It is fun, but the pacing is quite a bit off for my taste. You unlock new tech in waves and when you unlock the largest drillship and finally got all the space you might want, you dont really need it anymore, because the story is finished and all you can do is keep upgrading your ship. However there wont be any challenges at this point and there is nothing to explore really.
So be aware, that you wont spend a lot of time in this game, when you buy it.
it is a good pve game with some building mechanics. overall great game. but minimal playability when story is finished.
Great Concept - lots of action and fun and the devs always have something new up their sleeves. If you don't lose at least 1 drillship to the eruption you're playing it wrong - ha ha ha.
On a side note it is always refreshing when the devs listen to their followers and supporters and implement or try to implement suggestions - keeping players happy is key but don't be fooled - just because a quality of life improvement is added don't think that you won't still slip up and, for example, miss the opportunity to send your ship underground in time because you are being kept busy by the cogs.
Give it a try - you wont regret it :-)
If you like Subnatica and any game with combat, you'll like Volcanoids. Overall though it's a good game not too many complaints good combat, and, base building? Or is it drillship building? Eh who cares, but I do think there should be some changes and some things added, they are;
That is all i can think of right now, though I also have an idea for an achievement, its called minimalist, to get it you would need to beat the game with only one drillship segment. If it is added, please credit some how. That is all though, get the game and spend some time. Have a good rest of your day though.
good game, takes a little bit more brain power but dw it doesn't take that much. One thing though, *WAIT FOR THEM TO FULLY RELEASE THE GAME BEFORE BUYING, NOTHING IS BALANCED AT ALL AND MOST OF THE CURRENT UPDATES BREAK OR MAKE THE ENEMIES FAR TOO STRONG!*. Also new update is a cool idea poorly executed, stuffs too op.
Absolutely incredible game if you like steampunk, my one complaint is that you cant really play after you beat the game.
the idea is cool, interacting with crafting station is nice... but the schematics and building and upgrading... needs to be more explained.
This seriously needs a complete overhaul by a capable UX designer. There's just no way I am suffering through the learning curve of this.
The gameplay trailers look interesting, but that is NOT how the game actually plays at all.
Still early access, but a whole lot of fun, unique too, I did two incomplete runs over the past couple years, then just finished my third run, took 14hrs, with me already knowing the in ands outs. and I will very likely do more runs when big updates come out.
I want to like the game and i had it wishlisted for a long time. I get frustrated with the amount of micromanaging this game involves. You could look at your engine and there is several tiny pieces to click on that all do different things. It would be easier if you could just click on the module as a whole and it gives you everything in a simplified format. The gunfights are slow and kinda choppy. If you are walking to the right while fighting several robots with a gun the bullets do not go straight. You have to aim a bit left to land a shot. It all becomes so tedious that this game feels more like a job than a game. The notifications for new quest is in a super small print and they tend to overlap. This makes it a headache to even figure out what you need to do next.
very great gameplay i enjoyed my playthrough of this. unfortunately the game lowers in quality once you complete the main objective. when the volcano stopped erupting ores stopped forming which over time will make the game unplayable. alongside the lack of ores the lack of enemies makes the game less fun to play once completing the main objective. other than the end game issue the gameplay is still quite enjoyable.
overall score: 7/10
This game was a joy to play through from start to finish. From building and expanding your drill to be the ultimate production and murder machine to hunting around the game word to find trinkets and music collectables, the game was enjoyable throughout.
This game isn't for everyone, but its a lot of fun, especially multiplayer.
If you:
✅ like base builders
✅ like fps games
✅ like a steampunk vibe
you may enjoy this game
game is super fun with lots of new content. honestly a really unique game
Its actually fun when the devs actually listen to peoples comments along with taking into consideration when it comes to ideas. Can be a little confusing when you start so I suggest watching a walk through. Have not played a lot but so far 10/10/
overall a great experiance, 6 years in the making, cant wait to see how it fleshes out!!
Pretty decent game as far as I've played. A little misleading in terms of what you can do, or was to me at least; you can't actually move drillships across the surface, there's no "pitch" control for piloting, etc. Movement is basically just an indicator on a map, with different y levels that you can go between. Also, I wouldn't mind being able to take modules from disabled drillships without having to capture them and/or abandon my own drillship. Last thing; drillship "trains" don't seem to curve while you're driving it as far as I've seen. So they're just always straight. Regardless, those are just minor complaints, the game is still pretty good. I'm just a fairly critical person.
Edit: I finished the game. Overall, neat experience, but... short. It feels like there could have been so much more to the game. Granted, I know there's an update in progress that will hopefully make the game (and island) bigger. And it looks interesting so far. I just hope it comes out fairly soon. Also; I wish I could "steal" modules from enemy drillships. There are a particular few I'm interested in; I know they exist as items; but without capturing the whole drillship, I can't take them. Granted, there's probably reasons for that... spawners and such probably wouldn't behave well if owned by a player. But, it would be cool to be able to have my drillship deploy a tank or something. Even better; if the deployed tank can be ridden and operated manually.
I know a surface transport option is seemingly planned for when the bigger map happens, but... having a slow yet heavily armed and armored vehicle separate from that would be nice. A different thing to fill a different niche I guess. Maybe also have a third "type" of vehicle, which is roughly in between the tank and monowheel thing in terms of speed and firepower, but with a lot of item storage? Just a thought. I like vehicles in games, and this game seems like it could really use some transport options that are quicker than walking or packing/unpacking the drillship.
One last thing; some of the "official"(?) mods for the game have some things that feel like they would be well suited for the base game. Bomb drones, for one. The idea of something that has to take a long time to manufacture, has to be called manually to one's location, but can do a lot of damage at once is nice. House interiors also, though with that it'd be nice to make them feel more like homes than just hollow structures. Maybe some random furniture, more rooms... just some details to make them look as though they were lived in. And, ideally, some loot, but that's besides the point. The auto burrow mod would also be a nice thing for vanilla.
They have screwed the lategame balance so hard with the new patch even Dark Souls is pointing and laughing.
devs are always showing us something good plenty of updates
Nice range of difficulty and the updates tend to add lots of real content.
why does it just keep getting better. these devs don't know how to chill and I am [i]*not*[/u] complaining. excellent PvE title. and that's from someone playing solo.
Fun survival game. great with friends. can't wait for future updates
I've loved this game for almost eight years or more. I finally managed to finish it last year (or maybe this year). It was pretty hard for me, but still such a great experience. Ever since I first saw the game on Scrapman’s channel, I’ve wanted to play it—and I’ve loved it ever since.
This game is pretty interesting and keeps getting updates so I´m excited for what comes next. Now I have been playing this game since it came out so it is just amazing to see how far the Volcanoids has come so far...
PS: Keep It Up Devs
is a game that games like gaming frfr
Made enoug expolsives to destroy half of the map. also you can beat robots to death with a leg
I had severe framerate issues once the enemy/personal drill ship gets to tier 2, and only gets more frequent/worse as I progressed. The game has too many moving parts and no way to shut them off. the recommended spec for this might as well be the bare minimum. I have an i5 6500 and a 4GB 1050 Ti, I am above the minimum and below the recommended. I have all the settings down as low as possibly and fps locked at 30 and yet my fps is dropping to -2 Billion, if the fps counter in game is right. This fps drop only happens when I turn anywhere near a drill ship. It only happens when I turn, and never when I'm moving in a straight line. I assume there is too many moving animations happening at once and turning loads them in fully, or something. I might be wrong, but being able to stop the constant animations from all the models in game might fix my problem.
Either way, I can't progress any further because of the fps drops, dying at crucial moments because of it. The game itself is fun, and I want to play it, but It becomes nearly impossible to engage in combat anywhere near a drill ship. I've tried everything on my end to get it to work right and failed. I'll change my tune if the problem gets resolved, but as of right now I can't in good conscience recommend this game to anyone whose PC specs are below recommended.
Good game.
Developer has great community engagement.
Love how the dev keep adding to and taking fans suggestions
Highly Recommend. Fantastic Devs.
This was a joy to play. It didn't overstay it's welcome, and it packed fun surprises in the form of enemy variety.
This game is super fun. Mark as helpful if you agree
Was painfully dull 2 years ago when I last played, not as painfully dull now, but still dull regardless upon playing it again recently. Just feels like all I'm doing is chores, and I love open world survival crafts, especially early access games (I follow close to 100+ early access games, fun to come back with friends when a game drops a big new content update)
:(
I'll revise the review later if it gets better and stops feeling like I'm just doing chores.
worth a buy, add dababy car, 9/10
Amazing Game, Ive watched it go from concept to today. thank you ifunny for this rare gem.
Volcanoids is difficult to pick up but the tutorial dose a grate job helping you out. I find playing with friends or random people on the internet is realy interesting and fun
Diggy Diggy hole
Volcanoids is a great game; the gameplay is fantastic. You quickly understand what you need to do at the beginning and enjoy upgrading your drill and holding your own against enemies.
The story lasts a solid 15 hours, but unfortunately, when I last played it, there wasn’t much to do afterward. For me personally, that would have been the cherry on top.
I've completed this game once so far, and from what I've seen, this game is phenomenal. It is a creative and well executed idea, and also an original idea (I think. I'm not gonna do any research to find out because I'm too lazy to). I don't think I've encountered a single bug so far either. I would very much recommend this game. 10/10
It's pretty good. The jank is present, but it's so charming. At least to me.
I like it.
Drill go brr
Drill ship go Brrrr.... Once you figure out how the research to craft to research to craft system works, this game turns into full on Robot bullying mayhem. Weapons? A BUNCH! ARMOR? YEP! UPGRADEABLE DRILL SHIP!!!
What im saying is, its really fun. The first play through is for the story, the second is to antagonize idiot robots for funsies.
dose not get the updates it should
SO FUN
Hell Yeah simulator
Peak excitement
good fresh concept on a base building game
Quite a fun game for seemingly so early access, can't wait to see what it evolves into!
Very fun game but it took me and my friend 12ish hours to beat it so keep that in mind. I saw a lot of people saying that the game is too hard but they are probably just dumb, if you use the tools available to you, it really isnt that hard.
This game is PEAK!!!!!!!!!! There are very few problems which are listed below that would make the entire game better if they were added.
1. More segments
2. More players (To make good mods)
3. Make the story longer
4. Make tutorial shorter
Other than those 4 problems, G E T T H E G A M E N O W ! ! ! !
IT's fun and playable so you can finish the game with plenty of mods combat is not balance but fine and
there's promise of a big update so totally recommend plus giant drill ship
