Believe it or not, Song of Horror was my very first horror game. Considering how many horror titles I have played since then, it holds a special place in my gaming journey. That said, this game is far from perfect and has its fair share of ups and downs.
Let’s start with the characters. Oh boy, they are a sight to behold! The uncanny, almost cartoonishly ugly character models definitely stood out, but not in the way you'd hope. It was hard to take them seriously at times. Daniel Noyer, one of the protagonist, is easily one of the most unlikable main characters I have come across. Erica and Grace were the only ones I even remotely enjoyed.
On the other hand, the environments were beautifully crafted. They perfectly captured that eerie, atmospheric vibe. However, the game suffers from repetitive exploration, with you running in circles through the same areas so much that the charm wears off eventually,
The puzzles were another sticking point for me. While they were meant to challenge players, they often crossed into the realm of nonsensical. It was not unusual to feel completely stumped and in desperate need of outside help.
That said, Song of Horror does shine in some areas. The mechanics of listening at doors, battling ghosts to close them, and holding your breath to avoid detection were all thrilling and unique. These gameplay elements never lost their edge and kept me on my toes throughout. Additionally, the creature designs were creepy and well-executed, adding to the tension in the best way.
Overall, I think Song of Horror could benefit greatly from a relaunch or remake to smooth out its rough edges. I would recommend it primarily to newcomers to the horror genre. It is a good introduction, but be prepared to scratch your head over some of those puzzles. If you are already a seasoned horror fan, you might find it underwhelming, though it is worth checking out for its creative mechanics alone.
Effective atmosphere, frustrating puzzles.
Song of Horror is pretty much the scariest horror game i‘ve played in a very long time. It won‘t give you sleepless nights, but it manages to maintain a generally tense and unsettling atmosphere the whole game through, even though you‘ll find out pretty soon that the game mechanics are quite repetitive and predictable and it’s actually very easy to avoid getting killed.
What brings the game down significantly are the clunky cumbersome controls and some frustratingly poorly designed puzzles. Half of them are actually clever and fun to solve, but the other half is so p*ss-poor and random that it‘s literally dumb luck if you can solve them without a walkthrough. It just throws those puzzles at you without even giving you the slightest hint how to solve them (the slideshow puzzle in Episode 3), why you need to solve them in the first place (the weird plant puzzle in Episode 4) or they are just so poor that even though you exactly now what to do, the game wants you to do it in such a highly specific way that you need to watch a walkthrough video only to see how to make your solution actually work (assembling the surgical device in Episode 4). Devs, take note: Puzzles are supposed to give your brain a good jog, but they should not be so contrived and artificially difficult that they just frustrate you.
Other than that Song of Horror is a must-play for survival horror fans and all people who want to get some good scares and don‘t mind having to look at a guide now and then. Each of the five episodes will take you about 3 to 4 hours each (if you don't cheat and at least try to solve the puzzles on your own before consulting a walkthrough), so you‘ll get pretty much bang for your buck and this makes Song of Horror recommendable even at full price if you are really that interested.

Insane puzzles and very subtle horror
I liked the atmosphere and the storyline kept me hooked, and I feel like the ending makes sense in context with what we learn as we play.
If you enjoy a story and don't mind walking around for a while I would say play it, it's not going to be as heavy with extreme scares or highly intense chase scenes and I feel like it can be fun for people who aren't too huge on massive amounts of horror, on the lower difficulties you can focus more on story/the art if that's something you prefer. On high difficulties it can be more frustrating/intense though, if you prefer to be upset constantly as a challenge.
I'd give it a shot, if you're nervous you wont like it I would say just wait til it's on sale. That's what I did.
but It's also not the type of game that would be great for everyone, especially if you prefer faster paced games.
My biggest issue with the game is a couple of puzzles were very hard for me to do without looking at a guide but honestly I have to look at guides a lot in every game as I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to puzzles.

honestly refreshing, a good horror puzzle game that has its own way of changing the genre. little feat. being able to aim your light and a story told with people. great game only on episode 1, really enjoying the game myself.

I am very late to the party, but hotdamn... this is - imho - one of the BEST horror games I've played so far!
Atmosphere is insanely well done, creepy a.f. Kudos to the sound designers and the graphics team, the use of often times very subtle noises is incredible. These guys know how to do light and shadows and the fixed cam perspetives are fantastic. If you like real old school horror pearls like the OG Resident Evil, and you can easily cope with the lack of guns: Song of Horror is for you!
The "if a character dies he/she is dead for good" is a two sided coin. It increases the tension immensely, cause - thank god - all the characters are likeable and they all have their own reason to be involved in the story. On the other hand it can be very frustrating to try and end a chapter or a whole playthrough perfectly, only to eff up one of the minigames and lose a character... and starting allover again.
The tank controls sometimes are a bit clunky, but they do the job and add to the panic when you need to be quick. Old school, in the best ways!
I mentioned being very late to the party, but Song of Horror - for me - is the best money spent this whole years when it comes to games.
I have not yet completed it, but can't wait to see the end and then go again with a different character set.
Will keep my eyes open for these devs and their future projects!

I really recommend this game. At start, permanent death is an annoying experience, especially if you are not saving your progress often. At the highest difficulty the minigames are also painful. Therefore, for the first exploration and positive experience, I suppose to start at the lowest difficulty.
When you finally beat the game mechanics (it took some time for me), you find out the game is really spectacular. The puzzles are very nicely designed, and the locations are interesting to explore. You may select different characters to play, and every of them has their own story which has influence on the walkthrough.
It's a great Lovecraftian story, maybe one of the best in the recent years. Looking forward for new games from the devs.
I can confidently say that I cannot, in good faith, recommend this game to horror fans. However, if you enjoy Lovecraftian stories, pulp detective fiction, and puzzle games, then this spooky little game might be worth checking out.
If you're looking for a classic Silent Hill- or Resident Evil-like experience, you won’t find it in Song of Horror. The only similarities it has to those survival horror games are that they share the horror genre, use fixed camera angles, and include puzzles. But that’s where the similarities end. Mentioning these comparisons might actually be detrimental to Song of Horror, as leading others to believe it's more—or less—than what it is could be misleading. If I had to compare it to anything, I’d say Still Life, Art of Murder, and perhaps even Eternal Darkness would be more accurate examples. Despite the jump scares and atmospheric aesthetics, Song of Horror is essentially a mystery game.
The main gameplay mechanics consist of exploring a small maps, listening at doors to check if enemies are on the other side (enemies you can’t fight), checking for hiding spots, stumbling upon puzzles, unlocking doors, referring to your map (if you have one), and hoping a mini-game doesn’t trigger.
The mini-games mostly involve button mashing, which can be a turn-off as it detracts from the tension. The mirror/light mini-game was the only one I genuinely liked, as I could get through it consistently. These mini-games aren't difficult, just a bit finicky. The puzzles are decent, as expected; my favorite was the projector puzzle in Episode 3. My main complaint about the gameplay, aside from the mini-games, is the ongoing theme of going against typical gamer instincts. Naturally, you want to explore areas the game isn't explicitly leading you to so you don’t miss anything, but this game punishes curiosity, leading to potential character deaths. There’s little originality in penalizing exploration if it detracts from enjoyment. Eventually, you might die enough times to skip anything not directly linked to game progression. The enemy AI also tends to add unnecessary padding, especially with “The Silence.” Imagine needing to enter a newly unlocked room, only to hear noise (which signals death) right as you approach, forcing you to leave and return to proceed.
Regarding difficulty, Song of Horror offers several options: Very Easy, Easy, Medium, and Hard—named after famous horror authors. Some difficulties include permadeath, and you can select from various characters each chapter, each with unique stats and tools. I found these aspects intriguing and enjoyed having choices.
As for the presentation, Song of Horror has incredible sound design. Visually, it’s pleasing; the details are dense, gritty, and meticulous, but it’s really the sound that unifies the atmosphere.
All in all, if you’re seeking a survival horror experience like Silent Hill or Resident Evil, this might not be the game for you. Even comparing it to Eternal Darkness is tricky, as that game allowed players to fight back, whereas Song of Horror relies on a sense of helplessness to build atmosphere. While the lack of combat can add urgency and fear, the effect fades quickly, and sometimes it can even dampen the tension. But, if you’re in the mood for a Lovecraftian puzzle game, have at it!
Es un juego que se basa en los puzzles y en la exploración. Tiene jumpscares y está bueno que sea estilo hardcore con permadeath, eso te obliga a jugar muy cautelosamente sino te vas al lobby de selección de personajes. No tiene un sistema de combate por lo que el juego se basa en escapar, correr o esconderse de tus enemigos.
Good game, really nice atmosphere and locations. Some good scares too. Played on the easiest difficulty because I don't like dealing with insta death and having to replay all. Nice that this option is there. Recommended if you enjoy horror games, bear in mind there is no action sequences in this game, only escaping/hiding and puzzle solving.
the game thinks stupid buggy QTE's and perma deathes are a good idea. Game was almost brilliant but nah it sucks don't waste your money or your time.

This rendition of "find the thing to do the thing and open the door about eight times and make sure big bad doesn't gank ya", didn't resonate with me. I get the whole spooky house escape room premise I just ain't feeling it.

Highly recommend to anyone who likes old-school horror games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Siren e.t.c.
I wasn't expecting anything special, but I must say it was a hidden gem. Nice mechanics, interesting puzzles, good atmosphere. Yes, there is a permanent death mechanic and it actually keeps you on edge. It's always better to play any other character rather than Daniel because his death is crucial (you'll have to replay a chapter rather than continue with other character, like death mechanic suppose to work). It also worth to say that there are few in-game ways to make mechanics easier. Won't spoil anything, but just know that, it's possible to find some items that makes it much easier to predict outcome of some optional encounters, or even turn-off some of specific QTE elements ;)
Overall a great game. Will definitely wait for other "Protocol Games" releases!

Upsides:
-Challenging but fair puzzles (except the first major puzzle of episode 5. Just do yourself a favor and look up the security pad scode. Even after the devs made a fix, it's still too easy to misconstrue what you're looking at and end up stuck)
-Great horror atmosphere
-Supernatural mystery story that hooks you in pretty well
Downsides:
-Not super well optimized. Had to set everything to low to get 60fps at 4k on a RTX3700.
-The survival minigames have vague tutorials, and you may lose a character or two figuring out what the game actually wants from you
Both up and down:
-Character deaths are permanent. Very cool for how it affects the story if you lose characters, and for having real stakes to your decisions and gameplay. Not that great when you try something that didn't seem all that dangerous and lose a character for it, though.
Overall - Worth picking up and giving a shot for horror fans.

Some of the graphics and animations aren't very good at all, and the voice actors and dialogue in the cutscenes are quite awful ("nobody talks like that" type of deal). But, the game does all of the elements of horror very well, is pretty dang scary, and the gameplay and puzzles are fun. They managed to make a good product with limited resources. The cast is very "diverse", but it doesn't seem forced.
This was a great game to play, highly enjoyed it. Got a few gotcha moments where I watch my characters die---but still a all round enjoyable game to play. The story was very interesting, and whats really nice is that for anyone who has motion sickness issues like myself from time to time in gaming. This game did not give me any issues whatsoever.
Great game, unique take on survival horror. Lots of fun and scares, and quite challenging at times. Visually, the game looks incredible at Ultra settings, the only complaint I have about that is the way they made the people look is a bit unsettling, which may have been a intentional decision now that I think about it. Like, something about their faces and movements. the teeth are too big and spaced out. But that didn't affect my enjoyment of the game at all, neither did the fixed-camera perspective. You get used to it quick. And the soundtrack is amazing, from the music to the ambiance, even the voice acting, the game sounds spooky af. The story is well written and not too confusing, and it flows well from episode to episode. I like the idea of having characters that could die off and if you're not careful you'll have to go it alone at the end. for anyone who enjoys horror and spooky walking sims, this is definitely worth the buy imo
I'm on the second episode playing in the Edgar Allan Poe difficulty, the final puzzle on the first episode was quite hard to find out, and the second episode is making me search around everywhere for clues and I'm loving the story. Damn that damn thing, spent like 10 min or so in front of that nasty creature from the abyss until I've learned how to breathe properly. Too curious to learn the full story, I hope Netflix don't spoil such masterpiece, but if they wanna try, it must be certainly directed by Guillermo del Toro or Mike Flanagan.
Disclaimer: Saw some people complaining about the permadeath feature, but in the first playthrough I lost all characters when I was almost solving the final puzzle / at the very end of the first episode with the last character, and in the second playthrough I went through the entirety of it very carefully and skillfully dying almost at the end and then finishing it, but the most important thing is, I've noticed some details that I didn't notice in the first playthrough, which made the atmosphere even more dense. It's lovely.

The game is undeniably terrifying, but I think what might be even more horrifying is the possibility of the main characters’ deaths. It’s not just about the scary atmosphere or jump scares; it's the emotional impact of losing characters you've become attached to. Each death feels personal and final, making the horror more intense because it’s not just about surviving the game but also keeping these characters alive. The sense of responsibility, knowing that every decision could lead to their demise, heightens the fear and makes the experience all the more chilling.

Excellent game if you simply enjoy a great ghost story and atmosphere then just keep a guide nearby and play it on easy. Some of the puzzles can be quite challenging unassisted.

Ceritanya sih bagus banget, puzzle nya cukup bikin kita berpikir keras, bahkan akan banyak habisin waktu di puzzle ya, dan juga harus lebih hati-hati jika tidak mau karakter nya hilang sehingga kita sebagai player juga harus ikut merasakan suasana di sekitar karakter yang kita mainkan. Jumpscare nya dapet, selalu pas ngagetin nya, sangat rekomen buat kalian pecinta game horror story. Mungkin rating nya akan bisa jadi 9 kalau ending nya bisa dibikin lebih baik :D
