Great Game.
This game is honestly one of the best games I am having fun playing in a long time with the movement and the hit scan that the enemies have with the puzzles into each level that are integrated in it while teaching you the movements at the same time. I don't like how you are not able to parry in this game or unless I have not just yet hit that point in the story mode so far I am only able to dodge to avoid getting hit in the game from the enemies at this point in time. The visuals of this game are absolutely amazing for what it is, In my mind this is more of a single player indie game with more to it.
In my opinion I would wait for this game to go on sale to purchase it however you will not be dissapointed if you can not wait for one.
You can feel Blue Fire's potential as you're playing it, but it feels like it never saw a playtester's eyes. There are a lot of little quality of life issues that should have been caught and fixed. For a game that requires as much precision platforming as it does, the controls are very slippery. A lot of the games systems feel thrown in at random or hacked together, and the story/quest chains feel pretty messy. Worth it if it's on sale and you have 10 hours to kill.
Nice Game
Great, short and fun game. I really like how everything seemed so "fluid". The controls were really good and the platforming levels challenging, but not too hard. Would recommend.
It's the devs first game and it shows, it has some good stuff (platforming, environments) some meh stuff (combat, story) and some bad stuff (writing). There's better games to spend the same amount of money on but if it's on sale I recommend it.
The bosses are enjoyable from the third one onwards but pose little challenge in normal mode, overall the game is easy on this difficulty, I've only died once in the free DLC. Didn't bother with hard mode because it seems to only 1) increase enemy damage but I did not care for the combat 2) reduce the number of checkpoints (supposedly during platform challenges, I did not verify this but why would you ever have this as an option is beyond me, just extra frustration for the player).
Some rambling:
The spirit mechanic seems to be inspired by Hollow Knight charms, however it's not well balanced, some of them are super good while others useless, and they all have the same equipment cost. It's interesting that about half of them upgrade your movement capabilities, some of them are super broken to the point of making most platforming challenges (Voids) in the game trivial.
I've actually replayed all main story Voids without any movement spirits and found them all reasonably doable and mostly fun.
The DLC Voids however are quite hard without any spirits (believe me, I've tried) and balance wise they feel all over the place. Here I eventually gave up and easily completed them with all movement buffs activated. There's probably an optimal spirit combination one can choose for each Void to make the DLC challenging and fun instead of challenging and rage-inducing, but it's the devs job to make sure the player has just enough tools to overcome a challenge in a satisfying way, not the player's. Overall the spirits that buff your movement feel like the devs weren't confident of their own platforming difficulty, which again, first game, perfectly understandable.
Closing statement: the game has a secret Banana costume so it's a 10/10
Really good and fun game with nice story and excellent gameplay elements.
Blue Fire is difficult to describe. Its a game that ticked many boxes for what i was looking for though i barely new it at the time. In a typical Metroidvania style you upgrade your characters movement through the map and can go zoom zoom the further you play. Combat lacks finesse, but the twilight princess vibes and superbly executed jump and platforming parts buffer anything that might be lackluster about blue fire.
If you are looking for a platforming oriented metroidvania with zelda vibes - we got temples, bosses, chests with upgrades, vendors, we got sockatable boons, discoverable weapons, Robes that act as skins and even quests requierements and even some neat NPC dialogues (dont expect much story or depth here!) - go for it.
As i played it over the course of ~10 days with not much time at my hands i had the need to look some stuff up because i forgot where the routes were that i couldnt access with my current abilitys. The game has no hint system what so ever, which is refreshing in the current hand-holding tutorialesq gaming environment.
You will experience backtracking but its zoomy, you are fast and fly through the map where in the beginning everything was seemingly a slog you did not know about. The overworld is distinguished enough that you will remember most rooms and areas you have been in before.
You will 100% be entertained for the 7-9 hours you will get out of this!
A really unique platformer adventure game. Zelda vibes, but is definitely its own thing with a beautifully simple art style and controls.
light racism, a bit short 8/10
I Loved this game. When i first got it i wasn't expecting much but after playing it, i couldn't stop playing it and progressing through the story. totally recommend!
The first half of the game is good... the second half, not so much - felt rushed and empty. The DLC though, that was REALLY fun, even if it was short,
dont know how its deck verified.
Blue Fire is fun with a a pretty good level of challenge and I'm glad I played it. The stylised graphics are nice to look at, the music is pleasant and helps build a nice atmosphere, and while the story is simple, the NPCs are very charming and fun to interact with.
That said, I had heard going in that it was a Metroidvania with Zelda-like dungeons, and I think that that's a little bit misleading. There are only 3 dungeons, two of which are very simple and don't test your spatial awareness all too much. As for the Metroidvania aspect, you stop getting major progression upgrades about halfway through the game, and if you think of Metroidvania maps as a type of puzzle, then the game doesn't have a lot of "noise" in the puzzle design sense - there's almost always only one way to go; even when the game splits off into three objectives about halfway through, there's pretty much nothing blocking any of them for very long that would force you to explore and find new abilities. I won't begrudge the game for its short length since this *is* an indie game, but I do think there could've been a bit more done to make the map a bit more complex in that way, which would've helped. Essentially, almost every side path at any given point either dead-ends immediately or leads to something completely optional. That said, this structure is not inherently bad, it just wasn't what I was expecting, so if you go into it without those expectations then it's fine, I just think the tag may set some people up for a bit of disappointment in that regard.
Combat is fairly simple but wailing on enemies feels fun enough and there's some depth with the ability to shield, parry, and shoot an instant fireball which gives you options. The first couple of bosses were pretty underwhelming but the later-game bosses are all multi-phase endeavours that require you to make use of your full platforming capabilities to dodge their attacks. They're very fun and pretty intense. Unfortunately the DLC boss was held back a bit by a lot of little gripes that added up and made it more frustrating than fun for me personally.
I don't have much to say about the platforming challenges that hasn't already been said elsewhere, but I like them. They were mostly fun and fair, though sometimes the depth perception can be a little wonky (especially when trying to hit the blue diamonds) and I've had the game eat my double jump quite a few times, especially against the DLC boss. I haven't tried the no-checkpoint difficulty because I feel like I wouldn't enjoy it, but as far as I'm aware it is an option if you're very good at platforming and want a greater challenge.
This game is an extremely strong first showing from this studio and I can't believe I hadn't heard of it until recently. I look forward to seeing more from them, especially if they do more games similar to Blue Fire.
Visually, a nice cute game. Mechanically it's rage inducing. The controls, especially camera can only be described as sub-optimal, like you can't have 100% control of your character's movements at any moment . Also the game is terrible at depth perception, you just can't tell how far anything is and whether you can make a jump for it or not. You can feel that especially in the challenges where the platforming is gradually getting ridiculous. I'm gonna finish the game still, but so far the experience is miserable.
This review is based on 100% completion and 8.9 hours of gameplay.
Recommendation:
Would I recommend this game? Yes, this is a nice little game, and I really like its aesthetic. It has a cute vibe, but there’s also a level of grittiness that really helps build that atmosphere. Everything in the game works well together, from the sound design and music to the art style, which is really nice. While it’s a platformer with some bits that can be a bit challenging, overall, the game is very forgiving and quite easy.
At the beginning of the game, the first few hours can feel a bit slow and confusing, but once you get more comfortable with the controls and have gained a few upgrades, the pace picks up depending on your playstyle. As for the gameplay, the main aspect is platforming, and to be honest, apart from a few of the void challenges, most of it was quite easy. The tricky bits were mostly about getting used to the mechanics. For instance, with the dash, it was just about understanding the distance it can cover, and the camera can sometimes be a bit annoying during platforming, making you do something you didn’t intend to.
The game doesn’t do much hand-holding, so you may get a little lost at times, and in this aspect, it reminded me of how Dark Souls progresses. However, there aren’t many areas, and they are fairly linear and easy to learn, which actually works in favour of the game’s vibe. While there is combat, there honestly isn’t a lot of it. Enemies are either in small groups or pretty much alone, so combat is super easy. The boss fights are similar—nothing too difficult and very easy to understand. The only mechanic I didn’t fully grasp was the final boss fight, where it shoots out a big ball shield over the arena in phase one, but it was still easy enough to beat without fully understanding it, which should give you an idea of the game’s difficulty level.
Overall, this is a nice little game that provides a mostly easy platforming experience with a few small challenges here and there. I would recommend waiting for a good sale, as I feel the base price is on the upper end of being considered reasonable for the content you get.
Achievements:
All the achievements in this game are really easy, and you’ll get them all by simply playing through the game and completing all the quests—both the main and side quests. I had no issues unlocking any achievements.
It might help to check a guide if you have trouble locating something needed for a quest, as you might get lost occasionally. But for the most part, you won’t need one, as you’ll naturally find everything you need while exploring and playing the game.
Beating the **** out of Wolfgang was very funny, yes, yes.
But tbh the game feels very unfinished, Textures are low even on high settings which makes the graphics go from straight paper to "we put a Paintdotnet "effect" over it".
The controls are very cheap and the enemies feel like Hack n Slay without the HnS, just spam X and you'll be fine.
Story? Who cares, idk (its garbage).
World doesnt feel finished, more like just putting some random polygons somewhere and lets hope its a map.
The Game is good but it definitly isnt great, cant recommend, even though it kinda keeps you playing.
Would rate it like a 5/10 at the moment as its kind of fun but (again) feels like a Alpha or Beta of a game.
P.S.: The Music is great. Especially when attacking Wolfgang :)
Amazing Puzzle Platformer with solid progression, good enemy/zone variety, and lots to collect. Controls feel smooth and responsive on controller. Free DLC adds more challenging platforming levels. Combat varies, but isn't the focus save for boss fights, which test platforming skills as much as battle prowess. Overall a great game I'd gladly spend another 20+ hours with.
Very good and fun game, has nice lore, simple combat, good movement.
my only complaint is the f**king timed parkour sections, if i see another one of those i will commit a murder
In all honesty, It's just kinda fine.
It basically combines the gameplay and vibe of the late 90's and early-mid 2000's Zelda games with the some of the souls mechanics when it comes to enviroments, collecting of "souls", use of bonfires (in this game "shrines") for healing and upgrading yourself, etc.
All of this sounds like a really innovative and interesting combination of genres in theory, but the execution falls short of being anything spectacular in my opinion as it fails to really do anything interesting that other games in these genre's aren't doing to make this game really stand out in any particular way, It's just kinda of a basic mashup that fails at being a really good platformer nor a really good souls-like either.
With all of that being said, I don't think it's a bad game by any means, but it's not great either. It's just kind of okay in a way that keeps you playing but will have you probably forget about it once you're finished.
May be worth a pick up on sale if you really like platformers
The game is fun, it has some Zelda vibes, the collectibles, the weapons and the clothes are various and very cool, and the exploration and its variety of parkour you have to do in order to explore all above all its top tier, even if some mechanics are kinda off, but it's just a bother for some voids. That said the combat feels cool BUT very much off in almost all the situations, it is very random whenever the hitbox will be at your side or at enemy side for whatever ypu are doing, so I can't even consider to replay in hard mode. I think I will still manage greatly since it's not so difficult for a completist anyway, but I'm content with stylistically good fight and top tier parkour. Obviously worth the price for me.
very good game, im surmprised ive never seen anyone play it or ever heard of it. its defineatly much cheaper than it should be id be guessing aroun 20-40 dallars but its only 4 dollars till the end on october. in general its very fun to play.
Pretty good overall. the movement and exploration/voids is what made it enjoyable for me. The combat was...not quite polished. Bosses were awful and just downright annoying. Short but mostly enjoyable experience. 6/10
Great little gem of a game. Essentially what happens if you took a 3D Mario game and fusion-danced it with Hollow Knight. The platforming can be a little frustrating at times, but it's usually a matter of timing/rhythm, and the controls are nice and snappy, so once you 'get it' platforming puzzles are solved in a satisfying, almost speedrun-eqsue fashion.
Then there's the charm, humor, clean art style, and even the soundtrack has a cozy, yet still dark feel to it. Highly recommended.
This game is very similar to ww zelda in aesthetics and game design but as soon as you start playing it you can tell it's very unique. Imagine WW with HK's mothwing cloak and and jump, with a little more zoomed out camera. The platforming feels VERY good and asks a decent amount of you. Got for 3.99$ and played with a controller, well worth the price for the first 20 mins alone. If you can pick this up on as good a sale as I did I highly recommend it.
I bought this game on sale, and it turned out to be annoyingly addictive! I haven't gotten that far in the game (I don't think) because I keep dying, but so far it has been pretty entertaining. A good change of pace kinda game. (for me anyway)
:) my review
(excuse my formatting lol still learning)

The Good (10 reasons)
- Gameplay feels fluent.
- The camera is sooo good!
- Performance is super great.
- The graphics are mid tier good.
- Story is not that bad.
- Music is super great.
- Weapons are super cool.
- Many screen resolutions supported.
- UI feels good and fast and not cluttered.
- Stick drift doesn't effect the game much.

The Good (Explained)
- Gameplay
It just felt so good, like everything matched. It felt like alot of time and effort was carefully placed into this game with the budget the dev had to work with. The overall theme is unique and feels like it was inspired by Hollow Knight. U will find yourself jumping platforms alot, climbing, timing your jumps, and just attacking enemies and collecting orbs.

- Camera
It was good, didn't feel like i was fighting the thing the whole time trying to see enemies, locations, corners etc felt smooth and on point how a camera should feel.

- Performance
I ran it at 1080p np with a stable 60fps the whole time, not a single fps drop anywhere. The game supported other framerates too like 120 etc. During fight scenes the game didn't stutter or lag as well. I also liked that it had widescreen option which makes switching back n forth from discord chat to the game much easier. Spec wise it doesn't take a whole lot to run this game so u will prob be able to run it np.

- Graphics
They are cartoonish, but they are not bad or super great as well, it looks alot like something from a low budget UNITY Engine type of game. Which u can tell in-game the dev did whatever he could to work with what he had to make cool chars and graphics. But hey, graphics aren't always everything right? this game makes up for it in other areas.

- Story
I haven't beat the game yet or got far enough to really give a full complete detail of it, but it's cute, seem's somewhat interesting, the story doesn't feel too bland or rushed. U prob will enjoy it for a lower price game and knowing what to expect from the price tag. The story isn't crap tho if u was curious. U will get some hours into it for sure. I really like how u first start out tho as a experiment in a test lab and being the chosen 1.

- Music
Lol where do i even begin? it's great!!! like really good! something i expected from like hollow knight. Even upon entering the game title screen u are blasted away by great music. U will totally feel at peace leaving the game running in your living room or office where u won't have to worry about people complaining about a awful music playing over n over like those old dvd players did back in the day.

- Weapons
Lord! u get some cool weapons fr, they all look cartoonish but so cool, and the attacks with them are cool from the effects. What i like is they didn't feel clunky or poorly made as well.

[*]UI
The UI felt great, fluent, fast, and just overall easy to navigate and didn't feel overly complicated or cluttered. Many games clutter the crap out of the UI. U as well get hearts as health on your screen as part of the ui like zelda has.

Extra notes
It's not a bad game, really! it's just smaller compared to other story platformer games. But as i said before, it's totally worth sale price anyday! even the outfits are super cool which made the game good imo cuz i a big outfit person for my hero. It does strike off as a mobile game vibe or feel or that it could be 1 someday, but it's great for a rainy couch night with pizza or u bored and want some simple game to play that isn't too in your face difficult, or requires sweat and tears to beat. I like to say it's inbetween. Anyway it's totally a game that will pack a punch and give u hours of fun for your $.
Blue Fire is honestly one of my favorite games of all time (enough that I've played through it all 3 times twice on PC and once on switch). The levels and voids are fun to move around in, all the boss fights are fun to do. The music is fantastic and is always a bop to listen to. Highly recommend to anyone who is thinking about getting it.
P.S.- Just double jump
This game is the wet dream of every kid who grew up with the N64. Amazing platforming with Zelda style dungeons and upgrades. If that sounds fun you'll like this game.
TLDR: If you like the idea of a hack-and-slash 3D platformer zelda-like, buy this game, on sale or not. It's good fun. Use a controller.
This game is great. I 100%'d it twice pre-DLC, did it again for the DLC, and I'm still considering reinstalling it for another round. Buy it, full price or on sale. The movement is hugely customizable if you get the optional upgrades and satisfying even with just the stuff you get on the main path. You'll be able to do some really wacky movement options and skips when you're at HALF the maximum potential.
Besides the fact that there are so many movement options to help you dodge and position, don't expect the world from the combat - it's perfectly fine and serviceable, but it's not where the game shines. If that's all you're here for, still at least look at some gameplay and see if it interests you. If you're here for the platforming or collecting, or you're open to giving that a shot, buy the game. I'm about to buy a copy for a friend.
...Still not buying it? ...You can find a banana costume and play as a silly little banana guy. Did that convince you?
For what it is , it's a fun game.
Not thesame budget as AAA games. but atleast as fun imo.
Give this game a honest try while not expecting too much and have fun.
Games like this are lacking in the gaming world right now imo.
I really wish there would be a follow up to this game.
A very good indie game in my opinion.
I liked the story, the world, the dungeons, and the eastereggs too, latter being very important to me in games in general.
Besides all of that, simply playing the game is really fun too, since the movements and just making your way through jump n runs really is very fun with these mechanics.
Give the game some time to hook you and you wont be able to resist!
Proper love letter game to Windwaker and older 3d platformers.
I really wanted to like this, but it feels unfinished. First off, what I liked:
+ The movement is generally quite fun and you get to perform some impressive maneuvers near the end.
+ The Void sections, which are focused platforming rooms disconnected from the general game world, are really great
+ The game is not afraid of asking the player to use the whole moveset in challenging ways
+ The artstyle is pretty good and the game seems impressively well-optimised
Now for the unfortunate properties:
- The world design is lacking, which is a critical point in an action-adventure game. The game has a strikingly unique setting on paper with the whole game taking place inside a giant floating castle. But you only get to even see the outside world and part of the exterior in like two small rooms. The places inside the castle feel disjointed and not very evocative of the larger setting (volcanic caves?), which is a huge dissapointment and missed opportunity. Seeing how cool the castle design is in the menu screen made me want to go there. The individual areas also don't have a very good sense of place, which isn't helped by the game not having a map at all, making the world layout difficult to imagine as a whole. Furthermore, they're more or less laid out in a straight line with two large interconnecting rooms that don't feel very organic.
- There are parts in the game world where the platforming gets frustrating and punishing (the graveyard tower is a good example), which could easily have been mitigated if the overworld made use of the shortcut system that is already implemented very well in the voids. Often, it is not very clear where you will respawn after falling, and sometimes it is right next to an ememy that will repeatedly blast you over the edge again.
- The story seems as promising as the setting at first. You are seemingly an experiment made of equal goodness and corruption to be able to withstand the evil, and you see many earlier attempts at making you disposed in huge piles, bluntly explained as "corpses". Then the game never elaborates at all. You also get the story of a god betraying their pantheon seemingly as a setup for the main villain, thus leading to the corruption, but that is also just forgotten. There is barely any cutscenes or narration after the (pretty terrible) final boss. You just see it die, there is a vague explosion and the credits roll.
- There are points where the game world does not seem fit for the movement at all. Some platforms were more tiny than the movement feels precise enough to deal with. And while wall running is fun, the same mechanic is used for Mario 64-style vertical wall jumping without distinction, which doesn't work at all.
- The music gets kind of annoying and forgetable, as is the npc's going for a kind of Zelda-quirky that it does not nail at all, but that's a matter of taste.
There is a great game in here, the parts where I had fun were excellent after all. But sadly, for me the sum ended up being less than the parts. I hope the developers learn from their experiences, because I am very sold on a great adventure-platforming game in a unique setting with this kind of movement.
Fun game, cool art, great platforming, good combat. I recommend it.
It didn't hook me
Really cool game! It's a hybrid Zelda + Souls-like + 3D Platformer. I recommend it if you like any of the three genre.
great metroidvania. would have been even better if there was an option to use a map. some mechanics are not explained very well.
A platformer with mid controls is a terrible game. This is a terrible game.
the fire was only a little blue...
Rough, bland combat and full of monotonous platforming. What made me quit is the navigation, and stuck on the mechanism not visible in plain sight.
Blue Fire is an interesting start. That is the first thing that comes to mind when I think about how I feel about this game. My overall feeling with it once I finished it was contentment, with a feeling of slightly missed opportunity that was filled in by how solid other aspects of the game are.
Graphics are simple, soundtrack is good, yadda yadda yadda. You already know the deal.
What stands out here is the gameplay. Metroidvania platformers are extremely fun. This is one of those and therefore is extremely fun. Using a limited moveset to get around the map, only to use your expanded moveset later to breeze through it is a defining moment of this game.
Combat is alright. Parrying, Arial bounces, dodge. It is all here. The thing is though, you are platforming through the combat it creates this satisfying dodge and weave play style that is very nimble and unique. It is extraordinarily easy though. I played on hard, and the combat was pitiful in most cases. That is not what you are here for though, you are here for the platforming.
The platforming in this game is so good that it holds everything else in the game up. While the other aspects may be ok or lacking, the platforming is a proper challenge that will test your patience and willpower. By no means of the word is it undoable or the hardest, but it is a fun challenge. Especially with the DLC this game has.
My major complaint with the game is the badge system. It is kinda just tacked on. Sometimes they're borderline useless (Damaging dodge anyone?). Other times they are game breakingly good. The double double jump and double dash in specific. Those trivialize some of the void challenges. They do give way to some fun skips, but they feel like a last second addition that doesn't mesh with the rest of the game most of the time.
Voids are the peak of this game. Most if not all are extremely fun bite sized platforming challenges. I love these so much, and they felt so rewarding to playthrough. They made a whole DLC dedicated to challenging voids, and it is 100% the most fun you will have with the game. Sadly, there are no achievements or even a sign that it is there, so I almost missed it. Just make sure you play it. It is extremely fun.
Blue Fire is overall a great game. While some aspects are lacking, none are bad, and the platforming more than makes up for any short comings. 8.5/10
feels unpolished
janky movement
lack of world build in some parts
weak combat system
I recommend this game if you are a fan of Zelda or Hollow Knight, might be a bit easy but its a vibe for sure.
the graveyard tower made me ragequit
I only recommend this if you really like exploration, and even then, some of the level design is very questionable.
The inspirations are a little too heavy, with some things being just downright stolen like the quests menu. The fights and voids are too easy and kind of boring. The world feels really shallow and boring, the plot is worse than a pokemon game, and the music is just kind of there.
I really agree with the guy who compared this to gas station nachos.
This is a great game, it's really solid, a lot of really good mechanics and super fun gameplay, there are definitely areas it could improve with level design and pacing, but not nearly enough to make this game not worth it, takes around 10 hours to beat, super enjoyable the whole time.
Another great Zelda-like game with more of a focus on platforming.
Combat is a bit too easy, especially with the mountain of health and healing items you get, but its still fun.
The platforming and movement is really nice, especially once you get more upgrades. The greatest enemy you will battle though, will be the camera!
Blue Fire
Good game with good mechanics, but the story and the world feel a little smashed together. The game emphasizes freedom of movement in the environment layouts over having a sort of hand-holding linearity. This is not a bad thing, but eazy fights and simple "puzzles" make navigating the majority of gameplay. While the environments were nice to look at, navigating those places didn't feel interesting enough to make me think or feel anything other than wanting to make progress toward the next destination. The story was mildly interesting, but mostly a sidenote to the gameplay. Was a fun experience, but I'm not sure if I would actively recommend it to people over more popular games,
