Hindsight is a slow, thoughtful exploration of a life in reflection, triggered by the death of a loved one. Visiting a childhood home to pack up belongings, the game places you into a non-linear narrative where you experience first-hand sequences and standalone moments that represent memories of a place, of a time, of people. The game is wonderfully narrated, a single-sided dialogue from the protagonist to the deceased, a poignant reflection on an imperfect and very human childhood and adolescence.
The use of visual ‘snapshots’, small scenes to explore and consider as the dialogue threads everything together, creates a strong empathy with the protagonist. There is a genuine feeling of moving through memories, sometimes sense memories triggered by a sound, sight or smell, other times a recollection of a specific moment or conversation. These are all collected into a linear story that uses a non-linear timeline to flesh out the protagonist and her relationship with her parents.
The game does not have any particular big twists, but it is full of very human experiences that feel real and grounded, moments that are relatable and affecting.
The art of the game has a visual flare, often feeling poetic with the monologue as they work together to represent events and emotional experiences. Minimal, but very effective and clear.
A short but poetic experience that will tug at your heartstrings and possibly trigger a little self-reflection of your own.
Look, it's not awful....this is really a thumbs-sideways review.
I just ultimately didn't find many aspects of the game enthralling enough to consider giving it a recommendation.......
The positives are the general story-line (minus the sometimes clunky, sometimes trite/banal writing) and the graphics/atmosphere of the game.
The negatives are that the gameplay is virtually non-existent (you use your mouse to move your view of the scene enough to reveal a hot-spot to click on, and it's almost never intricate or occult enough to require any effort at all, basically the mouse version of "move right to win" that people complain about with challenge-less walking simulators), and the details of the story are rather maudlin and the entire plot, while more-or-less emotionally engaging (to a point), could be summed up with "COMMUNICATE MORE WITH LOVED ONES", which is not exactly a ground-breaking premise and the execution of which might have you mentally yelling at the screen, "Well rather than feeling overwhelmingly sad/melancholy at all the things you've learned about your family, WHY DIDN"T YOU JUST TALK TO THEM BEFORE THEY DIED, YOU EMOTIONALLY STUNTED FOOL!!!!"
Ahem.
Sorry, got a little bit carried away/frustrated with the game's narrator.
Which obviously caused me to view the game in a less than favourable light.
To re-iterate, it's not a BAD game, it's just one that rubbed me the wrong way often enough and/or left me kinda bored and underwhelmed with both the narrative and the gameplay itself that I couldn't possibly recommend it.
So, yeah.......not recommended, but obviously YMMV.
Hindsight is a good narrative game who's talk about loss. The story is well made with his nice designs and his relaxing ambiant. I recommend it!!! 💗
This game is a beautiful glimpse into an otherwise horrible emotion: Grief.
Grief is horrible in the sense that you hope nobody has to endure it, all while knowing that they will anyway.
Grief will change you, and you can see that through this game, and sometimes grief is the window to a change that you might've assumed to be negative, but actually is what you needed to learn.
It is shocking how much this game explores ideas I had thought myself, to the point of saying things that I had said myself verbatim.
Similarly to how I defined grief earlier, I hope none of you can relate to this game; though eventually, we all will, and this beautiful story - told through compelling mechanics and visuals - can unsurface emotions you had forgotten you had felt, and let you face them again.
I miss you, Brother.
An incredibly valuable story about grief, identity and unprocessed trauma. I absolutely loved the concept of perceiving events through objects that were important to the protagonist (visible in the mechanics of the game). The narration, the visuals and the music nicely set the tone, allowing the player to fully immerse in the story. Must play, especially for those who are interested in the exploration of grief and/or those who seek games that could help them process their own grief (it's 2/2 for me).
The only negative I have to point out is the price, but that heavily depends on the country. From my Polish perspective, I'd suggest waiting for the game to be on sale.
I'm not one to cry when consuming media but I'm processing recent grief and the narrative hit me like a truck. The story isn't something particularly new (child of East Asian immigrant processes how they communicate and care) but it's effective, especially with the voice acting (which I can't praise enough).
As a game, I do think it falls a bit short in parts. It's slow and some of the point-and-clicking can be clunky (although some of it was really satisfying). As an animated short film I think I wouldn't be able to offer much criticism.
It's melancholic and gets you thinking. It's definitely a bit pricey for what it is but I'm gonna recommend it for how catharthic it felt for me.
I love choose your own story video games, but this one was slow and incredibly melancholy. I would have read it as a short story and probably loved it but didn't sit well as a game.
Hindsight is a narrative-driven game that deals with themes of loss, particularly the experience of returning home. It’s hard not to draw comparisons to What Remains of Edith Finch, but here the focus is entirely on emotions, memories, and the exploration of family values, rather than using these themes as a backdrop for a series of magical stories like in The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.
The narration can sometimes be a bit heavy-handed and could have been written with a subtler touch, but the themes of memory, nostalgia, and the difficulties of communication are always among my favorites.
Although the genre is referred to as ‘walking simulator,’ there’s no actual walking involved here. Instead, scenes are observed from predetermined viewpoints, and the transitions are beautifully crafted animations that play with perspectives and significant objects from the protagonist’s past and present life, as well as the unconscious connections our memories constantly make.
Unfortunately, the game was released simultaneously on mobile and PC, and on Steam, it feels like a poorly done mobile port. The controls are clunky, there’s an odd, almost nauseating lag, and the gameplay relies on simple rotating movements and tapping on predetermined areas, which can sometimes be hard to spot. This is a stark contrast to the more traditional gameplay of Edith Finch, which, with its free exploration and numerous interactions, provided a much deeper sense of immersion — something I believe is a key strength of video games compared to other visual arts.
A rare miss for Annapurna. I’d recommend playing it on a tablet with someone who’s not a regular gamer.
This game is 7 euros on 50% sale, which is too much for what you get.
I like the genre, the art-style and what the game tries to do, but it is too little content for the price.
It is actually a 1-hour, linear, slow-paced. narrated game which is stretched to a 2-hour game by the find-the-next-thing-to-click-from-just-the-right-angle mechanic which breaks immersion into the story.
Would recommend if the game were ~3 euros and if you don't mind wasting your time spinning the view-angle around half the time.
Pro-tip: Play at 16:9 display ratio. At times it was obvious that the game was developed for 16:9 display, which made the arrange-the-table task frustrating to control on 21:9 display. Also some next-thing-to-click locations are on the upper boundary of your view-control, which would be much easier to find on 16:9.
I do recommend this game. I dont think its really worth $15 but if you catch it on a good sale, I do think it is worth playing.
On that note, there are a few things that I believe lower this game's rankings in my mind.
1. The "gameplay" feels more like a chore than anything else. Implementing a unique gameplay mechanic into a game of this genre is tough to do well. From a technical standpoint I do admire the core gameplay mechanic, but after some time it feels slow to move the camera and slow when you travel from spot to spot, and all this for seemingly no reason other than that it makes the game "more game-y". I think this game could learn a lot from Before Your Eyes' gameplay and how it immerses the player into the game more rather than how the mechanic in Hindsight seems to make things worse.
2. The writing isnt great. Its not easy to feel attached to the main character. Hindsight would benefit from using more of a show dont tell writing format. Additionally, giving us better reason to care about the characters would give the story a better emotional kick. Having said that, I do recognize that one of the core takeaways of the story is that the main character doesn't really feel like she was able to get to know who her mom really was, so I do see how it might be challenging to create a strong emotional bond .
3. One more thing for the writing is the tone. The tone felt pretty constant, which isnt necessarily bad, but it makes it a little challenging to stay engaged. Im not sure how to describe it perfectly here, but there are quite a few parts that I think could use a change in tone, and music choice to make the deeper parts stand out more.
Anyways, thats about it

Quick thoughts: A short game about dealing with childhood, Grief, and well life. I found the gameplay kinda boring and the narrative slow for my liking but the game does have quite a few momements that made me stop to think. If steam had a middle of the road option I would pick that but for now. Only worth a buy if you want some catharsis or an outlet to process emotions. Otherwise its a pass.

This interactive story is beautifully executed. Hits ya right in the feels, time and again. Loved the creative progression dynamics. As others commented, it's less of a "game," so be prepared to get lost in the linear storytelling.
