Nice and (kinda) peacefully sailing adventure.
Sailing in the wind is as painful as in realife
Like a slightly simpler version of the freeform classic on PC, Sid Meier's PIRATES! Very decompressing after a day running around at work, highly recommend you try it if you enjoyed PIRATES back in the day or if you like freeform unique pirate sandboxes.
fun little game, wish it had more trading and things to do, like shipment runs etc
Quite a good, simple game that lets you enjoy the wind and waves. 8/10
I wish this game had a "meh" option. I really wanted to like this game. And there is a lot I do like about it. Visuals are simple but clear cartoony style. Audio is good, sea waves and light music are nice, and combat sounds are fine too. It's a fairly chill sailing game with lots of little things to do, and slowly opens up with more things to do as you progress. Little things to do on top of minigames (fishing, camera snapshots, loot gathering, etc), with the usual core sailing-based gameplay loop of exploration and ship combat. I fully believe others can play this game and find fun with it.
Unfortunately, there were too many things that got in the way of my enjoyment of this game.
I found the UI annoying to go through in general. It's not horrendously bad, but it could be far better, and was a constant annoyance for me.
My AI teammate ships in combat were negative IQ and found ways to get themselves killed or near death too often (and yes I am aware I can manually switch and take control of your ships, but if I have 4 ships, i can't be babysitting all 4 at all times. Plus, having to switch between each ships constantly ruins the flow of combat with the subpar menus)
It came to a head when I found, no matter what setting I put for Auto-repair on my ally ships be it high, low, or 50%, my AI ships would never repair themselves unless I went into the annoying menus repeatedly to tell them to repair manually, even when I had tons of money to cover said repairs.
I also didn't like the way combat aiming was handled. Perhaps I've been spoiled by Sid Meier's Pirates game ship-to-ship combat. Regardless, I didn't like the whole "aim at the crosshair to steady your aim" concept. It's functional, but I found it clunky and unsatisfying.
Finally, I didn't like that there was no real player input into boarding ships. it's just a simple Your Numbers vs Their Numbers, depending on your (vs theirs) crew numbers and ship health totals. This felt lame, and I wish boarding had something for the player to engage with.
This is certainly not a bad game, and if it's on sale, you might still find it enjoyable overall if my above issues either don't bother you or you can live with them.
Sadly, Too many flaws and egregious nitpicks stood in the way of my enjoyment of the game.
This has probably been one of my favorite impulse buys ever. the game itself is fun and has a good repeatability value. i'd love to see more games like this from the Development Team.
I went into this expecting a relaxing experience after reading a lot of positive reviews, and let me tell you; They were right! I'm still in my first day of playing it, but it's already fantastic, and I can't wait to spend more time in this world.
Due to health reasons, I have to be in the hospital a lot for treatment, so I'm always looking for distractions. Thank you for providing me with another.
A solid sailing game reminiscent of Sid Meier's Pirates. Same arcadey performance but a more enjoyable exploration on the seas taking inspiration from Zelda Windwaker. Good characters, amusing dialogue, and a really rewarding ship & fleet customization system.
Pause the battle! I need to fish! -priorities!
Do not let my game hours fool you. I've got this game on other platform and decided to get another copy on steam since I'm mostly active here.
The game has been a really relaxing and immersive ride, I enjoyed every bit of it; content keeps on getting thrown out, even the Maelstrom DLC; when I bought it it only had small instanced maps, now it even has bosses and entire world to explore. The amount of various gear, equipment and ships allows you to fully customize your fleet to enjoy the game as you want.
I'm glad other platform offered this game for free; since that's how I discovered it. It's been one of the most enjoyable and unique games I've played and one of the rare games on the market that I actually think they're worth their price.
relaxing and fun little pirate game I like the part where I can gamble on go fish :)
Game looks nice, but looks are not always important. Controls response is very bad. Just started a new game and even before i got a chance to play the game, i got sunk by a pirate ship. I followed the first "tutorials". Found the guy on the rock, found and equiped the cannon, shot the crate etc. Then i got directed to the initial island, but before i could reach i got shot by a pirate. I tried to turn the ship to return fire, but before i could shoot the pirate fired 2 or 3 times and i got sunk. The controls responded so bad and are the worst that i have ever encountered in a game. After this i wanted to try again and the game kept crashing, so i gave up and uninstalled for now. Maybe after some updates/fixes i will try again.
For now with all the bugs and crashes i cannot recommend the game. If it gets better i will change the review.
Fun cozy game that you can sink a few hours into!
game is good but the recent update seems to crash a bit more often, I raided 3 ships and when i tried to fast travel the game completely blacked out and took away all control, requiring a restart, and then when I loaded the game back up it was almost an hour's worth of progress lost with only 1 of those ships in my control. These were large merchant ships I took over, and was practically punished for. It happened aswell in the first boss fight, where I made it out of bounds of the game and it decided to stop working after I had already taken over the boss ship, making me redo the fight like the merchantile ships. Fun game, but annoying that all of my progress isn't saved to the last second, nor can I actually make any save states, forcing me to redo a bunch of progress because of something out of my control
this is an amazing game and to any one who likes ship fighting games and it has an amazing story
diaspora of ships on display, and unlike a lot of the other 'sims' on steam that over focuses on fully rigged, square sailed slop, this has a lot of brilliantly proportioned and detailed fore and aft designs. absolute rig-porn. (i made that up)
combat is arcade-y but there's enough nuance to have different builds. the tech tree for unlocks is good. it can be slow at points, but you can also get by perfectly well boarding and capturing enemy (or unsuspecting) ships for their kit.
Aiming could feel better, you're given a 2-d cone that represents the weapon's field of attack but not given any choice as to the vertical angle you fire it at. I concede that may just be an oversight so that combat doesn't feel too clunky, but sometimes I feel i miss shots that i might otherwise hit, given more control.
writing is light-hearted and whimsical. The sound design is pared back and uncluttered when compared to many other sailing games.
visual art direction is a high point: both timeless and eye catching. Visual clarity's great. Design of the ships, again, cannot be overstated how well it's done. The story progression is cool and some of the fights have more depth to them than i thought a naval game could have.
overall? worth it at full price. easily. it's a very, very 'cozy' game and I will show it to my friends whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Love the concept and appreciate the developer's continued updates. Absolutely worth checking out Sail Forth
I really enjoyed this game. The sailing is fun and relaxing ... despite being moderately arcade-y, it actually cares about wind and sail direction, which surprisingly puts it ahead of most other 'sailing' games on Steam.
Most of the encounters are on the easy side once you get used to things and upgraded just a bit, though. Enemies don't scale with progression.
I consider the game as a whole a pretty solid foundation for what could eventually be a great open-world sandbox game (combat, trade, exploration etc etc) if the dev ever went that route, and I hope he does.
Sailing is relaxing
Sid Meier's Pirates ass game (endearing) ((very fun very good))
As a sailor looking around for a surreal, whimsical, yet realistic sailing game, Sail Forth is what I imagined such a game to be! Sail forth!
