story, let's be clear on that. That's what has the most meat. Your companions are mostly great (Garus and especially Wrex stand out). Their dialogue and personaloties will 100% hook you up to their stories. One thing i would like to see, is the two crewmates talking to each other more ofter. You come across some instances of that here and there and it's brilliant and immersive. But rare. Other than that no major complaints. And of course, as i said in the beggining, the main story is very interesting and wont have you bored.
The rest of the gameplay however, has issues. The AI is not that great and due to the maps, it is easy to funel enemies down to corridors. The map design is way to repetitive on non main mission worlds and the sidequests with some exeptions are all the same: go to one of two base layouts and shoot one of 3-4 enemies types. It's mostly a chore that you have to do if you want to get any serious equipemnt and money. The worlds you visit for those side quest are also uninspired and repetitive as they come (dont make me start with the Mako controls). Think starfield but worse. Of course the game came out in 2007 and they didnt have enough time before release. But still, the result is the result.
Two final things i want to mention as somewhat major issues for my enjoyment was the UI, especially the points, equipment and inventory interface. The later one especially will be the bane of your existance in order to go through items and distribute them properly. No filter, nothing.
At the same time you can choose where to spend your crew's points only when they acompany you. It is not that much of a problem because the rest of the time they aren't usefull, but still. It is annoying that i can see their skills only when they are with me and all of their equipment only in their lockers at the ship. Makes it more of a memory skill check to remember and combine their battle abilities.
All in all, I highly recommend you play the game, just know that it doesnt stand the test of time in some areas.
Virmire.
I love this game, if you're deciding what version to buy you should definitely buy this over LE. It's a shame EA couldn't hold up to their word and my original disk copy can't be played due to activation servers shutting down, but I picked up this on sale and played it 3-4 times already and it looks like there are lots of bug fixes over retail, its a shame this game never got the sequels it deserved.
Glitchy mess that I still played non stop until the end. Awesome space opera. I wanted Tali instead of Ashley... Still, very good game once you get past the glitches and stuff.
Great game, a legitimate classic with outdated gameplay, amazing story, worldbuilding, and characters. The start of one of the best trilogies in gaming. Can't romance Garrus or Tali though so it's a 1/10
Didn’t age well at all but with enough nostalgia anything is possible.

This game, the visuals, the writing and the music felt like a love letter to anyone who loved 70s and 80s science fiction.
Great game. Runs and everything.
My favorite Mass Effect game. It has its flaws, but the story is the biggest appeal. Oddly enough, I consider this version to be better than the Legendary Edition version.
Really great story with lovable characters, very interesting plot, nice dialouge and fun gameplay
No EA app launcher
This series is almost the entire reason why I still put up with Sci-Fi anymore. That being said, this game definitely shows it's age pretty bad now. Still worth a play. 8/10
An acceptable start to one of the best videogame series in existence. Gameplay is something you'd expect of a 2007 RPG release and some of the side quests are pain in the ass just like the planet exploration (one of only few things Andromeda actually did better) and what I absolutely hate is the item and modification system, for which you have to manually check every squadmate everytime you recieve new weapon or mod, manually arm him, manually add modifications for every weapon and armor. Sounds simple, but since not all weapons are better just because they got bigger number beside them, you might find yourself scrolling 150 items in your inventory looking for better one. Not so critical to the gameplay tho since you're the one doing all the stuff most of the time, so caring just about your equip does the job too, but then again it makes the whole inventory management and squadmade modifications simply useless. So yeah, its age is gameplay-wise really visible, but where this game truly shines in is the story, its characters and the impact of your decisions on the following games in the series, even if mostly in small ammount, which compensates for the poor old gameplay and makes this game worth your time.
Yes
Imagine you're the captain of a spaceship with a crew full of oddballs, you're humanity's last hope against a universe-ending threat, and your biggest dilemma is whether to flirt with the hot alien or the hot human. Welcome to Mass Effect—the only game where the fate of the galaxy hinges on how smooth your pick-up lines are.
On the battlefield, Mass Effect is a solid third-person shooter with tactical squad-based action. You’ll use biotic powers, tech abilities, and good old-fashioned gunfire. The dialogue system allows you to steer conversations, shaping both Shepard’s personality and the game’s outcome. Each member of your crew is richly developed, with their own backstories and potential for deep relationships.
The world is big, but too often, it feels like it’s lacking the vibrant life and rich content needed to make exploration truly rewarding. It’s a beautiful universe, no doubt, but one that sometimes leaves you wishing there was more to discover.
Elevators in Mass Effect are both infamous and iconic, it's also about the ultimate test of your patience.Your squadmates don’t talk much during these elevator rides, but when they do, it’s pure gold. Whether it’s Garrus calibrating his patience or Wrex grumbling about the time wasted, these brief moments add a strange, almost comical depth to awkward silence.
Mass Effect is the perfect blend of epic storytelling, tactical combat, and a dating sim you never knew you needed.
this game is pretty poggers
I enjoyed Mass Effect very, very much. I do wish that more planets were explorable, but I do think that there was enough diversity to prevent the planets that were explorable from feeling too similar, so that was pretty cool, especially when considering the year the game was made. I'm probably in the minority here when I say this but I also prefer ME1's controls over ME2's so far, but that might change. And the soundtrack is just INCREDIBLE. Overall I'd recommend this game to anyone interested in playing a fast-paced space opera style scifi game where your actions control the narrative and carry on into the sequel.
