Maiden & Spell is a one-on-one magical girl aerial projectile battler, featuring a colorful cast of ladies fighting with fantastic spells.
Battling with magic is simple! Fire your spells, hit your opponent, and don't get hit yourself! Each maiden is color-coded and has a set of abilities unique to them, activated at a press of a button. There aren't any complicated combos or intricate inputs or grabs or melee attacks or block buttons! Just a 3-pixels-wide hitbox, a lot of shiny bullets, and your own dodging skills.
You can fight against a friend in Versus Mode, or test your skill against a series of opponents and bullet hell boss attacks in Story Mode.
An abyss on the edge of the map, said to be the most dangerous dungeon in the world... The Great Circle. A group of young adventurers travel down into its depths in search of a powerful treasure.
Awaiting them are cute monsters, nonsensical architecture, and an ancient city once known as The Kingdom of Stars....

Pretty fun game, Story mode has decent challenge, although bots in pvp are too easy even on v.hard. I wish there was more to this game like a super system that let you temporarily go into there super forms they got in the Story mode, this game has a lot of potential and I hope one day we'll be able to do some cool stuff, maybe mod support would help too.

The story fights are a decent challenge (for a noob like me, even on normal) and have decent variety.
Cute and pretty. No bugs so far, Story mainly an excuse to set up fights, but comes with cute lore bits,
Playable on kb + m, but much better with a controller. (This is also a fancy way of saying i'm annoyed by the default KB keymap and could not come up with something better. Keybinds are configurable.)
Mostly played with an XBox controller. Worked pretty much perfectly, but still shows PS button icons.
A Cute Bullet Hell Game
It is like a Touhou game, except without the waves of enemies, just the bosses. Overall, a fun way to spend an hour or so here and there.
Gameplay: On most of the campaigns, you fight 6 of the 8 characters acting as bosses. You start each fight simply trying to hit each boss with your own attacks. Do this three times and the boss switches to their "magnus attack" (think spellcards from Touhou). In this phase, the boss's attacks become more intricate and you have to wear down their health bar. Afterwards, they go back to the first phase or do different magnus attack, depending on where you are in the overall fight.
Controls: Default controls are movement with the arrow keys, attack with Z, X, C, V, and focus (move slower, smaller hitbox) by holding shift. You can switch to using the mouse in the Homescreen -> Options -> Input Options. You can also change keybinds there.
Difficulty: The campaign has four difficulties. I played the "Normal" difficulty, the second easiest. As someone who never played a bullet hell game before, it provided a good level of challenge without becoming overwhelming.
PVP: Best 2/3 rounds, in each round you try hitting your opponent four times.
Variety: There are 8 different characters to choose from, each with their own unique abilities and play styles. You can really feel the difference between all of them, so make sure to give them all a try. It feels really fun to learn how each character works and watch yourself get better as you progress through the campaign.
Art: The preview images and video are very representative of what you get.
Extras: There are unlockable artworks and music. There is also a time trial mode where you try beating a boss's magnus attack as fast as possible.

After a dozen hours of rabbit steel some months ago, i finally opened Maiden&Spell after realizing that the steam points items r rlly cute.
Immediately, I realized OMG TOUHOU!!! and then I went with arcanist cute and WAIT THIS IS IF YOU WERE A TOUHOU BOSS!!! THIS IS HOW I ALWAYS IMAGINED DANMAKU WOULD BE LIKE!!
and then a certain fight & im like THIS IS LIKE THE RUMORED REIMARI FIGHT
then... redhood normal, frost hard (gave up) -> normal,
maiden spellbound cute, priestess normal (perfect!)
so, The storytelling..

Even though it's mostly single player, I think this is my favorite experience this decade as someone with a little knowledge of touhou and a little experience in R&S.
The way that YOU are a boss, the way that you can trade blow for blow *and if the boss is lucky* SHE gets her health back midfight by beating your spellcard,
the way that, as you play other maidens, Maiden & Spell _shows you_ how they're meant to be played..

BANGER GAME. A pvp waifu game is something I never knew I wanted. The normal mode wasn't hard though. I beat normal on my first try. It was incredibly fun tho and the entire boss rush took about 30 mins iirc. I'm definitely going to keep playing the other difficulties all the way through with all the various cast and possibly play online versus whenever I'm in the mood. It's such a good game how did I not know about this for so long. I just wish the normal mode was a harder and the game was a bit longer like a 45 minute run would of been nice but considering it's the devs first game it's incredibly polished and well executed.

The solo mode is a fun enough 2-3 hour jaunt that makes for a good bullet hell on its own, probably a good bit longer if you do higher difficulties. Beyond that the multiplayer is just a pretty good time with friends. The game is not very deep, just a nice bullet hell experience you can play solo and with friends for a bit. Worth getting if you can find it on sale, especially if you can find a friend to play it with.
Yeah, this rules. I like it way better than Rabbit & Steel honestly.
Rabbit & Steel is attempting to be a new kind of thing. This is simply perfecting the shmup.
The patterns are intuitive, the music is lovely, the art and writing are charming, and the normal difficulty is calibrated perfectly to me---a being who does not understand that I should not be selecting normal on shmups. It's very forgiving. And there's also plenty of room to scale things up if, unlike me, you are actually good at the genre.
In terms of content, there's again a bit more here than in Rabbit. You have multiple characters to play through, each with a different story, and there's a fair bit of text here compared to Rabbit's more minimalist approach.
A full run will take you about twenty minutes, so if you're looking for a giant singleplayer campaign this is the wrong place. But if you want to git gud you can spend plenty of time doing that.
Also, this developer makes really rad stuff. I hope more people pick this up and support them.
Edit: Got a perfect (on normal) on my second playthrough. There isn't a ton of story variation between the first and second characters, but wow do they play different. Green girl is sustained pressure and a few defensive tools, black is pure burst aggression with pressure tools and a chargeable trap. You end up in a completely different rhythm.
2nd Edit: Red is... interesting. Sniper playstyle in a shmup feels weird, but her ability to force lockdowns and use delayed pellet spam is brain-bending to try and counter. Lowkey this might be a great fighting game if you're into those and don't mind when they take on unconventional forms.
3rd Edit: The game does a good job of presenting the characters to you in order of ease of use. Peach feels atrociously difficult. You can absolutely bullseye someone with your charged attacks if you time and position them exactly right, but the skill ceiling for this is wildly high and they're borderline useless if you can't. Similarly she has no tools to keep people from getting in, and charging her attacks slows her and lets them do exactly that. She has the best defensive panic button in the game, but I'm not sure it actually lets her out of pressure.
A masterful mix of two genres, never did I think a bullet hell would mix well with a fighter but after seeing rabbit & steel mix bullet hell with MMO raids I had to try this. Each and every character's kit is clearly thought out and is seemingly balanced. The single player fills the void of a good bullet hell and like any other fighting game has its quality and scope vastly increased by playing with others.
Fun and challenging, with cute girls. Not many people who play online aside from the few dedicated people who have years of experience.

Maiden & Spell is a bullet hell fighting game by solo developer mino_dev, released in 2020. It’s a novel concept with a clean and impressive visual design to complement its original gameplay and clever writing.
Maiden & Spell re-envisions a classic Dungeons & Dragons adventuring party, and the monsters they encounter, as magical girls. The adventurers are on a journey to the bottom of the dungeon for a treasure, and the monsters are protecting it and the two groups fight it out in flashy bullet hell battles. There are very few bullet hell fighting games out there (the Acceleration of SUGURI games are the only others that I know of) and Maiden & Spell does the gameplay well with extremely readable projectiles and hitboxes.
There are eight characters total - a fighter, wizard, healer, and thief, and on the monster side there is a lich, basilisk, dragon, and some kind of water cat thing? I’m sure they said what she was at one point but I forgot. In a match, two of the magical girls square off in a bounded arena and can move in all directions while firing a variety of different attacks. Generally, they have a basic attack, a wide attack, an offensive special, and a defensive special. These abilities vary dramatically from character to character, so the different characters can play quite differently from each other. The controls are very smooth, and in addition to the different attacks characters can focus which slows them down allowing you to micro their movement through the projects with more precision.
The art style is extremely cute and cartoony, and very colorful. Each character has a unique design and color palette, and the backgrounds to the arenas are rendered as 3D animated environments though they never distract from the battles themselves.
The writing for the game has a very distinctive voice which is clever and humorous and sometimes moving. This isn’t a perfect comparison, but tonally I would compare it to the animated series Adventure Time. The story mode has you play 6 different storylines, each revealing more about the characters, their relationships, and the treasure at the bottom of the dungeon. Each character has a different personality and motivations, and if I had one complaint it’s that I wanted more story, more time with the characters, and to learn more about them and the setting.
Maiden & Spell is 12.99 USD at full price, and playing through all the single player stories took me about 3 hours, but the game doesn’t end there. There are 4 difficulty levels, and the online multiplayer. As a fighting game, the competitive multiplayer aspect is truly where the meat of the game is and extends its life considerably.
I was blown away with how much I enjoyed this game. The look of the game is very simplified, but this is to the advantage of the gameplay as it makes the projectiles unmistakable during a match - something that’s critical to a good bullet hell, and even though the story mode was very short the writing was very enjoyable.
I also want to touch on the game’s multiplayer community. The player base is rather small, with fights being organized over the developer’s Discord community, but every time I checked there was a handful of dedicated players duking it out in a lobby. The game is four years old so you can expect to battle some very serious players, but I found them friendly and welcoming, and very generous with pointers and advice to a newcomer. There is also an active tournament scene, with tournaments taking place twice a month.
When I first looked at the Steam store page for this, I never would have guessed that I’d have a new game in my rotation of favorites, but it has sucked me in. If you have any love in your heart for bullet hell games, or if you like the cute aesthetic, I recommend checking it out. If you do pick it up, maybe I’ll see you in the lobby.

Good anime pvp-pve bullet heaven/hell.
Feels like touhou but unique and interesting. please play it.
Story is good and challenging with lots of difficulty options. I suck at the pvp but some people are really really good at it and the competitive scene is still alive to this day. If you like bullet hells this is a must have.
