Enjoyed this & looking forward to future updates!
Loving this game so far. Bought it at lunch to pass the time, and now completely addicted. Probably only a couple of hours to finish based on the level I'm at now, but it was money well spent.
Visuals are really nice for the style of game it is, and the music was well composed, everything suits the game style.
Highly recommended!
My personal review of Hectic Highways:
Gameplay - 8 / 10(Fun and Addictive)
Visuals - 6.5 / 10(Looks Good, Although a Little Rough in Areas)
Controls - 7 / 10(Simple and Easy Controls)
Music - 7 / 10(Well Made and Creative Soundtrack - Can be Repetitive)
Overall - 7.5 / 10 (Great Game!)
My personal review in detail:
First of all, before I get into the game, I will like to say that the video and images definitely caught my attention from the steam page as well as the attractive design for the title which is really catchy, its great haha. It immediately caught my attention that this was a obstacle based game where the player needs to survive and dodge incoming obstables, I could see the inspiration took from cluster truck with how the survivability works. I'll get more into it.
Gameplay:
So the gameplay at first was particularly interesting as there is 3 lanes and 3 cars, one on each one and you need to dodge each incoming obstacle until the game reaches the end of the road to a finish line, for each level you pass, the difficulty raises, which for me, your average PC gamer about 10 deaths on the first few levels as I was getting used to playing it, then about 8 - 15 deaths throughout the middle of the game and then the difficulty tends to spike a bit on the winter biome levels where my death counter was reaching 30 - 90 deaths. - Now this was mainly because of the cars, i'd say about 70% of the time the jumps and leaps I had to make to dodge the next incoming obstacle was not possible because since the cars vary speed at random, you can get the odd car miles ahead or behind the other ones which can make the game severely difficult and a bit too rng based, not trying to make the game look bad and it is still passable, don't get me wrong, I feel like there should be limits to how far a car can be ahead of the one behind and vice versa to stop the cars from running off in the distance. Despite the rng at times, the game is rather fun and definitely kept me playing it until I beat it which took me a length of 2 hours to do which is decent enough for me, The game can be longer if I took my time to go back and beat each level under 5 deaths so I can do the challenge to obtain the stars, The rng made me think twice about that haha, but its a nice effect to have a secondary goal to the game. I like the variety of obstacles in the game, some parts makes you really think on how to pathfind your route to success especially in the winter biome. As for FPS, i'm running a high end PC, The camera felt smooth but it felt like the environment around me was a little be stuttery, I think its the changing of speeds with the cars that cause it.
Visuals:
The visuals in this game were varied, The menu art, design art for buttons and logo etc were very nicely designed, fit the game and looked very eyecatchy alongside the text font used for tips etc. The 3D models were nice in some areas whereas a few others were a bit rough in difference of quality, most of these such models were background objects that are just there for detail so maybe the company were trying to save polys here to give advantage towards FPS but yeah. Graphics really depends on the player, i personally don't care too much about graphics, they look appealling enough to look nice to me at least. The particle effects for snowflakes were really nice on the winter levels athough I took notice to that they only appear for the player after the first few obstacles. For level lighting, they were nice but I did get a bug on the level with trees and lights but the lights didn't spawn after a death causing the whole level to be very dark... until i died again of course.
Controls:
So the game is very simply functioned, using the mouse to move the camera and WASD keys to move, other than that, space to jump and shift to sprint, The controls are nice and easy to get the hang of, as for the responsiveness on the game for each input, the movement and camera was good, the jumping took me personally sometime to get used to and even more time was took for me to get used to the sprinting responsiveness. From how it felt to me, the jump and sprint began slow and increased its speed overtime making the car jumping a bit harder to land, now you can take this in two ways depending on what type of gamer you are, bad - because it feels unrealistic and irregular or good - as it makes the game a bit more challenging. As a casual/hardcore gamer and was in the middle for this scenerio but It didn't annoy me too much.
Music:
The music and soundtrack in this game was really nice for a "first" indie game from this company, felt that the songs were pretty interesting and had some creative thought put into it. The soundtrack is also fitting for each biome you are in which is beneficial, country music for the country roads stage, desert sounding music for the desert stage and so on, I also like how the songs get a beat to them when you passed the 50% mark of the level it seems which was a nice effect. My only disadvantage for the music is how it can get a bit repetitive, this is more frequent on the harder levels but after 50 or so deaths on one level the music can get a bit on your nerves, there is only a mute sounds button in the settings/options menu which was a little bit cheap, I'd prefer a slider for the music, and another slider/stereo button for additional sounds like the jump and death effect.
Final Review:
The game despite its few old bugs and challenging capabilities, it kept me playing throughout the whole thing for 2 hours which was longer than I thought for 15 levels and I enjoyed myself, I think it was worth the price and I hope to see more.
Additional bugs:
Major bug - Once you quit game, it gets stuck as a background process which I can't closer so I can't play the game again until I restart my PC.
Minor bug - Player can jump and stand on top of the fallen/broken streetlamps which furthermore be then used to jump on the powerline/wires whatever you call them.
Minor bug - Sometimes player can have awkward collisions with the car and/or obstacles causing a small forced push in any direction, can also feel like the player collider model is getting squashed from multiple collisions.
Found nothing gamebreaking which is good but those were a few occurances i encountered.
Thanks for reading my review!
