I almost went crazy. In terms of the story, I think it's pretty good for the story. The unique battle aspect that can swap Characters with various characters obtained on the way to the game, So this can also be luck if we get a Unique or Legendary type Character. What I like most about this game is the Story, for some reason I rarely see a game type where the skull is the main character here. For the fight, it's quite difficult, We just have to grind more, and avoid some Attacks (Because this game system is in the form of health, so I often use the Skull Shield as my favorite character)
Maybe not for you if failure frustrates you too much, but I have to say it's almost addictive playing this game. Fast paced, enjoyable, creative, and failure really does feel like an honest mistake rather than dumb luck.
Would give the game a neutral rating if I could.
As a one off videogame its fun for a bit. As a roguelike I think it fails.Simply put, half the skulls present suck. They are not only weak but feel bad to play. Visual clutter is a massive problem. Dying because you cannot see anything but bullet hell spam, and massive explosions, sucks. Good luck beating the game with anything but an OP skull or a tank build.
Don't expect much build variety, despite the marketing. As mentioned previously, most skulls suck. This is only further compounded by the heavy RNG of the game. Having a good skull is not enough. You also need good items. Sometimes run is ruined because you have good items but bad skulls or vice versa. Oh and try not to get hard countered by hero boss battle RNG. Going up against the wrong ones at the wrong time can instantly ruin a run.
The base game feels too easy once you get most of the permanent character upgrades. The Dark mirror portion of the campaign is absurdly hard. Having beaten it in its entirety I think its a shame that many of the QOL features and enemy variety are locked to this mode. I don't understand why the mirror tiers are so horribly balanced either. 1-3 are acceptable in pacing. 4-6 are basically hell. If you complete 6 though, 7-10 is a cakewalk comparatively. It just leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
There is a decent story told in bits and pieces through the game. Nothing groundbreaking, but better than expected.
All in all, I don't think its a bad game, but there are better games out there. Why put dozens or hundreds of hours into this game instead of deadcells? Couldn't tell you. Why not the Binding of Isaac or tomb of the necrodancer, or any litany of better roguelikes? If you are a sucker for the genre with time to kill its alright. For a casual that can't afford to waste dozens of hours on mediocre games, its a hard pass.
I finished the game and I can say, ABSOLUTELY LOVED it
100/10
Fantastic job to the korean devs and the beautiful VA as well as the artists who made the Witch, if only Arachne had one as well....
Can't wait for a DLC or Skul 2 but most of all another game from them. Absolutely Amazing
Really good game, nice story, great gameplay. Definitely much more difficult than other roguelikes but just screw around with the skulls and you will eventually beat it. So many build choices and variety. Diverse playstyles. Very fun.
fun mechanics and good good story
just beat it (well the main game at least) and omg one of my favorite rogue likes that is definitely worth the price :)
I cannot stress how good this game is. Easily one of my top 5 favorite roguelikes. When you really develop mastery over how each skull works, the game really opens up. And the 2 optional bosses are honestly peak. My only complaint is that there are only 4 biomes (technically 5 but the enemies of the last biome might as well not even exist).
The most satisfying roguelike game I have ever played.
The movement is fluid and responsive. Everything flows so nicely, and moving with the different abilities that the skulls give you makes it so much fun to dash through levels and see how you can maneuver through the different enemies attacks.
The variety is incredible. There's dozens of different skulls you can pick up and play as, each with their own unique gimmicks and abilities that makes all of them feel so different from each other and it makes you want to use them all to see what they are like.
The difficulty is a good balance. it's difficult to the point where beating it on your first try is nearly impossible, yet the more you play, the more you learn the bosses patterns and how the basic enemies function, and you will notice that you gradually start making it farther and farther into your runs each time and it feels so nice knowing that you're improving.
It's the most satisfying roguelike I have ever played. The pixel art is so detailed, stopping to look at the art really makes you appreciate the level of detail that they put into it all, which then carries over into the rest of the game, as it is all so perfectly balanced. Could not recommend more to anyone who likes this genre.
This game really defined, "Give me the best roguelike game!" This game is very intense, amazing, and pure golden. The Game is also very challenging and also very hard since it has permadeath (i still like it) I recommend this game for players who wish to learn about this game. Theres a lot of enemies, bosses, characters, and weapons. Try it out!
Amazing sidescrolling roguelike, the skulls really transform the gameplay and make each run interesting. Visual clarity is an issue but it's still so worth it.
Saw this game because of a guy I watch, he had a miserable but fine time. In my opinion while this game is hard, at this time I still haven't even beaten it, it is really fun and honestly I feel like maybe it is a bit of a good starter for people who want to get into roguelikes, it doesn't take you long to adjust to the controls. My only gripe is how hard early game is since getting enough dark quartz to upgrade yourself to competently handle the first major boss is a hassle, though that might also be because I didn't know how to do the dash mechanic properly-
Would recommend to people who love hack and slash rogue-likes centered around a unique mechanic or down bad losers who like spider girls and hot witches (I fit in to both of these categories but I know a lot of people only fit into one.) Overall a good satisfying experience.
Skul just feels bad to play. It does not feel snappy at all - your hitbox feels strange, visual clarity is poor, room design can be weird, and you have to commit to all your stubby little skeleton attacks.
Builds are item, skill, and skull dependent, plus half of the skulls just feel miserable to use.
There's so many other good action roguelikes out there (both Hades, Astral Ascent, etc), you don't have to slog through this one.
This game is very fun and enjoyable. I have put 86 hours into the game and none of it was disappointing. I liked getting all the skulls and maxing them out along with trying to find a good build. Overall the game is very fun.
I love this game, if you were brought here because of the visuals or the idea of cool skeletons, that's what this game is about. The use of different skulls that you can trade out is an awesome concept, and each design is really sweet, part of the fun is just seeing everything you can unlock. If you like beat 'em ups, and the style is interesting to you, this is a must buy.
I purchased this game and got bored quite quickly. If I compare this to the greatness that is Dead Cells or games in that league, this game feels very average unfortunately. Not a bad game, just not a great game either.
A funny little game about being a skeleton, I won't spoil much, but basically you take skulls from other fallen warriors & use them as your own to use their powers, then upgrade them to use their maximum power along with items to buff stats or cause new effects. All to save a demon king. 10/10 difficult & rewarding, along with more replay ability
I bought this with dead cells and hades on sale. This one was better than dead cells but not as good as hades. I played it a while, but found the progression slow and the upgrades not very helpful (although they do add up), they take a long time to get. The base skulls are decent but didn't feel like they were all that varied, and some feel borderline useless while some feel like they make you too good. I like some randomness, but then the items are all very jumbled feeling and the way they have the attributes on the items that you have to stack, like a set bonus makes character building very complex and often you don't get what you want and can end up with a "bad" build. If that doesn't make sense, it just feels too random. Feels more like you are waiting for the game to give you random goodness, more than you are trying to get better at the game. I had fun with it and thought it was worth the money, on sale.
This game boils down to resetting the run until you get a rare skull, and trying to guess when to dodge because the screen is filled with enemies
damn bro its very fun and the story is very cool, I've been waiting to get this game since I was 16, and I just bought it 3 weeks ago (now I was 19), what a masterpiece
The movement just feels wrong, the difficulty scaling sucks
Coming from one of the best skul the hero slayers in the world i highly recommend this game to anyone and everyone who enjoys lightly complicated fast paste rougelites this game is full of adventure, new skuls, and new content as you make your way through the game and i have racked up over 500 hours on this game and im still getting shocked by the stuff in encounter while making my way through carleon for the 300th time
On one hand it's a really good game. But the elephant in the room is the balance.
Maybe it's just a "me" thing, but I really like it in rogue likes when after managing to workout a good functional build, you start destroying the game for a while. I just don't feel it in that game, so I think it's a bit too difficult.
Well, still worth playing, it just made me play 150 hours instead of 300 trying all sorts of builds.
I might be skill gaped here
The game is very good but the combat is a bit slow. If you like fast paced games you should think about this twice.
the art, sounds, abilities and entire skull-swapping system is peak.
fun but i some of descriptions are long and idc im not reading that shit
It's decent. I really recommend rookie mode. It halves enemy damage. I love platformers, and roguelikes, and this game's too hard with too little variation to put in the 20-50 hours you'd need for your first clear. Plus, the progression takes AGES if you're routinely dying in the second area.
The game is great, my most played game this year, I had a ton of fun.
However the controls do not work well on Linux, and illegitimate version works better. And the UI breaks often on my PC for both.
a great roguelike with an interesting core mechanic of switching skulls to switch your abilities. if your a fan of roguelikes this is one of my favorites.
Tibia honest, it's hard to find a bone to pick with this game.
The characters are hip, the writing is humerus, and the NPC's are unique and interesting - despite being a skeleton crew.
Gameplay is definitely not bare-bones, surprisingly well fleshed out, despite a distinct lack of flesh. Some of the enemies are bone heads, though none got under my skin particularly.
Pixel art is beautiful, combat feels really good a lot of the time, it's not an easy rougelite, but it's fun as hell in my opinion.
They don't really teach you anything, and it can feel like a drag getting back to your last death, but that's the fun of the genre I guess. This was more fun than Hades for me and it's been fun to optimize stuff, underrated AF
bones
Fantastic rogue-lite. Good amount of build variety and content, given the low price. Definitely worth it.
This game is insanely addictive! Easy to play, quick to get the hang of its mechanics, and so much paths to take with different skulls to evolve. The boss battles are also challenging and very unique. I am hoping that they make a sequel.
i ABSOULUTELY love this game, amazing designing, good gameplay, if you're done with your first few playthroughs i recommend playing with mods, thank you for this great game <3
This is a challenging 2D side-scrolling brawler in the vein of Dead Cells. No two runs are the same, so you won't be stuck on the first boss you encounter every time you reach that point. There are a variety of stats to manipulate and builds to discover. Each "skull" is unique, which will also make each adventure a new one.
Tried extremely hard to like this game but its just not worth it my biggest regret is that I played so much I can't refund it. To call this a rouge like would be disappointing to the genre this game is difficult and not in a fun way. What I mean by that is instead of learning from your deaths most of them feel cheap. Like it was completely unavoidable I am by no means bad at difficult games growing up on souls like entries such as blood borne each death I knew exactly what I did wrong and how to fix it. This game on the other hand almost every death feels like the game decided I should die instead of me just playing bad. The skill tree which you unlock doesn't even feel rewarding instead feeling like these upgrades should instead be given to you at the start making you feel EVEN MORE under powered than at the start of other rouge likes such as Hades. In Hades I was able to beat the entire game with no problem with only one extra life and Hades allows up to 3. At almost 10 hours in this game I am only just now starting to feel like my character isn't under powered anymore. The other problem I have with this game is definitely the skull mechanic. It can be probably my favorite mechanic in any souls like, but other times it just feels like it was implanted wrong. Bones are way too scarce to get and the difference in rarity between skulls is absolutely beyond what it should be If I can beat a 32 testament Hades 2 run with little only common blessings but struggle to even fight the first boss with a common skull how is that balanced? You will spend run after run just praying you get a legendary and when you get one amazing! The game feels playable now! But that short dopamine rush quickly leaves just as fast because if you even get decently far with that legendary this game is a ROUGE LIKE, by the time you enjoy that your already on your next run which is just so disappointing. I tried to like this game and at times loves it but due to the severe imbalance in it I cannot recommend it.
Areas don't change much / at all on subsequent runs, giving each run an incredibly samey feel.
Skulls themselves aren't particularly dynamic or interesting to use.
Itemisation looks good at first but is ultimately a pretty boring case of 'chase the highest number'.
The player is given too few choices to make leading to a feeling of playing on autopilot for most of a run.
Game relies too heavily on DPS checks making the player feel stupid for investing in anything that isn't more DPS.
I'm not a roguelite enjoyer in general so consider this review biased, but I didn't enjoy my 10 hours. There are better roguelites to play out there.
To be honest, I would not recommend this game to my friends. This is because Skul: The Hero Slayer is not user-friendly for players who just want to enjoy battles with the enemies and boss fights. This game is quite difficult to play in both normal version and black mirror version, even though I have achieved all the achievements in black mirror version. I hope the game can improve if the developers want to have a next episode . (6/10)
i suck at the game so i say its bad. its just a skill issue but i want to make it clear that i am a hater of this game. dont get it. save yourself. it wasnt even on discount or anything. only betas play this game and real alphas play fortnite.
A sub-par rogue-like hack-n-slash with artificial difficulty and broken mechanics.
The gimmick here is you can switch between two different character classes on the fly (well, not quite; there's a cool-down that can be modified through perks during runs) to give the player some sort of agency in their desired play style.
Trouble is, only one or two of these classes is remotely viable, and only then if you manage to roll a *very* specific set of skills and buffs through stores and chests, and even then it's a crap shoot because basic enemies give you the barest telegraph of their intent and the bosses are a nightmare of random damage and seemingly unavoidable attacks that will only appeal to autistic obsessives or anti-social perfectionists.
(The DLC adds a leg up as far as viability of choice in builds but this is a review of the base game, not the band-aid.)
My experience with this game felt like beating my head against a wall until one specific session when I landed a broken build that essentially let me dash back and forth across each screen without touching the ground while casting auto-aimed attacks. I probably made it a good halfway through the available content with that joke of a grind and gave myself carpel tunnel in the process. What ended my run? You guessed it: Another BS boss that showered the screen in death-rays. I was dead before I could memorize any kind of attack pattern, and since I was never going to make it that far again anyway, there was no point in continuing.
Look, I don't want to be too hard on this game: going off the cumulative positive Steam user ratings and browsing some of the other reviews on here there's a good chance I just suck. Much pleasure can be had in charging through a bunch of enemies at once as numbers fly from their bodies. The art design is charming and inspired, as is the premise (conquered monsters versus arrogant humans) and I got a good 17 hours out of it before I decided I was being trolled. Maybe you will have a better time than I did. Or maybe you'd best skip it and play something without such an unforgiving learning curve.
It seems ok at first, but the game doesn't really explain anything. What are the different door types, are bone upgrades saved? How do I upgrade with bones? What upgrades matter? All sorts of things.
What really made me quit was how you can get small upgrades to damage and such per a roguelite game, but nothing to increase your toughness. The maps are full of cheesy traps and such to make damage add up, but there is no way to increase your defense. So you will always be as vulnerable every run forever.
I really like the diversity you get in between Skulls, keeps the gameplay somewhat fresh
Well, in general this game is well made. I don't recommend it, because I didn't like it. I managed to beat the first level in 3 hours and I thought: oh, the second level - finally something new! But when you die you need to start from the first level all over again... And it's frustrating. You're just playing the same location with mostly same gear, nothing new in the story, just waiting when you level up enough to beat through the another level. I felt boring and wasting time, because in the game I value the story most of all. So it's matter of taste.
Fun and addictive! What else can I say?
You like this genre? You'll like this game!
Great roguelite that can be a bit tough to get started but very fun and rewarding to play when you understand the different mechanics and how they interact.
This is an amazing game. I have played since it has come out and played during the black mirror beta. I enjoy this a lot and believe if someone likes roguelites, they will almost certainly enjoy this game!
insainly fun rouge like it starts off easy and gets really hard fast
The game is bugged out in the firs two minutes rendering it unplayable.
Shortly after meeting the witch and going through to the next zone, you're to pick up a helm from a dying NPC which then puts the game into an idle cinematic loop waiting for the helm to spawn.... it never spawns.
I've reset multiple times and tried on 2 other PCs and have the same issue repeating.
Trying to look online for any advice I see there are multiple points in the game where game locking bugs have been reported and still not resolved.
As good as this game is, I cannot play it despite my efforts.
with almost 88 hrs of gameplay I can say that this game is great and among the good ones forsure but the developers need to go back and fix this bone upgrade per skull u destroy honestly I HATE THAT I have to fight 50 enemies just for 5 bones bro or to receive damage over and over and get screwed towards levels 3 and 4 some of these enemies are ridiculously tanking leaving me almost tired of button mashing just to take down the weakest of opponents to semi difficult enemies. the builds amongst the skulls are seriously unbalanced leaving speed skulls to be dead last in choice bc of their low damage and no real combos without the timer for the skill completely screwing you over and power skulls take so much health for so little reward some of the latter issues just don't help very much with only having 2 skulls at a time and only being able to use 1 other besides the main skull. all in all i still play this game lots and i barely managed to get to the last boss before the stupid ads pour out of every damn corner I don't know what to do at this point I love skul and I hate to leave a review so negative and somewhat positive but man I need the skulls balanced.
