Lets keep it simple: Just don’t bother.
Yes, Fenimore Fillmore: 3 Skulls of the Toltecs is a game from the 90s and therefore entitled to some quirks and problems, but from my perspective the issues go far beyond that.
I will share a private anecdote here: I bought this game in the late 90s for the first time. Having played a lot of point-and-click games, especially Monkey Island 1 & 2, Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2 and a lot of other different things from Lucas Art, I was excited. However, I did not get very far and then stopped playing altogether. It became one of those games never finished, but I always had the feeling, that in this case I just did not but in the afford or gave up to soon… after coming back over 20 years later, having played a lot more games like this in the meanwhile I have to say: I believe it’s the games fault. I cannot remember another point-and-click-adventure that in my eyes does not really tell you what it wants from you. While some puzzles are clear and “logical”, most of the time I personally would say the game is guesswork. This is especially frustrating because for some items you need to pick the right action (for example, move instead of use) which is fine IF you would be told that you are on the right track but have to try something a little bit different… but you are not. The hints in the game are practically non-existent. (One can see this in the fact that many people believe they have a bug since they cannot travel to the forest on the map. In fact, you have to look at an empty whisky bottle first to find the “exact” location there… this is one of the most memorable failures to instruct your players and frustrated them beyond what is enjoyable)
Additionally, the game is tedious with the moving and arriving animations all the time as well as some dialogue parts repeating several times – especially the moving part feels like the run time was padded with it.
Lastly, Fenimore Fillmore is neither a sympathetic nor interesting protagonist. While adventure heroes often are awkward, clumsy and maybe a little foolish, Fenimore is what some characters in the game call him: “milk toast” and stupid.
The comic style is nice but the attempted humor by being like a Saturday-morning cartoon at some points did not work for me.
All in all, there are lot more interesting games of this genre out there.
one of the first games I ever played..
Cheesy, silly, but nostalgic, since i played it like 20 years ago and never got to finish it until now. I enjoyed it, it gave me a few hours of good fun.
Played this as a kid when it first came out in 1996. I remember enjoying it and feeling satisfied with solving the puzzles. Now playing it again is difficult since I don't have the patience and time anymore for solving difficult puzzles. This game is definitely more suitable for kids, then adults. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3080162012 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3038328969
More of all it's an "Ok" game for a point and click taking in consideration this was release originally in 1996.
Some points to make:
-I had to change and try all the configuration of the game in the 1st second I started because the character advanced SUPER slow, never had see this issue before in other old game. After that was playable, if not I was about to quit the game.
-Moving from one point to another it's slow, so remember it's an old game and have patience.
-It had stereotypes/racist jokes (especially the Chinese character) bear in mind this before playing.
-The puzzles are not that complicated most of the time. Others are out of nowhere, like the wind one. Lots of "pay atention of dialogs because you will need this later and the character wont repeat it". As an avid point and click gamer I'm used, plus luckly I got to play this all together without taking long breaks.
-I encounter one issue, in the jail the deputty talkes over your own convo and makes the subtitles and voice on the dub not show, only the deputty one so, no luck to know what they reply since its a dialod of one time only.
-The ending was meh... What I would expect from a traditional wild west story.
More of all. After 5 hours, 100% achievement, I approve this game as an old classic!
If you're into these types of games of point and click, then sure, you'll love it. Plot is fun, characters are wacky and weird, puzzles are hard to solve sometimes... I totally recommend it yeah.
The game looks nice enough, the performance is solid, controls are fine and the voice acting pretty decent but I'd recommend for die hard point and click fans only.
The game can be quite difficult for a few reasons
- There is no hot-spot reveal tool.
- Rather than there being a straight forward context sensitive interact action there is a verb table instead. This means there are quite a lot more permutations to try (note the game favors the move verb quite a lot when it doesn't make sense.)
- There is no clear goals given.
- Characters will mention things once and never remind you. It could be several hours of game-play between hearing the clue and needing to use it.
- One or more timing puzzles.
- There is no going back in the dialog tree after choosing an option and even some times the dialog sometimes exits entirely after choosing an option. Sometimes used dialog options would be removed and other times they would not. Even worse I'm fairly certain that certain dialog options were prematurely removed after use but then magically re-introduced back some time later in the game. So you can get momentarily stuck. So really you have to interact with the characters many times to explore all of the dialog tree. The solution to the puzzle is often hidden deep down in the dialog tree.
- Sometimes certain puzzles or items would appear to have dependencies on completing other unrelated puzzles or at least there was no connection as far as I could understand. So you can end up wasting a lot of time on something that you have no chance at until you progress in the game and even then there is no indication that anything has changed. So you just have to keep randomly rechecking all areas to see if anything has changed.
Finally I encountered a major bug in the final room of the game where my character disappeared entirely after trying to interact with something and I was unable to continue. I had to restart from the auto-save.
Game of my childhood, that I could never beat because of the bug at the cemetary. After 25 years I finnaly finished. Remaster itself is pretty bad, just a filter. But the game itself is also bad, but back then we didn't know better
Not a bad effort but i'd expect more from a remaster with regards to the interface at least. The interface should become more modern and drop the verbs imho, also the A,B,C... options in the dialogues was a bad design choice in the original game. Voice acting is bad, but ok this is expensive for indie teams to tackle, understood.
- It's also really frustrating for me when i cannot save when i want, game uses only autosaves.
- Had a bug when travelling with the donkey where the main char disappeared after hopping off and i had to use a previous load.
- But the worst for me was realizing after more than 5 hours of playing and good progress that I hadn't taken any loan credit from the bank and the dialogue was not available anymore, thus breaking the game. I had to quit, maybe i try again some time, but not sure.
Like a Western Monkey island. Puzzles range from easy to I need a guide.
Enjoyed playing this one from my childhood. Works just as I remembered.
Absolutely Loved it!
-the animation is amazing
-voice acting is damn perfect
-puzzles are hard at times which is the way i like it
---the only downside:
-could be longer (but I would think that no matter how long)
all in all it's like a western monkey island
9/10
After i've finished the second of Fenimore adventures, i wanted to take back the very older first one, that i abandoned many time ago in its first release, now in this new remastered version it gains new shining light and value revealing to be a really solid game.
Now that i finally was able to complete it i have to say i am amazed and speechless from how good the puzzles were, i never expected this but this first one is even better than the second, altough i was stuck for few days in some nasty puzzles, after solving them i can say that altough the average level here is set on Hard, nothing is impossible or too much illogic, all has its own sense and works like a charm.
I feel to recommend this game mainly to old school expert gamers, but i suggest also to new adventurers to give it a try, they could discover one of the best adventures they would have ever played, for me it was like so.
Only complain is the presence of few technical failures here and there and the lack of some more modern gameplay interfaces, for example, in some points when you click to talk or interact with another character/item Fenimore starts a looong walking making a looong circle to reach him/it while he could have shortened the path, but the script of the game forces him to do so, this slows down a lot the gameplay and is a bit frustrating, without them this could have been an A+ but it's still a solid A.
My Final Score is
84% /100
Within minutes I could tell "heck no". Voice acting was just bad, the sounds are not mastered well, some subtitles give you a split second to read them. Granted its a 90's game remastered but so was Day of the Tentacle and that game holds up. The final nail in the coffin was the volume slider does nothing. Remastered my foot.
This was one of first adventures I played at the time of release in 1996 and I have good memories of it. There were some serious problems with distribution back then and today the English only copies are very rare collector items and extremely expensive (I saw copies offered for thousands dollars). So it's good that it is available again for affordable price as a digital copy.
The remastered version was not released in perfect state with some bugs and missing features but developers do care, already improved lots of things and listen to the players suggestions.
The game is humorous 2D cartoon like adventure set in the Old West era (this is the only game in Fenimore Fillmore series in 2D as sequels have different 3D style). It's in similar style as some classic Lucas Arts games with point and click mouse controls, verbs and items invenory, and Fenimore Fillmore is the funny antihero like Guybrush Threepwood.
The game does not take anything seriously and there are plenty of crazy situations.
The graphics was glorious SVGA at the time of release and it has still been improved in re-release as the developers have access to an original art.
The gameplay is long without the walkthrough and puzzles are mostly logical but relatively hard as there is access to many locations at the same time soon after the start so player can get lost sometimes.
Music is good but there is not much of it, it could surely be better in this regard. On the other hand, English voice acting is great - not only Fenimore, but other characters as well.
I can recommend this game to the fans of "old fashioned" wacky point and click adventures.
I haven't played the original version, but this one is a good remastering version and interesting for this years too.
I love 2D games, and also I like this kind of game, fenimore make me happy is so funny all that he does
This game is quite old, but still works well, the remastered version is also fine, but it could be better if the developers changed the command system to a modern one.
For all the players who like point and click adventures classic or not.
I wanted to play this game since a long time. One of my favorite point-and-click of my childhood, is really funny, so far I haven't find any trouble with savegame or another thing and I am close to finish it.
You can play with the classic graphics, but not all the classic graphics are there, for example the fonts and another things seems to be new, but the new graphics are really well made.
The Czech translation was done by a machine, so it includes ridiculous translations as "Lead Tester" = "Olověný Tester" (olověný means made of metallic lead). Some characters are incorrectly coded (Unicode vs. Win-1250 encoding problem). Nobody obviously bothered to proofread the translated text.
Horrible quality, stay away.
First off, I think the price is ok, but after playing this game I found out you can't save the game.
There are also some serious issue regarding gameplay.
So there is no possibility to skip animations like traveling, conversations etc
really annoying...
On top of that whenever you are in a conversation the game end the conversation if
you ask or tell the wrong line.
So you have to start a new conversation... pff really?
Also i uses a A-B-C-D box with hidden lines you can choos from, not very
neat.
I also had to turn my volume down to 50% , the music, effect and voices are all in one audio
stream which is waaaay too loud!
Allthough it say it is remastrered, it uses the old audio and has limited options to
configure the game.
But the worst one is as i've said no option to save the game, only a ''load'' button in
the menu.
I hate to say it bececause I'm a die hard point & click game fan but labeling a game
Remastered should have standards, If you compare Lucas Art remastered game with
This game it is a world of difference.
I think the creators should have put in more effort in creating a well pollished game
before releasing it on Steam and trying to make money of it with the possibility
that people are going to complain about alot of things.
This was the main point & click of my childhood and man I missed it, I tried to get it before this release and it was almost impossible for several reasons. So I am chuffed to bits that this game is now ready to purchase on steam without any running issues. If you like point & click adventures and don't mind a little cheese then this game is absolutely for you!
