Its a good game, but the levels ARE VERY QUICK, didnt like this
This STG adds a unique twist to the bullet hell / danmaku formula. Excellent control and good graphics.
I saw some reviews bashing that they changed the game to include a roll button. This turned me off for a bit despite never playing any Psyvariar. On sale I finally decided what the heck, and boy am I glad I didn't listen to those reviews. That said I can understand if you're an OG player and built up that skill that would be frustrating. But IMO, it would be a PITA to play like that.
Review:
Gameplay 9/10 - Almost perfect, it is a simple concept done well.
Graphics 10/10 - I love em and the bullet patterns are beautiful and mesmerizing.
Performace:10/10 for me. Could be slowdown on older specs, untested.
Music 6/10 - Meh, not bad but serviceable just fine.
Garbage port. The game does not limit the fps to 60 on higher resolution monitors. If you have a monitor set to 144hz, the game will play at over twice the normal speed. I can limit the fps to 60 in the nvidia control panel but I really should not have to do that just to play the game properly.
I'm not a devotee of the series or the genre, so this was a sale pickup.
I am a big supporter of older games being on Steam and this seems to be a good presentation; three ways to play, with their own music, and you can flip and turn the screen around too.
The grazing past enemy fire thing is fun and there are times when it's just mental and you need a bomb or you are going to take damage.
In the way of these things, the runs are short, you can get through to the end credits in a few minutes. But it's about path taken, options used and how well you did.
If these aren't your thing or you're not used to older games, then this might be tough to get your head around, just in terms of how it works, what information there is on the screen and how you're going to play it.
The controls however, are mercifully simple, so it really is just down to those factors and your decision to graze, evade or nuke the threats and how much of the shoulder button/trigger you can get away with before you need to let it go to move.
For non-devotees, four plus years on, this is a good sale pickup, but I'd say full price might feel like a poor investment. If you're that keen that the full price makes sense, you likely already have it, and/or don't need my review :)
this game is awesome! I was buzzing in a minute... so, I paid for this
Compatible in TATE mode with CRTs monitors, any framerate. Buuuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Simple but supercrisp visuals.
Sublime soundtrack.
Addictive bullet-grinding that feels very rewarding even after hours of playing.
Psyvariar Delta is a fantastic package that contains updated HD ports of the Success arcade classics Psyvariar: Medium Unit, Psyvariar: Revision, and Psyvariar Delta, a brand new arrange mode that puts many M2 ShotTrigger arrange modes to shame.
In addition to these three modes, you can select three different soundtracks ( from Medium Unit, Revision, and Delta), three different ships with varying playstyles ( Axion-mu, Axion-R, and Cybattler). The game also contains a practice mode for every single stage, sound and screen adjustments, a number of extra gadgets that can be adjusted to different corners of the screen, and additional options that show your player graze radius, along with shot/enemy radius. These gadgets are extremely helpful when learning the game, as they can help you manage boss timers and health, monitor your experience gauge, and show the amount of time left with your invincibility chain, and become even more helpful as your experience with the game grows and you focus on harder achievements within the game. The game also supports button reassignments to your gamepad or keyboard of choice.
Getting into the game can be a bit strange compared to most other shooting games. Your main goal is to move closely towards bullets to accumulate buzz (which is similar to grazing in Raiden Fighters/Touhou), which raises your experience gauge. If you accumulate enough experience, your ship will level up and you will be temporarily be invincible for the next 1.2 seconds. At certain level intervals, your ship will change form and you’ll be able to gain an additional bomb. These bombs can be used either to give your temporary invincibility (short) or to destroy all enemies and bullets on screen (long). Your main goal with these mechanics is to determine which stages will give you a lot of level ups, which enemies should be kept alive, and which enemies should be destroyed.
The overall experience, especially with Psyvariar Revision and Delta is pretty challenging, especially if you are looking to clear the 4th challenge stage (X-D) on 1 credit, since you only have 3 lives/no extends. There is a definite learning curve to understanding how to manage your invisible time chain and understanding what aspects of your route can be consistent while still providing enough level ups to reach your goal. To help with this, the game provides a button that automatically rolls your ship, and allows you to more easily gain additional buzz from nearby bullets and reduces the hitbox of your ship. The bullet patterns are dense, but allow for a lot of experimentation to help the player gain additional buzz,. This aspect along with the extremely smooth ship movement and game mechanic feedback was one of the main reasons I continued to play the game for the X-D clear.
My only minor complaints are no support for 4:3/16:10 monitors, no replay saving, an overall leaderboard for all platforms (leaderboards are segregated by PC/PS4/Switch), and occasional micro stutters when playing in windowed mode. Other than that, this is probably the best City Connection port out there, one of the best shooting game ports on Steam, and it worth purchasing even at the base $30 MSRP. If you enjoy shooting games with grazing mechanics, or a bullet hell with a slightly unorthodox gameplay system, you will find that Psyvariar Delta provides the player with an extremely rewarding and deep experience.
Absolutely love this. Old PS2 fav of mine, so happy to relive it.
Only complaint is soundtrack dlc (bought) does not include medium unit or revision, but thas alrite
PLS PSYVARIAR 2 REMAKE
This game needs to be played with the Buzz System (graze system) in mind to get the most out of it. It has Score Attack mode for the online leaderboard.
I thought Replay Mode+ is the game saving replay, but sadly no, it's another mode like stage select for scoring. Related to that, the game doesn't save replay so you have to record while playing.
One issue I had is the game didn't recognize my gamepad if Steam controller config is on, so I had to turn off the setting in Steam properties and it worked fine.
Very nice follow up to Psyvariar 2. The gameplay is great; the buzz system is quite fun. Graphics are sleek despite enemy ships being quite simple looking. The boss are huge. The music is awesome and the general atmosphere of the game is enticing. I'm looking foward the arcade version that will be released in 2020...
The Soundtracks was great. But the gameplay is very short and the price is very expensive.
Unplayable with my arcade stick. Reverses y-axis.
Medium Unit and Revision are both not half as cool as Psyvariar 2 (not included in this collection), and the roll button negates a fun and cool physical element of the arcade controls, as well as significantly diminishing the challenge since you can press the button to roll in place (without having to move side to side as you would in the arcade, with the risk of colliding with bullets). The game's leaderboards and achievements do not recognize those who choose to play the game as designed, that is, without the stupid roll button, and it is not even possible to properly unbind the key within the game.
I'd recommend passing on this and playing either the Dreamcast or NAOMI version of Psyvariar 2 instead.
It is a challenging shooter game with great music!
Gluon: I'm gonna tear your ship apart to sub-atomic level
Me: Kiss my BUZZ
Seriously, now, it's a solid shmup. Get it.
I'd played this game briefly before but dismissed it as another generic shooter, after seeing so many people talk about how amazingly good a game it was I decided I had to try it even if the price seemed high. Once you stop trying to play it like any other shooter and the bullet buzzing "clicks" it's pure distilled fun and can be as easy or challenging as you want to make it for yourself from one second to the next. I can't think of another game that has such a simple base mechanic so perfectly implemented that I know I'll be coming back to it for a very long time. The price might look a bit high for what's in the trailer but it is absolutely 100% worth every penny.
This looks like a pretty good port so far, with most of the features you would expect after playing the arcade and PS2 versions, like easy rolling, HUD customization and practice modes.
Newcomers should expect a dynamic shmup with a fresh grazing mechanic, and nice feeling of exploration and progress from unlocking stage routes. (there are 15 stages or so)
The OST and its options are very good, like you would expect in a shmup. My favorite music set is still Revision over all others, it has a strong 1990s feel while the Delta option is more modernized.
If anything some more options for aspect ratios like 16:10 and 4:3 would be nice.
Many years ago I briefly played Psyvariar 2 on the Dreamcast and didn’t particularly care for it. In hindsight I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and at the time I had minimal experience playing shmups. Psyvariar Delta was released and I was interested in revisiting the series. Today is launch day and there aren’t many reviews, so I thought I’d offer my initial thoughts and observations.
Psyvariar Delta contains three games: Medium Unit, Revision, and Delta. I’ve only played Delta so I’m unable to describe all of the differences between the three games. There are three ships and all of them are available in each game. This is a pretty cool idea because it allows players to select ships that weren't originally in a given game. It’s also possible to select any of the soundtracks. The primary feature that defines Psyvariar is the buzz/level up system.
Buzzing (more commonly referred to as grazing) is intentionally flying close to enemy projectiles in order to gain experience. The player ship will level up after a sufficient amount of experience has been gained. It's worth mention that you seem to gain experience at a faster rate while holding the button that lowers the ship's movespeed. Leveling up gives you a brief moment of invincibility and also upgrades your ship’s firepower if you do it enough. The momentary invincibility can be used to quickly and safely buzz bullets that might not have otherwise been possible to get to without dying. Based off my limited time with the game so far, buzzing is perhaps even more important than destroying enemies with your own weapons. There are branching stages and leveling up enough times is the key to gaining access to the more difficult stages.
Overall the package is quite good and it has many of the bells and whistles I hope to see in a shmup release. There are leaderboards, useful display options, and a detailed practice mode. I've only been using the soundtrack from Delta but I like it so much that I plan to buy the OST. Unfortunately there are a couple things CITY CONNECTION could have done better. Bizarrely, there doesn’t seem to be any way to exit the game while using a gamepad. Instead the player must press escape on the keyboard. One would think that adding an “exit” button to the menu would be easy so this feels particularly lazy. Second, the game has no way to internally limit the fps. The game logic is tied to the framerate so if you have a 144hz monitor the game will run at more than twice the appropriate speed. The easy solution is to set the monitor to 60hz, but it’s annoying to swap it back and forth for every play session. Although I haven’t tried it yet, I would expect an external frame limiter would also solve this problem. Other than those issues, Psyvariar Delta is a lot of fun. I’d definitely recommend it to any shmup player that doesn’t dislike grazing.
February 1st, 2019 edit: An option has been added to the bootup menu that has monitor options. The game now works properly without having to change my monitor's refresh rate.
February 4th, 2019 edit: An exit button was added. You no longer need to press "ESC" to exit the game.
November 26th, 2019 - Shmup of the year.
Rolling and buzzing is just as fun as it was 15+ years ago.
