Far Cry®

Far Cry is a game where you start as a normal guy and, within an hour, become a one-man extinction event. You’ll go from sneaking through the jungle to blowing up helicopters with a Molotov you found in a shack. The enemies have military training, but unfortunately, I have main character syndrome.

The story? Some evil dictator wants to rule a tropical paradise. My response? Systematically wiping out his entire bloodline with a bow and arrow. The AI tries to stop me, but they have the intelligence of boiled potatoes—watching a guard investigate his friend’s corpse only to get stabbed in the exact same spot is peak comedy.

Memorable moments include:

Shot a guy in the foot, he went flying like I hit him with a truck.
Threw a rock as a distraction, enemy stared at it for 45 seconds like it contained the meaning of life.
Set myself on fire. Twice.
Drove a jeep off a cliff, survived. The jeep didn’t.
Liberated an outpost using only a hunting knife and pure spite.
Would I recommend this game? Absolutely. It’s not just a shooter—it’s a wildlife documentary featuring explosions.

A Game 21 Years old and still runs like a charm.
For how it was released back then and the impact it had, it's crazy that a remaster was never thought of.

The story:
Fun, oldschool and kind of trashy.
But that's part of the charm.

Gameplay:
The Gun choice is pure peak. G36C with underbarrel granade launcher, MK3A1, HK XM29, M4, Deagle, Arctic Warfare, M202, P90, MP5 SD and the M249.
All of the Guns have a deep impact even in the endgame and all of them feel pretty amazing too.
I think more Games should include prototype kind of guns from reallife.

Graphics:
Unfortunately, since the game is so old, it doesn't run as well on higher end systems.
You can combat this with mods, which works really well.

Rating:
Maybe it's nostalgia, but this game hits all the right spots every year.

The game tries to sell you the idea that you can play stealthily, even having a stealth-o-meter on the hud, but it lies to you. You can crouch and move as slowly as you like, it doesn't matter. Enemies will detect you no matter how silently and slowly you move. They will spot you hundreds of feet away with an empty stealth-o-meter and even simply looking at them through a weapon's scope will sometimes cause them to detect you.

Fun and hard. I played a lot of these old games back in 2015 and I still do. Unfortunately this one I already watched mostly on youtube so I didn't get the chance to play it for the first time or something.

So hard yet so fun, definitely give this game a try (don't mind the jank)

Why is this game actully pretty fun? Holds up well as a basic shooter. Though a bit hard at parts and resource managment is a major aspect. Feels like I have nothing at almost all times and I love it for that

Typical old game. Shooting and aiming is bad, you can get softlocked in some missions, enemies are ludicrously tough and can shoot and spot you through objects, helicopters and boats are basically everywhere (sometimes if you take a step to the water the boat instantly spawns and oblterates you) and you are basically 90% of the game on low hp.

For someone trying out the game for the first time, this game was quite awful.
The first about ten levels aren't bad, the gameplay is fine, and the twist later is fun and refreshing.
It's just that the last ten levels are the most frustrating levels to play, and every second of the game from then on is agonizing and not worth your time. Perhaps it's a skill issue, and I should have played on easy mode. idk. Wouldn't recommend it. Only played it because I felt obligated to since I bought all of em in the bundle.

This was such a nostalgic flash back and to tell you the truth, I think this game still stands strong when compared to the gameplay of other Fps right now. This game is really the bests of its time. I still remember when crytek release the tech video behind farcry and i was like waiting for the game to be released, it was so exciting back then.

The devs should fix the superhuman AI bug, I have found a community mod that will allegedly fix the problem, And I will give it another shot, and report back after some testing.

If i didn't have to fix it straight out of the gate, this would probably come recommended.

Can't in good conscience recommend this when its supposedly being sold bugged. The GoG version of the game comes with the fix packed in, and so should this steam version.....

If you are a stigler for buying all your games on steam, well, buy it, and install the mod yourself.

It also fixes some aspect ratio stuff, and allegedly some later game crashes that are common on version 1.4 apparently.

This is supposedly a well known bug, and I was confused as hell when the enemies would see me from seemingly over the map. Shouldn't be an issue.

Played into the first little section, and it seems to be working with the mod.

This game's gonna always have its place in my heart.
It usually is the case with your childhood games, so I might be a bit biased. I still have the CD (which is scratched so bad it didn't work after I got it back from a friend I borrowed it to). Had sh*t PC then so I couldn't even play it for a long time at first, so friend's PC was my first experience with it.
Replaying after like 15 years now? Sheeesh! Nah, 10 at least, but still. Thank the Gods for Steam!

It shows its age, but it is still enjoyable nonetheless.
Somehow it's more buggy that I remember. Maybe it's due to the age (compatibility issues?), dunno. Nothing really gamebreaking, except AI wallhacking, maybe. Now I know the tents are shot through, but they are definitely not see through!

The gameplay is the best part. Climb to a vantage point, scan the area below for hostiles and chose your approach. You can rush in or be sneaky beaky like. Snipe or avoid them entirely. Can't avoid everything, of course. Challenging even on Easy (might be skill issue).
Story is not much, but I always wanted a continuation. The end is quite open for it.
I remember FC 2 coming out, watching friend playing it and waiting for the trigens to show up. Which never happened. FC 3 is going back to tropical islands?! Cool, finally more to the story? ... no? ... oh well. Now there are six games and they all do everything else just not what I want. I guess they are good in their own way. Maybe I'll play those too someday, but I've heard they are not very different from each other. This one stands out the most.

This was THE game when it came out, but it is okay that it doesn't hold up in my eyes. Some may enjoy the nostalgia, but I would rather play one of the more modern/more polished FarCry games.

FarCry peaked with FarCry 2 - FarCry 5 in my opinion, (with 2 or 3 being my favorite depending on my mood) but both the first game and most recent games are not as fun for me to replay/revisit.

This game is totally worth it, i only got this game because i liked shooters, this is not only a shooter but a masterpiece.

Gameplay holds up nicely and was fun. There is a problem with enemies seeing you through walls but there is a mod to fix it. would recomend if you want to play the whole series.

The first ever game I remember playing as a kid. The memories this game created for me will stay with me until my death. 10/10 with the bugs and all

I’m amazed by how well Far Cry holds up, specifically on PC. I used to watch my dad play this game when it came out. The graphics, especially for their time, were groundbreaking - especially with texture patches. It creates a visually pleasing experience that makes you want to explore. Open world level design that gives an impression there is wayy more to what exists out of bounds. The AI can be unpredictable in the best way, making every encounter feel dynamic and thrilling. Lot's of great mods for this game from way back in the day.

Bright, colourful, a challenge on harder settings but will keep you interested and on your toes.
Definitely not a game for relaxation.

The helicopter mission made me rage quit 3 times.

I remember playing the demo when I was a kid thinking it looked incredible, next gen at the time. I'm so glad I never bought it because this game is unplayable trash. Later down the road I bought a version on xbox that I enjoyed quite a bit if I recall.

Far Cry 1 was the first game to utilize the aptly named CRY Engine, CRYtek’s baby. Now, believe me when I tell you, though, this is one ugly ♥♥♥♥♥♥' baby. As the first game in the Far Cry series, it laid a solid groundwork for future titles - open-ended levels in lush environments, various weapons and vehicles to choose from, and generally a repeating objective of taking out outposts. Because this is more like an early proof of concept, it features unrefined versions of the Far Cry trademarks, which are better executed in the later games in the series.
The soundtrack is O.K. It gets repetitive after a while, but if you like anxiety-inducing music, then you’ll enjoy it.
Playing this game on NORMAL difficulty, the second to easiest out of four, was brutally hard.
The game has several extremely irritating and cheap sections that took far too many attempts than they should have on normal difficulty. The AI is extremely aim-botted, and it shows especially badly in tight enclosed yet open enough indoor spaces with little cover. To beat the game, you have to mess with broken AI that is actually really stupid and only poses a challenge because it uses aim hacks. In other words, camp in one place and let them come to you. The aim hacking is somewhat more bearable out in the jungle, but you can’t go in guns blazing, or you WILL die.
In terms of enemy variety, you mostly stick to different soldiers, scientists, workers, and army men. However, about halfway through the game, a variety of genetically modified monkeys called Trigens come in. As you progress, more tank-y ones with missile launchers that take all the ammo of some guns to down, come out to mess with you. I’m glad they never made a return in the later games because they’re some of the most annoying enemies I’ve ever had the displeasure of fighting. There’s even a section in the endgame where some of them are invisible due to draw distance and aimbot your no-cover location.
The game has a terrible B-movie plot with Terrible Acting, but it is lovably bad despite my previous irritations because it’s just so campy and ridiculous.

However, I would still only recommend this to DIEHARD Far Cry fans who also like to get their balls crushed.

Playing this on Veteran was a mistake.

Realistic gameplay is a real challenge for and old game.

I would not recommend this game to anyone, especially not on Realistic difficulty. The game starts off pretty decently with a nutty, wonderfully-aged intro FMV and a nice first few levels. However, you may notice that the mercanaries are omnipotent and can see you through grass, tarpaulin and even buildings, making stealth pretty much unviable. Enemies can see you, but you can't see them (even with binoculars). They also have the tendency to immediately react upon seeing you and shoot you, giving you no chance to shoot them first. Their first shot tends to hit you in the head, killing you instantly, and leading you to have no clue where it is you were shot from. This would be frustrating but what completely ruins it is the checkpoint system. There is no manual saving in this game, it completely relies on autosaves. Halo does this too but it does it well as the autosaves are based off some criteria, but Far Cry has the checkpoints placed in fixed positions. This makes the game feel like a complete chore to play through, you have to do things again and again, and you have no clue where the next save is. At that point the only release of joy or fulfilment is reaching a checkpoint, not actually playing the game for what it is. I just felt happier that I was closer to being done with this game. The other enemies were fine, except for the Stealth Trigens, they were 99% invisible. I had to completely rely on the binoculars to actually see where they are. The Fat Boys with rocket launchers were quite tanky but they were always a nice fright. The guns in this game are pretty decent, though half of them just became unviable. The OICW, Sniper Rifle and Missile Launcher was all I really needed, they got the job done. The visual design on them was alright. The sound design on them was below average, they did not feel very strong, they sounded more like slapping a piece of paper. The mechanical sounds (reload, charging) were laughably weak and quiet. The sound design for the rest of the game was pretty nice though. The voice acting is so cheesy that it's awesome, the mercenaries all sound like whiny brats. There was some weird (UbiSoft™™) voice compression, especially on Valerie, it made her sound like a robot. The soundtrack was pretty decent. The story is alright. The game's engine allowed for some nice graphics and allowed for some nice freedom. The game is buggy but I did not witness anything game-breaking except for a few crashes. The levels get quite repetitive as there are 20 chapters, many of which are too similar. It feels like the game has had its playtime artificially inflated with all the pointless levels.

This game is a waste of time.

Well, I finally finished this game... I just wanted to experience the story to understand the beginning of Far Cry.

Is it a bad game? Far from it.

Is it a very difficult game? Yeah, totally.

Did I use cheats to make it easier? Yeah. I just couldn't play the game without them.

Should you at least give this game a try? Yeah, probably. If you're interested, just go for it. As I said, this game is difficult. If you don’t have the patience for old games (like me), just use cheats and enjoy the story.

Buggy, sometimes unfair, okay gameplay, and a very mild story.

I love when a funny little merc tanked 4 headshots. And Gods forbid that I want to use this 30-inch concrete wall as cover that they can somehow shoot through, but if I try to shoot through foliage, it somehow acts as an impenetrable wall.
It's a funny, messy game. If I could, I would give it a slightly-raised 75° thumbs-up .

This with the tent fix makes this game an actual worthy piece, the storyline is, well, bizarre, the gameplay is kinda cool, the bugs are abundant, but the island is very beautiful, especially for 2004, and it wasn't primarly developed by Ubisoft.

THESE GRAPHICS ARE PEAK THE GAME PLAY IS AWESOME. I am sad multiplayer won't work as if severs were shut down (or maybe nobody is playing) but other than that it is cool.

It's a fun game that is still quite challenging even on normal difficulty. I'd say it's different from the other Far Crys but it is also the first. Over all, pretty good.

I played this game at launch. It was undeniably a groundbreaking achievement in terms of graphics, physics, effects, and the balance of openness and large-scale locations. But as a shooter, it was pretty average, and by the midpoint, it turns into a mess with the introduction of mutants and supersoldiers.

It’s clear this was the wrong choice—I don’t know anyone who liked that abrupt shift. Plus, the fact that the mainline series never revisited this theme and focused on realism instead says it all. Ultimately, the game was more impressive as an engine showcase or tech demo than for its actual gameplay.

Its graphics are still okay by today's standards.
Good enviromental details but character models aren't good as it was back in the day.

AI is pretty bad. Stealth is a joke. You cannot silently crawl around your enemies and expect them not to react.

Solid shooter, just like Half Life 1. You go and kill hundreds of people and bunch of mutants and repeat the cycle. If you acknowledge this before starting everything will be fine about your experience.

Its soundtracks are awesome (check out "Far Cry Soundtrack - Warzone").

i have loved the series for many years but this game has problems the ai is actually aimbotting through wall at the beginning chapter i kept getting lasered through building wall on the beachs its a joke not to mention the mutants on normal just two shot you and i cant really move out of the way i'm not one to step away from a challenge but this isnt a challenge its just bullshit

Haha! No! Just No!
This is the most frustrating game to play today. You breathe, "is there something over there?". Your heart beats, "I can hear something". You're not even in the room, "I can see him!". Not to mention the bullets go straight through the walls to hit you, yet sometimes when your aim is on target your bullets have no impact. I admire the graphics and innovations for the time, but the controls and gameplay are frustrating. Most PC games that came out during this time do not necessarily support the controller, especially on X-input which can make them hard to play if you're not used to keyboard & mouse. One thing is, they did indeed provide a blueprint for the games of today on where to improve in order to entertain and technological advancements forward. Only play this if you enjoy a tough unfair challenge.
