Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.
With his boat destroyed, his money gone, and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amidst the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.
Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries, or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.

I'm a bit torn on this game. Because I like it, but I find it hard to recommend, but that might also be because I'm just pants at this game. Like I had a hard time getting any of the stealth to work. I don't know if I just suck or if I was doing something wrong or what.
But I once I couldn't get any further I just turned on some cheats and blew stuff up for the rest of the game, and that wasn't the worst experience. So I do recommend this because it's good, it's just not entirely my cup of tea. Just know that it is way more stealth focused than later Far Cry games, and stupidly difficult.
Great game!
Kind of like a blend between Crysis and Half life.
One thing though: If you are playing this in 3440x1440 like I did, you may have huge problems actually hitting anything with your guns. Other people in videos on youtube seemed to hit the enemies from a long distance. I had to practically stand right beside them!
Then it hit me like a ton of bricks: This game was written in 2004, there were no screens in ultrawide back then. Maybe the targetting code in the game calculates the drift of bullets and targetting line from normal old screens with 4x3 aspect ratios and a lot lower resolutions that were common in 2004.
So i turned down the resolution to 1920 x 1080 and it feels like the targetting and hitting suddenly became a lot easier, problem solved :-)
O primeiro Far Cry da história e feito pela Crytek e não pela Ubi!!!!
To play with cheats

Very hard game, even on the lowest difficulty, but still fun to play and a nice story

UPDATED REVIEW || I FINISHED THE GAME
**I live in Palestine with constant actual war; This game has caused me more stress than the actual war.
I'm mainly disappointed because this isn't the chill relaxing atmosphere of Far Cry that I was expecting (from playing FC3,4), it was constant stress, each and every single level was a pain to finish, especially because the devs were obsessed with handing rpg's to monsters.
The way levels are made are just brutally hard, the monsters are aimbot, they cause me stress and they take annoyingly too many bullets to die those big bastards.
Lastly, the story... :| I'm out of words...

Initial Review
**I'M WRITING THIS WHEN IM 2 OR 3 MISSIONS IN | 3 HOURS**
I put medium difficulty and it was still annoyingly hard, not challengingly hard, but annoying.
Dialogues are worse than the physics and the graphics of the game (compared to games of its age).
It's emptier than I thought, I didn't know crafting and collecting herbs and stuff wasn't always in Far Cry, so thus far it feels kinda stale.
I'm having just as much fun as I anticipated, not much. Just wanted to play to pay respects for the franchise, and I'm not sure I'm doing that.
For 2004, this game was ahead of it's time, especially thanks to the fact that it was developed on a new game engine (at the time), and it was a dedicated PC release.
The combat is surprisingly fun, with projectile based weapons, some level of destructible environments, and a functional physics engine. I noticed all sorts of surprising attention to detail all over the game as well.
It's a mostly linear campaign with levels and checkpoints, but there's a wide array of ways to approach most situations, and whatever weapons you decide to carry can make a big difference. Very frequently you will run into wide open sections with multiple pathways to the objective. There are functional stealth mechanics, although they can be a bit clunky. One thing that I like is that when you engage a group of enemies, you have to keep in mind that if you're not deliberate, someone is likely to run and call for help, trigger an alarm, shoot off a flare to call in helicopter backup, and so-on. And there are ways to prevent this, such as by locating and destroying their radios, blowing up the generators that power the alarm system, killing whoever's running for help, or just by taking out everyone with a suppressed weapon before anybody spots you. There are varying stages of 'alertness' that enemies can have, and it's even possible to hide and wait for them to lose aggro after being spotted. Though frustratingly enemies often have eagle-vision, and can spot you further away than you can even see them sometimes.
Some sections can be frustrating to get through, and while the level design is generally quite good, certain areas can be pretty unfair and you'll have to rely on RNG and several attempts to get things right. I played on 'Challenging' difficulty however, so I was kinda asking for that. The non-human enemies are less fun to fight than the others in my opinion.
The game is also surprisingly long, although I feel that it makes up for it with how variable the environments and encounters can be. The story is not all that impressive, but it's more of a backdrop anyways. The dialogue can be a bit goofy as well, and the cutscenes are jarring and don't mesh well with the gameplay.
Graphically, the game holds up great, but I played on 4K with the mods that allow widescreen and whatnot, along with the fixes for certain bugs introduced in patch 1.4. I followed a guide on Steam to figure that out.

when i have 5 years old i play this game and and i will play forever
took me longer than expected, ive skill issue, awesome game!
Far cry one was kinda fun, but also frustrating game as well. is more high tech compare to the other far cry games. the environment was kinda nice, story meh from what i remember (was in 2020 i played). The hit and miss im going to metion is the enemy. I play on the hardest always with games (one exception so far while writing is resident evil) and boy the enemy are so deadly and wont miss (if you dont like unfair difficulty, dont play on hardest) so cover and reflex is needed if playing on hardest. hold up otherwise pretty well.
Good old classic. It's quite lenghty.
its crash every time i try to open it!!!! FIX IT!!!!!!!
Far Cry was the first video game I played, and it left a lasting impression. I vividly remember playing it on an old, underpowered PC during my 9th-grade years. My routine was to attend early morning Church communion classes, then hurry back home, eager to dive into the game. Those were truly memorable times.
The missions were challenging, and the creatures were genuinely terrifying. The game featured tough, imposing soldier enemies with that classic American, muscular look.
However, it was the background music that truly set the atmosphere, adding an eerie, suspenseful tone that permeated every scene. I’m grateful to Crytek for publishing such an exceptional game, and I hope the next Far Cry installment introduces non-human foes like the iconic Trigens once again.
My gamer life started when I was 5 y.o. with Zuma, after some time to my list added Cs 1.6,NFS Most Wanted, Prince of Persia and Far Cry. It was one of the beautiful and cherished moment in my life and all of that is because of my father. Even now I remember how I played this game with much more enthusiasm than any other played now. I liked to feel the forgotten emotions, it was amazing. I recommend this one and others that I highlighted in my review to everyone who only start their gamers life and for many others who already don't remember how they started their way.
9.5/10
I played this as a kid and had my dad pass the missions where those monsters appeared because I was so scared of them, good ol' days!
I like this game because you can do a lot of things for a game that was relased in 2004
I would have more hours but my controller wouldn't connect with this game and so i got it on xbox and played it on xbox.
Classic FPS that is still very playable!
Amazing game for its time.
Loved it as a kid love it as an adult.
i recommend this game i like the game it has good guns and ai is good two heeeeeeeeeeee
There's a lot that this game does that modern shooters don't even include today. For what started as a simple tech demo there was a lot of love poured into this game. I beat it on Realistic difficulty before uninstalling it. There were only a couple of missions that had frustratingly poor design. Most of the time I was pleasantly surprised with how Far Cry displayed it's capability with physics. 8/10
I would write something, but most users did it for me. An absolute classic and incredibly accurate enemy AI, sometimes TOO accurate, but it's a good challenge.
its a fun game, low graphics and good gameplay
Farcry Instincts and the "sequel evolution" is the same story as this only MUCH MUCH better graphics and animation. I played and beat the game on my Xbox which was Evolution and trust me if you want a harder original Farcry game go with Instincts/Evolution due to the bad guys wont just run into the hut you are in and die just as they pass you. In Instincts/Evolution they are able to shoot through the cracks in the buildings(if any) and if you are prone in the game you can flip onto your back and shoot through the floors at the enemy and the story is some what better told in the beginning of Instincts/Evolution which the doctor lady on boat basically says hey I'm just going to take your Jet ski and go around a bit to scout around the island and you are like ok fine and you take a nap only to be woken up by a helicopter gunning you down. This game of Farcry it showed a guy shoot a rocket launcher at Jack Carver sometime after the lady in the swimsuit takes your Jet ski. so yeah if you want a better dialogue opening go with Instincts/Evolution if you want to make up a funny story for the opening go with this game.
Extremely fun retro game that can be enjoyed, but sometimes can be frustrating on hard settings.
I loved this game overall. The graphics are impressive considering it is a game from 2004. There are no distractions like skins, outfits or any sort of collectable items and the game play is focused on the story. The weapon mechanics is very good. The game is difficult as the AI is challenging. I played this on medium setting and still faced a good challenge.
I would recommend it to anyone who likes a solid FPS experience and can forgive some silly story points.
It's called Far Cry because enemies can you hear you no matter how far away you are, and that makes you cry (little baby). Still a fun time if you enjoy B-Movie-esque plots and completely ignoring stealth options.
I HATE THIS GAME SO MUCH. THIS GAME IS ONE BIG PAIN THE SAVING SYSTEM IS SO BAD THE NPC ARE RANDOM. I MADE MY BIGGEST MISTAKE AND THAT IS THIS GAME I BUYED FOR 3 EURO actually that is not that bad price BUT THE GAME IS ASS. 0/10
It is simply too old to run on modern systems, the npcs can shoot you through walls and they can spot you easily, also the fov... I cant play the game for more than 15 minutes because it gives me freaking headache I want to throw up
NOTES - NOT A REVIEW YET
Playing with patch 1.33 on Normal and good amount of manual saves
The game is addictive and fun but can be frustrating.
Difficulty fluctuates a lot. From easy to hard very often. You gotta redo the same segment multiple times mainly because armor sometimes drops inconsistently and it's very easy to lose hp or armor if you get spotted. On the other hand, if you shoot first and can see your enemy well, it's not too hard. You also become more familiar with how the game works so it becomes easier and more fun.
Stamina bar : there shouldn't be a limited amount of stamina. Simply makes the game slower and more annoying when walking in large areas.
Rocket launcher : why doesn't it destroy a helicopter with 1 missile? Disappointing.
Ladders : hard not to fall when using them. Poorly programmed.
Driving : very sensitive driving. Might not be as bad as Just Cause 1 (which I recently played), but not good either.
In summary, what I notice with this game is the same problem as Red Faction : inconsistency. Still fun though and I prefer it to Red Faction.
ONly discovered this game recently. 2023. I like the huge maps, AI of your enemies. And the souds/music are very clever.
The best Far cry game, sure it's dated but this was the bomb for 90's graphics and a real work out for CPU's. still fun.
Enjoyed playing this game, brought back a lot of memories.
Would not recommend playing on medium or hard difficulty!!!!
Got so frustrating at the last mission that I decided to use cheats just to finish the game
Excellent game , looks really good and mutants, oh yes mutants !. Game is some what hard but does have plenty of chek points , When this was new having a rig to run the game on full was for the rich guy now to play at maxed out , oh my indeed .
It may be janky and sometimes downright terrible, but eventually you'll find a lot to like about this game.
it's a good start of far cry franchise the graphics and atmosphere are amazing but there was no thought process in scaling the difficulty and A.I. and the enemies can kill you from unloaded textures even in normal difficulty it's still very challenging which makes this more of a stealth survival instead of an assault game but even stealth can't help you
and you need patches to run in modern systems
This is the old school game. The type of games that we all love. Played it when it came out on Pentium 4, enjoyed it today as much as back then. And as cherry on top, a bit hard to play. Overall i do recommend. :)
Been through the game twice, no regrets. Very attractive graphics and atmosphere of the game.
This was a game well ahead of its time. While the graphics can't compete with Unreal 5, there are a lot of mechanics way ahead of FPS games even today. AI is pretty competent, trying to flank you and surround you; extensive use of vehicles, surround-like sound making your job a bit easier, and really nicely modeled WWII relics. It is also longer than you would expect, and while the story isn't the best, it is sufficient for a linear game.
I think the game is fun and challenging for an old game. The graphics are old, as expected. If you play it to know more about the story then go for it but online does not work anymore prob cause nobody plays it. HF!

One Line Review – Hardest FPS Game
World/Setting
The World of Far Cry 1 is as diverse as you can imagine. I don’t want to spoil all the different settings, because it’s better to experience it firsthand. But to give you an idea: the game starts in a jungle, and ends on a volcano. That should be enough to tell you about the crazy places the game takes you in.
Story
The story is as generic as you can imagine. Think of a Chessy 80’s action sci-fi movie: you are 1 against 100s even 1000s of mercenaries. You start your journey on the premise, that you have to save a damsel in distress. But as you go deeper in to the jungle, the plot thickens, and pretty soon you are saving the World too!! The point is: don’t play the game for the story, play it for it’s game play.
Music
The music was great!! I loved the theme music. I loved all the background music that plays in the game. Although, sometimes it can over power what is happening on screen, sometimes!
Gameplay
I loved it!
Pros
The biggest pro for this 2004, almost 20 years old game is: the difficulty. I cannot remember the last time I played such a ‘challenging’ fps game. Every step you take: you will check your corners. You will scout; then plan your attack. You will die multiple times, sometimes in double figures, on a single mission!! But you will push forward, because you will love the challenge. And you need that dopamine hit. Dark Souls players know about this feeling.
Cons
The game, sadly, is not without it’s flaws. The biggest one, in my opinion, was the stamina bar. Why… why do you need to bind jumping to stamina? And why does it deplete so fast? Aforementioned issues, you notice outright; all the other issues you start noticing as the game progresses like: AI. The AI in this game was hilarious at first: Shouting “Did you see something”, when I am not even close to them; shooting through tents; having literal aim bots. After some time, it starts to feel unfair, and frankly ‘annoying’. Some of the missions are outright broken like: the infamous ‘swamp car chase’, that you can’t even complete without an exploit!
P.S
Concise Review on my reddit: u/grimReaper1796
Note, while I have been enjoying it, I have also found it extremely difficult. Have had to repeat certain sections 10 or more times to get through, and this is on Realistic difficulty. Enemies can sometimes shoot through walls/tents when they should not even be able to see you. Enemies are also very aggressive and will use stealth when searching for you. Not for the faint of heart.
Found there is an unofficial patch on moddb for 1.4, Keeps AI from shooting through tents where they can't see. Was a definite help.
Unfortunately this game does not run well on modern PCs, it needs a patch or a remaster.
I started this game with some scepticism because it is fairly old. However, if you give it a chance, you get used to the graphics and the game play comes alive. A fantastic, tense, tactical shooter. I was totally hooked. Great value for money also, a long campaign game to play.
this game is either super fun or the worst thing you have ever played, nothing in between.
usually the levels that are open world esp. if they have lot of tall grass and trees will be the more frustrating ones since all the enemies know where you are but you pretty much cant see them, on the other hand the closed inside leves are super fun when you just go room to room killing everyone instantly (until they pull up the rooms with enemies who need one mag each and spawn in hordes). i would reccomend this game if youre looking for an old goofy game
stealth mechanic is busted. some enemies have very frustrating ai like rocket launcher guys. I decided to play this game because I love far cry 3 and classic games in general, also it was on good sale, but I didn't really enjoy this one.
I cant adjust sensitivity for some reason, so i cant really play
Just Play! : ) It's fun! Play!,you can't win all battles!
