Unexpectedly became mesmerized by this one.
The art is amazing. The mechanics are great. The writing is enjoyable. A great find if you are into this genre.
This is probably the most unfair game that I've ever played.
- The combat area is WAY too small. This gives enemies the ability to attack your player almost instantly. On top of that, the developers have included "disasters" in the game which start eating up the dueling area after so many turns. Couple that with area of effect spells and weapons, it gets to a point where you can't move ANYWHERE without taking damage, and probably dying.
- If you actually manage to cross the screen and attack the other player face to face, they can simply opt to push your warrior off of the edge of the screen, killing it instantly.
- Enemy pieces are too hard to kill and have abilities that will ALWAYS counteract EXACTLY what you did in the last round. Also, since you're fighting in a single file line and can't move around other creatures, your opponent can just summon a constant creature blockade in front of him so you can literally never touch him.
Can be tedious but is a good challenge, takes strategic thinking, great sale game
You know the feeling when you have high hopes for a game, only to be let down once you finally play it? Thankfully, *Inkulinati* is not one of those games. I had high expectations—mostly because I’m a sucker for all things tactical and medieval—and the end result more than exceeded them.
The medieval manuscript-style design immediately drew me in. This might be the best tactical game I’ve played in a very long time. The battles are short and sweet, with plenty of depth. They never feel unfair, striking a perfect balance with a rock-paper-scissors mechanic that’s complemented by just enough randomness to keep things interesting. The music, partially written and performed by Hildegard von Blingin (who also appears as an enemy, alongside other tongue-in-cheek rival Inkulinati like *The Master,* clearly modeled after Yoda), is fantastic. It’s somewhat reminiscent of *Warhammer: Dark Omen*’s OST, one of my all-time favorites.
Speaking of influences, it’s impossible not to mention *Monty Python’s Life of Brian,* particularly Terry Gilliam’s animations, which clearly had a significant impact on the game’s presentation and humor.
I do have a few criticisms. First, the game has a somewhat steep learning curve, especially when using a controller (I’ve been playing on my Steam Deck). That said, this issue is mitigated by the excellent controller integration—a real technical feat considering the intricacy of the combat. Adding an “info layer” was a particularly smart move. The inclusion of Hildegard’s Battle Academy, accessible from the menu, also helps by complementing the regular tutorial with enjoyable, puzzle-like mini-battles that teach advanced tricks.
Second, the 2D, platformer-esque arenas can feel a bit cramped at times. I wish the developers had implemented a jump action to clear obstacles and platforms. However, this is a minor issue, and the codex-like aesthetic more than compensates for any such inconveniences.
In summary, if you’re a fan of tactical games or simply appreciate its unique aesthetic, *Inkulinati* is well worth your time. It’s truly a marvel how far the developers have taken a concept born from the amusing doodles of bored monks (did I mention there’s even a boredom mechanic in the game?).
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some bunnies to draw—so I can fart my opponents into oblivion.
So flavoroufull , bellissimo, buonissimo and all the others, sad there isnt multiplayer but there is local 1v1 .
Felt inspired to skulpt miniatures out of the drawings first to attempt are the foxes witch carried my victory untill the final battle.
I'm in love with the art style and humor of this game! the gameplay is relaxed and fun, the idea of the gameplay is original and unusual. I'm really looking forward to new games from this studio!
Great game for the steam deck. The distinct art style is why I bought the game, especially since the Pentiment creator recommended and even said this game's art style is more accurate to that period. It's a unique strategy game that progressively teaches you how to play as well. Overall I found it enjoyable and love the sound effects.
This is a great game with some light RPG elements to it and fantastic hand drawn characters. While I use the word "little" it does not mean it is short but rather there isn't a massive learning curve nor is there a million different cards to learn. Some may call this a 'card' game but it is more akin to a horizontal tower defense game which utilizes cards as selection elements. Overall this is an excellent strategy game and worth the price.
I love medieval marginalia! Makes for a very beautiful game.
Beautiful illustration, real innovative game play and difficult enough to challenge crafty minds.
I love this game! Been playing for a bit, and wow funny tactical combat plus bardcore! It is so great!
A good idea well-executed.
Apparently its the only 2024 released game I played this year. But its still a cool tactical/strategy game, with fun concepts and lots of replayability
Lots of fun, great art and hilarious animations.
It's a little bit funny.
The artwork is what drew me to the game, very original and fun to look at. But once I started playing the game, I enjoyed the unique gameplay and challenges presented. It takes some getting used to but once you figure it out, it's a lot of fun to play.
A cute medieval turn-based strategy game.
Very long tutorial, but it helps to understand all the mechanics. Medieval Worms 9/10
This game has a good amount of depth to its mechanics and level design. It's not the most complex strategy game in the world, but it is complex enough to keep the gameplay fun and interesting. What really stands out though is its visual style and sound design.
you can fart on enemy
when i retire i'm going to play this, slay the spire, and bellatro for the rest of my life
Such a weird little game that is so much fun.
goon rewards
This game really fascinated me and kept me busy for a while. I got it on discount for 9.99 euros and it was absolutely worth. It is charming, challenging and entertaining. Many units, fights, bosses and ways to win (or lose). Plus, there's some history to learn about what Inkulinati were. Recommended.
After 66 hours and closing all achievements I highly recommend this game.
- Suffering medieval style as a chef's kiss
- Interesting battles
- Lots of interesting factions that help to go through the game in a varied way, creating interesting builds
- Very atmospheric music
- Though the tutorial is quite long, but it helped me to understand all the mechanics and work out my tactics
I'm looking forward to the next project from Yaza Games ❤️
I bought this game because I like its medieval art. But I didn't expect the game to be so relaxing yet so engaging. This might just become my go-to game for when I have some time but want something relaxing and soothing! Definitely a recommend!
Clever game with interesting artwork
Inklunati is incredibly fun and unique. The art is fantastic and I enjoy it thoroughly.
I'm bad at this game type...but, I like it anyway
A very fun and creative little turn based strategy game
Beautiful art, yet boring gameplay.
what a trip. no game is like this. check it out
Yea verily this be awesome.
Original and fun, it even writes its own record of battles. Design is top notch and battles develop in difficulty as one progresses. Unfortunately it all begins to pale somewhat quickly However the kids just can't get enough of farting donkeys and are constantly hounding me to play the game when they visit.
Nice, but gets boring fast. I still would recommend to try out for yourself.
7/10
It is sublime game, think about it as a 2D chess game. And it is very funny :)
I really wanted to love this game. I've loved manuscript marginalia since I was a tween. The style and aesthetic of the game is definitely on point. But the gameplay itself is deeply convoluted and un-fun.
I spent over 3 hours just going through the tutorials, and it was an absolute slog. I'm also barely over halfway through those tutorials. I kept going because basically the whole way through I assumed I was "almost done" with the tutorial. (Note; after a certain point I could see that I had many more to go through, but I figured they'd get faster or I'd be able to start the main campaign without completing them. This wasn't the case.)
I noticed that some making similar complaints in the reviews were replied to by devs saying that you can start the main campaign without finishing the tutorials. I have no clue what they're talking about, because as soon as I tried to start a new campaign I was immediately asked to make binding decisions about rules that hadn't yet been introduced three hours into the tutorials.
Not to mention that the roguelike/RNG aspect makes a lot of the actual strategy useless.
There's also a lot of toilet humor. Which I don't hate but got old really fast.
Got farted to death repeatedly by my friend. 10/10 would commit heresy against Bishop-Like Creature and get farted to death again.
Inkulinati is a strategic treat that has some awesome head scratchers that unfortunately has tried
to incorporate rogue-lite replayability into an otherwise great game. Unfortunately it also lacks that final game design care, just a bit of a push, to be propelled into being a great game, especially in the UX aspect. However, I think the quirky art style and the obvious love behind the design really makes it a unique and worthy experience.
The massive unit variety, with each race having wholly unique mechanics that get crazier the further you go on, is of course key to a wide variety of levels. From simple "pray and get a buff at the end of turn" to more complex "create water tiles on the map that you can walk to without losing your action, suffocating enemy and ally non-water units alike", and a lot in-between, there is a lot to play around with here. However, the UX of learning about these is plain horrible (you dont hover over concepts, instead you peruse two lists at once and try to connect the dots), especially on controller. On top of that, with different races having a massive variety of units that can even fly things can get confusing AS THERE IS NO WAY TO PREDICT WHERE AN ENEMY CAN SHOOT WITHOUT COUNTING TILES YOURSELF AND GUESSING LINE OF SIGHT BLOCKERS (and no easy way to even predict movement on controller). As time went on I found myself cringing at times when a new enemy type appeared due to this, but taking a month long break from trying to 100% the game allowed me to enjoy Inkulinati greatly regardless.
Regardless, Inkulinati is a strategic treat because of its wide variety of levels, made possible because of a large set of mechanics. On top of the large variety of units you have actions your Tiny can take that you collect on a run, as well as passive modifiers/powers that are the staple of any rogue-lite, so you have many different ways of tackling these great levels.
Unfortunately, the general campaign that these levels reside in is not so great. You have a boredom mechanic that punishes you for constantly using a unit (instead of a mechanic that would reward you for using seldom-used units), but I learned to live with an love that eventually as it made me discover different playstyles. A level selector with a lot of different forced builds would have achieved the same though. My biggest gripe is that you are expected to beat the same bosses and content multiple times in 6-7+ hour campaigns, with the first couple hours growing uninteresting as you get good at the game. The game is just not great for a rogue-lite campaign structure because every run is so long. Not to mention, there is a disconnect and a bit of an anti-synergy between the great levels and the mediocre campaign design. Since you are meant to protect your largely immobile Tiny, whose HP is carried over from your rogue-lite run, on rare but deeply annoying occasions it is simply impossible to win a fight. Or you forget about a mechanic of a unit, which is very possible since there are so many units and not so great UX, and your Tiny/MC gets oneshot, losing the level even if you were winning the fight. This doesn't always happen since you can hide behind doors, play around with verticality etc, but when it does happen it can be deeply annoying, especially since you are often against an army or a Tiny with triple your HP that can't be pushed / bled / infected / etc. This is balanced by "[[Revival|quills / revival mechanic]]", which you are given a lot of during a run, allowing you to heal back to full, replenish boredom, and thus repeat levels without losing the run. But when you do lose the run, it can often feel like you just got unlucky / managed your quills badly / didnt power through the UX enough instead of being bad at the game. And then you are back to beating beginner levels instead of tackling the so interesting levels later on (though there are some really elegantly designed levels at the start too ofc).
Despite my many gripes with the game, I kept coming back simply because the core design is superb. There is grid-based movement with two ranges (walk and take action or sprint), and a good degree of verticality in levels that form chokepoint ladders or make certain flying units, shooting units, spears etc. an interesting choice. The fact that you can draw both next to you, but also above and below you, as well as a great variety of terrain features, movement ranges, mechanics like headaches that dont allow taking an action after moving, etc. all make for a great strategic experience. Not to mention, you can push units, so if you have a bunch of enemy and ally units lined up next to each other you can basically send units to the other half of the map! There is a lot to get excited about and you constantly discover new tricks you can pull.
A small interesting thing is that the AI is slightly undercooked. Of course you don't want a god-like AI in a game like this that searches through every possibility, so I expect that they defined a bunch of good utility behaviors. It works great most of the time, but it can look really dumb when it pushes your fish unit into water, expecting it to drown but in fact moving it to safety etc. In other words, there are some edge cases that make the AI look dumb especially later on in the game, even though it really is quite fun to play against in most cases.
The art and general quirky nature of the game though breaks the balance and makes Inkulinati wholly worth it. I hope [[Yaza Games]] will make more interesting games like this in the future! In a world where games weren't expected to be replayable to no end, and where rogue-lites weren't so popular, I think Inkulinati would have been able to push forward with its merits instead of incorporating these expectations, sullying an otherwise great meal.
Cool Game, I love it is really unique as a tactical
Hehe, Donkey farts on Dog and they both die in a fire. Top tier game play.
Lets Talk about the Game Inkullnati. The Idea of the game is Fun enough but honestly it's just to slow. I love the idea of how the game gives you a tutorial to understand the beasts and stuff as well as strategies you can employ. But lets talk about this with some of my usual pros and cons
Pros of the game
Has some really good art style
The Sound track is enjoyable enough i could listen to it and not be bored or feel annoyed by it
The Character design is fun and interesting
Mechanics of the game make sense or at least seem to make it work
The fact that they add the detail of you drawing the character when you summon them with your characters hand like it was on a page is interesting.
Now lets deal with the cons
Cons
Slow pace the game is very slow pace and it feels like the mechanics they introduce you to just make it more of a annoyance to play.
How to attack from someone who is below or above you doesn't make sense or isn't explained.
I don't like the religious references that are made in a game now these are minor things but some of it just makes me feel like it's not working for that game. Sometimes these things work if they are not a direct reference for instance Tropico is a great example of a game that can get political but it masks it fairly well with all the other things and the comedy behind it.
There is a story in the background going on but you can't take the time to read it or see what is happening there.
The Final con ill give it is the fact that there is no turn order so you don't know let alone understand which characters go first and which ones go last
Would i recommend this game personally no but that is because i just didn't like it after getting into the game. Watching it makes it seem semi interesting but when you try to play it yourself for me i find it completely boring Uninspiring and not looking forward to anything this company has in the future. For me it's a non recommended game that isn't worth the money you would spend on it.
It's down to you though if you would find this game interesting or not for me i wouldn't buy it unless you really want to try this.
A great turn-based strategy game that can delight and frustrate in equal measure. A great vein of humour runs throughout the game, which is well worth playing.
