Unlike many bullet hell arcade games Voidrun does not give you a gun. Instead you must encircle your enemies with Void Balls and watch its power destroy them. However, you must pick your attacks carefully: The void balls are also your only way of blocking enemy projectiles.
Voidrun also features your favorite mechanics from recent rouge-likes:
- Travel through up to 9 different worlds over your playthroughs
- Select from 9 different ships
- Play through 4 different difficulty modes
- Chose from 19 unique power-ups
In each run you must void four planets, but watch out! For each planet you void, one power-up will be removed…

Absolutely fantastic core idea and design. Execution feels overly targeted to a very hardcore audience. I really like the game, but its simply too hard for me to get very far. If you like a epic challenge, this is an amazing game. :)
I really want to like voidrun, but I simply cannot. It's jam packed with cool and genuinely innovative ideas, but is marred by the single worst pacing of any game I've played.
A core mechanic of voidrun is managing the stock of orbs you have on hand, so that you do not run out while battling enemies. However, you need to get more orbs than you start with to defeat enemies. How do you get more? By creating circles over empty ground hoping to uncover some orb ups. And you do this for the first half of your time in a level, EVERY LEVEL!
In addition, the speed of the game is directly tied to your screen's refresh rate, and if you're stuck with a particularly slow or fast rr, then it becomes way too slow to be fun, or way too fast to be playable.
Voidrun has some very interesting and fun ideas, like a "downgrade" upgrade system, and unique combat, but it's just too jank to be fun.
Alright, maybe I haven't played this enough to fully appreciate it, but Voidrun kinda isnt all that great. The overall gameplay is good in concept but you tend to be pretty underpowered at the start of each stage. Enemies can sometimes be totally fair and have cool mechanics, but others just randomly evade your attacks without a consistent way to trap them, or hit you point blank with unreactable projectiles. The hitstop effect whenever you pick up a powerup or defeat an enemy also sometimes leads to getting distracted and then hit by an attack as soon as it ends. Bosses can sometimes be cool, but can also take an annoying amount of time to beat due to similar evasiveness and unfair attacks. The classic mode is neat but extremely difficult, the arcade mode is kinda bad since you only get one life for the entire thing, and the adventure mode is probably the best one, but the balancing is all over the place, and the system of "sacrifice your ability to fight to get minor upgrades" isnt very good either, as well as the general lack of extra lives making it very difficult to make much progress unless you finish every stage without a single death. The soundtrack is definitely the highlight though, much like most bad sonic games. If you're interested, id reccomend just waiting for a sale if you REALLY want the game, but if you're on the fence, i'd say don't.
Basically QIX with a ton of variables. Has roguelite elements in that each run has a slightly different enemy and powerup selection. One of the best GAME OVER screens ever that you will see a lot of. This game is a blast and arcade-y to the bone. Plays great on cabs and uses a single joystick and two buttons. Get it!
Completely Unfair.
Great game. Very satisfying and addictive game mechanic.
The game looks great and the concept is definitely interesting.
But some combination of the core mechanics and enemy design just leads to extremely tedious and frustrating gameplay. Would not recommend.
The simple, random nature of each run keeps it feeling new. After a roulette of a few perks youre presented with a varying selection of planets to conquer, each with their own amazing soundtrack, crazy enemy types and environments to either destroy or use to your advantage. Encasing aliens in a nullifying ring of void balls takes some skill, a little patience and yeah, a lot of balls. Voidrun would have been a black hole for quarters back in the day
This is a hell of an arcade game. It'll test your wit and ability to think on your feet to keep moving forward, with a great retro feeling to a modern game. A++
Voidrun is a bullet hell game that rewards patience and cunning above all. Dodging is involved, yes, but you win by identifying weaknesses and setting up traps in just the right way. I found this game fresh and innovative, and hope more people give this little-known game a try.
The soundtrack is the best part of the game.
Possibly inspired by that one computer game from the late 80s I can't recall the name of, Voidrun tries to present the player a slightly different approach to space shooters, but ends up slowing down the gameplay a tad too much. Imagine an archery game where you have to pick up every arrow you shoot. If that's your thing, then you'll love Voidrun.
Still, it's a decently fun game and worth its price, just not something I would sing praises for. Given Steam's binary scoring system for reviews, I'm more inclined to choose "yes" rather than "no".
-Enemies should less sensitive for your presence and move on their track. Like gal's panic.
-Limitation on 'line' is not good difficulty control method
-Why there is time stop effect after every kill. it's annoying.
Cautiously recommend but only if you're a hardcore fan of arcade pixel games. My playtime is due to having left the game idle - actual time played ~5hrs and it was okay.
Pros -
Unique reinvention of oldschool Qix mechanic and a good microgame in its own right - lots of inventive enemy designs and some fresh twists. Slick retro style. Awesome dark theme and some nice angsty chiptunes. 3 game modes with some minor unlockables, though imo I only recommend Adventure Mode (somewhat hidden beneath the other two) and mostly enjoyed it. There's a lot to love about the core mechanic once you get the right combination of powerups so as to make the game speed up a bit and flow well.
Cons - With the 'default' ship and no upgrades, the flow doesn't escalate well and most stages finish in an anticlimactic 'mop up' of the last straggling enemy which turns a fun activity into a slow drag. Some frustrating readability issues arise from the visual busy-ness + intricate dodging mechanics - the fact that your friendly 'void balls' and enemy bullets both flash similarly, cluster around the player at crucial freezeframe moments, then spray in similar patterns making them difficult to tell apart- it's deadly confusing frustrated the hell out of me, more often than not this is what killed me and it felt unfair. This, and the final boss is a tree with a huge canopy you can't see through till you pass beneath it - I died several times instantaneously coz I collided with a bullet or enemy which was revealed a fraction of a second earlier. Also, had a sound bug which sorta ruined the beautiful atmosphere of the post-game cinematic.
Verdict: Not bad, the 3 game modes seem a bit odd since having tried them all I recommend not the default but the 3rd 'Adventure' one. Massive kudos for the passion which obviously went into this game - worth a go if you love retro-pixel games with inventive mechanics.
somehow confusing for beginners, a lot of trial and errors. but a neat idea executed well enough to be very fun.
Loads of interesting, tricky life-forms to entrap and explode.
A selection of exotic planets to obliterate.
Fine tunes to enjoy, while you eradicate all life in the void.
Love the art style and music, and plenty of variation to the interesting game play mechanics. Great arcade game!
Voidrun is easily among the top 5% of arcade games when it comes to creativity, content and game settings. With 3 different modes, a ton of achievements, and original gameplay, you are getting a pretty good value for a relatively low price. I mean the game is just really solid, but I have some nitpicks when it comes to difficulty and enemy balancing. The thing is, most of the enemies in this game can attack and move very rapidly without telegraphing their abilities. For example, there is a ghost enemy in the game that has a nice delay and flashing before it attacks, and then there is a space ship that just shoots and flashes at the same time. You have to be very close to enemies to surround them which takes around 2-5 seconds, and yet most of them can move into any direction under 2 seconds, so sometimes your deaths can be unfair. Then there is some kind of giraffe enemy that occasionally charges from the bottom of the screen, if you are moving down at the same time, there is no ****** way to react to it (if you playing arcade mode, that can be a little annoying). That being said, the core gameplay is still very enjoyable, I like how you can destroy parts of the planet which prevents ground enemies from walking around.
The game has 3 different modes, including a classic mode, arcade, and adventure - I like 2 of the 3. Classic mode so far is my favorite, just choose a planet, beat the boss, and move to the next planet, with some upgrades along the way. It even has a pool of planets from which your classic mode is generated, each seemingly ending with a unique boss fight. I don't particularly like the arcade mode here for various reasons, but mostly because it goes from 0 to 100 in about 2 minutes, not having a nice difficulty curve or any specials features to make it interesting. Considering that game has some power-ups and RNG, more of that should have been implemented into arcade mode which is bare-bones compared to the other 2. The adventure mode is similar to classic, but with more freedom and flexibility, I guess it's a bit more forgiving. You can do limited exploration by choosing the order of the levels and advancing after completing each planet (kinda similar to the story mode in 'Hell is other Demons'). Taking into account all of the things that you can do and unlock, you are probably looking at several hours of new content.
Pros:
+ good game settings & can remap controls
+ unique gameplay & interesting mechanics
+ different modes, plenty of content
+ awesome soundtrack
+ achievements & some unlocks
Cons:
- some enemies lack attack indication, and don't give you a reasonable window to respond
- I think arcade mode needs to be more gradual, could use more features
Overall Thoughts: 8/10
In general, the game is very good and clearly had a lot of polish, but I just don't like how the enemies behave here. Perhaps a compromise would be to reduce enemy speed on lower difficulty settings (further if it already does that), and some of the enemies are still lacking visual indications before attacks. Looking forward to playing more of classic and adventure mode, the arcade mode, not so much, at least not in the current state.
