This is absolutely a phone game port (you literally just press left or right) but it's still a blast.
Weirdly enjoyable, better than the sum of its parts.
good casual game.
Diggerman is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. The game is an ultra simple thematic ripoff of games like Steamworld Dig, but much worse quality, and with much shallower gameplay (and shallow is the last thing you want, this is a mining game!! geddit???). You've got a 2D side view mine and you must dig as deep as you go before your battery runs out. You can only dig 45 degrees down left or right, so you just tap left and right on your iPhone screen and try plot a course that will dig through batteries and money (I don't know why the developers think people bury batteries and money underground). Money buys you upgrades, and there's a shallow story mode so you can "progress" though the game, not that you would want to, because it's garbage. Like, this is much worse than Steamworld Dig, costs around the same, and I didn't even like Steamworld Dig.
From a technical perspective, as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the mobile app unplayable for differently-abled gamers.
Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the mobile app was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The mobile app is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone.
These technical defects push this mobile app below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
Diggerman didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the mobile app, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the mobile app didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is m_achievements[0], but only around 35 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the mobile app. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the mobile app.
The poor quality of this mobile app is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 5 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality mobile app is to be expected.
Once more we see greedy mobile devs trying to scam PC gamers. On Steam, this is $5 USD, on app stores, it's free. Mobile devs must learn PC gamers are not here to be gouged, and can't be expected to pay FIVE BUCKS FOR A FREE MOBILE APP just because it's been lazily dumped on Steam. This is unacceptable disrespect for PC gamers. Because this can be played free elsewhere, and because of the other defects, it's impossible to recommend. Who do they think we are?
I'd be lying if I said that this game doesn't feel like an awkward and cheap mobile port, but I'd also be lying if I said it isn't fun.
It has some interesting mechanics and will keep you well-entertained for 30-60 minutes. If that's enough for you, go for it.
fun, easy, simple
Synopsis: fun and worth playing, but don't feel you need to complete it.
The good: The gameplay is straightforward: choose left or right to dig down, avoiding pitfalls that will kill or slow you. Get as far as you can, earn a few coins, die. Repeat. The coins allow you to unlock new characters and level up existing ones so that you can progress further. This is pretty fun and addictive.
The bad: After sometime you sort of hit a wall and a long grind is required to proceed. This is where it becomes not so fun and ultimately not worth playing. As with many games these days, you unlock lots of new stuff at the beginning but it slows down over time. At some point, even the new stuff isn't that new, and you're grinding for the sake of eventually unlocking the end content, which is pretty limited.
All in all, worth playing for a few hours, but don't feel like you need to unlock everything.
Very creative take on the old Boulderdash game dynamic. You can only move left or right and you need to be fast because your 'diggerman' has limited batteries. Grab it if it's discounted.
I love it, bought it last week for 49 cents, i couldn't be happier. I love going for achievements and high scores and this game is simple yet very fun and addicting. I highly recommend it!
Get the juice and let loose!
More fun than it looks (it has dinosaurs). Don't think, just dig.
Diggerman is truly a one of a kind game, The story is... compelling, the art style is simple and relates the game. The Thrill of digging really comes out when I play this game. I, like many others, did not know they needed this game in there life; but now, I realize the true glory of Diggerman. Truly a genius story certainly not told before, and one that you want to understand. The game offers a strong variety of game-play styles which really sets it apart from other games. In my humble opinion, the game should be at least 6.99 instead of the 4.99 it is now. Diggerman is also the top game for fixing friendships, Because of its simple game-play aspects, many can enjoy taking turns play whilst chatting or having tea. I've never made a better purchase in my life. This game can inspire generations or young and old to make wonderful games just like this one. I hope thou have a wondrous rest of your days.
Simple but fun game.
I am only a little way into it, but the core game play is about digging. Unlike previous digging games I have player however, the only options are down to the left one, or down to the right one, so you are always descending, no lateral movement.
This give the game a nice pace, it seems to me, especially as you need to be concerned with boulders rolling down the slope after you,
There are a variety of terrain type that slow you down, coins you can collect for upgrades, treasure chests and new employees, and the core currency, batteries, as when you run out of power, you die.
Upgrades are abstract, as near as I can tell it is mostly about improving your battery. No bombs, or better picks, or anything like that.
When you get a new employee, it is still only one of them digging down, as well. So far it doesn't feel like any of them play any differently, they simply have a slightly better starting battery.
The treasure chests can give you a few coins, or bizarrely, tourist attractions for your house, which can earn you a few coins between rounds. I have dinosaur bones, which seems in keeping with the digger flavor, but the other is a basketball hoop. Go figger.
And that seems about all of it, dig down left or down right, collect coins, but better batteries, rinse and repeat. About what I expect from a digger style game.
One odd bug, it defaults to French. You have to find the place to change the language, which is no biggie, but apparently you have to do it again, every time you play, at least I have had to. Not a deal breaker, but odd, usually games remember my language choice.
Anyway, silly fun, and easy thumbs up.
ADDENDUM: 8.4 hours start to finish, and I did finish it! Sweet. I imagine it would be quicker for most, I am not great at these kinds of games, but I was able to win, so it wasn't that hard. Not only that, the game play is such that I might go back and try to get the rest of the achievements, not something I usually worry about.
Simple and fun. There's a hint of time management (a mechanism I abhor), but it isn't sufficient to run the fun. I wish there was a simple help screen telling you what things do - it took me forever to realize that unlocking characters lowered the price of using checkpoints. I beat the game in 4 hours, but had I known what basic things do, I would've done it in half the time.
There's definitely a NES vibe to the gameplay (with SNES graphics), and for a budget indie title, it's enjoyable enough.
Would dig again to save waifu
Simple two keys, down scrolling digging game.
Test of Speed, Keen eyes, Key pressings and Patience.
May cause irritation to the eyes, with the excessive exploding stuttering and screen shaking,
while digging your way downwards.
Grind of repeat playthrus just to collect 10 of each collectibles for achievements.
Much patience and luck needed.
Playable.
It's a remake of the 1980's game Boulder Dash but more more challenging. LOVE IT!

An ingenious ad delivery disservice, disguised as a game. There are no ads on Steam, so this is a game about nothing featuring nothing (someone said this exact thing about Bit Heroes, but that game is more of "a game about opening your wallet, featuring nothing")
Slightly unstable at the moment, but a fun game. I would recommend Timberman Vs over this though because it's just a more fun game.
Fun game, but I would've liked to have an ending like the comic in the beginning. Also when you continue after you've saved your girl it says checkpoint when digging, but it doesn't actually act as a checkpoint. For what it is and the price I enjoyed it and somehow didn't get boring even after 9 hours. But would be nice to see some updates in the future, maybe just something as simple as more trophies, just to have it being worth going back to.
Dope game!
