Really good game to pair with other means of learning Japanese. Really helping me to memorise in a fun structures way.
pros:
+some writing practice is available with this game
+lets you practice some non-formulaic combinations of kana to really help you learn to view them as "letters" and not just identify their general shape
+has some jlpt coverage
cons:
-does not differentiate romaji spellings between ジ "ji" and ヂ "dzi"; "ji" can be entered for both and it still counts as correct. this can be especially frustrating when using this game in conjunction with other methods i.e. anki or even duolingo, where the romaji distinction is made.
-you have to unlock all kana first by doing their little lessons, which, while it doesn't seem like much, is a *huge* drag and waste of time if you have specific things you want to practice at a specific time
This game is really helpful to me because i definitely need help rapidly identifying kana in random orders, and also with memorizing how to write them. my dyslexia acts up something awful with japanese fsr, much worse than it does with english. maybe because i have 25+ years of experience compensating... regardless, i WOULD recommend this game as it offers that "random* kana string" identification exercise that i haven't found anywhere else. Would absolutely adore seeing this game updated to include a free-play kind of mode where you can practice writing random strings of kana, but i also understand this game is three years old and unlikely to get any major updates or overhauls. regardless, i still consistently come back to this for my kana practice rather than traditional flashcards, and i highly appreciate what it does for me. thank you devs!
This is perfect for those who are still at the very start of japanese. Duolingo doesn't let you learn the same words in a certain limit of characters, but this lets you repeat anything you need to repeat, and you can easily master both Hiragana and Katakana in ease if you keep up with this.
One tip, it's to always train writing in your free time those words.
Write a list on a notebook with the words you've been learning and always when you forget the certain character, go back to it.

it helped me immensely back when i was first trying to properly memorize hiragana and katakana. once you have everything unlocked doing some practice every day is invaluable to getting your reading level to the point where you read the symbols as easily as english.

This app is a fantastic way to learn Hiragana and Katakana. It's been a while since last time I studied Japanese, so I was a bit rusty... but dude this app was so great to catch up.
The repetition makes it easy for you to learn the alphabet and memorize stuff!
The game's UI and art style as a whole is also fantastic, very chill and perfect to study.
Even if you don't know a single thing about Japanese, this is a great way to learn two of their alphabets. Heck, even if you don't care about Japanese at all, you still should give it a shot IMO.

each lesson is just a quick review of the characters, you first trace them, then you play a sort of matching mini game to get a bit more familiar with them.
but ultimately the real meat comes from the test and challenge modes which are basically typing tutor games. and the way this works is you see the all the characters you covered so far forming words in kana and you have to guess and type out their roman equivalents. you have to get the whole word to get counted. you can do any word in any order so long as you get an entire word correct. i like the "training mode" as it has no time pressure and can be played indefenately.
I've tried to learn the Japanese alphabets in a few different ways: Duolingo, YouTube videos, and books among others. As you can see, I haven't played You Can Kana very much. Despite that, I can recall at least 85% of the characters the game has taught me so far, even when I haven't played in days.
Not to disparage other methods, but Duolingo throws letters at you when you're also trying to learn word meanings. Videos and books don't have spaced repetition built-in by their very nature. At the time of this writing, it feels like you have to initiate and design a spaced repetition regimen in Duolingo yourself (you can have it drill you through characters but not in a way that feels comprehensive to all you've learned).
You Can Kana only focuses on the characters and does spaced repetition properly, which is probably to only good way to start without giving up. I've taken a break from learning words/phrases in other apps and have decided to take my time with the basic alphabets and this game is what's helping it stick. It doesn't require much time, either. You can do a training session in 5-10 minutes. Even better, the game is also fun so I do two to three "workouts" each time I play.
After you've got a few characters under your white belt, You Can Kana starts making words out of them--but learning the words isn't the point. Once you've correctly guessed a word, it may or may not display to you. If the word does appear, it's very briefly and that's a good thing. It just helps knowing I've typed out (via Romanization of course) a legitimate word. I saw the characters and I knew how they should sound. I say them out loud as I'm typing, but the important part is that I'm reading Japanese.
Once I'm finished with this game, I'll return to other apps/learning tools knowing I can read any Japanese word that is written out phonetically (using Kata/Hiragana). Will that happen much in Japan? Probably not, but building this foundation with You Can Kana is only going to make basic Japanese easier. I may never learn Kanji until this developer makes a similar game for that alphabet, but I won't need to know Kanji to listen to and speak to others in Japanese.
This game is a serious investment if you want to learn Japanese. I sincerely believe this is the best place to start before moving on to other courses/programs. Here's to hoping we see a You Can Kanji in the future, despite it being a massive endeavor compared to kana/hira.
This app is simply amazing, I highly recommend it!
