Unbalance and abandoned.
Great ideas, gorgeous art, huge waste.
Super fun, deep, and rewarding merger of a tactical turn-based RPG and a deck-builder. You build a party of 3, each character having their own deck built from their equipment (each piece adding 1-3 cards, stats, and sometimes artifact-like traits), plus a core set of cards based on their class. Characters get to upgrade or replace one of these each level.
There's a lot to explore and different strategies to try, and the rare equipment can be pretty interesting and game changing. Finding synergies, and successfully pulling off board clearing combos, is satisfying as hell.
My one and only complaint is that initially, you can only pick from 3 classes to pick from. There are 9 in total, but unlocking them is kind of slow. It's not too too bad, I think I'll have most unlocked after this current run, and the last 3 classes maybe after a couple more. I just wish you started with a couple more unlocked from the get-go, but the game is good enough to forgive this one gripe :) Word!

This is definitely a half-hearted thumbs up for this game.
I guess I'm not a huge fan of cards you get that come with the equipment. There are skills involved with each piece you get, which could be good but also bad. Yes, there's a "honing" function so that you may get rid of the "bad" skills but you have to have the materials to do that and of course those are usually expensive or you have to find them randomly in each point of interest.
Unfortunately there's a time limit and so you can't just move around collecting all of these pieces. Of course this means you'll just be SOL and you have to live with the gear.
I'm not sure, but in my first game (medium difficulty) I got to the last boss and nearly killed him. After that, I can't even make it to the 2nd boss without dying.
I do like the different characters and the willpower management system.
This game is a very difficult game. To succeed - you must do careful gear and skill card management and balancing to make it through. Even on "Easy" mode this game isn't that easy.
Great game. I have dozens of hours and have loved every one.
I am surprised this game did not get more love than it deserved. It is quite enjoyable to play.
PROS:
- I didn't play the tutorial and I picked up on the game almost 5 mins in. Easy to learn.
- Your gear affects your game play. Epic/Legendary gear does not mean your Green gear is useless. It depends on how you want to play it.
- You start with 3 classes and unlock more as you progress.
- Multiple different play modes from Story > Daily Challenges > Endless > Side Missions, etc. Keeps it interesting depending on your mood for the day.
CONS:
There isn't an indicator to let you know when enemies are getting stronger as you progress. This is quite dangerous. I died the first 2 times stepping into a fight when I am vastly out powered and out numbered. It's like going into a knife fight with a plastic straw.
Herein lies the issue. The game is tactical. If you play it right, you can easily overcome a lot of enemies without much issue. This in turn makes you more... reckless as your manhood inflates. Thinking you're invincible, you start accepting every fight option made available to you. Until you get meet a bunch of monsters with balls much bigger than yours.
Story mode could be a bit longer too but then again that's my own personal preference. As for other things, I didn't encounter any crashes or bugs and the graphics, game play, etc was pretty good.
Overall, nice. 7.5 out of 10.
Table Flip Simulator
I will start by saying this is one of the toughest roguelike deckbuilder i have ever played. While most other games are pretty easy to go through even at medium difficulty, this game take a cake since it's system required you to build your party in very specific way. The game rely heavily on RNG factor and there are just too many "GOTCHA!" moment that will ruin your run, albeit not in a good way. Despite you can learn what cards in your opponent unit, you still rely on RNG of their card draw and unable to know their intend. There is one enemy that can zoom across the board, kill your beefy tank because the board gave you open terrain.
While I like the game because Im a fan of roguelike deckbuilder, especially this one with tactical battle akin to many other turn based game out there, I need warn you that this game is really punishing. I dont care if you are expert and saying the game is all about good tactic and risk mitigation, but alas it just too annoying to a lost run after 2 hours just because final boss counter your team so hard. Especially event on the map, it give vague description without knowing what the outcome of your choice will. You might want to take a note to list all out come of each events.
Still, im insist for you to try at least clear the game with all character once because there are many fun synergies to discover. Just be ready to flip some table if lost to RNG bs.
The main tactical gameplay is solid, with a satisfying amount of options that cater to a variety of approaches. There are a handful of characters that each play out differently, and with the upgrades acquired each main quest can be tailored to very different approaches, such as shifting to mainly summoning, melee, ranged, or buffing.
The story elements are OK, but nothing to write home about. The choices at each location are a nice idea, but falls a bit flat due to repetition in the long run.
A good deck-building & tactical game which deserves more praise as it's well made product. It respects the player, gives a challenge, lot's to do and is fair at the same time. Atmosphere, music and gameplay shines as good examples. My only regret is that I missed this one earlier and only found it lately. It's an unique game with a lot to offer.
There's changing world to explore, several quests, plenty of unlocks and secrets to be found. I'd warmly recommend Trials of Fire, if you enjoy tactical roguelite games and don't mind a bit of challenge.
Lots of fun, and quite challenging. this is a great fusion of three genres I love, with mechanics and synergies that are satisfying to explore.
Kind of mad I never bought this game sooner, it's an especially fun game. While it is kind of hard at first, as you play more you unlock more content to make each of your future runs easier, whether you win or lose you will get more content. And the things you unlock have quite a bit of variety to mix up builds and playthroughs, although however it is unfortunate due to the randomly generated aspects of the game you are forced into builds you may not want, but that's par the course of ANY rogue-like games. If you like PVE card games definitely give it a try, well worth the full price and you have no excuse not to get it when it goes on sale.
I love it. My first impression 5 minutes in was not great. Felt like kind of a cheap and lame board game right off the bat. But I was very, very wrong. It is a very cool take on roguelite card battlers that adds a bit of a board game element. Once you start to get into the weeds you realize that this has some awesome depth. The idea of equipping items to bring cards into the game is super cool. And I love the mechanic where you can sacrifice cards to either move or gain defense. The setup here is actually so much more intricate than it appears at face value. I got it on sale for $5 which is an absolute steal. It is worth the full price.

Yeah, this is a good tactical, card-based roguelike. But there's an underrated feature that bumps this game up even further for me: from icon-click on the desktop to gameplay takes under ten seconds; usually around 4. If you're like me and can't stand long load times to get into games, check this one out.
Every now and then I look back at this game in my library and reminisce a bit. It was honestly a ton of fun while also delivering a gameplay system that is unique among the droves of roguelike card battlers on steam. For every bit the enemy mobs were unfair and overpowered, you equally had potential to find ridiculous combinations and abuse the AI to survive. Possibly not for the most casual of gamers hoping to coast along without worrying about their every action, as your action economy both in battle and overworld travel is vital. All I could possibly ask of this game is for the developers to release a sequel or DLC; but that seems unlikely at this time.
clever AI opponents and unique battle mechanics make this atmospheric indie gem a must-try
