"Picross Hansel and Gretel - Nonograms" is a basic Nonogram game... for those who never played one, it's a kind of grid-deduction-puzzle game, not unlike Minecraft or Sudoku. You're given a grid and a number of numerical clues. You must deduce where the safe places to click are. In a Nonogram, the correct clicks will reveal a small, obviously low resolution image or pattern. Yay, what fun. This is why top of the line gaming PCs costs thousands of dollars, right?
The developer, Creobit, has copy + pasted this game an insane FOURTY ONE TIMES... why cash in on one asset if you can cash in on multiple copies of the same game? Asset flipping begins at home!
Here's a list of the asset flips of this game that the Russian "developer" is polluting Steam with:
- Asian Riddles 1, 2, 3 + 4
- Christmas Griddlers
- Christmas Griddlers Journey to Santa
- Detective Riddles - Sherlock's Heritage 1 + 2
- Easter Riddles
- Egypt Picross Pharaohs Riddles
- Fill And Cross Christmas Riddles
- Fill and Cross Magic Journey
- Fill and Cross Pirate Riddles 1, 2 + 3
- Fill and Cross Royal Riddles
- Fill and Cross Trick or Treat 1, 2 + 3
- Fill and Cross World Contest
- Griddlers Beach Season
- Griddlers Legend Of The Pirates
- Griddlers TED and PET 1 + 2 (this game)
- Griddlers Victorian Picnic
- Halloween Patchwork Trick or Treat
- Halloween Riddles Mysterious Griddlers
- Magic Griddlers 1 + 2
- Olympus Griddlers
- Picross Beach Paradise
- Picross Bonbon - Nonogram
- Picross Fairytale - nonogram: Red Riding Hood secret
- Picross Fairytale: Legend of the Mermaid
- Picross Hansel and Gretel - Nonograms
- Riddle of the mask

These are all reskins of exactly the same game!
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no options to change the resolution for the game or customise the graphics settings. There's no way for gamers to ensure this is running at the native resolution of their displays... there's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. There's no way for gamers to try improve the low quality graphics.
The game features extremely lazy, minimalist "art", of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing.
The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio (with crappy "wings" to pad out the space). It's possible they developed this using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game has been specifically designed for people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming.
The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here.
This looks and feels like a mobile app, but it doesn't seem to have made it to the app stores. It's unclear why this was put on Steam instead of the app stores it seems to have been designed for. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all).
Regardless, for all intents and purposes this might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
"Picross Hansel and Gretel - Nonograms" didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for finishing 3 levels, trivial to get, but less than 16 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game.
"Picross Hansel and Gretel - Nonograms" has the gamer gouging price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
Broken achievements that devs do not care enough to fix.
ok
A fun picross game, but if you uninstall the game when you don't play and reinstall it your progress will be deleted...which is unfortunate :(
Only get this game IF you absolutely love Picross and have played everything else. It's a glitchy, broken, lazy mess. At best the puzzles work, but the checker isn't accurate ( 1, 4, 5 reads the same as 4, 1, 5...it just checks for the sets of boxes and not if they're in actual order), there's a chest that supposedly gives you gold....but doesn't give you gold, the achievements are mostly broken (I unlocked the achievement for beating every puzzle like 30 puzzles in) and you will have to download an official fix someone made if you want them all. I got this on sale for like $1 and even that was a stretch for "worth it".
It's picross, I'm not sure what more you want. Not entirely certain why it's been getting negative reviews, but if you're looking for a bunch of picross puzzles, here you go.
Decent puzzles, completely broken achievements. Definitely not worth full price.
The big problem here is the totally inappropriate (and partially broken) microtransaction monetization scheme left in the game. The puzzles are OK, with some minor flaws. The freedom to make mistakes then fix them without being immediately yelled at is good.
Finally a picross game with the BALLS to go 20x20
Another decent set of Picross / Nonogram puzzles with a fantasy fairytale theme but with drawbacks
Sequel to Picross Fairytale - nonogram: Red Riding Hood secret (mouthful of a name), Hansel and Gretel offers more of the same.
Almost literally the same.
The map is the same, UI has the same functionality, the mini puzzles are the same old samey. Even the music (okay as it is) is the same, so having grown tired of it, I muted it to listen to something of my own.
Like the first game, this one has:
- Nice amount of content: 156 nonogram puzzles
- Large puzzles: Ranging from about 8x8 all the way to nice and big 30x30 in size
- Only one solution per puzzle: No guesswork required, only logic
- Basic expected features: crossing off un-used spaces, and a mark when a row/column is done
- A save system: handy when it takes a good part of an hour for the bigger puzzles
- Buy a hint system, with in-game gold purchases
- A system to check correct lines: incredibly helpful when you've got that one tiny mistake somewhere
It does *not* have greying out of the outermost completed parts of the puzzle like some other nonogram games.
Hints and in-game gold purchases
While the game costs actual money, it also has in-game gold purchases for real currency. A weird choice for a not free-to-play game but there you have it. However, there's a free chest of gold to grab each day, and it's earned also from completing puzzles. There's a minor slow down at the beginning of the puzzle when ticking spots rewards gold, a novel annoyance not existent in the first game.
Gold can be used to buy hints. Hints reveal random guaranteed spots of the puzzle. Unlike in the first game, this one hosts an achievement for completing all levels without using hints or checking for correct lines. For achievement hunters, this is a slight bummer. Yet, there is one for purchasing and using hints. Unfortunately, it is not even working.
Broken achievements
Three of the achievements are broken (discussion link), at the time of typing. This is probably a mistake in the code and easily fixed, as some user has posted an unofficial patch to fixing it. Like always with unofficial fixes like this, if you're an achievement hunter I caution to using it: it might disqualify your profile on certain achievement tracking sites.
Otherwise, achievements are gained for beating levels and proceeding the storyline. Puzzles are generally non-skippable, though I managed to glitch-skip one and break the story a bit.
A full guide exists for puzzle completions but you symbolically lose the bragging rights using that. :)
More puzzles to spend time
There's a few puzzles less than the first game (156 vs. 200 of the first game), and they seemed easier to me, though I've learned a few new tricks so perhaps those made it faster this time. My completion time was about 40 hours.
With smaller set of puzzles, broken achievements and copy-pasted features (except for the tiny story), I find it a weaker game than the first one and one I cannot recommend. The first one is alright (review) to play though. Then only if you are craving for more and knowing the caveats, you could get this one on sale.

The game itself is fine. Basically like the two predecessors, but with different puzzles. The puzzles are a lot easier than in the previous installations, at least it took me only a fraction of the time to complete all of them. Simplistic backstory, decent artwork.
There is a massive problem however, the achievements are a broken mess. Many of the ingame achievements are mapped to the wrong Steam achievements, one of the Steam achievements isn't mapped at all and can't be unlocked. While the problem was easy to identify and would be equally easy to fix (1 to 2 days of work at most including testing), the publisher doesn't show any real interest in fixing it. Saying that they are working on it (a few months ago) or looking into it (a few weeks ago) cannot be taken seriously due to the nature of the problem, it would have been fixed a long time ago if they had actually bothered to try. That is more than enough reason to recommend against this game.
Loads of nonograms to gnaw on!
Picross Hansel and Gretel, like Picross Fairytale, is a paint-by-numbers puzzle game. Unlike the latter game, it is both much more polished and much less lengthy. This game took roughly half as long to complete (for me, almost 100 hours). I was thus disappointed in the gametime it provided. Over all, though, I enjoyed the game for the puzzles it does contain. On sale or free, this game is well worth acquiring.
I don't mind the mobile game interface, i do mind the mobile game microtransaction tactics. Basic features like line validation are hidden behind a virtual currency you can buy. And i missed that fact when i bought this. Asking for a refund now.
My favorite nonograms are here.
They can be devilish complicated.
They can be solved by logic alone, without using hints - if you dare.
You can make mistakes and erase them, or fill in tentatively and until you ask to freeze the full columns or rows you pay no penalty.
I have already done 100 levels, 3 stars, no hints!
This is my favorite picross developer!
What is different from "Picross Fairytale" from the same studio:
-different (short) "intro" dialogue
-menus has lollipop rather than wolf theme slider
-help menu gameplay has been rewritten a little bit differently
-there is a new additional shop purchase option of 800'000 coins for 99.99$
-the puzzles are different
That's pretty much it, everything else it about the same. some steam achievements title, image and requirements are actually event identical :/
If you already tried and like other picross games from this studio, I guess this game is for you!
If you are annoyed at 'x' erasing painted tile,
if you like to have undo/redo button,
if you like to have row/column highlight always present on the puzzle (not only on click),
if you like yo choose your next puzzle and not be constrain to only 1 new puzzle,
IF YOU THINK ACHIEVEMENTS IN CAPS ARE WEIRD,
go play other picross game!
I guess you could just focus on the new puzzles to discover and still enjoy it, it's just that there is better picross out there in the world.
Nice one. 10/10
Refunding. It doesn't tell you when you made a mistake and you can't clear a box you accidentally marked. The puzzle will not end until it is all correct, so you have to keep checking. Also, it has pay to play content. I know it was only 59 cents, but it is just too awful to even play.
