FIN AAAAHHHHHHHHHHH WAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ILL GET YOU OUTTA THERE
After some years, I still remember my emotions I got playing Steam Prison~ Such great idea of plot, and amazing characters got me involved in story... Still it's one of my favourite games~
please let fin be happy for once
Top favorite due to stories and characters
Took me ages to finish this one, not because I didnt like its story but because it was boring as hell for multiple reasons. Steam Prison's world is a completely original one with a plethora of new terminology, settings, social structures and laws that would make it look like a good time to read and explore through it at first glance. Very similar in its archetypal incipit to more classic Otomate VNs, Steam Prison copies its big sisters to a T while addressing none of their issues and having much bigger flaws.
For one, the protagonist, which is often depicted as being great in combat and a swordsmanship master, level-headed and capable of rational decisions, is very poorly written and 90% of the time falls into pure idiocy with fallacious takes and a naivetee that I would expect of a kid, not someone who just got their badge to go hunt down criminals in the middle of the most wealthy country around.
Goes without saying that if the person one is expected to play as becomes such a walking snore, the rest of the game will become less enjoyable. Adding to it, its the visual aspect of the novel.
While backgrounds are pretty nice, costume design and uniform choices are spot-on and incredibly faithful to their core concept (and I can see how they might fit just as well as their original counterpart irl), character faces, proportions and eyes are just plain weird. CGs feel like they had been touched by some amateur with no sense of direction nor care for basic anatomy. There's nothing that would take me out of the story more than seeing two people kissing and their faces look like they melt into one another. The artist surely had major problems with side glances and faces turned away slightly, because every time that happens it feels like I'm looking at a fanfic on deviantart.
The basic structure of the novel is simple: after an introductory chapter and a major twist, there are several paths oepning up for the player. I appreciated the fact that there would be four paths with slightly different plot points and visible changes to the protagonist's attire and subsequent way of handling things for different LIs who would take advantage of her abilities. I also appreciated that the game didnt linger on too much over meaningless or otherwise pointless banter to waste my time. There were filler scenes, sure, but none felt like they had overstayed their welcome.
The characters and situations that served as worldbuilding were brief and sparse so nothing felt forced or dropped onto the player out of nowhere like many other VNs with a custom lore tend to do. Music was decent, it did what it was supposed to do though there was nothing special about it.
LIs are a mixed bag. For one, I wasnt expecting a yandere among them, the novelty was surprisingly pleasant though pretty bog-standard and short lived. Yune and Ulrik (tormented young boy and lighter, cuter tsundere) were definitely the ones I enjoyed the most because both presented somewhat of a callback to more famous VNs which I had read already and it felt closer to home, a sense of normalcy and genuine wonder in both. Eltcreed... eh. I know the archetype is pretty popular but not my cup of tea in any novel. It felt kinda pointless at times with the amount of filler it covered, definitely the most boring of the lot. The other two didnt make me feel like I was playing nearly as much and went by faster, though Adage had its moments.
Important note, I havent played Finn's route, the fact that there is a paid single route with THAT pricetag is ridiculous. No way in hell I'd pay such a stupid price for a single route especially because it is non determinant.
As a fantasy novel, Steam Prison is okayish. If I could give it a neutral score (akin to a 5 out of 10) I would, but since there is no such thing and the visuals, protagonist, story beats and (some) LIs were subpar I will go with negative. I didnt feel satisfied playing it, though it did make me chuckle a few times.
Most of the routes were just meh
Eltcreed Valentine seemed way to old and if dilfs aren't your cup of tea this really isn't gonna amaze you much.
Ines Heinrich Heine was boring as all get out.
Yune Sekiei was a huge let down
Adage's endings were awful.
Ulrik Ferrie was the only good one. I did enjoy his a lot. He's best boy.
I personally can't say there is enough here for me to recommend it but I do have a very specific taste in otome games so I do admit it might be a me thing. The art, voice acting, music and designs were all lovely though so that was nice. The main heroine wasn't really that great, even by otome standards. So at least for me, it wasn't like there wasn't anything good about this game but definitely not enough for me to recommend it. And if I knew this a head of time, I would've not got it. It was a bit of a let down. That said now that I do own it, I would play Ulrik's route and Yune's again. Since they were nice. The ladder wasn't great but not bad.
