Freelance mariner Jack Carver is cursing the day he ever came to this island. A week ago, a brash female reporter named Valerie had offered him an incredible sum of cash to take her to this unspoiled paradise. Shortly after docking, however, Jack's boat was greeted by artillery fire from a mysterious militia group swarming about the island.
With his boat destroyed, his money gone, and the gorgeous Valerie suddenly missing, Jack now finds himself facing an army of mercenaries amidst the wilds of the island, with nothing but a gun and his wits to survive. But the further he pushes into the lush jungle canopy, the stranger things become.
Jack encounters an insider within the militia group who reveals the horrific details of the mercenaries' true intentions. He presents Jack with an unsettling choice: battle the deadliest mercenaries, or condemn the human race to a maniac's insidious agenda.

Unplayable. Enemies can see you and shoot you through several walls.
Gameplay: https://youtu.be/xvwdMn0UWgY
Haha! No! Just No!
This is the most frustrating game to play today. You breathe, "is there something over there?". Your heart beats, "I can hear something". You're not even in the room, "I can see him!". Not to mention the bullets go straight through the walls to hit you, yet sometimes when your aim is on target your bullets have no impact. I admire the graphics and innovations for the time, but the controls and gameplay are frustrating. Most PC games that came out during this time do not necessarily support the controller, especially on X-input which can make them hard to play if you're not used to keyboard & mouse. One thing is, they did indeed provide a blueprint for the games of today on where to improve in order to entertain and technological advancements forward. Only play this if you enjoy a tough unfair challenge.
Terribly optimized. Only way to have fun is in god mode
When Far Cry was a great franchise.
In 2004 this game was a stunner i remember the BBC News ran a story on its release, I thought i must get this.

Might have aged a bit since but very much a part of my gaming journey.

This is an oldie but i can't say its a total goody. It does whats expected and entertains you for the most part but since i didn't play this when it came out a long time ago, i just wasn't into it like so many. It doesn't make this a bad game and to be honest here, its better than what we get now with all the sequels since. You don't get filler for the sake of padding your game time and you get what i consider an actual twist near end game. Its a wild twist to say the least but that's what made games like this good back in the day. Devs used creativity and imagination and i will always have a soft spot for people who take a risk like that. I couldn't imagine what people would say if this game came out today.
oH BOE the memories Only reason i got this game was to go back to those later afternoons after school and feel like a lil kid again . Great game
Open world. It's up to you on how to fulfil each objectives. The game is replayable many times. You can utilize different approach everytime you play it.
It's a broken game, with broken AI that sees you and shoots you through walls. This is yet another Crytek game with game breaking bugs that was never fixed and relies, again, on another EXE for it to work properly.
Still lots of fun and you can max the video settings now. Use the binocs to the bad guys talk. It's quite hilarious. Great game.
Ahh Far Cry, you've started such a great video game series and still you started like this. Far Cry is linear or maximum semi open world shooter developed by Crytek, a developer mostly known for the Crysis Series as well as Hunt Showdown. Far Cry 1 is the complete opposite to its successors, which all have been developed by ubisoft instead of crytek. So if you look for the standard Far Cry Expierience, you are wrong here. This is a linear shooter following the story of a mercenary who discovers a military base on a desolate island which is used by the government for genetic expieriences. Also, you fight mutant in this game. Sounds like Far Cry to you? No? Well as you can see Far Cry went a long way to be at the place it is now. Whether you find that good or not. Far Cry 1 is not a bad game at any means, it just really feels much more like crysis than Far Cry. The Story isnt that interesting but it's enough to keep you going. The shooting is pretty good and the graphics look pretty good, as to be expected from a cry engine game. Though I must say that Half Life 2 and Doom 3, which were both released in 2004, so one year prior than this, look both much better than this. Also we have the most obvious problem, it's build on the old cry engine. Why is that problem you might think? I mean yes it's true, the Cry engine has always been known for beatiful graphics, but also for massive compatibility problems with modern hardware. To say it easier, if you run modern hardware, there is a fair chance that this will run like shit. Not because your hardware is bad but because old games based on the cryengine just often run like shit and dont work with modern hardware. The game will crash often, you will have a ton of FPS drops, lags, sound bugs and more. Not because the game is bad, its just not working on modern hardware, there are patches to fix this, I tried since the game wouldnt even start without patching it, but it still runs like sh*t. And it's sad, because the game would be enjoyable if it wouldnt be for its poor performance. I recommened this game if you're willing to put in the time to fix the game up with community patches and bug fixes. If it's worth it for you to spend so much time just to make the game run relatively stable, go for it, otherwise skip it. Honestly, you don't miss out on a lot anyways. Maybe a proper remaster will make this game great again, but certainly not like this. And it's possible for games from that era, we got so many great looking games from 2004 that work without a problem. If it wouldn't be for the huge problems the cry engine has with modern hardware, we could still enjoy it without a problem. Look at Half Life 2 or Doom 3, Halo 2, hell even GTA San Andreas runs better than this. Please fix this, it would be sad to lose a classic like this just because the engine hates modern GPUs.
Short Update. Shortly before reaching the military base the game becomes basically unplayable due to constant crashes and extreme FPS Drops, also the enemies start tposing in that area. I needed almost 6 hours for an hour long part due to constant freezing and crashing, in this state I just can't recommend the game.
Edit: Another gamebreaking bug in the level where you're suppost to turn off the valves. Even though all valves have been used, the game wont let you progress making you stuck in the level.
Edit 2: I finally found a way around the bug (after 3-4 hours :D) really annoying.
Fun game, released almost 20 yrs ago, played it when it first came out, still a valid solid FPS, with an actual story and plot although the Steam version has a lot of bugs compared, to game when it was first played, even later version the Windows XP 64 bit, release to incite games to try Windows XP 64, a Windows version that wasn't fully supported with drivers by device manufacturers, it had more detail and less bugs, plus a few maps that were better modified and different than the original Far Cry did,for game play, somewhat different maps , even with its age an enjoyable gaming experience, game was co-op when it first came out and was fun, looking past some of the bug in this Steam version, and older character graphic output, still highly recommend you try this game, at higher levels can be challenging and fun !
I saw this game be called "the dark souls of shooters" and that could not be more fitting. Just like a souls game, the difficulty is unreal, unfair, and seems impossible. But if you stick it out, you will be glad you did, and you'll feel like you climbed a virtual mountain.
Realistic movement and time associated with ground warfare. Have to do a lot of ambushing. Great graphics, and realism, especially for the time it was made!
I highly recommend Far Cry for anyone looking to experience a classic in the open-world shooter genre. While its AI may feel dated and the story isn’t as complex as modern titles, the game’s immersive environment, varied combat, and freedom of choice still make it a memorable and enjoyable experience. It’s a great look back at the roots of the franchise and a perfect starting point for those curious about how the series evolved.
When Far Cry launched in 2004, it made a huge impact with its open-world design and immersive tropical island environment. The lush jungles, pristine beaches, and dynamic weather made the world feel alive, but what truly struck players at the time was the feeling of awe and wonder as they first explored this vast, uncharted territory. The game’s main menu music hit players with a wave of goosebumps. It was a powerful moment, perfectly capturing the sense of adventure and excitement that lay ahead, leaving a lasting emotional imprint and setting the tone for the journey into the unknown.
The combat offered great variety, from all-out assaults to stealth tactics, with large open maps and a flexible arsenal. While the AI was impressive for its time, reacting to sounds and using cover, it feels outdated by today’s standards, with more predictable enemy behaviors. Still, the variety in weapons, vehicles, and environments keeps the combat engaging.
nice story but better graffics
The only Far Cry game that was wort anything after this one was Far Cry 3. So going back to oldy but goody ..as always
Interesting story, good action. Player be warned: even on "Easy Mode" this game is extremely difficult.
beat the game twice on normal with ai balance(normal felt like playing halo on heroic or legendary) first play through was hell but second play through was nice to play. dont bother sneaking cause enemies can snipe you a mile away and know where you are. overall okay
As someone who has speedrun this game for over 100 hours, this is among my favorite speedgames of all time, despite the constant BS that it had to offer me when I'd speedrun it haha
Casually, it holds up pretty well too, graphically and gameplay wise for its time. The soundtrack is a pretty nice bag of bangers and music that would give you goosebumps occasionally. I think it's also pretty obvious and safe to say that the story was never its focus in the first place. It's written pretty badly, the voice acting is hilarious and some of the elements don't make sense at all lol
Would I recommend this?
Sure, why not? It's the first Far Cry game, and besides all of this, I think nostalgia also plays a big role to me because this is one of the older games I used to grow up with. I gotta thank my dad for showing this to me, back in 2009 when I had my first PC. Those trigens will forever creep me out haha. But yeah, play it! You won't miss out :)
I started playing Far Cry when it was first introduced and totally loved it. The background music created a special mood for me. I played the original game maybe twelve times and each time played it differently. Now I am playing the hardest level on the revised game and it is incredibly difficult, but so gratifying when a solution is found. Prior to Far Cry on the most difficult level, the most difficult game that I have ever played was Metro Last light on its most difficult level. Chose this game if you really want to challenge yourself.
Wonderful Game! I hate vale and swamp chapter, Doyle is a sigma. I liked everything else very much, the creatures and level designs were nice and my beloved m4a1 and machine gun is amazing!
Definition of jank, but it's alright. Can't say how revolutionary this was, but in the current state of things it's nothing to write home about. Bad story and very difficult for sure. Don't listen to the negative reviews, I saw some dude write "you cannot beat this without cheats". Genuine skill issue. 6/10
You cannot beat this game without cheats. Trash, honestly annoyed I wasted 11.5 hours on this game.
Garbage good lord, imagine if a five year old made fallout and decided to spam supermutants all over the map that shoot rocket launchers.
This game is so bad because it's hard to win. It doesn't worth to invest a lot of time to pass all enemies and levels. There is no satisfaction in playing it. If you enjoy it just play it on godmode and that's it. It's a shame you can't save the game manually (it saves only on checkpoints). You die so easily and the game reloads at the latest saved checkpoint and you need to kill everyone again. It's a shame that enemies spots you so easily and they fire on you all together regarding the distance. They can see you through walls and vegetation. It's impossible to sneak or take around a base. You need a lot of bullets to kill someone yet you are killed very easily. All of these makes this game a stupid one. It's a game for people who wants to invest hundreds of hours to pass bad game play.
Review: Positive
Far Cry 1 is a classic that laid the foundation for the legendary franchise we know today. Developed by Crytek, it offers a blend of intense action, open-ended gameplay, and beautiful tropical environments that still hold up surprisingly well for a game released in 2004.
Pros:
✅ Atmospheric Environments: The lush tropical island setting is vibrant and immersive, with sprawling jungles, beaches, and dense forests that feel alive.
✅ Challenging Gameplay: This is no hand-holding experience. Enemies are smart, aggressive, and will outflank and ambush you, keeping you on your toes.
✅ Freedom of Approach: Engage in loud, chaotic firefights or sneak past enemies using stealth—your call.
✅ Nostalgia Factor: A blast from the past for fans of early 2000s shooters.
Cons:
❌ Dated Mechanics: AI can be brutally difficult, sometimes bordering on unfair, and checkpoint placement can be frustrating.
❌ Story: The plot is serviceable but forgettable, with cheesy dialogue and cliché characters.
❌ Mutant Enemies: Some players might find the shift from human enemies to mutants jarring and less fun.
Final Thoughts:
Far Cry 1 is a game that rewards patience, strategy, and persistence. While it shows its age in certain areas, it's an excellent piece of gaming history that still delivers satisfying FPS action. If you’re a fan of the series or retro shooters, this is worth experiencing. Just be prepared for a challenging and sometimes unforgiving ride.
Score: 8/10
"It's not just a game, it's a survival test in paradise... with a twist."
I have no idea how I beat this game back in 2004 when it was first released. I'm playing it again for the first time 20 years later, on normal difficulty, and I cannot advance without cheats. The AI is punishing to say the least.
But 20 years later and Far Cry holds up amazingly well. Can go in stealth or guns blazing. Immersive, satisfying, challenging, and super fun.

F*** Ubisoft. They shut down the game servers for Splinter Cell: Blacklist, one among a huge list of other games. No longer have access to all coop & multiplayer content. Boycotting
"Get Comfortable With Not Owning Games" - Ubisoft
It's a old game but better than some modern games. One of the best games in Far Cry series and also in that era
not even half an hour and I already got soft lock
and whose bright idea to let the enemy to able wallbang you with perfect aimbot
I'm a bit torn on this game. Because I like it, but I find it hard to recommend, but that might also be because I'm just pants at this game. Like I had a hard time getting any of the stealth to work. I don't know if I just suck or if I was doing something wrong or what.
But I once I couldn't get any further I just turned on some cheats and blew stuff up for the rest of the game, and that wasn't the worst experience. So I do recommend this because it's good, it's just not entirely my cup of tea. Just know that it is way more stealth focused than later Far Cry games, and stupidly difficult.
Great game!
Kind of like a blend between Crysis and Half life.
One thing though: If you are playing this in 3440x1440 like I did, you may have huge problems actually hitting anything with your guns. Other people in videos on youtube seemed to hit the enemies from a long distance. I had to practically stand right beside them!
Then it hit me like a ton of bricks: This game was written in 2004, there were no screens in ultrawide back then. Maybe the targetting code in the game calculates the drift of bullets and targetting line from normal old screens with 4x3 aspect ratios and a lot lower resolutions that were common in 2004.
So i turned down the resolution to 1920 x 1080 and it feels like the targetting and hitting suddenly became a lot easier, problem solved :-)
O primeiro Far Cry da história e feito pela Crytek e não pela Ubi!!!!
To play with cheats

Very hard game, even on the lowest difficulty, but still fun to play and a nice story

UPDATED REVIEW || I FINISHED THE GAME
**I live in Palestine with constant actual war; This game has caused me more stress than the actual war.
I'm mainly disappointed because this isn't the chill relaxing atmosphere of Far Cry that I was expecting (from playing FC3,4), it was constant stress, each and every single level was a pain to finish, especially because the devs were obsessed with handing rpg's to monsters.
The way levels are made are just brutally hard, the monsters are aimbot, they cause me stress and they take annoyingly too many bullets to die those big bastards.
Lastly, the story... :| I'm out of words...

Initial Review
**I'M WRITING THIS WHEN IM 2 OR 3 MISSIONS IN | 3 HOURS**
I put medium difficulty and it was still annoyingly hard, not challengingly hard, but annoying.
Dialogues are worse than the physics and the graphics of the game (compared to games of its age).
It's emptier than I thought, I didn't know crafting and collecting herbs and stuff wasn't always in Far Cry, so thus far it feels kinda stale.
I'm having just as much fun as I anticipated, not much. Just wanted to play to pay respects for the franchise, and I'm not sure I'm doing that.
For 2004, this game was ahead of it's time, especially thanks to the fact that it was developed on a new game engine (at the time), and it was a dedicated PC release.
The combat is surprisingly fun, with projectile based weapons, some level of destructible environments, and a functional physics engine. I noticed all sorts of surprising attention to detail all over the game as well.
It's a mostly linear campaign with levels and checkpoints, but there's a wide array of ways to approach most situations, and whatever weapons you decide to carry can make a big difference. Very frequently you will run into wide open sections with multiple pathways to the objective. There are functional stealth mechanics, although they can be a bit clunky. One thing that I like is that when you engage a group of enemies, you have to keep in mind that if you're not deliberate, someone is likely to run and call for help, trigger an alarm, shoot off a flare to call in helicopter backup, and so-on. And there are ways to prevent this, such as by locating and destroying their radios, blowing up the generators that power the alarm system, killing whoever's running for help, or just by taking out everyone with a suppressed weapon before anybody spots you. There are varying stages of 'alertness' that enemies can have, and it's even possible to hide and wait for them to lose aggro after being spotted. Though frustratingly enemies often have eagle-vision, and can spot you further away than you can even see them sometimes.
Some sections can be frustrating to get through, and while the level design is generally quite good, certain areas can be pretty unfair and you'll have to rely on RNG and several attempts to get things right. I played on 'Challenging' difficulty however, so I was kinda asking for that. The non-human enemies are less fun to fight than the others in my opinion.
The game is also surprisingly long, although I feel that it makes up for it with how variable the environments and encounters can be. The story is not all that impressive, but it's more of a backdrop anyways. The dialogue can be a bit goofy as well, and the cutscenes are jarring and don't mesh well with the gameplay.
Graphically, the game holds up great, but I played on 4K with the mods that allow widescreen and whatnot, along with the fixes for certain bugs introduced in patch 1.4. I followed a guide on Steam to figure that out.
Geeked Up Reviews: 3.5/5
Played through separately on GOG, clocked in at approx. 8 hrs.

when i have 5 years old i play this game and and i will play forever
took me longer than expected, ive skill issue, awesome game!
Far cry one was kinda fun, but also frustrating game as well. is more high tech compare to the other far cry games. the environment was kinda nice, story meh from what i remember (was in 2020 i played). The hit and miss im going to metion is the enemy. I play on the hardest always with games (one exception so far while writing is resident evil) and boy the enemy are so deadly and wont miss (if you dont like unfair difficulty, dont play on hardest) so cover and reflex is needed if playing on hardest. hold up otherwise pretty well.
Good old classic. It's quite lenghty.
its crash every time i try to open it!!!! FIX IT!!!!!!!
Far Cry was the first video game I played, and it left a lasting impression. I vividly remember playing it on an old, underpowered PC during my 9th-grade years. My routine was to attend early morning Church communion classes, then hurry back home, eager to dive into the game. Those were truly memorable times.
The missions were challenging, and the creatures were genuinely terrifying. The game featured tough, imposing soldier enemies with that classic American, muscular look.
However, it was the background music that truly set the atmosphere, adding an eerie, suspenseful tone that permeated every scene. I’m grateful to Crytek for publishing such an exceptional game, and I hope the next Far Cry installment introduces non-human foes like the iconic Trigens once again.
My gamer life started when I was 5 y.o. with Zuma, after some time to my list added Cs 1.6,NFS Most Wanted, Prince of Persia and Far Cry. It was one of the beautiful and cherished moment in my life and all of that is because of my father. Even now I remember how I played this game with much more enthusiasm than any other played now. I liked to feel the forgotten emotions, it was amazing. I recommend this one and others that I highlighted in my review to everyone who only start their gamers life and for many others who already don't remember how they started their way.
