An Okay Yet Genuine Horror Game
As an indie game with a truly unique twist and genuine story, I cannot help but support it. Spotlighting an unsung job of an mortician can bring appreciation and perspective even if in a sadly horror or negative setting. The morgue owner is definitely the standout character in their pragmatism and moral complexity which is refreshing for an indie character. Not to diminish the genuine struggles of the protagonist in being caught up with supernatural demons and their own. Its premise and story make this definitely standout with a touch of body horror.
Yet, I am underwhelmed by the horror and gameplay experience. While I think more random events are needed to truly push the atmosphere and uncertainty, it is more the predictability of its scares and structure that deflate the horror. Specifically, the scripted events that prevent interaction and are unskippable or unavoidable which can feel more slow than scary. The only threat in the game aside from losing time is making an incorrect deduction or process in the end. Being slow or inefficient in the core gameplay loop of embalming has no strong consequence so the game tends to optimize for speed than careful deliberation. This can be an okay design, but makes embalming feel like a sloppy process and perhaps unintentionally disrespectful to the deceased. Without mechanical penalties, each session or shift is slowly waiting until enough clues are acquired without much tension in between.
A disappointing aspect is deducing the demon and the corpse. By the second sigil, it is usually enough to deduce the demon and maybe take a risk with the corpse. Doing all 3 corpses is intended and puts enough pressure to make the final choice meaningful. Although learning the correct ticks and signs makes the learning process still on the repetitive side. As a funny sidenote that I played this on December, I keep getting Santa Claus as a corpse which was immersion breaking although still appreciated. While I am disappointed in it, I do see it more for its tone and better difficulty for an horror title which I think achieves it goal.
I did play this on SteamDeck and it works okay. The only notable issue is the graphics seems to be slightly broken that can make body marks hard to spot. Aside from some minor control and UI issues, my only personal peeve is how slow the gurney can turn, realism be damned. Other than that, playing it was smooth experience.
It pains me to say my overall experience was just okay given the high hopes I had for it. I do still recommend and support this game for unique and creative effort in a deluge of jump scare horror games.
One of the better indie horrors I've played. A lot of fun, and a lot of replayability.
I really want to play this game but it keeps lagging/stuttering on my end, i tried to change up some settings only for it to not work out and it's hard to complete Shift 1 due to it. It could mainly be on my end though so i wish Steam had a mixed rating.
From what i did play, i loved the setting and atmosphere as it's a pretty unique setting though again i wish i was able to get it working on my end.
Love the game! very methodical and cool concept. My only gripe is there is a glitch where the girl with the blond mohawk. That's how the steam discussion described it. She locks you in the normal shift as you can't record the mole on her face. However still got my achievements and it's fixable by starting a new shift. sucks if your trying to get braggin rights though. ;))
It's a lot of fun and there are very good Jumpscares
Having never really explored the horror genre before, this was early on my list of games played this October. Long story short, I thoroughly enjoyed it! The early runs were the best, as to be expected, but I've now replayed through enough to get the 6 endings, and I'm currently looking to finish up the achievements, so that should give you an idea of how much I liked it.
Essentially, you'll be doing the same tasks over and over as you perform your duties as a mortuary assistant. The scares are varied enough and not always obvious, and there are several haunts that are interesting. The game actually has a decent storyline with some secrets to uncover.
No bugs experienced with my plays, but I have seen a few in some streams I've watched. All in all, a solid game!
I am an actual, licensed, funeral director/mortician. I really appreciate all of the thought and research that went into the embalming procedures in this game. Everything, for the most part, is accurate. I get that it's a game and not everything will be 100%, but this is very close. Well done!
The game plays well, and I find myself getting immersed in the embalming part, and keep getting possessed. lol
Nota : 8/10
I liked the story and the jumpscares. Plus it was fun to watch Mark play it and i wanted to play it myself
LOVE LOVE LOVE this game! I wish there was more DLC coming. The jump scares and grandma cussing me out from outside the window because I wouldn't let her in..bitch if you're cold you should have brought a jacket. That's a you problem.
I spent many fun hours streaming this game!
Do things over and over again while you wait for jumpscares. It was fun embalming the first two bodies, but it becomes a chore after that.
Dull as dishwater. Click things in a specific order to "play a game". Occasional meh jump scare....just terrible.
Looks pretty bad overall, but I don't mind so much if there's something fun to engage with.
Maybe it does get better if you persist, but you'll need to write down every step of the embalming process, and go hunting for the steps every time you start. Personally found this very un-fun so refunded.
it's fun, sometimes certain bugs are annoying and you have to reset your shift but other than that it's entertaining but I would recommend to buy it on sale not for a full price
Good play, the game is interesting and also somewhat challenging. id play it again and again
Very good horror game bit tricky to tell which body is the possessed one I just took a guess because that body's storage door kept banging all the time. Only reason I still failed was because I had all the right sigils but in the wrong order so the guy said you banished the wrong demon. Wouldn't really want to go through all that all over again. Still recommend tho.
I love a good horror game/movie/ANYTHING always have, always will. This game is GOOD. The horror aspect to this game is just lovely. The actual "work" that you do in the game is also very interactive (of course) and fun to do. The whole figuring out which body to burn is so fun. There's always a moment of "What if I got it wrong?" The fact that there's different endings is also always a plus; when there's numerous different aspects to a game sometimes it's made poorly but the developers did a tremendous job on this game.
Love this game, still get some good scares when my brain goes into auto mode and something jumps at me. I even want to get all achievements because I love this game so much.
this game is so scary i have to take it in baby steps 12/10 would recommend
It's good for a few scares, also for teaching you the symbols of many demons in reality. The game does give a warning which it should considering it uses real symbols.
At first I wasn't having that much fun because I was so scared of this game (I am a big chicken) But now that I am playing it with people in call with me and we are focusing on achievement hunting it has been really fun. I like that you can adjust the haunting levels to your liking depending on how brave you're feeling especially.
sa ma fut in norocu lu ala care la facut!!! Panarama la fel ca jocu! dute la puscarie!!!!! si ia-l si pe flesica cu tine!
Gaaawdddf this game. We played on Halloween night, and what was cool is that the mortuary was decorated in Halloween decor. Just a really cool and festive touch. I found that just embalming was super cathartic and I guess maybe that’s my weirdness but I was having more fun than the fast paced jump scare portion ha! Only because I’m a big wuss. The jump scares are fantastic, literally leapt out of my seat at one point. So if you’re into getting scared but also embalming it’s definitely for you! The puzzles are really cool too.
games good but theres alot of bugs(mainly freezing) and they are not clear on how you find out which one is the right one to burn
great plot, really scary, good graphics.
Exellent horror adventure. very realistic corpse embalming (as far as i can say).
Very dense atmosphere, story and characters are very touching and gripping right from the start.
There are jump scares, but very good ones, if not the best ones i've ever seen.
There are no quick time events, no time pressure and you can't die (mostly..)
But be aware to face extreme horrors and bloody violence.
Every single play through will be different, also do not miss all the 6 different endings.
Inventory and interaction handling is a bit clunky and unusual, but you get used to it.
I like how the scares are never the same, and you don't expect them, usually I don't jump playing scary games, but this game made me jump a few times
Good scares, but way to complicated. Its fun to ply at night wit the kids or gf/wife. But to ply to beat the game, good luck. Bttr go online or YT for guide.
It's a very creepy and uncomfortable game when it's at its best!
Alone with the dead... Embalm corpses, banish demons, save your soul.
Story
You play as Rebecca Owens, who has just graduated from mortuary school. She gets a job at a haunted mortuary. The game is very short. Once you've learned the game, you can get through a night shift in 30 minutes, but before that it takes up to 1,5h maybe to complete a shift. However, you have to play several shifts to find out everything about the story, because the events that happen at the mortuary are random. The story was quite interesting.
Gameplay
The gameplay is all about embalming bodies. There are always 3 bodies per shift and one of them is possessed by a demon. You have to figure out which one is possessed and then burn the correct body. There is a whole procedure that you have to learn about this that I am not going to go into. Figure it out yourself, more fun that way, but remember not to take too long or you'll get possessed and lose. There is a gauge you can change in the settings called Haunt System Aggressiveness, which is the difficulty level. The more aggressive the gauge is set to, the less time you have to perform the shift before you get possessed.
Environment & Scares
The entire game takes place in the same place, the mortuary. Except when there are short temporary flashbacks that takes you to other places where you learn more about the story. These events have predetermined scares. The atmosphere at the mortuary is very well done. It really is an eerie atmosphere. The scares outside the story events are completely random.
The scares are really good though. They don't just consist of cheap jump scares where you are startled by a loud noise. There are also scares where you just see a ghost standing and looking at you through a window or behind a bookshelf, which really creeped me out. I was constantly tense and on guard while playing this game.
Me, my brother, and two friends played through the first shift of the game on a 100 inch projector screen with surround sound in a pitch black room. We really got the best horror experience you can get from this game.
Visual Design & Sound Design
Both the visual design and sound design are well made. The ghosts and the bodies really creeped me out many times. As I said before, it's not just cheap loud bangs that scare you. It can be unpleasant music or a voice whispering to you, and more.
Constructive Criticism
There isn't much to complain about in this game. What was a bit annoying was when you have to control the gurney, because the mouse sensitivity changes and becomes very slow. Why I don't know. It's a minor thing though. The game is most unpleasant the first few shifts. After a while you have gone through all the major events and if you then get the same event the next shift you know what will happen which makes the game less scary. The game also gets a bit repetitive after a while as the gameplay is all about the procedure of embalming the bodies. I also found it very easy to identify which body that was possessed after a couple of shifts. I always guessed right. I tried a shift on the hardest difficulty and managed to embalm all the bodies but time ran out and I lost. That was the only time though. I played about 8 shifts total.
The Verdict
The Mortuary Assistant is a very good horror game that kept me interested for the first four shifts or so. Then it got a little repetitive. It's a very creepy and uncomfortable game when it's at its best though! If you're a fan of horror, I highly recommend this game, especially if it's on sale. Don't hesitate, buy!
Rating: 8/10
Moderately spooky game. The atmosphere is just right. Every scare is telegraphed before it happens, so the jump scares are not that cheap, but still effective. I like the ones where you turn around and there's that pale guy just sitting on the shelf or peeking around the corner for a while. There is no fail state, so if the monsters get you, you just wake up on the floor in a short while and carry on. Once you realise that they can't hurt you, the scares lose their scariness a bit.
Gameplay gets quite tedious after a while. Playing in short bursts helps to mitigate that a bit. Every body has the same checklist you follow. You check the corpse for bruises and other markings, file the report, sew mouth shut and close the eyes, mix embalming juices, attach tubing and drain the body. Then you fill the belly with cavity fluid and clean the embalming machine. Finally wipe the face clean and done.
There are three bodies per shift, and you need to know which one is possessed by demon, by keeping an eye out for which one keeps moving on its own. Each shift has some scares that happen and after each scare you uncover another letter of the demon's name. Once you know which body is possessed and what the name of the demon is, you burn the body and that's that. The deductive element could have been more fleshed out.
A fun game, but has some serious game breaking bugs. Mine was the Old Apartment bug, where you get to the Rebecca's old apartment and there's a giant checklist telling you to gather supplies, but you can't interact with anything there, so the game is stuck.
Not the scariest game for me but it did have a few moments that got me. Its fun to play and if your want to make it better Play during the night with the lights off with quality headphones or with a home theater. I played 15$ for the game and it is so far worth it for the short time i have been playing. If your looking to kill time or a little fun this horror game is a must.
I should love this game, but it feels like its too hard to get the correct ending on a playthrough before you've played it so much that you know all the tricks and its lost all atmosphere and horror.
I think there's something to be said about getting so invested on your first playthrough and then getting crushed by the bad ending. I will certainly remember this game forever, but I'll also be forever convinced I was "right" in my first playthrough.
Legitimately scared the crap out of me, only on shift 4 and i can safely say this is one of the best horror games i have experienced. I've played a lot of scary games since i was a kid, so it takes a lot to freak me out. At one point i nearly threw my mouse at the screen, i was so scared. I'm Protestant, but i think i need to go see a priest. 10/10 would cremate possessed corpses again.
Fun little game ! The first few runs were a bit scary, but not that much. It was fun discovering the different creepy apparitions. I especially liked the mimic, the way this guy sneaks on you is pretty spooky. Sadly The Mortuary Assistant becomes quite repetitive after 3 or 4 runs. Always the same mechanics, the same apparitions, the same cinematics.
Luckily there are some hidden secrets that lead to different endings, keeping the game a bit more interesting.
I'd recommend it as an horror fan but definitely not at full price.
Close to if not the perfect idea for a horror game.
Creepy setting, great replay value, and really cool randomized scares.
Has a good overarching story as well, if u are skeptical or not big on horror games wait for a sale. Worth it just for a one off session too
This game is a delightful trip into the world of- well, death
You can play with corpses and learn about embalming.. What a fun way to kill your time?
The graphics are so good, and the jump scares aren't cheap (they're literally so scary)
I really love those sudden jumpscares (it makes me pee in my pants)
If you love embalming bodies accompanied by the sudden jumpscares and creepy-ass sounds,
this is definitely the game for you....
You would love this game until you complete all 6 endings... It's gonna get repetitive after completing these all endings...
So buy this game when it's on a sale...
Very awesome horror game, especially since it was updated. There are plenty of new bodies and even a new ending! The new ending is my favorite one because it just gives me more questions than answers about Delver...be warned: don't play in the dark
The Mortuary Assistant is a fantastic game, really entertaining and interesting! However, in my opinion, it's a bit too short, and the graphics could use some improvement. Just a slight graphics upgrade would make the experience even better. It's already a great game, though, and I hope they add more levels because I found it a bit too short overall. As for the scares, they could be improved as well since they become a bit repetitive and lose their impact quickly; you start memorizing them pretty fast. All in all, though, it's a solid game, and I’d definitely recommend it!
Great spooky game with some of the best jumpscares I've seen ever. Multiple endings adds to the replay value.
One of most disturbing game at he moment, OFC like any horror you can desensitize yourself to that by redoing many times..but before that happens...jeesus. If it would have VR mode it would shine.
Game randomizes a lot things which is extra good, not many game randomize anything..even if technically possible.
Devs: MORE please...
Maybe good for one or two hours but gets boring and repetitive quick. It does not help that all the items are in different places this is more a frustrating mechanic to me to be honest.
if you want individuality change the scares, demons, objectives even. (There are some but everything has been seen in two hours playtime, watched insym play this and I didn´t missed a lot)
Also I got a really poor performance on this game and barely reach 80fps. Maybe I come back with a DLC and like an endless mode with much more things to do. So this is a neutral rating at this point.
One of the most unique and addictive gameplay loops I've experienced in a long time. I was consistently hooked by the environmental puzzles and exploration, and I adore the way the banishment system is mixed into the embalming process.
Fragments of the story are dispersed at random as you play through each shift with up to 6 endings possible, most of which contribute to piecing together a complete understanding of what's actually happening at River Fields Mortuary. One of my favorite aspects of the game is the way it offers clues on how to unravel the mystery, even in fail states.
There are a few "mean" jump scares but I think they're mostly all earned. Some of the subject matter might be a bit upsetting for anyone with trauma stemming from the themes of drug abuse and suicide, but imo none of the content is inappropriate or in poor taste. My only other issue was two achievements seemed to be delayed but I randomly got them after completing a few other shifts. Nbd but thought I should mention.
The Mortuary Assistant is a no-brainer in any horror fan's collection. This will be an annual all 6 ending playthrough for me every October!
This is a great game, perfectly spooky and honestly really challenging to get through with all the scares. I couldn't stop laugh-screaming xD Only issue I have is that sometimes instructions/processes aren't too clear and the lack of button prompts can be troublesome, but if you spend enough time on something you'll typically get it. Great game!
This game is something else. Definitely one of the best horror games I've played. Really experimental in nature, it has a great story, tied together by many possible endings, most of which are actually linked to each other, and with one final, true ending that leaves you wanting to know more about this world (and its past). Mechanics are very interesting; really creepy stuff in there, fully immersive and captivating. I'd say this one is a must for horror fans. It has a few small flaws: I had one occasion where the gurney got stuck and I had to go back to the main menu and in again (very little progress lost, as it autosaves often); I also managed to glitch the objects screen by opening the steam overlay once, but I wasn't able to repeat the error; and the third ending is a bit harder to obtain than it says on the guides, probably due to some bug ([spoilers] if you are struggling to get it, I think what did the trick for me was embalming all three bodies before burning one, and not just two [/spoilers]. But those are minor nitpicks in an otherwise great experience. The only other thing that bothered me is that there are two achievements requiring a very repetitive gameplay loop which I'm unlikely to complete any time soon (if ever); really no need for making you go through that to 100% it (on the other hand, the speedrun achievement is very easy to get).
All in all, great game, you should definitely check it out!
Hello, folks!
Wanna play hide and seek with an entity or several of them while working as a mortician named Rebecca? No, not Rebecca Chambers. Her name is Rebecca Owens, with Melissa Medina as her VA.
Wanna try a game with multiple endings?
This is it, you get the ending based on what you do throughout the shift, so thread carefully, and mind the jumpscares. The entities are dying to tease you around the morgue.
Just don't take too long, trust me. You don't wanna know what happens when you take too long.
X3
Feeling lonely lately?
Well you're not alone in this game, because there will always be something that constantly peek-a-boo you just for fun, whenever you feel bored or tired.
Just at the right time when you least expect it.
Sounds fun, right? Right?!
:3
What can go wrong in working an honest and clean job as a mortician to be independent and have your own income? Besides, a morgue can be a peaceful place, so quiet and tranquil. Soothingly working without any annoying distractions or bad fellow workers.
You can be alone and focus on your own work, while enjoy your utmost life, without any stress or depression that'll lead you to abusive substances.
Clean living at its best!
Playing this reminds me of two movies. The Possession Of Hanmah Grace and The Autopsy Of Jane Doe. Perhaps the devs got their inspiration from those, or probably collecting real life experience stories from some morticians and made it into a fun game full of surprises.
Or the inspirations of making this game can be from both. Who knows.
Did I say fun twice already? Or is it the third time? I lost count.
Well, one thing for sure. Fun for adults, not for kids. It will scarred them for life. So don't be mean, please?
Me likey!

Probably the best horror game I've played. Scary, interesting story, repetitive yet oddly satisfying tasks to complete amidst the haunting. Really fun.
Refunded purchase because I like my sleep. Ima be honest, the fear was very real that I couldn't sleep for 3 nights.
I want to get this game and play it again but my wife thinks that's crazy. I don't know... Am I being crazy?
10/10.
I am not a horror fan, but I thoroughly enjoyed the jump scares in this game. I didn't expect some of them and even looked forward to getting all the alternate endings. If you aren't a horror fan but are wanting to try something to give you that jolt of fright, try this one, you won't regret it. Or maybe you will, either way, it was worth it in my books.
If you like jumpscares, lore, and drugs, then this is the game for you. Overall, its a pretty good game. Maybe not for people that don't like dead people... or demons :)
TL;DR: Worth it at full price.
I find this to be an absolutely phenomenal horror game. The premise is straight forward, and I found the gameplay oddly satisfying. The embalming process is fairly repetitive, but throughout you have a puzzle to solve based on a multitude of clues and goals. The scares range from straight up jump scares to subtle, to feeling like there's something right over your shoulder and the hairs on your neck are standing up. The game gets an A+ for atmosphere and presentation. I also found the story very well done. It may be repetitive, but the journey through the seemingly monotonous job is where things tend to go off the rails. There is a demo that gives you the basics of what the game is.
GAMEPLAY:
As stated above the core gameplay is straight forward and repetitive. The goal of the game is to solve a puzzle based on surrounding clues. There is more to the game that you have to find on your own. I will say there's enough there to keep you going, and there's enough endings that fill the whole story and world up very well. The act of embalming the bodies is satisfying on its own, and once you get 2 or 3 done, you'll remember the steps to do it. Finding clues to further your goals also adds some variety to the presentation. Go in blind, and have fun!
There is a mode where you just embalm bodies as well. A nice added feature.
CONTROLS:
The game controls fine. Some of the embalming actions can feel a little janky, but it's easy enough to get used to. Otherwise your typical controls.
SOUND:
Honestly they did an amazing job with this. It always feels eerie. They set the silence and most minute sounds in all the right places that really add to the eerieness. The silence is also quiet enough that when things happen, it will make you want to look over your shoulder in real life.
GRAPHICS:
Overall the graphics are fine. Not bad by any means, but they won't blow your mind. The design of things that happen throughout the game are unsettling...at worst.
-Is that body smiling? Ohhh no it's just the angle that I'm pus......ohh.....
ATMOSPHERE/ENVIRONMENT
As stated above, they nailed atmosphere almost perfectly for what they set out to do. Working in the mortuary already feels off, the visual aesthetic of the mortuary is already off-putting without having any scares done. Once you start your shift, you will start to notice a variety of things.
-What was that by that cabinet?! Oh a shado-......ohhhh no no no no no no
There are occasional jump scares, but the way everything is placed is pretty much perfect. Eventually the events may become repetitive and you know what to expect, but I still felt the hairs on my neck standing up on end while playing the game.
STORY:
I really like how they handled the story here. You have to do some work to put everything together nicely, but when you do I feel it pays off majorly. This is one where everything is given to you once you find it. There are connections you have to make, but everything is there and very apparent once you get the information. I really like what they did, and adding the FREE definitive edition upgrade made it even better than it already was. The main character and anybody else involved in the story kept my interest the whole time.
IN CLOSING:
I think this game is very much worth your time, and very much worth it even at full price. The game may take about 5-6 hours to get everything, but I enjoyed every minute I spent in this game. I've even completed it twice now. If you're still unsure try the demo, it will give you basically what you're going to be doing, but with so much more involved. I could tell the developers definitely wanted to make something special here, and they did a fantastic job. I look forward to see what they do with this little universe they've created, and where the story goes from here.
The Mortuary Assistant has lots of quality scares, an interesting story, enjoyable gameplay, and excellent graphics and sound design. It is a horror game that I would certainly recommend to horror enthusiasts. All of that should be said, and I do have some grievances with the game. I feel like the game does not do a good enough job of telling you how to tell which body is being possessed by the demon. I feel the database in the game tells you that ultimately, a body that moves or is more active is the one with the demon in it... or maybe not because demons like to play tricks. My first few shifts had a bunch of bad endings because I was relying on the information in the game - as soon as I looked up some IRL information about which happenings are actual tells of being possessed, I started doing fine. I think the game should do a better job at telling you what to look out for, even in small, subtle ways. However, after looking up a guide, I found the game to be very enjoyable and it somehow maintained its spook factor even after seeing the same events multiple times, which is honestly pretty impressive.
