This is as close as we gotten to JA2. JA3 has 80% of the good stuff that JA2 has. Definetaly worth it if you liked JA or JA2. Few things are simplified a bit, but combat is still very satisfying and graphics are very nice.
Also many familiar characters are back.
Great game that faithfully recreates JA2 vibe in new setting. There are some minor stuff that are uneven and unintuitive for new and old players alike but those can be fixed with mods. That makes the game a bit less accessible that it needs to be for new players. Over all the current shape of the game is probably way better than at launch, and the average review score probably is a better reflection of the release state than the stat it is in now.
One of the most well thought out turn based strategy games I've played. Veterans of the genre will not be disappointed. At every step throughout the learning curve I was pleasantly surprised at the level of detail in the game mechanics alone. The best features from the best turn based games all rolled into one. Deep D&D like rules that consider a plethora of stats, perks and geographical/weather situations. Any feature you think is missing, or perhaps feel it needs there will no doubt be a well made mod to suit. Engaging, brilliant. Only thing that I don't like that much is the player characters generic dialogue. Although I believe its supposed to be cheesy like an 80's action film. Will note that the actual in game quest dialogue quite well written.
I REALLY wanted to like this game. I love turn based strategy and its SO hard to find a genre that hits all the right notes.
This game is a really cool concept, and I bought it on sale because of the reviews. Unfortunately, its REALLY clunky. I know fans of the series love the "quirks" of it but having to manually extend mercs contracts, NO hit percentages on targets and fumbling between it automatically selecting a single squad member and the entire squad, just made it not fun.
I also personally didnt like the whole "grid travel" system. It makes it feel like its semi open world when it really isnt.
tl:dr: a lot of people like this game, I didnt.
After many hard fights, building a resource basis, preparing to upgrade your mercs - but not completing nearly all of the map, the ending was very much unexpected.
Just find the boss nest and the game is over. Very disappointing.
The variety of weapons equals JA2. There are superior ones and basic ones. Tactics are dulling.
Puzzles are ok fun but futile in the end.
Played 200 h.
Playing with mercs and mixing and matching depending on the mission is a ton of fun.
Very fun game filled with humor, fun characters, and great game mechanics. A decent enough main quest and lots of fun side quests. I saw one bug (some side quests are not completing), and have an issue with one certain game mechanic (contract extensions), though I know there's a mod for it. Other than those two small issues it's a very fun game to play.
Great tactical gameplay paired wi th funny lines!
Pretty fun game overall. Had a few rough moments, most especially during a major story point when the map gets flooded with enemy forces.
Played it almost entirely on GFN, so I couldn't use mods with it. I probably won't replay this for a long while, but when I do it'll be on my Deck so I can try some of the mods in the Steam Workshop.
While it's hard to hold a candle to the the first few releases under this name by sirtech. this sequel lives up to the original feal of the original game(sans1.13) voice acting is brilliant. Combat is amazing turn based with new dynamics. Don't get me wrong it has quirks some that add to the charm some that don't. I've played over 600 hours on two playthroughs. One w no mods. The mod market for this game is steadily growing. I will be playing this for years.
The start is somewhat difficult but the whole story-line is really great and the game is really well put together. One of the best I've played in the last years. Congratulations to the team at Haemimont Games!
The last a couple of years I have been enjoying turn based strategy games. This is one of the best out there. I was pleased to get this game as part of a bundle, but I would have paid for price for it. The humor in the game works. The game draws you in, I really feel that I am hiring mercenaries. They all come with a kind of campy 1980’s action movie persona. The turn-based combat works great. If I made a list of my top 5 turn based strategy games this would be in it.
Highly recommended if you like X-Com style games. The story is more than it seems at first glance and delver into darker topics when you least expect it, only to show you what the junkyard knights are about. (If you know you know.) Combat is great little more finesse than X-COM and it feels a little bit jank at first but that's just because they expect you to learn their system and not just play another X-COM clone.
Music is honestly hitting way higher than the budget for the game implies and is on my spotify because of it, can't get enough. The way the mercs interact with each other and you the player really give off the feeling of managing a dozen 80's action heroes and making them play nice, it sounds stressful but the game makes it fun and the excellent writing definitely helps bring it home.
Finally CO-OP!!! Not enough turn based Tactical RPGs and CRPGs have coop so any with even 2 player is a huge selling point. Awesome game makes me interested in playing Jagged Alliance 2 when im finished.
Simply the best of its genre. Interesting Mercs and in depth tacical gameplay.
The gold standard of Tactical RPG
Great game, played coop and did not complete most of the side missions. Still 60+ hours of good gameplay !
Jagged Alliance 3 is a great return to the series! The tactical combat is as challenging and rewarding as ever, with a fantastic mix of strategy and action. I love the variety of mercenaries to choose from, each with their own quirks and skills, which makes every mission feel fresh.
The story and setting are engaging, and the world-building really draws you in.
Overall, it’s a perfect blend of everything I loved about the series, with a few great new twists. Definitely worth playing if you’re into tactical strategy games!
The games lives up to the Jagged Alliance, which was arguably a game way ahead of its time.
I've always been looking for a sequel to this game. I played it while I was in college when the game was so simple. The mechanics, humor, and many other good things about this game make me keep playing it. I can replay it several times even though I've finished it with various ways of solving it.
An excellent tactics game made by people who truly enjoyed the orginal JA and JA2. It's a hard as hell game where preparation and perserverence matter as much as tactical acumen. There's a ton of larger than life characters (the humour's rarely offensive, just stupid) and fun missions throughout. I wish you could get more of the local people to join you to give a little more insight into the Legion and the people who've joined it though I get that they wanted as some shoutouts to the other games. I also had some trouble with a major mid-game mission that has a time limit, but I should have used more save slots.
The tactical maps are a major highlight with multiple points of entry and various ways to approach missions for many areas as well as a massive amount of traits and skills to choose from that really make different teams have to take a different tack in each encounter. Is the skill system unbalanced? Yes. Is the game still fun to play and easy to make unoptimized skills a part of your roster? Yes.
Overall a fun and silly tactical game that unfurls like an old action movie and plays like the old JA games.
Waited so long for JA that was as good as the original or better. I enjoyed this one and it was as much fun for me as the original JA
Seems deceptively simple to begin with when compared to similar games (XCOM2 etc) but complexity grows over time until it has some interesting nuances.
Personally I like the goofy characters and their interactions. The only downside is that they aren't well balanced so some are much more powerful and others are become non-viable choices to play (even if their characterisation is fun).
A hidden gem.
there is a lot to like about this game. but played the game for awhile but it was too easy. I started over amping up the difficulty settings and its a still a bit to easy but because I am on ironman type mode I am now stuck in a battle I cant win because there isn't any warning how how insanely difficult the battle may be or that you'll be fighting a battle at all. Now I have to start the game completely over again if I want to get past this point.
Remember the old Good Jagged Allianes ??
Well This is new And better.
Gret stories great fun
Surprisingly fun.
While the game is really confusing at first. But if you can trudge through it and come to understand the game, it is really good. Some mods can help alleviate this problem too.
What I like most is your mercenaries. They are all quiet charming and diverse in personality. They have people they like and don't like. They have unique dialogue to say in situations around the games. They are what get me through the learning phase of the game.
The game is pretty fun and has its own uniqueness, having several improvements over JA2, mainly:
> more personalised characters (Unique perks and interactions between some mercs),
> Graphics (Evidently sharper),
> side quests (some even have their own unique outcomes),
> more interactions with NPCs,
> weather,
> enemy variety,
Some cons (Though not gamebreaking):
> Inventory management - bit of a mess in organising as it is now slots than weight. Comparing equipment and ammo across teams can be quite tedious.
> Mercs skins (They don't change in appearance with different armour, just their base model)
> Fewer weapons compared to JA2 and JA2:UB
Some parts are made simpler (e.g. merc leveling and training, mechanics like sleep, energy, camouflage, ), while other aspects are more detailed (e.g. side quests, merc perks, dialogue, weapon modding, enemies, combat).
The tone of this game is different, more modernised and less gritty than the predecessor. Not much comment on the music and soundtracks.
Overall, enjoyable game and different take on this series. Finished the game once, so I hope the developers will add more content and DLCs in the future. Might replay JA2 to feel the difference.
Generally speaking i like the game.
What i like
1. Uniqueness of all locations. If you played in XCOM or Warhammer 40k chaos gate you know that there some pool of location and mission types so the game become boring after some time. This game more like fallout 1,2 which i like a lot.
2. Preserved spirit of universe JA. Nice job.
3. A lot of nice surprises are waiting for the players. Yo can be attacked in very unexpected moment. Some conversations are quite funny.
But there is always room for improvement.
1. AI sometimes to stupid when stealth mode is used. They search the same area many times, stuck in the bushes, rooms and run in some weird directions. I think devs could borrow some ideas from XCOM LW. AI there is quite smart.
2. More loot. It would by nice to have some legendary loot which is hard to find or buy. This would make players more accurately explore the game or even to play it once more.
3. I know that devs deliberately didn't introduce accuracy chance or crit chance mechanic within the game in order to not repeat XCOM, but sometimes i felt like i want to have it. This would give players a possibility to create a perfect build for characters they play.
A proper sequel to Jagged Alliance 2! Having played hundreds of hours of JA2 back in the day, this is definitely the real deal - the mercs, the story, and the gameplay are on point. It's certainly not a perfect sequel, and there's a few rough edges here and there, but overall it plays right. One of the things I appreciate most is how battles in JA3 don't feel like puzzles where you have to chain certain things in the right order to get it right - firefights get genuinely unpredictable, and different weapons or skills can quickly solve things or create chaos. A lot of it is cleverly-disguised (or just blatant) RNG, but it all comes together well. There are even some really good quality-of-life improvements compared to older games - I would especially praise the very intuitive yet detailed inventory management.
The setting and story are pretty good. I don't think it's masterpiece writing by any means, but there are some very good twists and some really challenging conundrums that the game will throw you into. I might be a remembering JA2 with a bit of nostalgia, but it does feel like the voice lines for mercs in this one are a little more obnoxious than I remember them from the old days - maybe it's just that the humour hasn't aged that well, but they can sometimes be genuinely annoying. This matters little though, because the gameplay is just that good.
My main complaint about this game, if I had one, would be the dodgy pacing and event triggers: it feels like the game is set up for you to progress through the story in a certain order, but sometimes you end up encountering events that you never got the backstory for, or worse - get railroaded into some dramatic, game-changing events long before you have a chance to build up a squad that can handle them. I had to reload quite a ways back several times, and at one point even restart my playthrough altogether, because of ending up in impossible situations. Save often, and prepare for some setbacks.
All in all, however, this is a worthy sequel - not a cheap imitation or a lazy remake, but a game that genuinely understands what made its 20+ year old predecessor so good and builds on that legacy.
Good game, lots of fun and challanges!
In short it's been a long time since I last played Jagged Alliance 2 but to me Jagged Alliance 3 seems a worthy successor. Somethings it does better, some probably worse but it is good enough time especially if gotten in a sale.
Some random thoughts after just completing the game:
-Initiating stealth attacks with ambushes seemed a bit hectic as that's in real time before turn based combat begins but once sniper rifles become available, its satisfying to drop enemies like flies in a single barrage (think South Park episode Fatbeard ending).
-there is a lot of fighting with spawning enemy raids so once far enough in the game I'd use autoresolve for some minor skirmishes to avoid spending real time though you'll spend game time in recovery.
-There's a twist that might end up ending some playthroughs. I didn't know it was coming but as a typical RPG player, I go for side questst first then main quest so my mercs were trained & leveled up with strong economy as I'm turtling through sectors.
-There is a distinct lack of information on some feature like perks. Some have numbers like 15% more damage, othersare more vague with "more something". There is a mod that allows respeccing, I suggest using that as a reserve.
-The merc personalities and banter are a core feature. I just wished they'd talk more to each other in the various gameplay situations.
-The art style on some of the mercs is not very .. aesthetic? Compared to JA2 e.g. Fidel, Fox (almost all female mercs) & Scully look really weird. But characters like Shadow and Reaper look nicely updated.
That's it. Kudos to Haemimont Games for finally making avaialble a proper Jagged Alliance sequel after 25 years. Hopefully we don't have to wait so long for number 4!
For full disclosure, I played with mods: show aim percentage (no matter what the devs say, leaving this out is weird choice and luckily they made an official mod), more ammo (lack of ammo was a common complaint in early reviews) and mines not running out. In hindsight the two latter may have needed to be toned down as ammo and money were abundant as not to affect decision making after a certain point. Still, it allowed to focus on the core game play and not to worry if I have enough ammo for weapons or do I need to carry five rifles with 10 rounds each. I like certain tactical games but am not too good at them or rather not spend too long making the optimal play with too scare resources - limited time to spend on games these days.
After waiting for a proper sequel for 20+ years, I am confident to say that they nailed it!
Respecting both fans of the original(s) and accommodating to the new generation, the game is made with love and passion.
After playing for a day and getting accustomed to the new UI and a few minor changes in the gameplay, it feels and plays like a 2nd installment.
Do you like Tactical turn based combat? Do you like cheesy action movies?
Remember when games were just trying to be fun? This game is just trying to be fun. It's not trying to maximize customer wealth extraction, it's just trying to be a funny, tactical turn based, action game about a nowhere country where you shoot assholes, make a buttload of money, and defeat/join a bunch of weird b-movie action villains.
I used to play a tabletop RPG called Twilight:2000, and its paramilitary spin-off, Merc:2000. The Jagged Alliance games capture the feel of Merc:2000 better than any other video game I've tried. Jagged Alliance 3 has successfully brought the series into the 21st century. This may be my favorite video game of all time.
I'll start by saying I love tactical RPGs. And this is one of those for sure. I like the comedy of this game and the gameplay. The skill tree is OK and the combat can be frustrating, but bare-able. I love the difficulty of the genre as well. But the weird, seemingly unbalanced money system of this one makes it difficult in a way that is not fun. I don't find it "fun challenging", just an annoying element of the game that sucks the fun out of it.
At the end of the day, I did not finish this game, and the saves I have puts me in the position that I can't move forward. So I'm pretty much stuck. This likely means I won't be finishing the game. Too far into it to start over it, but busted saves from non-optimal decisions means I'm cooked. I will recommend it because many fans of the genre will love it, but I only "liked" it.
Jagged Alliance has always been a unique tactical strategy game with its own distinctive mechanics and style. As a kid, I couldn’t really appreciate this masterpiece (mainly due to a lack of brainpower), but I’ve finally gotten my hands on the “fresh” installment of the series.
Right from the start, I had a sense of deja vu—the game initially felt complex and unwelcoming. I guess I’ve gotten used to modern games guiding you step-by-step through all the mechanics. Here, you’re given just a few basic text hints. It was funny to see a “tip” pop up at hour 19 of my play through. Still, once I got through the prologue and figured out (or so I thought) the game’s core systems, the learning phase smoothly turned into a planning and conquest phase.
In terms of gameplay mechanics, it really reminded me of Silent Storm, a game I spent a lot of time with and used to consider one of the most well-designed and engaging tactics titles. This game even has destructible environments! Not fully destructible, of course, but I was thrilled when an RPG blast knocked down a house wall. I thought that kind of tech was long gone—but apparently not! Interestingly, there’s no visible hit percentage when shooting at enemies, so you’re basically firing “by feel.” At first, I didn’t like that system (and yes, you can change it with a mod), but eventually I got used to it and actually started to enjoy it—it makes the game feel more realistic (though I did resort to save-scumming now and then).
Around hour 30, defending and capturing territories started to feel a bit repetitive, and I thought I was done with the game. But the next morning, like an addict, I was booting it up again, ready to wipe out more bad guys. And I think that says a lot—the core mechanics work so well that you just don’t get tired of playing.
Combat alone isn’t enough—you also need to study the map, prep your squad, manage weapons and ammo, and most importantly, keep your finances in check. It may sound like a grind from the outside, but these layers actually make the experience more engaging and push you to think strategically. I never expected to enjoy spending so much time on the world map.
The mission maps almost always have something interesting—a unique location or character. At first, I was skipping the dialogue, thinking this was just a mercenary conquest game. But once I started paying attention, I realised I was missing out on a surprisingly well-written and often funny story. Even though dialogue is presented through static character portraits, the voice acting is excellent and adds a lot of immersion. The quests, while often classic “fetch this, do that” types, are surprisingly creative and sometimes even interconnected. You rarely see that level of design anymore, even in AAA titles. The lack of obvious quest markers actually makes things more fun—you have to think a bit and interact with the world yourself. There’s also a lot of well-done, tongue-in-cheek humour and references. Surprisingly, the dialogue system feels fully fleshed out and offers meaningful variations, though I’m not entirely sure how much they affect gameplay.
At some point, I thought nothing could stop me… but after a certain story twist, my squads got completely overwhelmed. I fought for several days trying to hold my ground, desperately trying to keep my mercs alive, but the enemy forces just kept coming—and eventually I hit a wall. And that’s where my playthrough pretty much ended. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to recover from the mistakes I made in earlier parts of the game… but it doesn’t change the fact that this is an outstanding tactical turn-based strategy game.
Really fun game. I enjoyed JA1 back in the 90's. JA3 is an awesome new experience. Excellent job to all the Developers.
Just about everything that you could ask for with a Jagged Alliance sequel. Finally a worthy adaptation and one that helps to highlight the possibilities in the genre, providing a wide range of personalities and factions who can grow during play without being restrictive or generic. Definitely a game to try if one has played Phoenix Point, X-Com, Invisible, Inc. or Phantom Doctrine and loved most of those games. Excellent modding community. About as good as it gets!
Brilliant game. A lot of work went into this game an the missions. If you liked comandos you would love this!
With > 100h playtime anything but an absolute recommendation would be pathetic. However, there is one major flaw which i`d like to address: the questionable decision of letting the players have their own experience and not giving any guidance. This may have been a thing in the 90ies where numerous magazines have provided that, but nowadays i expect that to be _in_ a game. Because if you really like to enjoy the game in one playthrough, then i would advise to read acc. reddit guides and watch youtube videos like "things i`d wished i had known... jagged alliance 3". Beside that, this game follows into the ranks of iconic games like witcher 3 thanks to its challenging difficulty and its wonderfully designed story (plus side quests).
Very cool game, but after 5 hours of smooth gameplay (PC, Win11), the game started crashing. And not just once or twice, but ever 3-4 minutes. Went through all the forums, tried all the tricks - nothing helps. And as the game gets apparently no support anymore - I feel I was ripped off.
Until there is no viable solution for these constant crashes (probable reason for them being a recent Win11 update), I would not advise anyone buying it. Very sad.
This is a fantastic strategy and tactics game. Put tons of hours into it and looking forward to playing it again. If you liked Jagged Alliance 1 & 2, this is a true successor and has now replaced them as my favorite Jagged Alliance game. Highly recommend it to anyone who likes a solid tactics game with a solid meta layer of strategy with it
Best new 3d tactical shooter. Great controls mapped to game pad. since 1.5 runs well, lots of good mods, keen for more in the series from these devs
Great game, really keeping up the feeling of the series. If you enjoyed JA2, this will be up your alley!
Pros
- The sandbox / open-world campaign should be the gold standard for these kind of games. Because -
- There is a large roster of unique colorful characters - unique both in terms of traits and abilities in gameplay, as well in personalities in how they react to events in the game, instead of mindless clones as seen in games like XCOM or BattleTech.
- There are no artificial difficulty gimmicks that get in the way for enjoyment such as campaign timers, restrictive save systems.
- Crisp enjoyable turn-based combat
- Large tiered collection of weapons with extensive customization options.
Cons
- Awful unintuitive unreliable dysfunctional stealth mechanics.
- Equipped armor does not show up on character models.
[*] Melee combat could have designed to be more useful and practical.
great game, I totally love those turn based and this is a great example
Really enjoyed this game. I have fond memories of JA2 and this did not disappoint. Truly a fun and enjoyable game. Gotta always have an Ivan on my Squad!
I have a lot of time in JA2. More than X-Com because I enjoyed the banter and side quests.
It's not perfect. I think it has some pacing issues. By the time you can afford the higher mercenaries you don't need them. (Why would I pay 20k a week for a new level 5 mercenary when I have a level 8 for half that?) Combat devolves into attack at night, lie prone, and pick off guys as they run toward you. Also, there is tones of ammo, but you are really only going to use 3 sizes of AP. That said, these were the same in JA2...
All in all I think it is well worth the money.
Big fan of Jagged Alliance 2 vanilla and the upgraded v1.13 of the game. Jagged Alliance 3 is a worthy sequel. There are some annoying things about the base game so downloading mods from the workshop I can tailor the game to suit my preferences. I wish the developers would release a DLC with additional content.
It's a pretty good tactical game though I feel like it leans a bit too much into RPG than I wanted. Tone is a bit silly and goofy but there is a lot of tactical depth here.
The best Jagged Alliance yet. The voice acting is a bit flatter than in JA2 and the comedy doesn't hit quite as hard, but the gameplay, graphics, depth, and smoothness is top notch. Well worth the sticker price.
Just finished this game and really enjoyed it. Played on both PC and Steam deck OLED which does require some settings adjustments but is playable. I'm a fan of turn based games and while JA3 has quite a bit more logistics and map control management than I'd have preferred, the challenging battles and story-line kept me going. It's the clear the team put a lot of work and care in to this game with fun characters, detailed environments and more depth to the world than I expected. Slight annoyances for me were the inventory juggling and missing the areas on the satellite map where you had to scroll down to see additional choices. Some very satisfying combat and memories. Also, haven't experienced any of the freezes or issues which some reviews mentioned.
