A master-class in how a free-form game must be made.
I am already a fan of the Prince of Persia games, however, Warrior Within will always stay close to my heart due to its vast environment, gritty theme, compelling story and an intimidating villain in the form of the Dahaka.
Has its fair share of bugs, but consistently saving using new save files (and not overwriting them) will ensure smoother gameplay.
its my childhood favorite game ( trilogy as a whole series ) and playing this after 20 years and still remember the combos =) i hope i will play it after 20 years and still feel the same enjoyment
While it improves on the worst aspect of Sands of Time, the combat, it downgrades in most other regards. Story is bad, eliminating the characterization of the prince and reducing all of the female characters to sex appeal. The environments vary from a mysterious shade of gray and grayish-green (and occasionally a sepia filter), and a contrastingly vibrant shade of brown and brownish yellow. Platforming is ok but half of the game is doing the same areas over again because of backtracking. Even with fixes the game is glitchier than Sands of Time and the environment is more unstable. The camera angles for the platforming make things difficult and sometimes the fixed camera will change mid-maneuver and cause you to mess up. You get less sand tanks and they take longer to unlock, so there's less room for error. Though the feel and depth of combat is improved, it's undermined by the sponginess of the enemies. Combat still manages to feel like a chore for most of the game. They also reuse the same bad boss fight 7 times, and the other bosses are slightly different from each other. The final bosses are just annoying and unnecessarily spongy. This makes bosses more of a patience test than a challenge. My biggest issue with the game was how it felt like the game was constantly wasting my time. You have to backtrack through the game and the same areas numerous times, with there rarely ever being any shortcuts opened up. Also important to mention that to get the good ending, you need to find all health upgrades. At least one of these is missable, locked behind a wall you need to have blown up by an enemy. If you kill the enemy throwing explosives, you are locked out of getting it. The final upgrade also requires an extra backtracking trip through a large portion of the game. When it's dirt cheap it might just be worth it if you want to see the drastic difference between the two games. Otherwise, this game doesn't have much going for it outside of nostalgia value.
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within – A Darker, Bloodier Evolution
When Prince of Persia: Warrior Within was released in 2004, it marked a dramatic shift from its predecessor, Sands of Time. The bright, mystical, and fairytale-like atmosphere of the first game was replaced with a much darker, grittier, and bloodier tone. This sequel embraced a more mature, brutal, and violent aesthetic, filled with gore, metal music, and an almost relentless sense of doom.
Ubisoft took a bold risk in changing the tone, gameplay, and overall feel of the series, and while some fans appreciated the edgier approach, others felt it lost the charm of the original.
A Dark, Twisted Story of Fate and Desperation
The story picks up years after Sands of Time, with the Prince haunted by his past actions. Because he unleashed the Sands of Time, a terrifying guardian of fate, the Dahaka, is now hunting him down to erase him from existence. Desperate to escape his inevitable demise, the Prince travels to the Island of Time, seeking a way to rewrite destiny and prevent the Sands of Time from ever being created.
This leads to a dark, cyclical adventure, where the Prince must navigate past and present timelines, uncover secrets about fate, and battle his way through endless enemies in a desperate fight for survival. Along the way, he encounters mysterious characters like Kaileena and Shahdee, each with their own role to play in his struggle.
Gameplay – More Brutal, More Aggressive, More Repetitive
While Sands of Time focused more on platforming and puzzle-solving, Warrior Within leaned heavily into combat. Ubisoft introduced a Dual-Wielding System, allowing the Prince to pick up enemy weapons and chain together brutal combos. The free-flow combat system was expanded, letting players execute more vicious and cinematic attacks.
However, despite its depth, the combat becomes repetitive over time. Unlike modern action RPGs, there’s no skill tree or weapon progression, meaning you’re essentially using the same moves throughout the entire game.
The Time Powers from Sands of Time return, allowing players to:
✅ Rewind time to fix mistakes.
✅ Slow time to gain an advantage in battle.
✅ Perform devastating time-based attacks.
These mechanics still hold up well, making both combat and platforming feel more dynamic.
Level Design – A Maze of Backtracking
One of the most controversial aspects of Warrior Within is its repetitive level design. Instead of a linear journey, the game uses a Metroidvania-style interconnected world, where you constantly revisit areas in different timelines.
This structure can feel frustrating, as it forces a lot of backtracking. Many locations blend together, making navigation confusing at times. While it’s a bold design choice, the execution feels tedious rather than engaging.
Graphics – Aged but Still Atmospheric
Visually, Warrior Within was a massive improvement over Sands of Time, with higher-resolution textures, more detailed character models, and a darker color palette.
However, on modern systems, the graphics look noticeably dated, and the game’s art direction doesn’t hold up as well as its predecessor’s elegant, timeless style.
One infamous issue is that the game was originally designed for consoles at 30 FPS, but the PC version lacks proper frame rate adjustments. As a result, if you play at higher FPS, certain effects (like fire and particle effects) move absurdly fast, which can break immersion.
Sound & Music – A Mixed Bag
The sound design is inconsistent. Some sound effects bug out or don’t trigger properly, which can be jarring.
However, the soundtrack is noteworthy for its drastic shift in tone. Instead of the Middle Eastern orchestral themes from Sands of Time, Warrior Within features hard rock and heavy metal, including tracks from Godsmack. While this helped reinforce the grittier aesthetic, it also felt out of place for some fans.
Voice acting, on the other hand, is stronger than the first game, with a more brooding and serious Prince.
Final Verdict – A Nostalgic, Flawed Classic
Despite its flaws, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within remains a memorable and ambitious sequel. The darker tone, expanded combat, and time-travel mechanics make it a unique entry in the series. However, repetitive combat, frustrating backtracking, and outdated mechanics make it less appealing to modern players.
✅ If you’re a fan of the series or love action-platformers, it’s still worth revisiting for nostalgia.
❌ If you’re expecting deep RPG elements, modern action combat, or seamless level design, you may be disappointed.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐☆☆☆ (7/10) - Good 😊🎮
🌟 A Timeless Classic! 🌟
I've loved this game since childhood, and playing it again brings back so much nostalgia! Warrior Within was ahead of its time with its dark storyline, intense combat, and fluid parkour mechanics. The dual-wielding combat, brutal finishers, and acrobatic moves still feel satisfying today.
The atmosphere is darker and more mature compared to Sands of Time, but it perfectly fits the Prince’s struggle against fate. The soundtrack? Absolute fire! 🖤🔥 Godsmack’s music adds to the intensity.
If you’re a fan of action-adventure games, this is a must-play. Even after all these years, it still holds up! 🏹⚔️
⭐ 9/10 - The sands of time may flow, but this game remains legendary.
The "second" game I played, was visiting my relatives at the time. My brother taught me some Combo, and I fell in love with this one. The story OMG, now that's a story of a King, a leader for his people to follow, not very bright though. Still play it once in a while. Loved the game, the effects, storyline, and if you try and you might already have. Begin from the Sands of time ---> warrior within ---> the two thrones, and you will complete the journey. I heard they were working on a Re-release for prince of persia 'warrior within' with better, I'd say everything, this was released back in 2004 and I think it's about time to do it.
An old game but still nice. I am currently using a basic laptop. Graphics quality is also ok. Gameplay is also nice. Combat mechanism and Storyline are also great. Game runs smoothly.
Warrior Within came out in a time where every series was getting edgier. This game was effected by that shift for better and for worse. While I enjoy the dark tone, the hard rock music is a tad generic. However, I do think the game benefits from the darker tone through having interesting creature designs and more interesting story.
The combat is much more intricate than the first game and the bosses are more interesting. The only major downgrade was the checkpoints. When you die in Sands of Time the game would reload close to where you were, in this game some reloads made me audibly groan. The dual weapons system is interesting, but I typically found having the open hand for grabbing to be better.
This port is good, but a little glitchy. Sometimes the battle music would play long after the fight. Sometimes spikes would visibly stay up while not physically being there. Sometimes hit boxes for traps will appear before the trap does. However, the port is fairly decent and none of the glitches ruined my experience.
Esse é um dos meus jogos favoritos de PS2, mas na situação que está, isso aqui é quase injogável. Parte de mim não consegue acreditar que a Ubisoft simplesmente colocou o jogo de qualquer jeito pra pc. A câmera é P É S S I M A .
It's a really good and decent game. Ubisoft should definitely make a remake of this game after finishing with Sands Of Time Remake. I hope to Jesus Christ that they will make it.
Nostalgia kicks hard, gold times of Ubisoft, this trilogy was a gem a enjoyed playing for hundreds of hours. The ambience, the music, the combat, art design, Warrior Within was my favourite, Sands of time was kind-of-slow and The two Thrones linear but here you can go almost wherever.
Prince of Persia Warrior within is quite old, it is released in 2004 but even in 2025, this game is still fun.
Positive:
1. Interesting darker, intense story, the sequel of Sand of time.
2. Great gameplay, mc is flexible, he can parkour many types of platform, and fight in many ways, defend, roll, etc
3. Dahaka is a terrific antagonist and terror.
4. Graphic was good for 2004.
5. OST pretty good, rock n roll style...although I prefer more on traditional Persian music style.
Neutral:
Female's clothes in this game are bit skimpy, although I am ok with it but for realistic battle, might be better to put leather armor on the queen.
Negative:
1. Sometimes guide to next destination is not that clear.
2. Camera should be improved, I made some mistakes on jumping etc since camera view is not that clear.
3. This is minor, but I disagree a bit with the procedure to get Good ending. I think the procedure can be simplified like 1-3 condition instead of this many.
Until this point, I would grade this game to be high 8.5 out of 10, very good....unfortunately this build is old and has some technical issues.
Technical issues:
1. Controller not supported, I need to map controller keypad manually to be able to play with controller.
2. During loading save point, game sometimes freeze, I resolve this by turning off and on V sync.
3. Cannot jump wall to wall Descending, since game option does not have FPS setting, I resolve this by setting my NVIDIA setting to lock 60 FPS for this game.
4. No resolution available for big and wide screen resolution.
Overall for this old build with tech issues, I still recommend but with lowered grade 7/10 due to technical issues, maybe get this on sale...
Nevertheless I am impressed with this old game and reminded me how great AAA companies such as Ubisoft, EA were. Prince Persia Warrior Within is an old game (2004) but I still enjoy playing it at 2025 and now understand why many fans likes Warrior Within.
PS: Beside Prince Persia series, ghost recon, splinter cell, assassin creed etc....it is a shame that Ubisoft quality in 2020s declined a lot. I hope current Ubisoft able to become back like the good old Ubisoft again somehow...
One of my absolute favorites as a kid (nostalgia overload). Ubisoft sucks in that there's no innate controller support, but shout out to timtheenchanter5699 for creating a community layout that mimics the Playstation controls. Even though this game could legally drink in The States, it's worth playing if you're interested in acrobatic combat and platforming. It's also the best one in the series both in regards to game design and the story told. Honestly, you could just play this one and not bother with the others (Sands of Time has overly simplistic combat, The Two Thrones has really cringe cutscenes, and The Forgotten Sands was just a cash grab--of course, if you love this game you'll still enjoy the others but just don't go into them thinking they're as good as Warrior Within).
The music album came with a cool game to the side, nice.
My first Prince of Persia game and while a bit of a stressful experience, I had a great time with it. Amazing soundtrack with one of the darkest atmosphere's I ever experience in a video game. I also loved the combat system, finding fast paced but rewarding with very brutal and gory ways to finish of the enemies that the Prince encounters during his quest on the Island of Time. Only bad thing I can say about it and it's more to with playing on it a PC the game controls were made for a console so I did struggled to master the parkour but like I said it's more of playing on PC then anything else.
There is a universe where the are Prince of Persia games as good as Sonys God of War remakes, this isn't that universe... However maybe if we all scream loud enough we might get them.
Compared to its predecessor, Warrior Within looses its charm for the more visceral and gritty experience. Fine by me, I love me some oppressive and derelict ambience from time to time though the stark departure from the first game may be too jarring for some. The combat has been one of the biggest annoyances for me in Sands of Time, here it has been completely redone, for the better and its progression is more noticeable.
Wish the presentation was more varied and puzzles more challenging. The story is more plot heavy compared to SoT and unfortunately Prince and side characters get very little time to develop so they may feel shallow. The s**y designs of women in this game is... well, let's say I'm getting f**king annoyed with all the god damn gooners flooding the community page with certain screenshots of women in the game.
The game is product of its time, especially when it comes to running on modern machines, the jank is sometimes excessive, I wish it had a proper remaster, but that's not going to happen, so you'll have to check on some unofficial patches to make it work well on 1080p 60fps. Other than that it's a solid game I grew up with and I love to play it again from time to time. Don't let your gooner within take over
i dont know if i would recommend it but i def do not NOT recommend it.
i remember this game fondly but last time i played it was longer ago than some of you are old.
the game fell a bit out of time (pun intented) but beyond the bugs and clunky camera - which is an action adventure must at this point - theres a parkour system that i havent seen since. beyond maybe some assassin games.
theres an interesting story here, under the edge that was of its time. Blade, underworld, matrix. it was that time.
i can be fun. but it can also be frustrating, esp when the movement set proves to be your enemy.
play in portion. dont binch it.
if you can make it run in the first place.
ps: the max ress on this is 1024x768 so your screen will not like this.
The gameplay and controls are pretty unoptimized. Otherwise the game is a product of it's time, heavy guitar riffs and the edgiest possible main character paired with overtuned dark themes and gore. There's not much princing of persia going on and the game is lackluster of the cultural background that make other games of the franchise so immersive. The sexualization of characters in this game is frankly crazy and I would only recommend this game to people who want to find the gooner within themselves. Trying to play this game with mouse and keyboard will make you want to gouge your eyes out due to how poor the translation of controls and camerawork is from old-gen consoles to new devices. As far as the plot goes it's one of the worst I have ever seen and trying to keep up with it fried my brain. I luckily got this game for 2$ and I would not have bought it at a higher price than that.
Dude i cant even launch this game or the 3rd one. ive tried all the work arounds and nothing. The pop up box has the launch button greyed out. ive tried downloading the Pop2 thing. editing the folders and nothing. at least i only paid $2 for these. but still im very bummed about this
Absolute Masterpiece ....the memories this game hold is priceless
Ever played the first Prince of Persia and thought "damn, I wish the game was entierly more cringe, and stop having me use my brain!" then this game might be for you.
This game is SO cringe it's crazy. They tried to make the main character this emo looking guy, with a lower voice than in the first game, complete with an emo haircut and all. Then there's the music: the first one had SOME discreet electric guitar here and there, but it was mostly 'eastern' music. This one? Get ready for the most generic, poorly produced 90' 'death metal' you could think of. The gameplay is interrupted by 'satanic imagery' looking screens, when you unlock new capacities or when you die. And I say WHEN you die, because the only difficulty in the game is the poor gameplay, there is one button to mash like a dumbass to produce all the combos - special shoutout to the controller settings that are completely dumb, the MAIN button is the start button!! And to pause? Click on the left joystick of course! - but most of the action happens in the cinematics anyway so you won't get to play the game too much.
And of course how could I talk about how cringe this game is without mentionning the horrendous sexualisation of the characters? I mean, just go in the 'community' tab of the game and see for yourself. It's just tits and ass. The first thing you see of the main ennemy is her ass. Then her tits. Now don't get me wrong, I'm as much as a filthy gooner as the next gamer, but this is just absolutely unnecessary.
I wanted to play this game for an hour, I could only handle half an hour of this cringe mess. Also the graphics look worse than in the first game for some reason. How did they do that?

Phenomenal BANGER produced by Ubisoft!
Warrior Within is a massive improvement in both gameplay and storytelling. I have never played another game that twists the concept of time travel as much as this one. Witnessing the Prince's journey was an incredible experience. Getting chased by Dahaka will never get old still makes me scared xD. There are some bugs, but the game is still playable. To fix the resolution, simply use the Widescreen Fix mod from PC Wiki.
Highly recommended! Lots of love for old-school Ubisoft!
If you want to make Prince of Persia: Warrior Within more challenging with self-imposed rules, here are some ideas from Alfredo:
Combat Challenges
1. No Sand Powers – Avoid using time-rewind, slow motion, or any sand-based abilities in combat.
2. No Upgrades – Skip all health upgrades, making the Prince more fragile.
3. Single Weapon Only – Only use the default sword; never pick up secondary weapons.
4. No Block or Parry – Fight enemies without blocking, relying only on dodging.
5. No Wall Attacks – Avoid using wall jumps or wall attacks in combat.
6. No Throwing Weapons – You must fight enemies directly and never throw weapons.
Platforming Challenges
7. No Rewinding – If you fall or die, reload the last save instead of rewinding time.
8. Minimal Environmental Kills – Avoid using traps or the environment to kill enemies.
9. Speedrun Mode – Try to complete the game in as little time as possible.
10. No Extra Sand Tanks – Don’t collect additional sand tanks; only use the starting amount.
Story and Exploration Challenges
11. Hard Mode Only – Always play on the hardest difficulty.
12. Dahaka Chase Perfection – No mistakes allowed during Dahaka chase sequences.
13. No Map or HUD – Turn off any on-screen displays to navigate purely by memory.
14. Kill All Enemies – You must clear every possible enemy encounter before moving on.
15. Pacifist Mode – Only fight mandatory enemies and bosses.
One of my favourite Prince of Persia, probably because this was the first game I completed on a PC. The memories it holds cannot be replaced.
Its a great game
A Timeless Masterpiece.
Install some community made mods to make the game more enjoyable.
The time when games had the best music.. <3
Combat is greatly improved from the first. Though they went too much with combos like the devs think gamers will remember 50 combos and most combos will likely kill you anyway and most just hard to pull off or outright doesn't work so you will be recycling 3-4 simple combos.
There are game breaking bugs and glitches so you will need multiple saves for back up.
Map is horrible and useless.
It's easy to get lost specially when you get to the mid game.
Checkpoints can be very horrendous and annoying.
Free camera is clunky
Soundtrack is pure bliss though
Great game from the times when games were still great.
The most boring part! Meow
This game is fantastic if you can find where you should go!
I was lost for at least 8 hours of this game!
need remaster of this gold
Nostalgia !! Very good game
Yes, Ubisoft used to make great games
9/10 BEST PRINCE OF PERSIA GAME
It's great fun on the Steam Deck, although I had to tweak the controls a bit.
The graphics aged really well and the platforming is fun. The Dahaka chases are intense and get your adrenaline up. The combat is also pretty fun and much more varied than in Sands of Time, but for me it did get repetitive around like 60% of the game.
The story is pretty bad to be honest (it's so full of plot holes and inconsistencies).
Game is great. but the camera angles constantly changing is AWFUL. Like WTF, Ubi please remaster this shit. Also, make sure to run it on 60 Hz instead of 144; you make encounter some bugs if you don't (especially with the ropes)
Cool Game 👍
Still holds up and is just as fun as it was when I played it on the ps2. some minor bugs here and there, but nothing that cant be fixed by setting the max frame rate to 60 (which fixes most of the bugs people have been running into), turning off fog, or just restarting the game.
I won't lie, this entry seems to be a little buggier than the other two (Sands of Time and Two Thrones), but setting the max frame rate to 60 or less (as previously mentioned) should fix it. some general advice for this and the other two games: have 3 saves instead of overwriting the same one over and over again.
A childhood favorite of mine that I was able to replay after over 10 years. I was never able to get the true ending to this game as a kid, so it felt great being able to finally see it at my own hands all these years later.
P.S: if you're playing with controller, you'll sometimes need to re-customize your inputs upon loading it up as the game doesn't always recognize that a controller is being used. if that issue persists, just exit and relaunch the game. otherwise, spending a minute to get the controller config to work is small price to pay to enjoy this blast from the past.
This was the best game in the series but this version is broken and unplayable without significant mods and changes. Even with mods the game is still glitchy and will break saves.
This game was truly ahead of its time and one of a kind. Visuals are somewhat dated but for its time they were top notch. What this game has that no other has managed to pull of since was combining the PoP level of creative platforming/puzzle solving with an open world approach. Even this games successor (and predecessor) while great were far more linear. There simply hasn't been a game like this before or since. Just get it. This game deserves a remaster. Overall 8/10
Graphics - 5/10
- Dated by today's standards.
+ Visuals are clear and you can tell what things are and see the environmental navigation cues
Sound - 8/10
+ Ambient music is a good blend of metal with middle eastern influence
+ Dahaka chase schenes with Godsmack are good if you like Godsmack
- Sometimes the music bugs out.
Gameplay - 9/10
+ Clean platforming combined with open world
+ Amazing combat system
- Every so often the controls have you do something stupid you didn't intend, but you have time rewind.
One of my favourites from the POP franchise, I love the dark and gritty feel opposed to the previous The Sands of Time. Super fun to play, excellent combat elements taking out enemies with a variety of cool combos, plus all the wall running, puzzle solving and time altering features you expect from a POP game.
nostalgia
It's great coming back to some childhood classics!
Very good
Even though it's a good game the glitches might drive you crazy. And what's even crazier is the game has been released almost 20 years ago and some of the game breaking glitches hasn't been fixed yet. Don't forget to save your game before the last boss (in the sandwatch room) because there's a glitch that doesn't let you go to the present and trigger the last boss fight :/
terrible steering
terrible camera
poor controller support
unskippable cutscenes
enemies are damage sponges that take half an hour to kill
generally its frustrating as hell, wouldn't recommend
The best game in the series for me. Good story, good platforming, the best combat. The only thing that bothered me was the design of the female characters. It's too much, too over the top and just doesn't fit. Some more Dahaka chase scenes would have been nice.
