It's cute. Fun to play for a few hours. Cozy game for sure.
I’ve managed to 100% lemon cake after grinding this game for days on days straight. And I will never touch this game again. !!SPOILER!! - Please read at a caution
TDLR:
Pro: Cozy bakery/cafe game that you run and upgrade. Art is very cute like a coloring book. Relaxing music. Repetitive gameplay.
Cons: EXTREMELY GRINDY GAME (if you want all the achievements), and very repetitive gameplay
Alright, I’m going to breakdown this game because from one glance, it looks like a cute cozy cafe game but at the same time, I have never grinded on a cozy game like this trying to get the last achievement (10K coins achievement) for so many days.
First of all, I’m someone who does not care about achievements. Especially if I had to grind for them or search the ends of the earth for them. So, why the hell did I end up doing it anyways, you might ask? Well, it’s because I managed to unlock half of them throughout getting to level 20. And it was because I really enjoyed the game in the beginning. I actually played a few levels of this game on my switch before I moved to pc.
The beginning game starts out with one oven, sugar, and flour. Super simple recipes, no greenhouse additions, and just a table and two chairs. Simple right? Yes, well for the beginning. But every time you level up, you unlock one recipe. You can gain xp for levels by cleaning up spills with the broom, mixing ingredients in the bowl, serving food to customers, cleaning up tables, when your baked good finishes cooking in the oven, petting cows/chicken (when they’re dirty), and watering plants (when they’re dry and changed color). You do not gain xp from placing firewood in the oven. And you do not lose money or xp if you have to throw something away.
Every upgrade costs money, just any other bakery game. Each upgrade being more expensive than the next (hence grinding the game).
But once you unlock all the better upgrades like magic broom (cleans up spills for you), all three ovens + long lasting firewood, rail cart (that you can put up to 4 greenhouse ingredients that will move it to the kitchen), sprinkler, assistant (ghost), kitchen window, sprint +, brush, and display counters (5), it gets into the grind territory.
Why isn’t there an achievement for how many bugs you catch? For the amount of times I’ve caught bugs every time inspector mustache came in, and criticized how many bugs I caught, I feel like there should be an achievement for this lol
When you hit level 40, your xp bar disappears.
If you’re playing this game for funsies, then I think you’ll enjoy it, maybe. That is if you like repetitive games where you turn off your brain. But for me, I'm glad that I'm done with the hell lol. Final rating: 6/10. I'll still recommend it though. I'm sure others may like it more than I did.
it scratches my brain just right. soothing and repetitive with just enough variety that it keeps you interested. levels/upgrades are easy to understand so even a casual gamer like me is able to progress easily. 10/10
i like this game and i wish there were controls designed for controller not just keyboard
Cute cozy bakery game i wish I had the patience for the controls. I find the WSAD keys a little jarring and if you combine the time limit it can be a little tricky. The graphics are cute though. So you are compelled to play even if you struggle
I love the amount of choice you have in creating your menu, and how to increase efficiency. Just a fun game.
Cute
The controls are extremely clunky and frustrating - I only managed about 15 mins of game play before becoming too frustrated to continue. I can only imagine how much worse it is with more complex recipes.
love it
I really have been enjoying lemon cake. Excited to 100% the game. I think it is very digestable and relaxing but the lunch rush adds a run pep in your step. Normally with newer games I am curious to see what they'll add but I love this game and I do not think it needs additional things. I think it is well balanced.
love :)
I really wanted to love this game but never have I gotten so bored so quickly. I agree 100% with another reviewer (Young Atlas) about having the thought, "why am I doing this to myself?" Their whole review is spot on. Unable to return past 2hrs but that's fine, the devs still deserve support, but I am clearly not the intended audience for this game.
Just a place where I turn off my brain and bake cute pastries. Nice cozy game
Very cute, the slower pacing at first is nice. I did struggle a bit with moving using keys but that is probably a me problem.
This game is super addicting. You think it's just some cozy game, you thought wrong nar. It's cute and fast paced.
Very nice and cozy game took me 21 hours to complete it with all achievement
8/10
There is not much story
Characters simple and charming
Game play engaging and can get fast paced
Cute art style that is consistent
Didn't encounter any noteworthy bugs
Controls could be better(occasional difficulties picking up items)
Very wholesome game, repetitive and fun
I love this game so much, its so cute and very fun! i def will play this game a lot from now
One of the best cozy time management games.
I've finished this game in its entirety and collected all the achievements! It's such a cute game and the atmosphere feels warm. It gets nicer and easier when you've upgraded everything.
Pros:
- PETS! AND THREE OF THEM!
- ANIMALS
- There's a BIG variety of pastries that you unlock as you level up.
- You can change the menu from day to day basis
- There's character customization and the accessories are so cute!
- Ghosts (not scary ones if you hate them)
- Catch bugs to earn more coins
- The recipes are always onscreen, you don't need to memorize them
Cons:
- The menu. I have to be aware of the combo of every pastry I put in it so that I can get a 100% tip. I'm sure it is a part of the game but it can sometimes get a bit annoying especially when you have some pastries on the menu for too long and it affects the tip percentage.
- When it comes to game controls. Boy. I don't know how many times I miss when trying to pick up ingredients. It's challenging, and I don't really know if it's better to play with a controller than a mouse/keyboard combo.
- Getting the 10,000 coin achievement is incredibly grindy. I think my menu combos sucked but I also stopped caring about getting the highest possible tip percentage because you just want to get the achievement over with.
Overall, a nice game. I remember I couldn't get enough of it when I first bought it. If you don't mind the cons, then by all means, go ahead and try it!
pretty visually and enjoyable at first, however it quickly becomes very repetitive and grindy. only tolerable if you play a few in game days every now and then.
Very fun, chill game of running a cat bakery.
abandoned game; grindy :( come backkkkk
Baking go brrrr!
Cute little bakery game, if you're looking for optimisation and high stakes in your games, this is probably not for you. If you want a simple game to have a chill time with (and maybe talk to your friends in the background) this is an easy recommendation from me :D
Lemon Cake is a charming indie game that delivers exactly what it promises—a cute, simple, and relaxing experience. While it has its share of minor flaws, it’s an enjoyable title overall and worth checking out. Overall, I'd give it a 7/10.
This game shines as a pick-up-and-play experience, perfect for an hour or two at a time. It’s designed to be approachable, with a bite-sized gameplay loop that works well for casual sessions. Although completing the game takes longer, its simplicity means you can easily return after a break without feeling lost. That said, the repetitive nature of the gameplay can start to feel grindy if you try to power through it all at once.
One thing to note is that Lemon Cake doesn’t have a major story or intense dialogue. If you’re looking for a narrative-driven experience, this might not be the game for you. However, this lack of complexity complements its simple, pick-up-and-play nature perfectly. There’s no need to worry about forgetting key plot points if you take a long break from the game. It’s also an excellent choice when you just want to turn off your brain for a bit. The low-pressure gameplay lets you focus solely on keeping your bakery in order, making it a relaxing escape.
The graphics are absolutely adorable, with a cozy art style that fits the game’s relaxing tone. You even have the ability to transform your café into a cat café— and yes, you can pet the cats! That alone is a huge win in my book!
The gameplay itself is simple yet satisfying, with just enough challenge to keep you engaged. The unlockable upgrades are well-paced, giving a sense of progression without overwhelming you. Each upgrade feels meaningful, encouraging you to keep going. Even the purely decorative bedroom unlocks are clearly labeled as such, so you know what to expect. However, once all unlockables are acquired, the game’s progression slows considerably. I found myself with nothing to spend my money on and still had several levels to grind before reaching 100% completion. Adding more things to buy or speeding up the experience gain would address this issue.
While the game is delightful, there’s room for improvement. The most noticeable problem is the hitboxes for ingredients. Whether they’re too large or misplaced, it’s unclear— but it’s frustrating when you keep picking up the wrong item. The system is tied to your character’s position, so precise mouse placement doesn’t help. It’s something you eventually adapt to, but it feels clunky early on.
Another minor issue is with the cats: if two cats are on the cat tree at the same time, you can only pet one of them. It doesn’t affect gameplay very much, but for someone who loves petting every cat, it’s a little disappointing. Lastly, the beehive unlock’s description mentions being careful not to step on the bees, but this feature doesn’t seem to exist. Whether it was removed or a glitch, it’s misleading since the game still mentions it.
Character customization is quite limited, though it does include a darker skin tone and a couple of natural hairstyles, which is nice to see.
Despite these quirks, Lemon Cake is an endearing game that’s worth playing for its cozy charm and enjoyable mechanics. If you’re looking for something relaxing to unwind with, it’s a delightful addition to your library— just don’t expect perfection.
Was fun initially but got kinda grindy...reached lvl 15 and uninstalled :(
I really wanted to like it, but commands remind me of PS1 games and the gameplay is grindy and repetitive. I can see this being a cute game for people who just have maybe 30 minutes to play once in a while, any longer sessions and the repetitiveness kills any enjoyment.
Fantastic game, its a very cute art style that my girlfriend fell in love with. I think the developer did a great job with what they had available in the game. The people leaving negative reviews saying its "too grindy" would be the same people to complain it being "too easy" if adjustments were made. Its a game that keeps you busy.. sounds like job well done to me. Fantastic game again.
Such a fun cozy cafe sim!
Things done well:
- So cute and cozy, beautiful graphics, and kitties!!!!
- Really well paced action for the most part, really enjoy the grind and feel everything has just the right lifespan.
- Upgrades are well paced and make me want to grind the game more, really enjoying those. I feel like they give just enough buff to satisfy but still leave room for the "but I could have more"
- This is more neutral, but the NPCs posing obstacles can be fun, but makes navigating the cafe floor really frustrating during rushes. Most days it's fine, but I have turned the game off once or twice because of this one. Sometimes, it works out well I'm able to find a little loophole and I'm really proud of myself, so I guess interpret this one as you will depending on your play style.
Things to improve/frustrating
- there's a glitch where if you are sweeping the floor when the inspector comes, then you get stuck in the animation and have to restart the game to play the mini game
- there's a glitch where if you water the cocoa tree too close to the water spout, it'll water then put it back which is frustrating during rushes
- the grab box for the window between the cafe and kitchen is really small, and it's probably fine as it is, it's just frustrating because when it looks like I'm standing right in front of it, it doesn't register.
Thank you so much for the wonderful game, it's been an amazing break for after school and work. Just enough brain power to want to progress, but no super intense story or dialogue that would bog my brain down. Cute and fun!!!!!!!!!
Cozy and very simple low pressure cooking game. I don't see myself replaying it a lot, but it scratches an itch. I easily spent several hours playing it the first time I opened it up. It helps that the art, music and concept are all extremely adorable.
I was disappointed with this game. I won't recommend it simply because there are many games of a similar genre that do it better and even look better. It's missing any kind of story line to make me care enough to progress. Playing just ends up being an endless grind to gain achievements, achievements that don't even matter much or even make game play more enjoyable. Lots of the mechanics are inaccurate and awkward so it's impossible to be more efficient/faster which is the whole premise of a game like this. I was hoping for a newer diner dash/cake mania/kitchen scramble feel but if that is what you are looking for this will leave you wanting.
it's a lot but it's fun
I love a good restaurant-themed game, but held off on Lemon Cake until Steam Cooking Fest 2024 because it looked a little too simple and repetitive for me. It is, but it's also a great game for certain types of cozy gamers (see "Recommendations" below for the tldr).
Story
In Lemon Cake, you breathe new life into a semi-haunted bakery by assembling pastries, sweeping up flour spills, and serving customers to earn enough money to unlock upgrades like window displays, more ovens, a greenhouse, a farm, and decor items. That's it. That's the story.
Art + Character Customization
First, points to the devs for creating such a unique art style for the game; everything from the pastries to the rosy-cheeked customers to the cows clearly belong in the same world. That world just happens to be a children's book, which is... not my speed.
Due to the cutesy art and limited character customization options (which include a ton of hair colors, a few skin tones, and a few clothes that look either itchy or impractical for a kitchen), your avatar looks like a kid no matter how hard you try to make it look like an adult.
Game Play
Each day plays in 2-3 phases:
1. Cafe Management. You make pastries by selecting a recipe, combining ingredients in a bowl, transferring the result into the oven, stoking the flames with firewood, and waiting. You stock your window displays with pastries and open for business. Customers shuffle to tables, you click to take their orders, bake their orders, serve the orders, and clean the dirty plates. In between, you replenish your window displays. Rinse and repeat until end of day.
2. Upgrades and Recipe Management. After reviewing your financials, you can purchase upgrades and set your menu for the next day. Upgrades are unlocked in three trees and become increasingly expensive, so you'll need to do a lot of grinding to unlock everything. Your menu gains buffs and debuffs based on variety, item type, and time; you're penalized for selling the same things every day, rewarded for adding gluten-free options, and generally encouraged to strategize and experiment to earn more tips.
3. Possible Minigame. Occasionally, you have a minigame like catching bugs to appease a ghostly food inspector. Most of the time, you retire to bed.
Review
On a stress scale of 1 (Cozy Caravan) to 10 (Cook, Serve, Delicious!), I'd say Lemon Cake might peak at a 3 during Lunch Rush. Your friendly bakery ghost warns you about customer satisfaction and burning pastries, but you have the most patient customers and forgiving oven in the history of café management games.
If I hadn't previously played Magical Bakery, I might have been more charmed by stoking the oven with firewood or by your avatar's plodding pace. As it is, I mostly found "cooking" to be tediously repetitive and hated that I couldn't toss ingredients into the bowl without first selecting the recipe. My frustration was amplified by the music, which speeds up a little during Lunch Rush but otherwise plays on an endless loop; it quickly goes from cute to dull to annoying.
My biggest gripe, though, is that this game -- which is available on consoles -- doesn't include controller support; it reportedly runs on Steamdeck, but refused to recognize any controller that I plugged in. Worse still, the keyboard controls are silly and your character responds slowly. If you enjoy a good survival game, the avatar's laggy and inaccurate responses will make your eye twitch.
Recommendation
I personally prefer a little crunch in my management games and more streamlined controls in my cozies, so Lemon Cake was not the game for me. But if you enjoy the art style and are looking for a low-stress repetitive task game to both zone out with and grind in, then this is a quaint little bakery to lose yourself in. But maybe pick it up on a different platform.
absolutely adorable!
Gets boring really fast. Way too grindy and repetitive.
The game has a charming style to it.
The slow-pace and floaty controls make it frustrating to play. When interacting with something I expect my reach to extend out further but it'd have to be almost ontop of me. Having to wait on customers to mosey on over to the dining room table so that I can take my order, taking their sweet time to be seated.
The majority of the shop upgrades at face value seem to be cosmetic, locked behind a research tree and progression. There is not enough description to make a good judgment on what something does before you purchase it. IE: the first item you're forced to purchase is a display stand. You can put food on it, but you are not told until after purchase that customers can come grab food off of it, thats nice to know.
Last complaint would have to be messes, it feels tacked on and like an unnecessary time-waster that doesn't interact with the rest of the game. I've gone to sleep and started a new day and watched a mess appear infront of a unlit oven. So dirt just appears, slows your movement and can only be swept up if you walk to the broom stand, grab the broom, walk to the mess and sweep, as opposed to just- walking up to the mess cleaning it with whatever I have in my backpocket. Theres no problem with pulling out plates, trays, or bowls out from nothing so why is the broom an exception?
The game is cute and fun. I enjoy baking my own cake and running my own cafe. The gameplay is simple: work, get money, and upgrade your cafe, kitchen or farm. The more you sell a cake, the better the cake rating becomes. There is definitely some improvement like putting the fruit further, so I don't pick the wrong one. I like the customisation, but I wish I could do the same for the room.
Overall, if you do not mind something a bit grindy, this game is all right. 7/10
this game had me hooked for a whole week so i'd say it's worth it
Super cute art style and sweet story.
The game is so cozy and charming. I feel so calm when I play.
This game is easy and fun. I play during my free time and in the beginning of the game it is easy to upgrade and follow the plot. I have only made it to about half the upgrades and the story line is very cute as well. I think this is the perfect game for someone who wants to enjoy some relaxing game time after a long day.
thumbs up
Very cute! Keeps me entertained, would reccomend!
Cute lil bakery game! <3
I just wish there were a few more things to spend money on to make the grind for the final achievement (earn 10,000 coins) a little less grindy. Another section of garden maybe; with vegetables and we could have some savory baked goods as well.
so cute and fun
The game is cute, and simple enough that pretty much anyone could pick it up. I find using the mouse instead of the spacebar to interact feel a bit more natural for me, personally, and the controls don't even need to be changed for that style of play. If you're looking for something cute and simple to waste a few hours on, this is the game. It takes longer than you think to unlock everything, but getting there is a lot of fun at least.
super cosy cafe esc game
Very cute and cosy game, become obsessed very easily - I loooooove!!!
*My Rating: 8/10*
*Graphics n Visuals*
The graphics are super cute, very cel-shaded style, but in 3D!
There aren't live lighting, but it does show the time of day with turning the graphics into the lighting colour it needs
*Gameplay*
Gameplay mechanic is very simple, prepare ingredients, bake the goods, place them on the displays, open the store, bake goods for table customers, and restock display tables
*Music*
The music is cute, and delightful, however pretty repetitive.
*Audio*
The sound effects are cute and popping.
*Suggestions*
- It would be nice to hire 1 or 2 restocking persons who bakes
the same recipes and places them on display tables, that way
we don't stress too much for the display tables.
- And it would be cool if we had helpers with restocking the furnaces too
overall a good game that needs updates or a sequel
