Summary
I tend to review nicer towards Touhou games as the community is far more about passion and tends to be 1 or a few developers. Also, I really don't like writing negative review, but have to be honest. New Super Marisa Land is a significantly better and more complete game.
MarisaLand Legacy starts off as a fun, cute relaxing re-skin of Super Mario 1. Even with all the issues, the game is enjoyable for a while b/c the first half isn't so bad. Cute art, music, style, etc. Also, permanently saving world completes is brilliant! Rather then having some password system, once you complete a word, you can always start at the next one.
Some of the issues:
1) The interface is incomplete. You can't change controls or settings during the game.
2) Multiplayer also incomplete and generally makes the game harder, even with far more lives. E.g. can't change controls per person. If one person has a PS4 controller and other has an xbox controller, the controls are extra wonky. Screen doesn't stretch or move, meaning the slower guy will get you killed. Many jumps just designed for 1 person.
3) The controls are atrocious due to the awkward physics engine. Trying to control or predict Marisas jumps is nearly impossible. Whats worse is some random unintuitive movements, like turning and jumping the opposite direction after sliding on ice MIGHT make you randomly haul ass the opposite direction. Lore-wise, it doesn't make sense that Marisa has so many problems controlling jumps.
4) The awful controls wouldn't matter so much if it weren't for the hard mode levels. This is what really killed the game. The game is just not designed for super obnoxious pixel-perfect trick jumps. Paired with all the randomness, occasional bullet hell, and seemingly RNG physics engine, most hard mode levels are just not fun. They're the kind of levels you'd watch some super gamer god on youtube when bored, but not fun for a typical gamer. The target audience of this game drastically changed as a result.
Suggestions
Any of these would flip my review to a positive one:
1) Make the game $5. It's not a $20 in its current state
2) Finish implementing the interface, for both single player and multiplayer. Especially control configuration for multiplayer needs work.
3) Some levels may need redesign to work on multiplayer. Alternatively, could add different multiplayer levels.
4) Fix the physics engine for the love of god. There's a zillion pre-made physics engine libraries you can download. Just pick one. Most are consistent enough.
5) Remove the hard mode levels. Maybe make them DLC content.
I've play this game a lot with some friends, very recommend.
fuck super mario bros, it's all about marisaland legacy!
in all seriousness, pretty good mario clone and has good music. not sure why the sequel's not up on steam
Good game but there is a problem thoughout that i cant share remote play which causing keeping losing the game...
Is it basically a reskin of Mario Land with touhou sprite?
Yes
Is it challenging?
I would say so
It it a metric @#$% ton of to remote play with 1 or more friends?
Absolutely! Get a friend and prepare to bubble scum though a bunch of the harder parts and die laughing as you still manage to mess it up.
An amazing and fun Touhou themed tribute to the original Super Mario Bros.
Gameplay and levels are fun and enjoyable. Controls and mechanics are nice and simple. The Hard Stages are a little unforgiving, but they're meant to be hard, so I can't really complain about that.
Would love to have another sequel!
A very cute Touhou fangame similar to Mario 1! Not the most substantial game but a pleasant one that will keep you occupied for a couple hours. I hope New Super Marisa Land gets released as well!
A very good 2hu Super Mario Bros. clone, the physics are a little 'old-school momentum floaty' but you get used to them. It should be noted that like old games you can't save and have to tackle all 8 worlds in one shot (pretty easy). There's an unlockable hard mode after beating normal. I do wish there were different unique bosses instead of reusing the same one with different hazard gimmicks, but still a highly enjoyable game overall. Enemy styles are taken from SMB, World, and even Yoshi's Island which was a nice throwback. Highly recommended at sale price even if you have no familiarity with the series.
This is a remake of the 2005 Super Marisa Land. It's a fun game that plays pretty much like the original Super Mario Bros. If you're in to that kind of stuff, give it a shot.
A mario like game, which can be play with friends,AT SAME TIME,ON SAME SCREEN.(controller is required for this feature)
I love this platformer. I hope more people speedrun it. I need more people to compete with. https://www.speedrun.com/MarisaLand_Legacy#Warpless
First thing's first, have you played Super Marisa Land? Have you played New Super Marisa Land?
This one fits squarely between these two entries in terms of quality, better than Super Marisa Land but nowhere near the scope and quality of New Super Marisa Land. There aren't any powerups like in NSML, there isn't a world map, there aren't as many levels, and every single boss in this game is the exact same boss with different hazards depending on the world.
In terms of remaking Super Marisa Land, it does it but may as well be a completely different game. Legacy shares the same 'Head Proportion' mechanic where depending on how many mushrooms (and the type of mushroom you grab) you pick up, you change sizes. Head proportion 2 is basic mini Marisa, 3 is basically young Marisa, 4 is just below regular Marisa and 6 is older Marisa, with the ability to shoot projectiles. 8 is a temporary 'Mega Marisa' powerup that kills anything it touches, similar to the one in New Super Marisa Land except Marisa doesn't become an extremely busty ojousama-looking type, just an older-looking witch. It's an alright system, good but not as good as NSML's powerups.
The game prides itself on allowing four-player couch co-op (or online co-op if you have Parsec and a controller, and a friend with both). This is exactly as you'd expect. That is to say, if you're looking for a new game to lose some friends with by kicking a fuzzball into them or stealing all the powerups like the kleptomaniac bastard you are in order to leave your friends one hit away from death while basking in your 4-head proportion glory, this is the game for you! At least until they smack all the fuzzballs they can find your way, anyway.
If another player dies, they show up in a bubble, a la New Super Mario Bros Wii. Unlike NSMB Wii, you can't pop them out of it - they have to do that themselves. Also, the screen refuses to move forward unless all Marisas are moving forward, meaning if you're on an autoscroller and another player dies, since they spawn in on the bubble from the left side, expect to have to start the level over. Thankfully, this isn't so bad because the levels aren't very long. In fact, if you're familiar with platformers or Marisa Land in general, expect the main game to only take around an hour to two hours to beat!
It hurts to say because I generally really love Twilight Frontier's offerings, but it's hard to recommend this game. If you've played the other Marisa Land games and really want more of the brand, or are fine with giving up on a lot of the positive things that NSML had in order to play with friends, then I guess you might enjoy this. For me, though, I can't justify the price for what you get in return.
Basically Super Mario Bros (+Lost Levels) minus Mario, plus Marisa and Yoshi Coins. Or Rainbow Stars, as they are in this game. It's good, but the jumping mechanics take getting used to.
10/10 would eight head proportion again
I don't understand how this have positive reviews on Steam. Paid users by developer?
I wanted Mario type clone, but this is just disappointing game. Lacking of content.
In normal mode, completed about 6 worlds on this game under a hour. Game have 8 worlds in total. 4 short levels on each world.
False advertisement about local multiplayer. There is none of local multiplayer.
Annoyingly slowly getting speed with sprinting button.
No powerups other than getting her bigger and "invincibility" at random places.
Boss rooms are too easy, no boss variation, only same ball enemy at each world ending. Not even used any Touhou characters. You only use "koopa trooper" type enemy to kill them.
This game should cost 5€ mostly. 14,99€ is too steep for fan game quality like this.
Get official Touhou game with 14,99€ instead https://store.steampowered.com/app/745880/__Hidden_Star_in_Four_Seasons/
It's basically Super Mario Bros, which is what I expected going into it having played New Super Marisa Land like 8 years ago. Unfortunately none of the niceties from that game are present in Legacy. No map, just 32 levels in a row SMB-style. You can count the different enemy types on one hand so by world 6 or so, it becomes a battle of attrition.
You can't save and a game over ends your run, but lives are plentiful enough that the only thing stopping you from beating the game is your own will power. You do eventually unlock a stage select that lets you pick which X-1 to start from.
Marisa herself is very sluggish with poor handling and awful midair control.
It's an ok game on its own but a HUGE step down from New Super Marisa Land. The main game is about an hour from start to finish (then there's a second harder set of levels after that). It's hard to justify the $20 price tag.
This game is seriously awesome! It's similar to SMB1, but with some element differences. The main one being that Marisa gradually grows. Rather than just having a big and small form, Marisa grows another head tall depending on how many mushrooms she has. At four heads, she gets a projectile move, and at 8 heads, she is temporarily large enough to charge through everything, similar to the mega mushroom from the Mario series.
I really love the art style of this game. The pixel art is extremely vibrant, cute, and detailed. The music is fun, upbeat, and matches the mood of every level! This sort of variety in game styles is really why I started to like Touhou. Marisaland Legacy is a fun, unique, and cute take on an age-old classic like SMB1. I would recommend it to anyone!
Really fun ~ if you like platform games, and it's more fun with your friends in local play !
Well, I think this is a good game. Marisa is very cute!
But it's hard to me.
Stuck at level 4-4. And I can't collect all of stars in some levels too.
Very Cute Game And its Touhou Platformer As Mario Style haha This reminds of Another one Similar to it But its Much harder and with Overworld With 7 Worlds I think this one has 8 And last one is Survive Cause You Gain No Powerups and you gotta survive Against Oncoming Bullet faries Haha Juggling Bakas And Throwing Dia chans Aka Hammer bros but she throws Sun flowers at you. I love this Game with its cute chibi Style And when you hit A Tall Stack Mushroom You Gain the Ability to become Invic Nobody can touch for short period of time. The other one silimar to thsi you can Transform into Reimu Tenshi Alice etc But again thats the other this one is great ^^ Its got Good Music Levels etc Overall Good Game I would Recc this To ANyone who Loves Platformers.
Marisa Land Legacy may not beat its predecessor New Super Marisa Land in scope, but it's still the kind of game to make you smile on a bad day. The music is uplifting and cheerful, the graphics colourful, the artwork adorable. There are many secrets to be found (5 hidden stars per stage and a few warpzones) and even a special unlockable to make the game more challenging for another playthrough.
I bet the couch-co-op is amazing, but it'd take a lot of moving of hardware to get it set up, let alone the effort of fetching someone to reluctantly play some weird japanese game with me that they have never heard of.
